Congratulations on purchasing your new JBL Bar 9.1. We’ll walk you through a few quick steps to help you get started. We’ll also provide a few tips and tricks most users will not know about, so with our guide, you’ll get the most out of your new Dolby Atmos soundbar system. The first step you’ll want to take is decide how you want to position your soundbar. The Bar 9.1 is designed to sit under your TV and it can also be wall-mounted. Wall-mounting brackets and instructions are included in the box. If you place the soundbar under your TV, we recommend separating the bar from the TV to give the upward-firing drivers enough clearance to direct sound up to your ceiling. There’s also rear-speakers that detach from the Bar 9.1, you can place them anywhere in your room for an immersive experience. JBL marks which rear-surround speaker is the left or right channel on the sides of each unit, so you’ll want to pay attention to that as that will affect the sound. When you detach the rear-speakers, it’s generally a good practice to place them on top of tables or even a pair of stands behind you. They’ll give you about 10 hours of wireless playtime, and when it’s time to charge, a red light will blink on top of each unit to let you know it's time to recharge.
If you’re just getting started with Dolby Atmos, usually, a quick google search is the best way to see a list of all the great Dolby Atmos content available. However, we have a fun Pro tip: you can see all the movies and TV shows encoded with this new surround format on Netflix and Amazon Prime just by typing the words “Dolby Atmos” into the platform’s search field. If you have Disney+, you'll have to search google for a comprehensive list of Dolby Atmos content, but we’re really impressed by the large collection of Dolby Atmos content available on Disney+, so be sure to check that out for the most movies encoded with Dolby Atmos.
After you plug in the power supply and make the necessary connections with your TV, the soundbar will automatically display helpful instructions right from the LED screen on the front of the bar. Next is the calibration process. Your Bar 9.1 will capture the unique properties of your room and then tune its output based on the acoustic readings it gathers - and it does all of this in just two simple steps. First, you’ll want to start the calibration process by placing the two detachable wireless rear-speakers behind you. Using the remote control that JBL includes in the box, hold down the button labeled “HDMI” for 3 seconds. The LED display on the front panel of the bar will count down the seconds for you. After this, the Bar 9.1 will output a few test tones directly from the soundbar and the rears. The internal microphones built inside the Bar 9.1 will automatically capture the acoustic properties of your living-space in less than a few minutes.
This concludes our tips and tricks for the JBL Bar 9.1. This should get you up and running so you can start enjoying all the great movies in this exciting Dolby Atmos format. If you’re looking for more audio equipment or if you have any questions that were not in our video feel free to chat with us on audioadvice.com, call us or if you’re in the area, come into any of our Raleigh or Charlotte NC locations. Why do you say that you should point the surround speakers with the connector facing away from you? The mounts for the surround to attach them to your wall put the connector to the side, so I would think that they are intended to be placed in that direction correct?
Have a problem trying to change battery in flicker
Or does it have battery
Hi Greg. The internal batteries in the wireless detachable rear speakers have a battery indicator light that flashes to let you know when the battery is depleted and needs recharging. They charge when they are magnetically connected to the charging ports on the sides of Bar 9.1 soundbar. There is also a power input on each rear speaker that will let you connect them to a wall outlet for power and charging as well. We may need more information about your setup at home to better understand how to troubleshoot further if this information does not resolve your issue. If you purchased your JBL 9.1 from us, please reach out to us in chat at audioadvice.io/aa-chat so we can help you troubleshoot the issue you are experiencing. Thank you so much for watching.
Hi when im playing shooting video games when i shoot the gun therebis delay on the sound... how can i fix this..
The jbl 9.1 is connected to arc hdmi and that hdmi format is set to bitstream... i have the option to change it to pcm... what would you recommend. And how can i fix the delay sound
You could try that or try connecting your game console directly to the soundbar. Thanks for watching
Am I better off connecting to my TV via the optical cable or HDMI?
eARC HDMI is best. If your TV has that
Thanks for the tips… just wanted to understand if I wish to permanently detach the surround speakers, would it be advisable to keep them in charge via USB at all times? Would this affect the overall battery life, performance, etc of the surround speakers considering it’ll always be on charging mode separated from the main bar?
What I do is connect both speakers to a dual USB brick that outputs at least 1A each. I believe mine is 2A each at this time. Attach the charging brick to a smart plug like wemo. Set a schedule as you please. I have it charging daily right after work for 1 or 2 hours when I will be most likely watching tv. By doing this you could just turn on your tv and your rears will auto connect without any input from you whatsoever.
I would setup the assistant with your smart plug too so that you could turn the charging on and off with your voice. I have a customized voice routine using Google or Nest products that will turn on the speakers and then it off right after if I ever want to just connect the rear speakers without the need of charging them. You could really do a lot like see a timer to always turn off your speakers after an hour of charging or so. You could even have it turn off at certain time at night so they it doesn't just charge overnight without you knowing.
Good luck!
I have mine connected to usb chargers and they have been running like this for months w ok th no issues. When the bar needs to be updated, you have to plug the speakers back into the sides of the main bar though.

