- In this video, I show you how to paint trees and lighting effects using oil paints. This painting features willow trees growing in a New Zealand mountain valley where the evening sun is bathing the foliage in light and shining through the leaves of the tree canopies.
In the video I will explain the following:
1. Composition
2. Colours and brushes
3. Blocking in the painting
4. Adding detail
5. Adding final details
If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy/use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

I love the way you give such detailed instructions while youre painting. Appreciate your generosity in sharing.
My pleasure 😊
This is Superb, thank you Sam 🙏🇨🇦
My pleasure, thanks for watching 😀
Before watching your videos, I use to think, I will always be horrible with trees and various shades of green, which can be a nightmare for a (novice) landscape artist, and I did watch hundred other videos or so. But thank you, now I can be confident in painting a tree that will look like a tree : )
Learning a lot. Thank you for your generosity.
My pleasure 😊
Greenery is probably the hardest element in landscapes but sticking to one set of colours right from the start as you do makes it a lot easier
Thanks ....a pleasure to watch .
Thanks for watching 😊
At last, another artist who loves Edgar Payne! Great work Sam!
Thanks Shane, Edgar Payne is one of my favourite artists 😊
awesome work sam, helped me so much.

This was SO helpful. I have a very hard time with greens. I appreciate your sharing the combination of colors you use. Thank you!
Thanks 😀
Smashing result! Love it.
Thank you 😊
I tried to follow this but ended up with paint all over my hands, raised blood pressure and a painting an infant would be ashamed to show to its mother. Thank you for helping me discover something else I'm no good at.🙂
Hi Meg, oh no! Sorry you didn't have fun painting this. Just keep trying, the way to get better at painting is brush mileage. Just keep painting 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist Thanks, love your paintings and hope my comment raised a chuckle!
Excellent video, thank you! It's so helpful that you are repeating (saying) the colors that you use as you paint. Makes it easier to remember. Beautiful painting too!!

What a beautiful painting and wonderful explaining.
Thank you Sir.
Thanks Mary Jane 😊
What camera and equipment would you recommend for photographing my work and pictures i’d like to paint?
Mary Jane I have a Canon 650d which I bought years ago. Using a DSLR camera is always good but to be honest I use my iPhone most of the time 😊
Samuel Earp Artist I don't like iPhone photographs for art lol. I feel like they lack realism a tad bit. I am a beginner, teaching myself one day at a time. Your videos have been very helpful. I came across your website when I googled how to create lgh in my painting. Such good content 👍
I mainly use my iPhone for convenience but I agree the photos aren’t the best. That awesome you found my website through a google search. Did you find the blog on my website, I’d be curious to know 😊
I love your tutorial thankyou so much, I was so pleased when you did a tutorial on shadows and greens. Look forward to more.

Thank you so much 😊
Your videos get better and better. Love your work and the fact that you're also a fan of Edgar Payne. As soon as you mentioned the steelyard composition, I knew you must have his outdoor painting book. Can't wait to see more from you!
Thanks Janett, I’ve been teaching myself video making as I go along! I love Edgar Payne’s art works, he is one of my favourite artists. I read his book Composition of Outdoor Painting, I refer to it often and apply the principles to my own paintings. The steelyard composition is one I apply often in my plein air paintings.
Beautiful composition. Excited to see more
Thanks 😊
Thanks, you make fantastic videos (and paintings😂👍🏻).
Thanks 😊
Superb❤
Thanks 🤗
Thank you so much for this one Samuel. I've been struggling with a painting that has a lot of green and how to give it interest and variety, you've certainly helped me!
Thanks Carolina, yeah greens can be tricky colours but I think once you learn how to desaturate them to make them recede in a painting that’s half the battle won.
I usually paint watercolor and some acrylics. I made the error of buying water-based oils to give it a go. I has a sticky consistency and just assumed it was not a medium for me. But found later that the water based are in fact gummy. I have had no intention of working with oils (the mess with cleanup & smell of turpentine), however you have such an easy commentary to your paintings that I just might give it a go! Thanks Sam!!!
Hey Nora, you should definitely give it a go, I think oils are actually the easiest to paint with. You can by odourless solvents and mediums so you don’t have to put up with smells. I love oils as it’s a traditional medium, the colours are rich and vibrant and they are very versatile. Thanks for watching 😊
THE BEST
Thank you , love it.
Thanks 😊
superbe!!merci beaucoup!!
Thanks Martin 🙂
Hey Sam! So glad to see you again!! Wonderful video!! It's amazing how different our willows are. Here in Alabama they have long thin branches that grow from the top all the way down to the ground. (well the weeping willows that is) I'm not certain that we have upright willows.. Lol I'll have to research it. They are all beautiful though!! You always explain so well in your videos, I hope you make some more soon!! I prefer Instagram to the other social media too.. Less drama.. Lol Beautiful work my friend!! 🎨👏🏽😄
Thanks Cristy, yeah we having weeping willows here to, but the willows in my video are crack willows, very common in the South Island however they have all been introduced and are not native to New Zealand. I’ve had to stop looking at Facebook as I can’t stand the drama but I still keep my art page active. I much prefer Instagram because as you say, less drama 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist they are beautiful! Have u ever seen weeping elm trees? Really cool looking.. I love all of the weeping trees. Isn't it weird how two social media sites can be so different? I know there's drama everywhere but it seems like more laid back people are using Instagram. Hope you are having a great day!!
Another truly excellent post, thank you Sam! Your video editing has become excellent as well. As an arborist by trade your ability to paint realistic, distinguishable tree species is inspiring and I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to share this with your viewers. In the past I became frustrated and planned on giving up painting until I found your channel, your calm demeanor and wonderful ability to teach gives me confidence to continue onwards.
Thanks Rusty, glad you enjoyed the video, sorry it took a while to get this one made. I also have more videos to be edited so stay tuned 😊
Hi Rusty, I re-read your comment, are you an arborist?
@@SamuelEarpArtist Hi Sam, I am a Hematologist here in Vermont, my apologies for the confusion. In your previous video on painting foliage you briefly mentioned you are an arborist by trade which really gives your artwork a unique and realistic quality. Cheers!
good job.

