Somehow I think that "Maxxing the 7X7" probably isn't a brilliant term to use in upgrading/rating a new type of aircraft. What with the 737 MAX issues and all that.

I think part of the reason we didn’t see a 797 or direct new replacement for the 757 was because Boeing was so entrenched with the 787.
I remember being on what was then called the “World Design Team” back in 2000 / 2001 as a student at Embry Riddle. Basically all it was were focus groups that helped Boeing refine the design, features, & specs of the new plane; which at that time was still called the 7E7.
Boeing didn’t have the resources to develop 2 aircraft from scratch when the 7E7 (later to become 787) was not only new but utilizing composites as opposed to traditional aluminum.
I would agree that Boeing doubled down on the 737. Their outlook was that they were going to beat Airbus into the next gen composite airliner market (which they did) because at that time the A380 (then dubbed A3XX) was in development.
There was no way Boeing was going to press ahead with the 7E7 AND design a 757 replacement all at the same time.

It's too old to max. I think they did a research and max-ing it would basically require a new aircraft. The length and narrowness of the cabin means slow turn around times. The wing is specially designed for high lift and the specific engines so replacing them would mean a redesigned wing. So in the end it was better to just maintain it then max it. Hope this helps.

    • @G-546

They shouldn’t have Maxed the 737 or 757. The 757 has been out of production for years so the advantage of manufacturing goes out the window, and the plane didn’t sell the best. The 737max is basically a 2 engine 707-120 with new wings and better materials. The point is is that they are taking an old design beyond its limits. They should have just built the 797. The 797 should have been a single isle jet but with a wider fuselage to reduce boarding time. The jets smallest variant would be a 737-800 sized plane with its largest variant being larger than the 757-200 but smaller than the 757-300. They should have had a variant in the middle a little smaller than the a321 but a little larger than the 737-900.

I became a Captain on the B757 on April 2001. Loved flying the a/c. It was brilliant and runway performance was never an issue. Great landing performance too with a VRef of 132KT at MLM (90000KG) with 8 brakes. Typical 233 pax ZFW was about 79000KG, so Landing weight was usually around 83000KG. The RR211-535E4 had masses of power and the CAT IIIB Autoland down to 75m RVR with No DH was awesome. The AFDS (Autopilot Flight Director System) with triple IRS, triple Autopilot and triple Flight Director was a joy. We had the a/c in all Economy 233 seats and used to operate from the UK to the USA, Canada, all Europe as well as the Middle and Far East. A W E S O M E! As I recall, you could have pretty much max ZFW (83500KG) plus max Fuel (31400KG Fuel). Not a feat many a/c could achieve. As I recall, an average en-route tailwind component of about 43 KT meant it could do Orlando Florida to London non-stop with 233 pax. With its wonderful power and performance,take-off at MTOM of 115000+KG was ok even up to around 34 deg C on a decent runway. There were times when we could have taken off from some shortish runways in the Greek Islands surrounded by terrain with 233 pax and a tailwind when other types could not get away at all with a full Economy Config load. We even had to take much of their baggage load as well as our own so they could depart without a tech-stop. We were rightly instructed by our Director of Flight Operations to only carry the bags for non B757 Company a/c as helping other operators who had not invested in the 757 was giving them an unfair advantage. I’ll never forget the mighty 757 - a thing of beauty and supreme performance capability. Ot looked right and it flew right! It was extremely reliable and it was great knowing it had all that 535-E4 POWER! Sooo lucky and blessed to have operated it.🙏

I flew the 757 out of Denver for 2-1/2 years, mainly on trips to Hawaii (Lihue on Kauai, Maui, and Kona on the Big Island). I've also flown the A319/320 series - with over 6,500 hours on the type. I'm back flying the A319/320 series as a result of everything Covid related. The 757 is what I like to call "old school" technology. Nothing fancy, but it's very much a pilot's machine. The 757 has such an amazing capability for what it does that it's going to be very hard to replace. We could take a full load of passengers on a hot summer's day from Denver to Lihue (the furthest Hawaii destination) without any performance issues. Conversely, loading up a full 757 and departing from Lihue's relatively short 6,500' runways (back to Denver) wasn't an issue either. While I also enjoy the Airbus, I am a bit skeptical as to whether the A321XLR will be able to actually replace the 757 on the same routes. I've seen the engineering and the marketing numbers for the A321XLR, and they certainly look impressive. HOWEVER, the 757 is a well proven machine, the A321XLR is not. Don't get me wrong here, I am a fan of the A320 series overall. Nothing would please me more than being able to fly with the overall comfort of the A321XLR to Hawaii - but as they say, seeing is believing.

