Creating a bold fashion image using a fisheye lens! 😲

- Fisheye lenses provide an incredibly unusual perspective, allowing you to create images and effects that are impossible with other tools.
In fact, some fisheye lenses can provide a 180 degree view of the scene in front of you and may even capture the image as a circle/sphere!
While this tool seems rather unique and niche, it has been used in pop culture for decades whether 1960s psychedelic album covers, early 90s music videos, and in recent creative fashion editorials.
In this shoot I use my Canon 8-15mm F/4 fisheye lens to create a this super unique image!
There are a few key elements that change how the visual in your fisheye photo with this lens will look:
1. Focal length: The focal length you choose will affect the field-of-view in the shot, the compression of the shot, and the overall exaggeration of perspective created by the fisheye. Furthermore, at the wider focal length the image will appear like a circle! When zooming in more (toward 15mm) the image will again fill the rectangular frame.
2. Distance to subject: The closer you get to your subject the more the distortion/perspective of the lens will be exaggerated. Because of the wide focal length you will have to move slightly closer so that the subject is not tiny in the frame, but remember that the distance to subject combined with camera angle (see below) will change which parts of the subject are emphasized.
3. Camera Angle: Whether you and standing, crouching, or laying on the floor will each drastically change the appearance of the shot. Whatever is closest to the camera will appear largest, so in this shot by getting on the floor I was able to emphasize the feet/shoes the most.
4. Subject Pose: How the subject poses their body will make a big difference in the use of the fisheye perspective. Are they leaning to or away from the camera? Are they putting one part of their body closer to camera, making it appear much larger? In this shot I have my subject put her foot very close to the camera, giving it also ‘cartoon-like’ proportions.
To create this image zoomed in (past the circular effect), got at a low angle, and had my subject put her feet closest to camera. All of these things created an image where the feet were exaggerated but while still keeping the head in a decent shape. When I composed her head too far toward the edges of the frame or got too close at a wider focal length, the head started to become oblong and misshapen.
The light for this image was a single bare bulb (hard light) strobe with the subject against a 12ft white seamless background, creating a clean surface that was easy to cut her out from, allowing me to create a more graphic visual for the final artwork!
This particular shoot was inspired by the incredible foxxatron -- check them out and give them some social love!

This is a really very good introduction to the fisheye lens, really well done. It is not often I make positive comments online so this is high praise indeed. The photos were great. The model certainly knew her job. That takes nothing away from the photographer and as said afore, what a great little tutorial.
The most useful review of this lens. Lindsay, I really appreciate your clear demonstration of each focal length.
Model was on fire 10/10
I’ll buy your audiobook Lindsay!! Love your teaching style and Voice. You are a pro
Thanks so much! :)
Oh my! Thanks for having me:) I love this ❤️❤️
Thank you!
I love how you show your troubleshooting
i saw the image in IG and now the video just popped up amazing shot!!!!
I recently played with fisheye lens for portraits in my last quarter in lighting class. I didn’t have a subject so I used myself. Didn’t like the result very much but now I’m inspired. Thanks Lindsay.
Thank you Lindsay! Really interesting! Best teacher in the world! Thanks for sharing!
Thank u
having a live demonstration is just perfect 🤩 tons of people just show photos, and you lose that essence of your thought process. subbed
Thank you for watching and subscribing! :)
CoCo is FAB!!! Great photos Lindsay!
Wow! I would love to see this as one of your workshops. Stunning shots again Lindsay!
absolutely fantastic!!! totally love the shot and how you pushed the envelope. totally excellent!!
The model😍😍
Right at the start of the video you actually convinced me 100% to the why's you are producing these videos, as you mentioned in your previous videos. Short, sweet and right to the point and you are really doing it and achieving what you set out to do. There are so many insight in the content, people just look at how she directs and takes control of the whole situation "shoot". Photographers need to be able to be "directors" as well when shooting people, except for street, journalism and normal candid photography. Please note how, she is dressed and especially her shoes. Not dressed for work comfort, but making a statement and showing the model that she is working with the same footwear challenge, discomfort..... Look at how the backdrop is treated, as a expendable item, and that is what it really is, in order to achieve the goal or the result that needs to be achieved. There is much more being insightful things being presented and done here that you might think or notice that makes pro's, pro's. Beside the obvious one also needs to keep in mind that you need to have clients and models willing and wanting to revert to and work with you every time. Excellent and very insightful, Thank You.
Thank you so much for your thoughts and kind words! :)
End photos were magnificent! As always 😎
Obsessed with these. Would love to see your post process!
It was a lot... fundamentally I cut her outs, added contrast, decreased saturation, popped the contrast in the highlights, pulled out red in skin and increased red in clothing.
@@lindsayadlerphoto Thank you
This just made me fell more in love with fashion photography ❤️ definitely subscribing for more
Wow! It works. And your explanations were very instructive! Thanks for posting this.

