That 30 mins just flew by, excellent run through. I think you are a fish keeper in the purest sense. You make no claim to replicate a natural environment you keep it simple and provide immaculate water and a great diet for the fish you keep. I personally get more enjoyment out of the preparation, researching habitats both flora and fauna and that side of the hobby. Again excellent stuff and it's easy to see why you're the most popular aquarium channel on UA-cam
I thought the video was sooo long! I thought you guys were going to be pissed! lol I had too much to talk about.. should have made it into a few videos. I tried my best to stay on topic.. i could have EASILY made this a 2 hour video. It was originally an hour... but i chopped it down. I'll expand on a lot of the topics in this video eventually.
Excellent. You are truly the King of the DIY Aquariums. It is so wonderful that you have always shared your knowledge with us. You have a way of simplifying this fantastic hobby. Thanks again.
First, your fish in this tank are awesome! Just a suggestion, since the freshwater sting rays produce a lot if ammonia, when they get larger, if you have to adapt the filtration to accommodate for that extra ammonia, in the heating barrel, having a lot of aquatic plants like Amazon Swords, Java Fern, or Anubias will remove a lot of the waste. Amazon Swords need to be in a container. Potting the sword plant will eliminate the need to add a media to the bottom of the barrel. Keep doing what your doing!
I do a little of both. I sell to stores, hobbyists... and even shipped a bunch around. I sold them really cheap($10-25 each) to get discus in more peoples hands so they too can experience them.
Back when I kept a 10 gallon aquarium just for my two black moors, a pleco, and a couple algae eaters, I couldn't even figure out how to keep it from leaking or how to protect the smaller fish. I did have a couple algae eaters, but sadly, one of them went into the filter system I used at the time. It killed him and broke my heart. I really like the way you take care of your fish and how you are able to figure out how to protect them. As far as a background or backdrop, I didn't put the one I had inside the tank. I just used some Scotch tape and taped it outside the aquarium in the back where I could still see it through the aquarium from the front. The tape didn't show in the front and it looked good.
You're one of the best fish keeper here on youtube! :)) Not minding the aesthetic aspect of the tank, in order to provide more for your fishes! Cheers from the Philippines! Keep the hobby alive man!
I have been following your videos for about three years now. I have a lot of respect for you in how you present your videos and have learned a lot by watching them. Your large tank is awsome and you have inspired me to do my own when I have a location I can build one, keep up the good work.
Danny here from the UK! This is an truly awesome video and VERY inspiring, thank you for taking the time in doing it. Just one question....Would you be doing a video showing how your connected the Discus fry tank to the large main tank? I think this would be an interesting video to look at! Keep up the good work mate.
Watched from beginning to end, you couldn't get me off the computer! That was absolutely awesome explanation and run-down of the system. I cringed at the barbs though, stepped on a stingray not too long ago... let me tell you... it hurts and burns all the way from the puncture to the hip.
I heard its PAINFUL! I recently had a friend that got stabbed in the hand from one of his own rays.... just a pup too.. only a few weeks old. He described it as being incredibly painful.
Finally so great to see your personal setup, absolutely amazing. Was about to say you should get a nice big fancy pleco that might help with scrubbing every month but the bioload of a big pleco might be too much combined with those stingrays and arowana (espec. once they get massive) anyway awesome video Joey, beautiful fish and a beautiful (functionally :P) setup!
Yeah but added to the issues with it i mentioned Im pretty new to the hobby so I dont have a clue about water parameters for any of the fish he has in their right now haha, if it doesnt tailor to his Rays i dont think joey will give it a thought :P
Love your videos. Just setting up my first discus tank. Your arowana, stingrays and discus is a beautiful combo. Would love to have that combination someday. :-) Just noticed you've written a book. Will be purchasing soon. Melanie
This was incredible! My question is do you have plans on getting more Asian arows, and if so is a red one part of those plans? Looking forward to many more of these types of updates man!
No, i wont be getting any more. It would have to be one, or several. Too low a number and they just fight. PLUS, way out of my budget for anymore. I have never been a fan of reds to be honest... i LOVE gold scales on an arowana instead. I personally think they make for a nicer fish.
sooo long video but never got bored even a bit while watching and it was so fun to watch your fishes and tanks But just wondering, dont you like to keep flowerhorn in your tank
Great videos thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I have got your book and have to study it. Just a quick question you mention feeding earthworms are these fresh, the reason i ask is i am rebuilding my aquaponic systems and in the past i have fed live fresh food like worms but have wondered sometimes while watching the fish eating should i be cleaning the worms somehow or should i be feeding worms at all? The fish love them though! God Bless!
