    Love your style and attitude. Health problems actually brought me back to art after a long hiatus since a prolific childhood and in one sense it was a gift. I've been struggling a bit with finding my way to work with oil paints and seeing someone like yourself reminds me of what it should be about. One thing I have struggled with is getting fine lines and never thought to use the palette knife! You live you learn,Thanks

    You dont really get a "warm cool color" by mixing yellow into your violet... you start to grey the mix when you mix compliments like that, reduce saturation (FYI for painters learning to mix). Nice video, great painting.

    • @LearningPleinAir
      @LearningPleinAir  3 роки тому +6

      Perfectly said Bryan, and thanks for watching and commenting. 👍 Depending on what part of the video, I may have been talking about what I light heartedly call a "cwarm" (a cool and a warm) - but i dont really mix it, or over mix it to a gray. I take a warm puddle and a cool puddle, swipe a stroke from each and put it on the canvas, producing an undermixed warm/cool, .... your point for beginners on color mixing is well taken! , thanks buddy all the best to you 😀

    Thanks so much! I definitely need to work on varying my greens... Trying to get those subtle warms and cools can be so difficult sometimes! The joys of painting I suppose lol :D
    So you used to play pro hockey? Is hockey as brutal as some of the youtube videos show? (With guys getting shoved against the wall etc.)
    Anyways, my second semester of sophomore year at college is here :D This semester in painting class they're introducing us to watercolor, acrylic, and gouache. Right now we're starting with watercolor and all I can say is... YESHHHH! Going from oil painting (which obeys your commands quite nicely) to watercolor (which refuses to listen to anything) is a little bit jarring XD

    • @LearningPleinAir
      @LearningPleinAir  3 роки тому

      welcome !, 😀 I agree, for a while I was really liking black and cad yellow or black and yellow ochre for nice subtle greens, but..I eliminated black from my palette for a while to force myself to make more colorful shadows etc,
      yes I played on college scholarship at Miami University in Oxford OH, and then pro for a few years, it was a blessing in my life , but hard on the old body! ..yes its a pretty brutal sport
      Hope you have a great semester, LOL

    • @terryouimet5895
      @terryouimet5895 Рік тому

      I've painted some real thick stuff and not noticed cracking even 10-15 yrs years later, I do use various mediums in the later stages of my paintings which I think helps. I think if you look at Monet paintings and really old paintings you can see cracking, so eventually I think youre right but I find oils really resilient ...thanks again!

    I was like : I need to find a painter who paint loose and playful, and bam, you shown up on my recommendation! I am sooooo hooked, except omg man, way tooo many color on your palette which is exactly what I dislike since,,,, paint are heavy and normally I am just too lazy to carry all color especially plein air! Don’t u think too many color will not achieve color harmony ?! I used to have a teacher who told me you can have limited color and try not to match or mix exact the same color ! If I add a new color like Prussia blue I will need to add it all over or that area won’t match ‘ Also I sooooooo fvcking agree with you about don’t add white to green ! I learned it hard way omfg, add more yellow instead!

    • @LearningPleinAir
      @LearningPleinAir  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Hucheon!, glad you found my channel buddy and thanks for watching and commenting, good to hear your thoughts, Yeah I agree with your color harmony thoughts, a limited palette or split limited palette is a nice way to achieve that (ua-cam.com/video/F3RtKy_Gkaw/v-deo.html) check this vid out...but at the same time I don't use every color on there for every painting and I do limit the palette sometimes, I think its whatever works for you right, thats whats cool about plein air painting, seeing and mixing, being original and unique, not copying, no formulas....I think I can still achieve color harmony with 12 colors if my seeing and my mixing are spot on, great thoughts man, would love to get more of your feedback and let me know what kind of videos would help you 😎

      @@LearningPleinAir Thanks Terry. do you go to some plein air competitions? I would love to see a vlog of you going there , stamp your canvas, scouting site and why you pick those sites, finishing up the painting in time or doing quick draw , then film the reception if possible, hope you also win some award but i think those events mostly motivate us to paint instead of only aiming to win, but if you have tips how to win, that would be great too. Hope it is not too much for you lol. i mean last year my Escalanta plein air was kinda disaster, my plane landed so late, then pick up rental car at 6pm at airport, then forgot to buy canvas, ending up wasting a whole day next day to buy suppy, then drive back to Escalanta at Utah,,,,,i made manyyyyyy mistakes, ugh. good thing is someone bought my painting in the end but still dreadful trip