I am considering this speaker system, but am wondering if I can place the rear speakers behind me on each side, but higher up near the ceiling without compromising the experience
Most speakers like this that fire upward into the ceiling for the Atmos effects want the ceiling to be 8-12 ft tall and have the speaker about 3' off the floor. But you should try it, but be sure to do the calibration process.

My philips TV has 4 audio output options that are: Multichannel, Dolby Digital Plus, Stereo (uncompressed) and Multichannel (Bypass).
What of those 4 settings should I choose to get most out of the JBL soundbar?

Thanks for your question! Sounds like "Multichannel" might be the best option if you're wanting to experience multichannel Dolby Atmos content. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@AudioAdvice Isn't it the Multichannel (Bypass) which will bypass the original audio format like Atmos? I guess, the Multichannel option will output an LPCM signal. I also have a Philips TV with same options.

They only list the current soundbars as being supported and we do not have one of these to test, but you could certainly try downloading the free app to see if it will connect.
Why no instructions of what to do when it says setup wifi?? Nothing happens for me, doesnt show up in google home
You have to use the Google Home app.

It will depend some on your room layout. Either beside or behind you. Feel free to experiment to see which gives you more surround immersion. Thanks for watching
I can’t get my sound bar to say Dolby Atmos. When I play Atmos movies sound bar says Dolby surround sound. I’m using LG OLED CX 77 inch. I’m using Apple Netflix Disney and Prime apps that’s on the tv. I had to change HDMI cord because one came with system was too short.
I have a LG c9 Oled. I had the same problem. you have to use "passthrough" to get the Dolby Atmos feature. Go to your sound menu and look for the HDMI connection. You should see passthrough . Just highlight it and you will be good to go.

Left..... Right. Is the left right taken from the left of the sound bar looking into the room, or left from the room looking at the soundbar??
As you sit in your chair facing the system the left channel is on your left
I felt I was in a JBL commercial at times, during this clip. Only towards the end did it give really useful information like calibration and speaker placement, and I'm grateful for that. I suggest the presenter watch this, because he was shifting his hips from side to side, as if nervous - he spoke clearly and concisely so it wasn't that. Probably just a habit he was unaware of.

Mine is not calibrating, always says failed to calibrate
Great product, I love this soundbar. A few things I will add after having one for a few months :
1. The subwoofer has settings for 1-5 with 5 being absurd amounts of bass. Hip hop music will shake your whole house.
2. Don't stand in the way of the speakers during calibration, or it may take several tries to calibrate.
3. The display panel will tell you which codec you are using when you first start a media file. This will ensure you are getting atmos or dts true hd.
4. It doesn't seem that the detachable speakers charge during output when their battery is low. IE if you continue using the bar with the speakers docked they either don't charge or charge much slower than the typical 3 hour chargetime.
The only thing I don't like is the remote isn't backlit and the level adjustment buttons do not have a wake-up function. IE each time you press them they adjust the level, there isn't a first press to tell you which level you are on. Minor gripe, could get fixed in firmware.
Also my bar didn't come with mounting brackets or the magnet covers that are included in non US regions which I found strange but not a big deal.
I heard problems with wireless speakers and it doesn't last battery
You shall had the wall mount brackets in your kit. The covers yep they are not included.
@@ahambhramasmii the only issue i have had with the wireless is occasionally they don't power on when you turn the tv or sound bar on (when setup in surround in your room)
All you have to do is press the small power button on the wireless speaker when that happens. Charge wise i haven't timed them but right around 10 hours of playback seems to be what i am getting. Probably varies a bit based on volume level.
@@iareburgman is the soundbar worth it against sony?
I can't get this bar as much as I would like to. You cannot use the system whenever you want and that's just silly, all they have to do is give you the option of playing while charging and it would save a lot of hassle.