Excellent summation. I too flew it and the Bus. I also flew the B737. Management has been sold a phony bill of goods. Namely that a stretch B737 with a similar number of seats is essentially the same plane. Nothing can be further from the truth. When you look at a 757, what stands out? Double bogey main gear. That means TWICE the braking capability. Add to that powerful engines and a different wing and you have a plane capable of MUCH MORE. It can get into the air on hot days, off of short runways at high elevation airports. Every day of the week. And it can land on short runways at heavy gross weights. Or, go around at those same airports and have the required performance.
Yes, it's the same fuselage. But it's a more capable airplane than any of the old 737s, up to the 800s.
John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California. Land on speed and make the high-speed turnoff with minimal effort. Try that with a super-guppy. Then load it up to the gills on a hot day and head for Chicago. No problem.
The problem with the 757 and the 737 is the fuselage diameter. They are both the same as the original 707. When was that designed? How much did people weigh then? How much now? The A320 family has a significantly wider fuselage and even it is tight. People are much heavier, especially Americans. A larger diameter fuselage is what's needed. Start with a clean sheet of paper. Modern engines and systems.

I can see the A321XLR having similar legs to the 757 but it will be very hard to match the takeoff performance the 75 offers. Here's to hoping the XLR and NMA are just as beloved as the old 75.

We operate into Mexico City with the 757 and take 65-70 thousand pounds of payload out, piece of cake. I've heard friends say the A321 is way underpowered plus there is no way it can lift that much payload from any airport.

I got a friend/old ramp colleague who was an aircraft mechanic for Delta and the 757 was 1 of his favorite birds. Only people on board were just three of us, the cabin crew and pilots. The pre flight safety briefing was extremely hilarious and the cabin crew treated us like we were something special. Soft landing gear too. The added bonus was we got to fly the 76 as well. The 767-200 handled like a dump truck with front end problems, but Delta retired them pretty quickly. Only on few routes did we ever cube out (completely load to capacity) its bellies, usually on routes to Miami & the Caribbean. Pushing & towing with a tug was also a very easy do to the height of the aircraft and the great visibility you had ahead. We had the RR engine models and yes they were loud as hell but that's music to us out there. The only thing I hated (most of us did) was watering it (filling the potable water tank), you were very high up on a jet conveyer (belt loader) to reach it and guaranteed a good soaking almost every time. Not an issue down in Florida or the Caribbean, terrible up north in the cold. Great aircraft, sorely missed.

I talked to a retired airline pilot. He primarily flew the 737, A340, 757 and A320. He told me that the 757 was the sports car of airliners. The power plants on the 757 were technically too much for the jet. A 757 would haul was compared to the A340. He said if they put 4 of the same power plants on the A340, the A340 would be a badass aircraft. If 2 could do what they do for the 757, 4 on a A340 would be.a rocketship!

Back in '89, we flew a DL 757 ATL-JAX. Stormy afternoon, maybe he couldnt get lined up, or maybe there were wind shear warnings. I heard the engines spool up to for a go around, the 757 put our backs right into the seats, and hauled ass. I said "did that just happen?" That's when I realized the 757 was a tremendous performer.

The 757 is my favorite commercial airliner for all the reasons you mentioned in this video. A testament to it's greatness is that the airlines that still fly them, primarily United and Delta in the U.S., keep flying these planes that are 30+ years old. It begs the question: is there an absolute limit to how long they can fly the 757? Is there a maximum number of cycles? Can they be flown indefinitely with adequate inspection and maintenance? And why don't they at least upgrade the avionics to the more modern systems - too expensive? When will the last 757 fly in commercial passenger service?