Fantastic video. I am a huge discus fan and have over 35 of them in a few tanks in my living room. Havent had time to care and get the breeding pairs properly setup so i do hope to learn a few things from you especially into simplifying stuff as the maintenance is killing me. I think your rays and arowana are fantastic and perhaps one day in a house....
As I said Earlier, Have you considered the possibility of plotted plants? IT could interest the fish that aren't sting rays no? Also could work as a background/Decoration to the tank without messing up with the filter too much.
Another awesome vid. The fish room is going to be awesome. Just thinking if those discus get sick that may transmit to the rays ect. And that could be difficult to resolve.though I don't see your discus getting sick. I loved watching them rays feed.
Damn! i missed saying that! Its just polyester filling. (get it at wal-mart for in the crafts section $6 for a massive bag of it)... last me around 1-2 months. Its usually used for filling in quilts or blankets. If you use it, make sure its 100% polyester and no additives(Like anti-mildew)
good video man...are you going to link all your tanks to the one big filter system? if you do you could increase your drip system and never do water changes on all your tanks.....good looking fish love the discus but im an african cichlid fan atm
Great video. Always enjoy watching your videos. There is always so much useful info in the. I do have a question for you tho. On the 33gallon breeder tanks what color are side, back and bottom panels painted and why do you paint them? I have seen several videos and it seems a lot of people paint them that color just not sure why.
Joey I have been watching your channel for about a year and it has helped a lot! But I wanted to know where you get those big air stones you have in your aquarium? Thank you
Hi nice tank, the simplicity really brings a harmonious look to the tank! got a question hehe...I've got a 3D printer at work and I was thinking about creating some deco in plastic for my aquarium but I'm worried that the material might contain some poisoning stuff, what do I need to be aware of in this case? Best wishes from Sweden!
Joey this was great to see. I do agree with you on doing the nice relaxed video and just showing the behind the scene. I have watched all of your videos and it's just nice to see how all your project have come together to make one great functioning system. Also how can some one watch this and say large tanks are just to much work. I think larger tanks are just easier. Well man keep have fun. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.
many many thanks for your precious share. The substrates actually cause trouble to keep water quality same by arresting fish waste all the time. So I create my won 1.25" thick underground filter, and regularly suck out all waste underneath it through 1" garden hose (used as a siphon). I use just one layer of 1" gravel on top of the filter, and get clean water! I also use a simple DIY HOB filter by a air pump!
Your videos inspire a lot. The idea of eliminating manual water change is very good, this way the hobby remains fun filled. The water I get to use has minerals in it. Over periods of time I end up with salt deposits at the water line. This gets aggravated by the fine mist the air stone creates. Any thoughts on how to manage these? Thanks for the wonderful video and the knowledge you share.
I finally got to see the that amazing tank and system of yours, thank to you i made my first fresh water tank then i made a modification and changed it to a salt water tank, i have followed every step and every technique of your to keep my tank and my fish healthy and happy. Saludos from veracruz, mexico
I love the fish and i wish i could afford them. I really love those discus. If you ever want to get rid of some im more then willing to take some off your hands haha. Great video
hey joey how big is your return pipe versus your three output pipes? and does your one return pipe keep up with your three output pipes? thanks love the tank and info on your fish stock and room
You answered so many questions, but I just have one more, how do you remove the fish waist, because it normally floats to the bottom and you have an over flow that takes water from the top of the tank. And I did not know you breed discus, that is cool
Interesting stuff. I'm looking at growing my hobby substantially this year and your videos will help me avoid many mistakes. Thanks, oh and i enjoy this style of your videos the most
Joey in relation to your filter system on this and constant water changes, how do you go with waste on the bottom of the tank? Reason I'm asking is that I'm considering using your idea on the filtration and constant water changes on a big rack system I'm planning to build which will hold multiple discus tanks. The tanks will hold both breeder and grow outs. I'm wondering the system would elevate the need for vacuuming the bottom of the tanks all the time. Thanks, Jason
I love the diy filter/sump build vids best, keep up the good work. One thing, when you came to the uk I wished you had checked out Andy woods cichlids as well as plant guy who you see
Awesome video man - cant wait to see another update in a year or so. Also get an instagram page - lots more ways of sharing your knowledge and getting new fans.
you can use carbon filter. for joey his water system is natural. i dont know how to call it. anyways it is in his video on how to never do water change, drip system. also how to build big aquarium video :)
Sound's like a slow drip method over active charcoal will purify the water enough for fish. Wasn't aware it would remove chlorine though. Watching this made me rethink my future plans for a larger tank. Love those Discus!