OMG! How exciting! Girl or boy? Congratulations! Life for you is going to be so different now, one of the best experiences of living!
Thanks, we had a boy and we’ve named him Theodore after the 19th century artist Edward Theodore Compton. Life has definitely changed but for the better, we love having him in our lives 😊
Really happy for you, and look forward to more videos, in all your spare time, which will be harder to find now! 😏💖
Ha ha, yeah that’s true. Rest assured I’ll be continuing to make painting videos and I’ll get them out when I can even if they do take a bit of extra time.
Thanks sam it’s a great help
Thanks 😊
I will be painting this one today, and the Nora Head landscape, soon, could you put up a video of how you mix the colours? Sam Thank you so much. have a awesome day
Hi Julie, all good. I am in the process of making in-depth real time painting videos which will be for sale from my website. In these videos I will explain everything including how to mix the colours...I will show you how to actually mix them on my palette 🎨 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist Oh ! that's interesting, but disappointing as well because I probably won"t be able to purchase it. Will just try to follow along with the longer versions, and see how that goes. How much will it cost to? have you decided yet?
Hey, all good. I love painting and I love helping people with their art. I want to be able to make a full time living from my art too, if I am working for someone else that is much less time I have for making UA-cam videos, especially as I am also a dad so my time is extremely limited, hence why I haven’t uploaded as many videos as I’d like to on this channel. The painting and video editing takes a very long time, I hope you understand. I’ll be selling videos for as cheap as I can, probably $30 USD for a two to three hour painting video 😊
Brilliantly explained. Your commentary is clear and informative. I really enjoyed your video. Just one question. You used Liquin at the beginning. Did you use it or another medium for the rest of the painting? Your paints seem to flow easily. Many thanks for sharing your technique.
Thanks Charles, yes I used Liquin throughout the painting. Sorry I should be more clear on that in my videos.
You are such an inspiration to me. I love your style. Question - is there a substitute for Yellow Oxide?
Thank you Janet. In answer to your question, the answer is yes, you can use yellow ochre instead 😊
As always super !
Can you do a water colour ?
Thanks. I only use watercolour for botanical paintings, something I want to get back in to 😊
Excellent bro.👏👌
Thanks Laxmi 😊
Sam, no wonder this one wasn't showing up.. I had already watched this one my friend!! 🤣🤣 I even commented below.. Lol I'm an airhead at times.. 😅😂 It is a great tutorial!! Very helpful, I plan on painting en plein air soon now because it's a lot cooler weather here and definitely needed this one!! Thank you Sam!! 🎨💙😁
Thanks Cristy, yes get outside and paint 😊
Samuel sana teşekkür ederim bana 60 ondan sonra resim öğrettiğini için seni Allah korusun
Q&A for ya Sam:
1) Do you mix all you colours before starting or do you mix and adjust as you go?
2) Are you mixing wet in wet or letting each section dry first?
Thanks. I mix all my colours as I go along and I’m always adjusting the mixture.
With regards to studio paintings I let each layer dry first but my plein air paintings (outdoors paintings) are wet on wet.
I really enjoyed this video. I'm glad your back. I'm going to New Zealand in February. Do you have a Gallery?
Hi Lorraine, that’s awesome, New Zealand is a beautiful country. I am based in Queenstown and I have a studio at the Queenstown Arts Centre so you can come and visit me there. I mainly display my art works on my website at www.samuelearp.com
Hi. Just a beginner, but doing it for years..I now have a painting with a lot of greenery over a small building. So hard!
You can do it, keep painting 😀
landscapes are a challenge for me and it's exactly as you said....it's the green that gives me a hard time. I noticed you mix your greens. Do you find that mixing them gives you a more organic and natural color than starting with premixed colors like sap green or hooker green??
Yes, absolutely. The only pre mixed green I use is phthalo green which I use as a kicker to increase the saturation of my green, but you can also make something similar to phthalo green with just cadmium yellow and ultramarine blue. It’s always a good idea to ‘earth’ your greens by adding in a colour that contains red, its opposite on the colour wheel.
In general you may find colour mixing easier if you use less colours. It will make the colours in your painting more cohesive and harmonious because you are using the same colours throughout your painting. These days I’m using a limited palette and of the additional colours I have I can make something similar anyway out of three primaries. Honestly, you don’t need many colours. As with anything in life if you keep it simple it flows and works much better and it’s the same with painting in my opinion.
