Gotta say, that Atari 2600 version is pretty darn impressive considering the extreme limitations of the hardware. Never even heard of a "Sord" or a "Gakken Tabletop" before.
One of my favorite 2600 games right behind Dragon Stomper and Superman.
@@thesparxeffect9734 Dragon Stomper! Regarded as one of, if not THE, very first RPGs! The first time I finished that game I flew through the house screaming "I made it!" to everyone. It was 3am.
@@thesparxeffect9734 I had a friend that had studied the 2600 Superman (and mapped it out) so much that he figured out how to complete the game in less than 2 minutes. Not much fun in that but impressive nonetheless.
It is pretty impressive.
Kinda like the bootleg Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country NES games
I got the Gakken Tabletop, and *> I

Why the sprites have a black square?
I'm so used to the Atari 5200 versions of games being identical to the ones for Atari's 8-bit computers that I wasn't at all prepared for how different their two versions of Dig Dug were. 😳
@@AussieArcade Came here to say this; the version I have on my 800 is similar to what was shown, but the music is different and the color palette closer to the arcade.
It's gotta be about the first game where I have seen major differences between the two versions!
@@jday9075 Space Invaders is huge as well. 8 bit version was my favorite
Ok
@@AJACreates9475 the 1982 and 2005 Arrangement versions of DigDug are both the best. Which versions you wanna prefer?
21:27 (Arcade arrangement) was also on the namco museum on the ps2 loved that version easily my favorite
I should try it rn I am trying lots of namco games today and i have that namco museum.
ah Dig Dug.
One of the Games i like to Play, sometimes.
u are in other video
It's really gone through a lot of changes, I'm honestly surprised at how many versions of dig dug there are.
I count 15.
14:00 SEIZURE/HEADACHE WARNING
That's a lotta versions!!
It was a fairly big hit for Namco and one of the most beloved titles from the 1980-83 "golden age" of arcade games, so it was naturally a candidate for being ported to multiple platforms. I'm surprised it didn't get a ZX Spectrum port, but perhaps it didn't do as well in British arcades as in Japanese and North American arcades-or maybe someone made a clone that beat Atari and Namco to the punch.
Oh buddy, you should of seen the pacman comparison. It was a marathon even with 20 - 30 seconds of footage for each of them.
@@Sinistar1983 Yeah, pacman is so popular that it's ported to most of the gaming stuff.
@@Sinistar1983 Oh buddy, you should’ve seen the Prince of Persia Comparison, it’s A around the world marathon. With it being longer!

6:57 16-Bit Music on a 8-bit System?!
That system, the NEC PC-8001mkII SR has a Yamaha YM2203 sound chip, which uses FM synthesis just like the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. That is why it has such a similar sound.
It's not that "8 bit" or "16 bit" music are a thing, what defines the quality of the sound, is the sound chip, just as Will says, that system has a Yamaha YM2203
Yes, this one sound so good!
And PC-8001mkII SR too!
Say that to the Japan only version of the SEGA Mark III/Master System, the version 2.1.
Dig Dug is one of my favorite arcade games
I love Dig Dug music. It makes me feel happy :D
the apple 2 music does not make me feel happy
we sing it from time to time at home as a joke
@@Tretheperson It makes me feel scared, like a thousand flying demons are about to horribly kill my entire neighborhood
The music stops when you stop moving though.
There is actually one version missing that was featured in the PC collection Namco All-Stars (alongside Pac-Man). It features both a Classic and Remake mode, the latter upgrading the graphics to look like the DS game "Digging Strike" - which actually included Round 1 as a tutorial.
I managed to find it on BigFish games ages ago, but unsure of what other platforms it's available for nowadays.
Love me some Dig Dug. Still got my original copy of the Atari 2600 version.
Agreed. I love Dig Dug! Mainly the arcade version. But I also like the arrangement version.
@Skyler Messier Cool! I play that version of the game on an emulator though.
@@Its_PacFan me too
Although Fygar can get a bit annoying with the constant fire breathing, he still finds a place in my heart. Love you, Fygar.

