  • Rot is a plant disease caused by various organisms such as fungi and bacteria. While any plant can get attacked, succulents are particularly prone.
But even individual succulents can differ from each other in their resilience to rot.
There are a few reasons succulents can succumb to rot so easily. Their water-saving adaptations are likely to be part of it as well as rot -causing fungi that prefer to attack succulents over other plants.
In this video we'll quickly explain rot, why succulents are so susceptible and which succulents tend to be resilient to rot.

In general, do you find Haworthia species to be less fickle/more hardy than the echeverias? Super interesting vid, thanks much😁

Yes- Haworthia are, imo, really great and i don't have rot issues with any of them. Definitely much less fickle than Echeveria. 🙂
All of the Haworthia cultivars i have grow outdoors permanently- don't have to hide any away when the rains come.
The only issue i have is snails & slugs- they really love Haworthia🙄🐌

How big are those plastic flats the pots are in at 2:53?

I use a few different sizes but they are generally 500x380mm or 570x358mm. They can be bought with or without holes. The pots are 60mm squat pots.

I'm new to growing succulents, but I noticed that I bought a few that were grown in some substance like sponge and is impossible to remove fully from the roots. All of those started decaying after a month and I noticed rotting stems. One I couldn't save at all, others I hope to save, but who knows. Is it possible thay this fiber is more likely to make them rot becuase it retains too much liquid? I thought next time I'll just cut off the roots completely and start new ones not to risk it. Or the rotting is not related to that at all?

Ahh, yes- that's peat moss. I see a lot of big nurseries use it as it's great when you have a good setup (ventilated greenhouse, irrigation etc.) but really useless for the consumer. It can definitely rot succulents as it stays wet for a long time and can waterlog roots, leading to them rotting.
Just like you say- it is better to sacrifice the roots. I sometimes buy stock from these nurseries and just try separate as much as i can, even if it means i'll tear lots of roots off..