Thanks so much! I've been painting about 2 years and one of the first things I learned was that keeping to a limited palette makes everything work together. I'm in the middle of a landscape at the moment and using hooker green for the shadows. I think I'll try mixing some greens for the mid-tones and highlights. Love your work!!
I have painted portraits. You have encouraged me to get outside and paint landscapes. So far it ain’t easy! More difficult than it looks.
I suggest you move to California. Your landscapes are what people buy.
Yeah painting outdoors is challenging but it’s great fun and it quickly improves your painting skills. I’d love to come and painting in California 😊
Is there any alternative for yellow oxide ? Because I could not that colour here in Islamabad.
Hi Salvat, yes you can use yellow ochre as they a very similar. Yellow oxide is probably a tiny bit more saturated than yellow ochre but you can honestly use either colour.
아주좋아요 그리고 김뿜조 입니다
Sam do you wash your brush every time when you change your color ? Cause have a huge issue changing colors without washing my brushes cause its time consuming process.
Hello, no I will use many brushes during each painting session as I don’t want the residue from a freshly washed brush to mix in with the paint as it could dirty it. There is a way you can wash multiple brushes as once and it works best with flat brushes. Get an old baked bean tin, fill it a third full with turps, the get a few of you brushes facing vertically downwards with the bristles just touching the bottom of the can. Place your hands together as if you’re saying a prayer with the brushes in between your hands and move them in a rubbing motion as if you’re warming your hands up. The brushes should spin and the bristles just touching the bottom. Do this for about 10 seconds then wipe them, if there is still paint in the bristles, wash them again. After you have done this rinse the brushes in the same way with fresh turps or kerosene (if you can stand the smell). It’s always a good idea afterwards to wash you brushes every few uses with brush soap to maintain your brushes. I hope this helps 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist thanks but should I wash my brushes during painting or just wipe them.
Hello, yes I see what you mean, I would just wipe then with a paper towel and make sure you get as much paint out of the ferrule as possible. I would also have about ten to twenty brushes ready so you can mix lots of colours with muddying them. I have many of the same brushes and I often use between ten to twenty brushes during each painting session. Obviously make sure you clean them thoroughly when you have finished painting.
Thank you so much.very helpful
What kind of brushes you use, the name of the brushes, Thank you in advance.
Hello, I use Rosemary and Co Brushes, they are a British company but they ship worldwide. I have them sent to me here in New Zealand. I mostly use the bristle flat brushes. Here is the link to their website: www.rosemaryandco.com/
@@SamuelEarpArtist Thank you very much!! 😉
@@SamuelEarpArtist Brother, please tell me why I can see the trail of brushes in the picture, do you have more smoothly what is the secret?
At 14:54 you say "As I model the paint on this tree..." Can you explain what you mean by "model"? I have heard Andrew T also use this word in a similar fashion, and would like to understand your meaning better. Thank you Sam.
Yes it doesn’t seem to be a common word in the painting process but it’s a great word. I also heard it from Andrew Tischler and from Edgar Payne in his book ‘Composition of Outdoor Painting’. It means to work areas by building up detail and form of the various zones of your painting. It’s basically adding details.
Hi again Sam, could you upload this video in real time please, thanks in advance

My biggest problem with greens is painting too much greens with little contrast. Most of my landscapes have a little surprise in them. A hidden deer peeking out or a bird nest with Mom feeding her chicks. Not really part of the balance of the painting but it makes people search my paintings and maybe buy them.
Greens are definitely a tricky colour to use and one that people have the most problem with, but there are loads of ways to keep them in check and looking nice. Addition focal areas such as some wild animals or birds can really add to a painting 😊
Sam you mention an artist how do spell his name so I can look him up. Thank you Kathy
Hey Kathy. His name is Edgar Payne, he is one of my favourite artists 😀
You look like Indian Film actor Sushant Singh