@@purwantiallan5089 If they are forgotten I will die
Nice job with this video! Interesting in the Game Boy “New Mode” Dig Dug is trying to get keys to go to the next level while being swarmed by Pooka and Fygar galore. I remember the Apple II fondly like some of our UK friends remember the ZX Spectrum. Good times.
DigDug was my favorite arcade game, I had a little controller that you could plug into the TV man was that fun to play with

This is amazing, the day I found your channel I fell in love with your videos. Man Apple II gave me an ear surgery. My favorite one is the NES version of Dig Dug.To be honest I only knew the nes version but when I saw the MSX version it was very smooth I liked it.

C64 version was great, if a bit slow and squashed to a landscape ratio.
C64 Dig Dug is an NTSC game and there is no PAL optimised version (eventho it works on PAL machines, but squashed and slowed as a result). It looks and plays fine at 60Hz. All C64 emulators default to PAL for some reason, so the footage is often altered when it comes to games made for the American units.
@@amerigocosta7452 And an annoying few have no option to switch to NTSC 😶
the nec-pc-8801 looks funnier and cringe
Still a big fan of the MSX version for nostalgic reasons. 40 years after its release the arcade version still holds up for exciting high score attempts along friends.
MSX and NES and 1982 originals are still better.
I didn't know the old version of Dig Dug. The retro feeling brings out the times and is the most cute. 😊
Loved that game, such a classic ^^
It was awesome when they actually included Taizou in Namco X Capcom ^^
Taizo Hori legacies never gonna be forgotten.
for me it's the best videogame ever created, is the perfect synthesis of gameplay, graphics and music. with my brother and my dad we devoured it on the commodore 64

I remember being 3 and playing Dig dug on a mortorla flip phone lol
DigDug in the Arcade and PSP are simply amazing.
the TI-99 is my favorite version!
I remember having the Windows or DOS version as part of some Namco Collection and I played it a lot. It was my favorite game in it.
Same. The collection I had for Windows was Microsoft Return of Arcade, which had Dig Dug, Galaxian, Pac-Man, and Pole Position. And there was an updated anniversary version of that collection that had Ms. Pac-Man too but I had the original version of the collection.
@@ThunderDragonRandy Yes, I think I had that one! The original without the Ms. Pac-Man.
Man how solid were the NES and Gameboy given the eras in which they were released!
Thank you for making the versions comparison of “Dig Dug”.
Can you make the versions comparisons of these?:
“Ms. Pac-Man”
“Popeye (1982)”
Exidy’s “Mouse Trap”
“Frogger”
“Q*bert”
“Dragon’s Lair”
“Space Ace”
I'm happy because one of the items on that list contains the word "Dragon".
You need to look at the Gameboy Color port for Dragon's Lair!
@@pixelprime5908 I already know about this and looked at this.
Keep up the good work retrosutra!
My first arcade favorite when I was quite little.
Great comparison/contrast video! I own a copy of the Atari 7800 port, and can emulate both the Atari VCS/2600 port, and the ColecoVision port. Including a recommendation, and a link to your video on my channel's video reviewing the Atari 7800 port.
The PSP having different arrangements _(not just for Dig-Dig)_ than the PS2 was ... interesting.
I remember playing this on namco museum for the n64 (also on a ps4!)
Awesome work!
My mom put me on to dig dug back on the N64. We played the hell out this. One of the few games she was better than me at
I swear I remember playing a port of Dig Dug on MS DOS when I was about 6 years old
I suppose is the PC Booter version, actually the game was released in a self bootable disc with DOS embedded in it. Thank you for watching!
@Nic ZeroNineEightOneThreeTwoThree no, it's called PC DOS
5:23 kind of looks like he’s digging through a chocolate cake

