I love how in Game Boy version, the "Now, it is the beginning of a fantastic story! Let us make a journey to the cave of monsters! Good luck!" screen was replaced with "Hurry up! Get the 'Moon Water', so you can help your brother" screen
That's because the Gameboy port isn't a direct port of the game, since the levels are different, though the final boss is the same.
@@Bloodreign1 And they shoehorned an environmental message into the "plot"... somehow.
It's a valid point. My theory is the fonts are so big it may not fit the whole screen. That's maybe why they use the moon water story. To make it short.
They were not able to do 2 players on Game Boy.
@@CarlosHernandez-nf4xd they could've used a smaller font
The original arcade version is super fluid, and have nice music, it's my favorite
i personally like the master system version of Bubble Bobble
I liked Amiga better
Ngl, the best Bubble Bobble in that time, in terms of accuracy, is the Sharp X68000 version. Damn, this computer was really powerful for that time. Damn, the sharp X68000 port of Final Fight was great for that time, even with less enemies in the screen
@@otaviofer5438 I 100% agree, the SharpX68000 is the most faithful and the NES comes second imo because the gameplay is exactly the same.
Versions that mess up with the music or don't have any get disqualified.
@Diskun OK. I mean, it's Bubble Bobble FFS. If you're playing Bubble Bobble without having the music stuck in your head for a week, it's not Bubble Bobble anymore. ;)
So sorry Diskun, we didn't know about the existence of 2 Spectrum versions and we missed it. Anyways, hope you have enjoyed the comparison!
@Diskun , you can piss off as well! The video is about actual ports to the game, so you and Stephane can kindly do humanity a huge favor and play a game of "chicken" with a speeding train.

Attempting to do so really should be punishable by law.

Um 128 anyone?
The sprites used for the ZXspectrum look like they are facing some kind of existential dread.
Every ZX spectrum game looks like it came from a bad gaming creepypasta.
Unfortunately because the Spectrum has an attribute limitation in which each 8x8-pixel character square on the screen can only contain one foreground colour and one background colour, this means that a whole mixture of colours to make Bub (and Bob, for that matter) look like the arcade original was simply impossible. This was probably as close as they were going to get given that attribute limitation.
Notice how the two-colour platforms always contain the colour of the sprites as well as another colour. This meant that Bub, Bob and the enemies could jump through the platforms without there being colour-clash issues.
Note that, if a person were to play _Bubble Bobble_ on a 128K Spectrum there *would* be that same music in the background as in the other versions (the 128K Spectrum had more memory and better sound capabilities than its lower-RAM counterparts).
@@Texy88 Didn't help that the ZX Spectrum was released back in 1982, four years before Bubble Bobble came out. In some aspect, it's a miracle they even got the game running on that platform.
@@doge-pal Or, more to the point, that the Spectrum ended up getting games at all, since Sir Clive Sinclair never intended the computer to be a games machine. It devoting less memory to the screen and to audio meant that it could run faster than its contemporaries. It was even able to cope with _Afterburner,_ while the Spectrum version (especially the 128K version) of _Chase H.Q._ is widely regarded as an absolute masterpiece; both of those games came out for it after _Bubble Bobble._
ikr what even was that lmao
As soon as the Atari ST version starts up, I feel like I walked into a rave party.
I’m not even mad, it’s a good rave party

the best version to me The Atari ST
About the ZX Spectrum version, there was 2 versions on the same tape, one for the 48K, and another for the 128K. This last version has BGM within the game. And with that version I discovered Bubble Bobble.
Whats interesting is how the Game Boy port changes the story slightly and some of the levels for a more engaging Single Player mode since it was a 1 player only version.
I'm surprised to find most versions of this game aren't cheap like the Donkey Kong ports, thats kinda awesome
Edit: but as always, the ZX Spectrum version is terrible
Well, the zx ver. is akward, but in 128 mode it has awesome music. ua-cam.com/video/Eva0b6F4s1w/v-deo.html
The ZX Spectrum was pretty dated when this port came out (it launched in 1982 and even from the start it was intended as a budget computer). The issue with it was that the sprites could only handle two colours so you either had to deal with colour bleeding (where other sprites around it would temporarily be the same colour) or have a game that’s in black and white (or two select colours).
True. But the Apple II version is even worse. 😂
I guess you can say the ZX Spectrum is for people who has spectrum Lol XD
@@fr_schmidlin The Apple II is even older than the ZX Spectrum. That thing came out back in 1977. It's a miracle it even ran the game.
If you have the 128K ZX Spectrum, you also get the music playing.
If anyone interested in the 128K music of Bubble Bobble, I've pasted a link to this video by sunteam:-

This video reminded me that I haven’t played bubble bobble in awhile. I guess I better go play it now lol
To be fair the MSX version is a MSX 2 version. Thanks for show It . Another very good video.
"Bub and Bob" for mac OS in the late 90's was my childhood experience with this game. Also yikes, I can't believe that horrible jump noise on CPC lol, whoever thought that was a good idea is mad (THE SPECTRUM IS WORSE OH NOOOO
I remember that clone as well. Looked really nice compared to the official ports, and the sound was pretty good too. Not the official music, though, since it is an unlicensed clone. Also, for whatever reason, the scroll direction was backwards from the official ports. Maybe the devs wanted it to seem like you were climbing instead of falling to the next level?
@@evknucklehead there's a clone of it called the Bub's brothers.
I never knew about the special modes in the FM Towns and Sharp X68000 versions. I particularly like the latter's "Sybubblun" mode that uses graphics and sound inspired by one of Taito's other arcade games: Syvalion.

