Just watched this again to remind me how to face a quilt rather than bind; I don't use this often but really wanted this on my latest quilt finish as a gift for my cousin. So informative and the only one I found that also showed how to put a sleeve on the top of the quilt (and so great seeing Enzo snoozing in the background)!!
I was looking for a good tutorial on a facing. Found a couple that didn’t look clear to me and then yours. I’ve followed you for years and just knew you would explain the process. I was right! Thank you very much for the pleasant tutorial. I also liked the rod pocket idea I didn’t think about and included it also. Thank you again for the tutorial.
Okay you’re a little bit hilarious! And have a bit of .......SQUIRREL! But. So I watched a lot of facing videos, because I was going to make one for one specific step. But you did it and explained it well. That step where you edge stitch the facing to help it pull to the back, which in garment construction is called under stitching, is what every other facing video is missing. I love that you incorporate a hanging sleeve into your facing so seamlessly 😅😂🤣. SEAMlessly, little sewing humor there.
That is what I want to share that quilting is not hard...there is a way to break down anything to an attainable process...and the variety of quilting has a chapter for everyone!

What cute little toes you have ♥ Love the facing idea. I have tried it on small journal quilts, but love seeing it on a larger quilt. It really does look spectacular on your quilt!! Great idea to make the top strip wider for hanging the quilt. Thank you for all the time you spend sharing with us.
I just used your facing method for a wall hanging. That tip about the 1/8 inch seam is what makes the facing work. I'd forgotten about that trick. When I sewed clothes, that was always part of the pattern instructions for facings around armholes and necklines. Terrific video!
Hello, Resident Opinionator! Thank you for introducing me to quilt facing, which uses the same under stitching technique as in apparel sewing WITHOUT the stressful clipping. Love your pedi, especially the color that looks like a polish I have, called “Fearless”. My mother left this earth last May sporting a pedi in a similar color called “Cabana Boy”. Ha! Thanks again for fun in the bee hive 🙋🏻
Quilt Roadies Yes ma’am, she was your/our kind of gal! She had a collection of toe socks she wore with sandals teaching 1st and 2nd grade, and used a chunk of retirement money tree cash for sewing fabric and another for her own sets of Legos that she played with alongside her grandchildren. I miss her very much.
First off, I absolutely love your cross stitch project!! It turned out beautiful! (I am an avid cross stitcher.). Secondly, thanks for sharing your “facing a quilt” tutorial. I’ve seen a few quilts with this technique but never tried it. I think I will. The technique of sewing the seam toward the facing is a garment technique. I used to sew some of my own clothes and do some sewing for my granddaughter now. I do prefer quilting though. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks!

Oh I am so glad you are inspired! It was fun converting Pat's pattern to a wool pattern and I increased the size by adding an additional border to make it 40 x 40 inches.

I'm guessing this is a technique that is starting to catch on due to, as I think you said, the modern quilts. Love this whole cloth quilt. Love your videos. Keep them coming.

Although I love regular binding, this is a good alternative! Thanks for clear instructions. I, too have a Janome Horizon (an older one with the red front), and absolutely love it. Also, I have the Panasonic cordless iron, and love that as well.

stuffing the binding was a check off by judges in major shows... and I had friends who would actually cut batting in little strips and sew it in as they tacked the binding down. me...I would just leave more backing and batting and fold it in while tacking the binding down :)
Beautiful job! I would love to know if anyone has used this method (or any facing method) on a larger quilt. Would this work for a quilt that is 50 by 70 or larger?
Hi Anna, just started following you and want to say how professional and entertaining your videos are. I would love to try wool appliqué, is there a difference between felted wool and wool felt. Also what is the best source of the wool, I’m in Canada and no one seems to have it.
Thank you for coming along with us :) there is a difference...all wool used in quilting should be felted and that means it has been washed and dried to tighten the weave. Wool felt is a different beast and I don't care for the feel of it...but with that said some people like working with it...it is all preference. I love the hand dyed wool. I think the best resource is to sign up for a block of the month or kits...because the expense is spread out rather than all at once. Try a kit from Buttermilk Basin...they are so cute!