Hi Joey, will those ray attack your discus in the period u comm them together? because i also having one 10" female motoro stingray and thinking whether my discus can comm with them or not.
Another great informative/descriptive video joey, thank! I always take what i like and employ it in my big cichlid tanks, well not nearly as big as yours but good sized. Hell if u can keep arows/fw rays/ discus colorful/large/happy/manage a 500g, your pretty good fish keeper in my books lol.
Very interesting channel Joey! Everyone can find anything here . Obviously you know better so tell me please, how many discus can I put in a 40 gallons tank ? Thanks and keep up the good work.
Great video Joey! I hope to one day build a tank like that one day. I really want to get some sort of shark. Lets just say my parents are ok right now with the platy's and mollies lol do you know any good online places were I can buy fish off in Canada. Thanks and love the vid!
Hi Joey i have nearly watched all of your videos and i want to say thank you for the video's they have helped me really get into the hobby i have nearly finished my 4ft 190L Tank i shall upload that soon. With your tanks i was thinking of an idea that's used to make speaker boxes instead of just cutting the edges we cut them at 45's that way there is more surface area to join the sides i was thinking would that help with fish tanks?
Hey Joey, was it hard to get the volume of water drip going so the filling and overflow were just right, and when you incorporate another tank into the system, will the change the amount of water that will have to drip into the main tank ? Love these type of videos, would love to see more, Thanks...
A devastating update on my stingrays ► goo.gl/LGMIIY
2014 to now is like day and night, love the evolution of the channel Joey! God bless Frank for that
Your well ahead of yourself, upgraded the aquarium in 3 years - well done 👍🏻
Damn man I would do anything just to spend one day with you over beers. Amazing individual.
That 30 mins just flew by, excellent run through. I think you are a fish keeper in the purest sense. You make no claim to replicate a natural environment you keep it simple and provide immaculate water and a great diet for the fish you keep. ***** Speaking for myself, I would have been very happy to watch a two hour video!
I love the long videos that arent solely focused on professionalism. Thanks for the update
A little break is nice sometimes.
Excellent. You are truly the King of the DIY Aquariums. It is so wonderful that you have always shared your knowledge with us. You have a way of simplifying this fantastic hobby. Thanks again.
Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! Always appreciated!

Great video. Really cool to see your fish. Do you sell the discus you breed privately? or do you sell them to your local fish stores?
I do a little of both. I sell to stores, hobbyists... and even shipped a bunch around. I sold them really cheap($10-25 each) to get discus in more peoples hands so they too can experience them.

Sound aquarium principles applied simply - hence perfectly. Incredible tank - and fishroom! And a great video! More!!!
Adding 40 discus sounds EPIC!!! Hope to see it the next large tank update
I just found your channel... and I love it!
Thanks Jessie! And welcome!
You're welcome! Your arowana is beautiful- I thought they were illegal though.... XD Beautiful discus.. what type of freshwater stingray are they?
Jessie Chang They are not illegal in Canada. Which is where i am. The rays are Leopoldi.
Oh, thank you so much! :)
Sorry just a question to anyone.. Why are these fish illegal in some places ??? Thanks
That was one of the best fish videos I have seen in a long time. Thanks for taking the time.
No problem tim!
freshwater rays in the wild don't live in sand anyway, they live in smooth muddy river bottoms. a really hard substrate to simulate.
You're one of the best fish keeper here on youtube! :)) Not minding the aesthetic aspect of the tank, in order to provide more for your fishes! Cheers from the Philippines! Keep the hobby alive man!
Very well thought out setup. Nicely done. And of course beautiful fish!
Great to see your setups!!!
No problem!
I have been following your videos for about three years now. I have a lot of respect for you in how you present your videos and have learned a lot by watching them. Your large tank is awsome and you have inspired me to do my own when I have a location I can build one, keep up the good work.
Very clever Joey. Keep it up! Most arowana owners including myself have never introduced substrate and plants too. Glad you can speak my mind :)
Danny here from the UK!
This is an truly awesome video and VERY inspiring, thank you for taking the time in doing it.
