    Cleaning just depends on circumstance. I drove about 500 miles through the Atacama desert (Andes Chile) and had to clean the filter. Also got caught in a dust storm in Arizona and had to clean the filter.
    On both of those occasions diminished engine performance was obvious. Regular day to day driving you won’t notice the decrease in engine performance, but it happens. I keep track of my gas/mileage and have seen a loss of mileage per tank when the filter is dirty.

      @@thepiratehandyman2225 ; I have seen "the basics of an engine" and "checking the tire pressure" videos which were most needed. I have so many questions, but here are some of my suggestions; 1-how to change and choose windshield wipers/hubcaps/lights, 2- how to take off the light fixtures, clean, and put them back on, 3- what kind of maintenance (and how often) needed to keep a car running smoothly and for a long time?, 4- why is it getting hard to turn the wheels? Oh btw, I am watching your commercials too to support you and I hope it's going to you and not UA-cam. Thank you so much in advance.

    • @thepiratehandyman2225
      @thepiratehandyman2225  11 місяців тому +1

      Nay, matey, blowing air into the filter pushes the dirt INTO the filter - you want to pull the dirt OUT of the filter.

    I’ve got a code reading on my car that says I either have an air filter problem, or a mass airflow sensor problem. I hope it’s not the latter because that is costly. Do you have any tips for that part? I’m trying to get the Service Engine light to turn off.

    • @thepiratehandyman2225
      @thepiratehandyman2225  6 місяців тому

      Aye, lass, have you cleaned the air filter on the engine, as well as the cabin filter? Either one may be causing the problem.

    • @gusg7234
      @gusg7234 5 місяців тому

      Pull the mass air flow sensor and clean it with a special aerosol spray specifically made for task. Be very careful not to manhandle the sensor as they are very expensive. Also a good idea to change out your PCV valve. Both of these are very easy to do. In fact you can find videos on how to do this on UA-cam for your specific vehicle! Doing it yourself will save you a lot of money vs having the dealership do it. You may need to drive your vehicle awhile for the codes to clear themselves. You might find a nice salesman at a local auto parts store to clear the codes for you, even thought they are not supposed to do it. These are the stores that will let you use a scanner to read check engine light. Those same scanners can clear the codes if you know how. I didn’t, but the counter guy did it for me and I gave him $5.

    I wonder if this actually helps a engine get cleaner air or if it’s much more dirty.
    …I mostly think this would actually be worse than replacement..because touching the inlet like he did when the vacuum was pulling air..he scuffed the fibers..which probably causes larger gaps in the filter media and also letting more dirt through.

    • @allglad
      @allglad 2 роки тому

      I recall seeing/hearing some premium air filters that can be washed…that or replacement would be my choice rather than trying to clean a filter similar to stock filters…like he did here.

    • @thepiratehandyman2225
      @thepiratehandyman2225  2 роки тому +3

      I agree that replacement is best, but the point is saving money. I've done this for years, and never had an issue with any engine or fuel system having dirt gum things up. But I do agree, replacing is the best, and you still save coin by doing it yourself. Sail on, matey, and thanks for the comments!

    • @tomgeniewang
      @tomgeniewang 2 роки тому

      @@allglad if the air pressure is high enough, i agree that it would make the fibres break and letting more particles through. But i think it would definately ok if we just just the airflow similar to what the airflow through the filter when it's working in the car.

    • @thepiratehandyman2225

      Nay, matey, the fibrous composition of the filter would probably cause the dirt to cling and harden. I would stick with the vacuum.

    Excuse me but I've paid mechanics for most jobs. And lately im doing most repairs myself. Most of all I can spend that mechanic fee on better parts than worrying what massive bill im gonna get. And I know where everything is, how old it is. Today I pulled out an 8 year old cheap air filter. Filled with god knows what. And im sure it's not black by design. And I've payed mechanics to change it. But they probably didn't think id check.