  • @colinw7205

I have always maintained that the 757-200, aka VC-32 in USAF parlance, is basically a two engine version of the 707-120 with STOL capabilities . Which is why the USAF replaced their all of their VIP 707 transports, the VC-137, with the exception of course the ones that were used for Air Force One which were famously replaced by the 747-200, with the 757.
The market niche and justification for 757 didn't fully materialized until after Boeing ended production in 2004 with the international acceptance of 120 min ETOPS . Especially for long and thin trans-Atlantic routes/missions. Such as Chicago-O'Hare-Manchester, England (ORD-MAN). But I am not surprised that Boeing was in a hurry to terminate the 757 Program and to bulk up the smaller regional design 737 to take over the 757's missions. A Boeing exec famously said they were selling (the 757) too much plane for the money they were getting for it.

You failed to mention that part of the driver to keep pushing the 737 is the existing repair and training infrastructure available for the plane. Operators don't have to train pilots and mechanics on a brand new airframe, but can rather just "update" them on the new variant. This is a significant cost savings for an operator and makes them more interested in buying more 737s. Not saying it's right or wrong, but just that boeing is responding to market forces as much as they are driving the market for 737s.

they should have done a 757 NG (next gen) option starting in 2000 for airlines to consider. They should, if they dont want to lose massive market share for the long and skinny point to point consider doing a 757 NEO in the next year or two. The positives of doing so are numerous. especially considering that most if not all airlines have kept their 57s in service for more than 15 years after they said they wanted to retire the type. secondly, the majority of the tooling for the type and the wide body 67 are actually still around. In fact for the 67 the production line and supply routes are still operating (they still make the 767-f and are currently (trying) to make a tanker for the airforce). So there is market demand, the new engine option and updated avionics would make it as fuel efficient or near enough to be a non factor as the 37 max, and they can quickly start production of the new generation thanks to the lines and tooling they already have.

In a Beetle with the chrome bumpers and bowl hubcaps, huge steering wheel and •that• horn.

Actually it was Amercian Airlines that demanded what Is the 737 Max. Boeing was looking at a new single aisle, but American wanted an increase in efficency with same type rating.
Boeing should have said no and proceeded with the new plane which would have been more like a 757 than a 737.
Boeing CEO announced they are going forward with the NMA and added their would be 3 variants with the smallest at 200 seats which clearly would replace the 737-Max 10 in capacity, but provide the 11-12 hour range and be a twin aisle which is not only more comfortable than a single aisle but gives cargo capacity and handling.
Covid has taught airlines the reality that cargo provides revenue diversification and to do that efficiently you need a plane that can support standard LD3 containers while still having the lift to carry the weight of cargo, passengers and fuel for a 10-12 hour flight.

However, if Boeing just thought twice that the 757, a well equipped plane with different characteristics was upgraded to the MAX, it could have been very beneficial.

The B757 was an indeed great plane and one of the safest . Boeing missed the trick by elaborating upon the ageing 737 design when it should have come in for a soft landing with the B 737-800/900s actually on order . A composite single aisle B787 style aircraft would be the way to go ensuring high density short / medium range routes (Japan) to point to point East coast to mid west (Chicago) transatlantic (250 pax) ranges .

I can understand why Boeing closed the 757 line. Everyone who wanted some had them, so no more needed to be ordered and thus the order books went dry. It made sense. However, if they had waited just 3 years, they would have gotten more orders. It was around 2007/2008 that airlines like American Airlines and Continental started routes to smaller airports in the UK and Europe. Routes that wouldn't warrant a widebody jet, but would fill a 757. Thus, the 757 renaissance started! Suddenly, there were not enough 757's round.
Alas. Boeing destroyed all the 757 tooling and close down the parts manufacture. It would be far too expensive to start it all up again and re-tool. It's too late to come up with a direct replacement :(

    • @Elementalism
      @Elementalism 3 роки тому

Yup, the post 9-11 world changed Boeing perception. About 2008 the A321 started taking off for orders. The 757 would had also consumed those orders. A MAX version of the 757 with new engines could had pushed 5000 miles and if they made an ER I bet 5500-6000 miles would had been possible.