Love this! Very creative!
stunning!
I met you at photoshop world in orlando I think it was 2019 love your work and thank you for persuading me to get this lens for my work
so thankful for this as a beginner newbie photographer
Glad you enjoyed it. :)
Thanks so much for sharing! I have been thinking about this for a while now. I actually bought a 14mm lens to use for 4K on the EOSR and I have been using it more and more for portraits and Fashion work. You have inspired me to jump in and plan an entire shoot just for the wide angle look.
Very inspiring! I wish you would have talked about your settings and where you focus. I suspect it was shot at f/16 and you focus closest point to get everything in focus.
Amazing photos 😍
You and your red color 😍😄. STUNNING 🥰
Thanks! :D
Thank You!!!! 🥰
LOVE IT! thank you soooo much!
I love this so much! Fills me with ideas 🔥
Great inspo/tips! The last set of shots has a pure white background - no shadows- I assume you changed up the lighting to include 2 strobes to illuminate just the backdrop for those??
No. She post-processes every single one of her final images. The shadows will have been erased in Photoshop.
Just cut them out! Was inspired by foxxtron (visual artist / photographer) who does this effect.
Just lovely
Tim walker uses a 35mm on a Pentax 6x7.
Nice video ! Thank you! ))) I want one!
Amazing as usual!!! WOW!!!! Thanks a lot!
I have used fisheye lenses for buildings and car photography 8mm it gives a different perspective to the cars and the buildings
Your photoshop skills are masterful! Nice work, nice color and skin tone 🔥🔥🔥 love it!! I’m looking into fish eye but I’m so scared cause I’m not sure which way too go. I just know I want to do fashion shoot in the city and studio.
Pretty sure you don't have to be scared lol, just try it out.
LOVE IT!
I’m going to go hunt down the fish eye I bought years ago, the one gathering dust in the back of the cupboard! This could be a whole lot of fun 😃 thanks for sharing! Brilliant as always
So freaking good omg
¡You are the BEST!
lol thank you!
I love you so much omggggg
Flawless video!! Love it!! One question, how do you achieve that perfect white and pure background in post?
Try "select subject' option in Photoshop and then invert the selection and brighten!
@@lindsayadlerphoto I will try that, thank u!! 💕
Who is old enough to confirm that they used fisheye lenses in 90s hip hop music videos 🙋🏼♂️ (Puff Daddy, Redman, etc)
👏👏👏👏😍😍😍
Really great video! Just got my fisheye today. Quick question, when you did the editing of the photos and made the background all white did you remove the shadows or is that how you photographed the model? Im just curious to know if keeping shadows in is a good thing or not.
Holy shit you killed it. Excellent results, excellent lesson. Fank yewwwwwww :-)
Fisheye stuff : this kind of photography is important i love fish eye photography a guy was teaching how to shoot a building from the side walk to the top of the building : mines didn't come out like his _ i believe if i took Lindsey's approach with the fish eye it would be much more interesting to look at.. .
Hi Lindsay! What is that cable holder you are using under your cam ?
Thanks!
It's a Tether Tools Tetherblock: adorama.rfvk.net/dvRXQ
Great vid Lindsay..........but get those heels off when shooting!!
Why?
so much fun
Wow Lindsay, great shots. Totally "you" and great art direction (by you I presume).
Thank you so much! :D
Wow!! love this look! question but roller c-stand boom / roller lightstand do you use? is seems lower than the one I Have
I left right after she said "Tim Walker Fisheye"
Thanks?
@@lindsayadlerphoto I came right back LOL! I was wondering who the guy was!
Awesome video!
Very Informative. Just one Question.
What are the camera setting?
1/200 F11 ISO 200
nice ! is it so different than a picture taken at 14mm with a Z 14-30mm F/4 lens ? I was just looking for it for my Z6ii. I think a 16mm or 20mm F/1.8 already gives such effect, even less extreme, isn't it ? I would be interested with same kind of shooting with more "standard" lens we use daily.
hmmmm is there anything you can't do? Two thumbs up!
Thanks for the kind words! :)
Dope
Thanks so much!
Niceness
This is great!😭 what setting were you using on your camera ?
Amazing content!
how did you wallmounted your bowens modifiers?
I’ll have a video on this soon! :)
Tnx
Okay question, how did you go from the background being in the frame during the photoshoots pics to turning that into an expanded all white background on the final result?
Retouching
What was your aperture set at?
I think F/11
@@lindsayadlerphoto Thank you!
Can you share what backdrop stand you are using? I have a permanent setup for my studio, but would love something like this to take on the go. Thanks!
These seem like quite common, yet sturdy, light stands. I personally have half a dozen Manfrotto 1004BAC that go up to 12'. As they are aluminum, they are very light, but less sturdy than a Mathews C-stand. With backdrops, they're fine. I use a vanilla brand "crossbar" to hold a roll of paper or hang cloth off (4 meters wide , so a 12' roll easily fits as 12' is 3.66m). It seems to me my 1004BAC can go higher than these in the video.
In this video's studio space, if that were a permanent studio, I would replace the tripod light stands by "autopoles" that can be clamped between floor and ceiling (provided floor and ceiling are not historical works of art). The advantage of autopoles is that they don't have feet that people can trip over. My 1004BAC fold their legs flat next to each other and I can click-stack them in a row, so they don't fall over when "parked" in the studio nor roll around in the boot of the car. If you need a boom arm with a light on it that weighs more than a bit, forget these aluminum stands, though, and go heavier metal - this is not about the weight the stand can carry but the torsional load it can handle before it bends.
I'm using the Manfrotto Autopoles!
oh instead of an Canon R what about a Canon D30 with a 3 point focal deal : does it make the world flat or the face ? those cameras help i mean really helps a student with no high tech knowledge of cams_ lets adventure with the uninformed Lindsey I love you ___a great teacher
you are basicly my favorit photographer hands down. I love to shoot at 17 mm same applies here..>>"people" check out my work on insta at @dhieberphotos , not as good as her's but not bad & different i guess...never copy but get inspired !!! open for sugestions in any case!! her instagram is just madnesss .. love!
Would you recommend a 12mm or 15mm fisheye lens?
I've only used the one in this video! Sorry I dont have experience with others.
you mean zoom OUT to 15mm ;)
smh ok
Great idea but outside is so much better than in a studio. Why using high heels while working???
Because I wear what I want? lol
have more varying sizes of models pls lmao get with the times bruh