My skyworth google tv. No HDMI ARC. ONLY HDMI. Can you please help met how to connect my JBL 9.1 to my skyworth google tv
We aren't familiar with that TV, sorry.
I did this calibration hoping it would fix my issue but it hasn't. I don't understand the purpose of the detachable speakers when they don't even emit that much sound. I thought they would have more of a surround sound effect when placed in the back of my room. I even placed them directly close on the left and right side of my ears and they still seem very low. It seems most of the sound is coming from the actual soundbar itself and the detachable speakers sound better connected to the bar. When i demo'd this system at best buy they had the speakers spread apart and as a whole it sounded way better in the store than in my apartment. Am i missing something here? I mean it is very loud as a whole but the detachable speakers seem pointless to be placed anywhere else but connected to the bar
Interesting. The detachable speakers will definitely not be as loud as the bar but they shouldn't be that quiet. We'd recommend contacting whoever you purchased them from to see if you are able to still exchange it for a different one.
Just found a trick: when calibrating place rear speakers closer to the bar (in front of you) at phase I, then at phase II of calibration place them further (behind your position). This way the rear speakers will sound louder
@@dinutepes Sounds good, i'll give that a try. Now i have a new issue. For some reason the sound bar has been extremely louder even on low volume. I never changed any settings. Some things i watch, the dialogue is lower like dialogue is 30% and sound is 70%. I can't turn the volume up louder because it would be crazy loud and my neighbors would complain. It was never like this before, it just randomly started doing this one day. Ever heard of this issue?
This video is so helpful, we recently booked the JBL 9.1 (yet to be delivered) and we are planning to use brackets to mount the rear detachable speakers. The only confusion we had was regarding the sub-woofer, we stay in an apartment on the ground floor and we have floor tiles and not wood finishing floor. Do we need to use a subwoofer stand or keep maybe a memory foam pillow or a small carpet below the subwoofer or can the subwoofer just be kept directly on the floor. What do you recommend?
You should be fine directly on the tile. Glad the video was helpful
@@AudioAdvice Thank you for the quick response and your help, will try it what you suggested :)
The sub has rubber type feet, you should be fine.

@@dimitrigoossens9082 I have a Samsung QLED (Q7F), but it is from 2016. It can set it only for Dolby Digital +. I tried to watch some movies with Atmos (HBO MAX), but my sound bar is reading it as "Surround DD+"
@@peamerico Do you use a device that can handle atmos, for example play via a Nvidia Shield 2019?
I connect my shield to my soundbar IN (passthrough setting in shield), and from JBL (OUT) to TV
I just got the JBL 9.1 in the mail on Tuesday. This thing is worth every penny. It's alot more then I expected! My ps4 keeps powering on though. Not sure how to fix this problem. Having to unplug the ps4 HDMI because it keeps powering on. Not really sure how to fix this yet.
You might try making sure CED HDMI control is set to off in both units. Thanks for watching!
@@AudioAdvice thanks for the advise I'll check it out
I'm looking at an LG C1 77 inch and one of these but the spouse wants the TV mounted. Right now, the TV is in a corner, angled into the room, so the wall mount has to adjust to also rotate into the room while in use. Sonos (via Sanos) has a soundbar mount for a tv wall mount, but that seems to be the exception. I'm concerned "universal" soundbar TV mounts won't adjust well so that the upward firing speakers clear the TV adequately. Any recommendations on a TV wall mount for this soundbar?
Great question, some of the better TV mounts have sound bar extension mounts that allow you to adjust the distance between the bar and the TV. We feel you want at least 4" or more.
Have to unplug and replug it back in because it loses connection with my Sony TV using HDMI
men how i can activate the auto standby . men mine didnt go to standby mode if no detect audio from hours if like some times i use it snd the bar after i shutoff the tv the bar still power on. yes i desacrivate the HDMI CEC so. right now mines have like 1 day entirely power on men

If you use the soundbar without calibration it’s a game changer and sounds much better! Much louder and punchier bass! I might even say that on Standard Mode the Audio becomes more detailed and the Subwoofer a tad Punchier too!
How do you, uncalibrate

How to connect a Karoke system on to this
From left to right, the connections on the back of the bar are - a power connection, a USB Type-A port - this port will let you connect a USB storage device like a thumb drive, or a hard drive, which is pretty cool so you can play your collection of MP3’s from an external drive, an optical Toslink input, an ethernet port, one HDMI eARC output, and one HDMI input. So, there is not a direct way to use this as a karaoke machine without some other adapters in the works. A better option for karaoke that is designed specifically for live performance applications would be JBL's line of PartyBox portable Bluetooth speakers. We have a comparison that compares the PartyBox 310 with PartyBox 1000 (JBL's best PartyBox models) right here: www.audioadvice.com/videos-reviews/best-jbl-bluetooth-speakers/ Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
How playing films 4k with sounds DTS, DTS-X or Atmos, through this sound bar if TV don't supports this sound formats? Or TV can do this through hdmi 2.1 simple recieve to soundbar without TV decoder?
This is a great question. Everyone's setup is unique, come have a chat with one of our soundbar chat experts so that we can get the full understanding about your setup. audioadvice.io/aa-chat
My biggest issue is there's no LED light on the bar to show if it's on or off, just a small light on the top of the Bar would be good, somewhere where it's not distracting.
You didn't say when tuning the soundbar weather it was hooked up to a TV! Don't you need an audio signal! I'm having issues getting sound at all. I am using a VAVA projector and have the HDMI Arc hooked up. Still no sound.
Yes, you would always need it connected to something to provide audio. You should try connecting your JBL to a TV with ARC out (if you have one) to see if it has the same problem, it is likely a setting in the VAVA, but we are not a dealer for that brand and know nothing about it. We assume you have sources connected to the VAVA?