It Wasn't His Fault
It was pretty much Charlie and the chocolate factory that’s responsible pretty much and I’ll let you guess why
He missed a carrot
So many Systems i wasn't aware that they even existed... also insane that there so many Ports... The first Time i've played Dig Dug was on the GBA this Year, bought a couple of Games and it was inbetween :>....
retrosutra, quick question, what editor do you use to make the videos?
And what emulator(s) do you use?
7:35 Lol, CHARACTOR
The arcade and the Arrangement versions are my favorites even though I dont get far without a cheat
the first dig dug i played was for the apple ][ back in the late 80s it was hard but fun!!! My local arcade has the original. The nes version was good too.
Me: I want Dig Dug
Mom: We have Dig Dug at home
Dig Dug at home: 10:34
That's funny 😂
I love Dig Dug Arrangement.
Amazing
There’s also a Sharp Mz-1500 version of Dig Dug
I played a version of Dig Dug on a Stranger Things dedicated handheld console, it mostly tried to be like the original arcade game even though it was very low resolution.
So what's the best version?
I think arcade, x68000 and PlayStation(looks similar), msx looks as having some extra features and game boy have a nice version.
there was also a version on mobile that was just like the PSP version but touch controls. (as a kid I would always just play the demo, it was not a standalone app and i don't remember what it was or if it's still up. Definitely compatible with iPhone 3GS, as that's what I played it on when I was little.)
hay is that the android soundfont you're using in the j2me footage?
I like the original Dig Dug because that looked a lot cooler than other versions
What a wonderful game, but the way of dealing with enemies is actually brutal if you put any thought into it...
Well, almost every game has a brutal way of killing enemies when you think of it
@@epicgamer_7985 ... Come to think of it...
@Flyin' Steve Hmm... If I think about it I have to say; You are right, Sir!

HOLY CRAP THE NEC PC-8801
Namco sure has a habit of porting the MSX versions to NES
So lot of 8-biters were in 80s, just wow :)
DigDug in Arcade 1982 Original, NES from 1985 and DigDug Arrangement all considered to be the best ports for DigDug.
24:11 this used to be on Apple too called Dig Dug remix. Man I miss it, they deleted it from the App Store.
Dig dug in my opinion is very underrated and massively underserved in terms of the qualities of the remasters remakes and ports. nothing has beat the original arcade version which is a damn shame
Yeah, It's like if they want to stay away from Dig Dug.
I Wonder why.
By all rights, the Atari 5200 version can also run on Atari 8-bit computers as it's just a stripped down Atari 400.
there should be a dig dug custom admin command in roblox its basically gonna be u playing dig dug but whenever you kill a looks or fygar a random player in the server gets banned or kicked (the one who did the admin command cant get kicked if u were wondering) BTW before they get kicked a dig dug appears in game and pumps the unlucky player (for fun you can also change the version of dig dug u want ex: TI 99 MSX NES MEC)
Commodore max machine is where?
also there is a repeat in the nec pc 8001 mk2 sr is there twice
Dig dug more like damn dug because that's a lot of versions..!
I liked the nes version of dig dug but I couldn't find the one I grew up with
I had this game in Atari XE, so, that's my favorite version
i'm thinking about someone making a version of dig dug on the amstrad pc
Sjećam se ovog s komodorca ;-)
Why do I dig the M5's aesthetics so much?
Digging the Dug
The sound on the Apple to make me want to have a hernia
Sord M5 sounds like NES
Never knew these existed
Left out a PC version called 'Dig-Dug Deeper'.
Sharp X68000 version is really impressive considering it's a port and not emulated like the Windows and PlayStation versions.
Muito bom😁
The music of the NEC PC-8801 makes me want to die...(edit, so does the Texas instruments one and the Apple II, EDIT 2, as well as the sharp x1
Sounds like a Game & Watch.
Character is Bomberman?
Should at least try to incorporate all aspects of the game in each sample. Didn’t get to see rocks dropped in many of them.
The concept for this game is incredibly gruesome if you think about it.
Haha deviantart go *brrrrrrrrr*
I was curious about this game so i searched for it
I can definitely see why the ColecoVision version was not released. That is horrible, the ColecoVision is capable of much better.
Seems like if you want something actually looks and plays like the arcade version the good old namco museum collection for the PS 1 is the way to go, sharp version looks great also but the shipping costs would probably be outrageous and NES actually looks really faithful also.,
Atari 5200's Dig Dug gives me apocalypse vibes.
Sad that there is no Amstrad CPC or Zx spectrum port :(
Yea they usally port into those system
I think that (In my opinion) that it a good choice not to port Dig Dug to those two computers, as they usually have pretty slow and horrible ports.
@@Its_PacFanHowever, with pro programming, it can run smooth as butter.