Loved the ST version back in the day, the Master System game is an an absolutely fantastic conversion, and the X68000 is doing X68000 things - however, the 360 and Wii versions might look like decent visual updates, but the game's timing is so off it's shocking.
The x68000 version is probably my favorite, but the 360 and wii versions just look butt ugly
The SMS version was good yes, but it looks like it's being run on emulation with No Flicker enabled here; it didn't look that crisp in real life, sadly.

is there a difference between the NES and FDS version
also that theme music never ceases to make me happy
A claw game in an arcade near me (almost certainly unofficially) uses it. When I first walked by it, I thought, “Wait, that sounds like...No!”

Same thing.

The bass riff on the GBA version is awesome otherwise Wii/360 versions are graphically superior but on choice master system just for my nostalgic memories as a child god I wasted some time on this great video loved it
My favorite arcade /video game music of all time
The one I used to play was the Classic Mode in Bubble Bobble Double, released for iOS in 2010. It’s not on the App Store anymore but I played it a lot when I was little, it was exactly like the original 1986 Arcade version.
Unfortunately Bubble Bobble Classic is not a sufficient replacement. The controls are way worse and the buttons covering the screen don’t go away.
It’s probably on internet archives.
My father should be in heaven because he never complained about me playing this game in my GameBoy with music.
May pops be resting in peace in Christ. :)
I can't believe that there are so many people hating on ZX Spectrum and Apple II ports. You can't judge a port just because of its graphics and sound - you know that is hard to make a game like this run on those systems. There are just kids that don't know how games were in the past and they just consider them inferior to today's games.
If someone tries to sting my comment saying things like "Fuck you" I'll report him to UA-cam.
The NES soundchip is just so good, that version of the song has always been my fave but I think I’m biased as that’s the version I played growing up

I'm genuinely impressed with how competent the Amiga version of the Bubble Bobble theme sounds, like wow.
Probably not many people know this, but even the ports that tried to be accurate to the arcade have a lot of minor differences that changes the way to play, like for example in PS1 and Saturn versions the character falls way more quickly. I can like this change because in the OG it could be tedious being all the time in "low gravity mode" but it also gives it a way different feeling gameplay. The white ghosts also throw the rocks without any advise making them a bit more challenging, overall the enemies behavior varies a bit between the arcade. And the NES release lacks some of the secrets of the Arcade (although considering how demanding they are, i dont miss them). Soundtrack wise i think Arcade is by far the best, i cant believe they screwed up the main theme in the rest of the versions, even PS1 which has CDs. Thats a bit lazy imo. I think most of the differences may be because they lost the source code but others are probably because they were a bit rushed. Although i still prefer most of the console ports despite all of the changes because... well, having to beat 100 levels with just 3 lifes in Arcade is just bullsh...
I personally grew up with the PlayStation 1 version called "Bubble Bobble! Also featuring Rainbow Island!"
Arcade: Plays the usual very happy music
Less powerful hardware: no music
Genuinely curious about the ZXspectrum version: Why did the jumping sound elevate in pitch when sprites started disappearing from the screen?
Probably had something to do with the system not needing as much time for processing stuff with fewer items on screen, so everything, including the sound effects, speeds up. A lot of the older systems didn't have dedicated sound hardware or real-time clocks to keep track of the timings.
Something similar would happen with the Apple II version if you played it on a faster Apple II, like the IIc+ and the IIgs in their fast modes, or with an accelerator card like the Transwarp series. Even different revisions of the 6502 chip could result in slight pitch differences.

The Amiga version is by far the best version I think!
For some reason it is lacking some key sound effects which makes zero sense given the Amigas fantastic sound hardware.
Check out Tiny Bobble. Much better port on the Amiga.
I don't get the audacity of the people who listen to the Bubble Bobble music and think "I can improve this".

Great compilation, good job!. Maybe I missed BB4CPC, the new version (I believe 2016) that appeared for Amstrad CPC, 100 times better than the Amstrad original (but ok... only original versions)
the memories of playing this game everyday on my nes writing down all the level codes
Nostalgia.
I got introduced first to Bubble Bobble c64. I thought it was good because it had the secret room intact. I also played on the arcade as well. Later on I got BB NES and I thought it wasn't as good because it was less faithful to the original and lacking the secret rooms. But it also has some interesting new and hard concept of doing the 2 moments at level 99 in a way that is very hard due to the mapping of the level.
I preferred the arcade version of true ending though, as it is about friendship and playing together. Of course, often being solo player, I simply fed coins into the second player and let Bob stand there while I defeat Super Drunk.
...that moment when you accidenally grabbed a lsrge diamond in the Atari ST version.
The C64 was the first version I ever played and the only one I ever finished without dying once

Nintendo: Yes.
Programmers: Ok, we have better hardware because we're using discs, so how will the game look? Maybe we just put the arcade version on there and optimize the controls so they work on the Famicom?
Nintendo: No, it'll be the same as the Famicom version.
Programmers: Why? People wouldn't want to buy the same game on the cartridge when the only difference is that it's on a disc!
Nintendo: Actually, there will be 2 differences.
Programmers: What do you mean 2 differences?
Nintendo: Just change the colors a little bit and they'll buy it.
Programmers: I hate this idea but fine.
Huh. Didn't know there was a mobile version released this year. And they look like good, no-nonsense versions too. Surprised they aren't emulation.