Thank you! The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is on the same day every year. The second Saturday in July. it is preceeded by a week of classes called the Quilter's Affair and that brochure is online at the Stitchin' Post web site. It is a non judged show open to anyone who wants to hang their quilt but there is a deadline for submission :)
Hi Anna. Do you lengthen your stitch when you sew this way? I too have a Panasonic and I love mine as well. Have a good day, hope your weather improves. It was 87 here for two days and needed the AC. Then it was 63 in the house and I needed heat. That is Mother Nature for you.
I hate to say...I don't change anything on my machine or by hand....I would trade my 31 for your 87 :) Mother Nature...that relative you love but hope she doesn't visit long, lol
I worked peds then one of the PP nurses talked me into coming to OB so I worked L&D, PP. & NB Nsy as a aide back in the 70’s. I joined the Army in 80 ended up marrying a fellow soldier & when I got out of the Army & was out for about 10yrs I went back to school I got my LPN didn’t get my RN as they only excepted so many at a time & when I got my license I went to work and my husband went to school . After that we both worked in nursing. He was Army trained as a LPN I opted to wait as with both of us active duty they wouldn’t guarantee that we’d stay together. I worked 22 yrs as a aide n 23yrs as a LPN. I was forced into retirement d/t bad hips, back, & a heart attack that I never felt 🤷♀️Loved my nursing jobs. Specialized with vents n trachs n gt

WOOOW! Learned a LOT from you today, TFS! 1. What's this about leaving fabric for your binding to be more puffy? 2. BRILLIANT idea on the magnetic tool holder! 3. Cordless iron?! WOO HOO! Again, TFS! (HUUGS) and Texas Bluebonnet Alohas to ya!
stuffing the binding was a check off by judges in major shows... and I had friends who would actually cut batting in little strips and sew it in as they tacked the binding down. me...I would just leave more backing and batting and fold it in while tacking the binding down :)
Oh wow! Okay, but how do you leave more backing and batting w/o cutting the top? Coz I love my puffy batting ^ _ ^

oh yes....it would give it a totally different look. This method does not decrease the work but just gives it a simpler/modern twist.

Hi Anna, just started following you and want to say how professional and entertaining your videos are. I would love to try wool appliqué, is there a difference between felted wool and wool felt. Also what is the best source of the wool, I’m in Canada and no one seems to have it.
Thank you for coming along with us :) there is a difference...all wool used in quilting should be felted and that means it has been washed and dried to tighten the weave. Wool felt is a different beast and I don't care for the feel of it...but with that said some people like working with it...it is all preference. I love the hand dyed wool. I think the best resource is to sign up for a block of the month or kits...because the expense is spread out rather than all at once. Try a kit from Buttermilk Basin...they are so cute!

Thank you! The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is on the same day every year. The second Saturday in July. it is preceeded by a week of classes called the Quilter's Affair and that brochure is online at the Stitchin' Post web site. It is a non judged show open to anyone who wants to hang their quilt but there is a deadline for submission :)
Anyone can come see it in Sister's Oregon.
Yes it is a FREE one day outdoor show that will take a full day to see all the quilts!

Hi Anna. Do you lengthen your stitch when you sew this way? I too have a Panasonic and I love mine as well. Have a good day, hope your weather improves. It was 87 here for two days and needed the AC. Then it was 63 in the house and I needed heat. That is Mother Nature for you.
I hate to say...I don't change anything on my machine or by hand....I would trade my 31 for your 87 :) Mother Nature...that relative you love but hope she doesn't visit long, lol

It's about 500 sq ft. No magnet :) it is attached with a velcro square...clever huh! Thanks for stopping by!
I like this but I'm a machine quilter I don't hand stitch anything I wonder if I can find a decent way to do this method with machine quilting
You must machine stitch down your bindings 😀 quilters are clever...you may figure out a way!

What did you do when you worked in the hospital?
I was a L&D nurse for many years and the last 8 years worked for the OR😀
I worked peds then one of the PP nurses talked me into coming to OB so I worked L&D, PP. & NB Nsy as a aide back in the 70’s. I joined the Army in 80 ended up marrying a fellow soldier & when I got out of the Army & was out for about 10yrs I went back to school I got my LPN didn’t get my RN as they only excepted so many at a time & when I got my license I went to work and my husband went to school . After that we both worked in nursing. He was Army trained as a LPN I opted to wait as with both of us active duty they wouldn’t guarantee that we’d stay together. I worked 22 yrs as a aide n 23yrs as a LPN. I was forced into retirement d/t bad hips, back, & a heart attack that I never felt 🤷♀️Loved my nursing jobs. Specialized with vents n trachs n gt
