It would’ve fallen apart, i don’t understand why VH fans have this delusion that if the ‘96 roth reunion happened it would’ve been big. Van Halen should have never done the 1996 MTV Music Awards show with David Lee Roth if they were not officially getting the original band back together again. I was 16 years old when the MTV Music Awards show happened, and I was extremely happy to see Van Halen back together again with David Lee Roth. I was so extremely excited that I did not even notice any tension between Dave and Eddie at all. My heart was crushed when I found out that David Lee Roth was only brought back in for only two songs for the new greatest hits album. 1996 and 1997 could have been phenomenal years with both reunions of the original Kiss band and the original Van Halen band. It took another ten years for David Lee Roth to officially be back in Van Halen, but Michael Anthony was no longer in the band which was a bummer. I am just happy that David Lee Roth was the last lead singer for Van Halen because I was never the biggest Van Hagar fan aside from only liking two songs Dreams and Humans Being.

I've always liked David and Sammy . Both guys are amazing. David is a killer frontman and entertainer and Sammy is a great musician. Sammy sings about love and Dave ain't talking about love. Two of the greats.
I like Dave's reason for not singing Sammy's songs. Very long-winded; he should've just said "I can't, because they're too high, Howard." I love Dave-era VH the most, but Sammy is a much better singer. Then again, DLR writes better lyrics, and has more personality.
I saw Van Halen 8 or 9 times in Concert 3 times with Sammy and the rest with David Lee Roth. Dave is Awesome to see up there on Stage with the guys after all these years but at the same time his Voice just does Not hit those High Note he used to back in the 80's. I was really looking forward to hearing those famous Screams he used to do like on Running With The Devil but didn't happen once in Concert. Makes me wonder if Dave actually went through the Training to get his Voice back in to Singing shape to the extent that he could sound like he did back in the day would he be able to hit those High Notes once again if he really wanted to ?
Dave is so quick with the jokes. Ratboy Ralph was so quick to tell on Tommy boy the manager of that show. Van Halen should have did the tour with Roth right then. So frustrating-they were THIS close to getting back together when they still had some gas in the tank. I saw them on all three tours during the DLR/WVH era, and it was fun for what it was, but I wish they'd ironed things out back in '96. Dave just let his worse instincts flare up for one or two significant moments on MTV, and that was that. Frustrating.

The reason Roth still has fanboys is because at the end of the day, the catolog with Roth is among the best songs ever committed to record by an American rock band...beach boys level....hagar's catolog with the band is excellent, but not near the classic level of the first 6 albums. I saw Roth live during the dkt tour and it was not good. When I want to see Roth as a good singer I look at the 81 tour videos and am quickly reminded of how great he was in his prime

David Lee Roth, regardless of what you may think of his singing voice quality, was a first class rock star in his prime. No one ever played the part better. Sammy Hagar, no matter how good he sings, is like the really cool guy selling t-shirts in the stadium parking lot by comparison.