Just one question....Would you be doing a video showing how your connected the Discus fry tank to the large main tank? I think this would be an interesting video to look at!

Damn man...freaking awesome! And I like the fact that you use your ideas in your own tanks. You are the man!
Awesome video, good to know that there are intelligent people "upgrading" the hobby, also that arowana is gorgeous.
Love your videos and how much you care about your fish.
Your videos are prolly the best on youtube that involve this hobby. Keep if up!
Finally so great to see your personal setup, absolutely amazing. Was about to say you should get a nice big fancy pleco that might help with scrubbing every month but the bioload of a big pleco might be too much combined with those stingrays and arowana (espec. once they get massive) anyway awesome video Joey, beautiful fish and a beautiful (functionally :P) setup!

what air pump do you use in your big tank
This was incredible! My question is do you have plans on getting more Asian arows, and if so is a red one part of those plans? Looking forward to many more of these types of updates man!

sooo long video but never got bored even a bit while watching and it was so fun to watch your fishes and tanks
But just wondering, dont you like to keep flowerhorn in your tank
This is AMAZING! Watched every minute, totally great video!
Nice video dude. Been watching your videos since the day of the 3ft glass sump days, best one yet.
Which one was that? Must have been a while ago! PS: Thanks for the long time support!! We have come a LONG way!
Absolutely awesome man! Very impressive!! How would you make the filter equally effective but quieter if it was near a living area?
This is the video that made me fell in love with your channel joey
Great videos thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I have got your book and have to study it. Just a quick question you mention feeding earthworms are these fresh, the reason i ask is i am rebuilding my aquaponic systems and in the past i have fed live fresh food like worms but have wondered sometimes while watching the fish eating should i be cleaning the worms somehow or should i be feeding worms at all? The fish love them though! God Bless!
Really enjoyed this video Joey. Love watching your DIY videos but it was even better to get an update! So, when are you starting with koi? ;-D
In the summer. ;)
Hi Joey, thanks for the idea of setting up a big tank. Are you breeding discus for full time business?
Fantastic video. I am a huge discus fan and have over 35 of them in a few tanks in my living room. Havent had time to care and get the breeding pairs properly setup so i do hope to learn a few things from you especially into simplifying stuff as the maintenance is killing me.
I think your rays and arowana are fantastic and perhaps one day in a house....
I have to say you are getting much more comfortable in front of the camera. Love the setup. Keep it up!
I better be after 100+ videos!
you did it again joey this is one of the best videos ive seen about fishes/ fish tank updates god bless and keep doing you
Thanks Mario!
Nice arowana and discus! So cool...
As I said Earlier, Have you considered the possibility of plotted plants? IT could interest the fish that aren't sting rays no? Also could work as a background/Decoration to the tank without messing up with the filter too much.
Your tanks are great man, waiting till I move out to learn your tips and use them . keep up the good work. Ohh also nice fish
Another awesome vid. The fish room is going to be awesome. Just thinking if those discus get sick that may transmit to the rays ect. And that could be difficult to resolve.though I don't see your discus getting sick. I loved watching them rays feed.
Great vid joey. Been waiting a long time for this. Living the dream. What do u use for the prefilter?
Damn! i missed saying that! Its just polyester filling. (get it at wal-mart for in the crafts section $6 for a massive bag of it)... last me around 1-2 months. Its usually used for filling in quilts or blankets. If you use it, make sure its 100% polyester and no additives(Like anti-mildew)
Cheers for the tip!
Very cool video!
Thank you for posting it.
I have been thinking about getting my first freshwater stingray soon.
good video man...are you going to link all your tanks to the one big filter system? if you do you could increase your drip system and never do water changes on all your tanks.....good looking fish love the discus but im an african cichlid fan atm
Hey Joey, do you not like your aquariums to be completely full? I was just wondering. I always top mine off.
Great video. Always enjoy watching your videos. There is always so much useful info in the. I do have a question for you tho. On the 33gallon breeder tanks what color are side, back and bottom panels painted and why do you paint them? I have seen several videos and it seems a lot of people paint them that color just not sure why.
Great video, definetly inspires me to have run my aquarium by simplicity and consistency.
Hey Joey, nice videos. How big are your tanks for breeding dicsus?
Joey I have been watching your channel for about a year and it has helped a lot! But I wanted to know where you get those big air stones you have in your aquarium?
Thank you
Hi nice tank, the simplicity really brings a harmonious look to the tank!
got a question hehe...I've got a 3D printer at work and I was thinking about creating some deco in plastic for my aquarium but I'm worried that the material might contain some poisoning stuff, what do I need to be aware of in this case?
Best wishes from Sweden!
Love seeing more of the side of your hobby. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and look forward to every new video!
May not be fancy, but none the less impressive! Great job Joey! :)
Thanks Amber!
Love the longer style vid.Keep it up!
This may be a stretch, but have you ever thought of doing a planted tank? I would love to learn what you would learn if you kept one!
Can't wait to see what you come up with next.
nice tank, nice filtration, awesome community.
Also that tank rack looks pretty cool but will it hold that amount of water ?
many many thanks for your precious share.
Growing up in the Philippines, that Arowana looks beautiful. Love your videos!
I enjoyed the Vid..I would of never thought you only owned 3 species of fish now. I'm guessing this is your only community tank?
Great video Joey! Really great system! Gotta ask, are you planning on selling any of those discus that you are breeding in the future?
I was selling up until the move of the big tank. I MIGHT start selling again yes.
I finally got to see the that amazing tank and system of yours, thank to you i made my first fresh water tank then i made a modification and changed it to a salt water tank, i have followed every step and every technique of your to keep my tank and my fish healthy and happy. Saludos from veracruz, mexico
Felt like every your movie says the same. But good that u talked about everything in single movie. :-) Wondering what's going to be next :D
Glad you enjoyed this one!
OMG!! that tank is looking good bro
Just awesome Joey, love to have some of those discus someday...
I love the fish and i wish i could afford them. I really love those discus. If you ever want to get rid of some im more then willing to take some off your hands haha. Great video
This is probably my favorite video so far. Only problem is my wife is liking the discus and I don't have the space to expand.
Maybe clear out a tank for them? You'll love discus ray.
This is a very good lookn set up love what you have done with the tank good stuff keep the vids comming
hey joey how big is your return pipe versus your three output pipes? and does your one return pipe keep up with your three output pipes? thanks love the tank and info on your fish stock and room
You answered so many questions, but I just have one more, how do you remove the fish waist, because it normally floats to the bottom and you have an over flow that takes water from the top of the tank. And I did not know you breed discus, that is cool
So, did you get rid of your saltwater aquarium too?
Amazing setup!
Interesting stuff. I'm looking at growing my hobby substantially this year and your videos will help me avoid many mistakes. Thanks, oh and i enjoy this style of your videos the most
Awesome! Thats one of the main reasons i do what i do!
Great videos! Thanks for sharing!
Also how do you regulate the temperature in the tank?
Joey in relation to your filter system on this and constant water changes, how do you go with waste on the bottom of the tank? Reason I'm asking is that I'm considering using your idea on the filtration and constant water changes on a big rack system I'm planning to build which will hold multiple discus tanks. The tanks will hold both breeder and grow outs. I'm wondering the system would elevate the need for vacuuming the bottom of the tanks all the time. Thanks, Jason
I love the diy filter/sump build vids best, keep up the good work. One thing, when you came to the uk I wished you had checked out Andy woods cichlids as well as plant guy who you see
Real good video Joey. Your fish are really nice and that arowana is gorgeous. Very interesting video and thanks for sharing :)
Thank you very much! i'll let the fish know! ;)
Awesome video man - cant wait to see another update in a year or so. Also get an instagram page - lots more ways of sharing your knowledge and getting new fans.
how many litres of k1 are you using to treat the water ?
Quick question what type of air stones are you using?? and pump?
Could you do a video of arowana care and tips? I was also wondering how fast do they grow?
Great video, and very informative as always. How do you go about treating your tap water with the drip system?
you can use carbon filter. for joey his water system is natural. i dont know how to call it. anyways it is in his video on how to never do water change, drip system. also how to build big aquarium video :)
Which type of tank (glass or acrylic) do you prefer? I don't recall seeing any acrylic tanks in this video.Ted

Love these type of videos, would love to see more,
Thanks...
I'll have to explain this in a video. ;)
WOW. The back of our big tank is even bigger. Massive collection of tanks and 100 discus.
i love the updates please keep them comming
Great set up and amazing fish!! :)
Thank you!
I want to see you do a planted tank! But here's the kicker, do it using an aquaponic system.
Awesome tank. I wish my room was big enough to build one like that
Love it! I need a drip system for my discus!
You'll love it. I have a video on it, take a look. "how to: never do water changes"
