    Howdy Folks...I'm Cal Kellogg. I'm the face of the FHS Fishing Channel here on UA-cam. My business partner, Wes Ward shows up here once in a while, but spends most of his time behind the scenes making our world run smoothly.
    We operate an online fishing tackle store focused on innovative trout fishing products. We also operate an instructional trout fishing guide service here in Northern California.
    I've spent my entire life in the outdoors and trout fishing is one of my lifelong passions. Every time I go fishing my goal is to learn something new. I'm obsessed with exploring the new frontier in terms of trout gear.
    I created the Hybrid Leadcore trolling system. I've popularized using trolling flies for trout and especially for trophy trout.
    The new frontier of trout trolling and trout fishing in general is soft plastic baits. I've developed several different soft baits and vetted them in real world fishing situations in order to develop the most effective ways of rigging and fishing them.

    Appreciate the video Cal, I was out there two weeks ago on a gorgeous day, angling all my life but new to trolling.
    I managed 1 king and 3 rainbows, you’ve given me lots of ideas to hone in my approach.
    Thanks

    Spot on with the high points and drop offs. I like work my gear 1-5’ off the bottom over the creek channels and submerged islands. Even with fast trolled spoons. Keeps you on your toes and you don’t know if it will be a king, rainbow, or bass. But you find out pretty quickly. The bass stay down on the bottom and short powerful pulls. The kings and trout race up to the top and are sometimes jumping out of the water before you even notice the bite. The wild rainbows are the best to catch, they fight way stronger than the kings or the bass.

    Great video and a good reminder to fish my back yard more often!
    If you don't mind me asking a question, is that weight in front of the dodger to help it keep from spinning out at higher speeds?

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  5 місяців тому +1

      No to do that put the weight on the tail…. I like that weight up from to insure my Dodger doesn’t surface… in the boat I’ll see them if they happen to come up but in the kayak I can’t see back there…. Started doing that years ago while pulling Sling Blades

    What type of power bait do you recommend to shore fish for kings at folsom eggs or the dough?

      Well I’ve been running with 10lb Trilene Big Game line all winter…. I just rigged up a rod with 20lb braid and a 30 foot 12’lb fluorocarbon top shot for my downrigger rod

    How can you tell the difference from a baby king vs a kokanee?

    • @williamrogers4556
      @williamrogers4556 5 місяців тому

      Kokane is a landlocked coho salmon, i’m pretty sure there’s no Kokoni in Folsom, but I could be wrong. Like their ocean cousins one has the dark mouth and one does not.

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  5 місяців тому +1

      Kokanee are landlocked sockeye salmon. They do not exist in Folsom at this time… Kokanee have a much smaller mouth, finer scales and kings have black gums…. The tails and spot patterns are also very different… side by side you could see the difference very apparently….

      @FHSTackle ah thank you. I've been catching fish that look exactly like those out of Pine flat reservoir. I thought they were kokanee.

    How come you don’t keep those and eat them? Are they good to eat?

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  5 місяців тому +1

      Oh sure they are good....I've been fishing a lot and I'd prefer not to freeze the fish. In the winter the cold water makes them very releasable so I let those guys go. Nothing wrong with keeping some fish for the table!

      This are all juvenile, first year fish. It's better to let those go to grow

    KINGS ARE AN OCEAN GOING FISH. SO, AM I TO UNDERSTAND THESE KINGS WERE DUMPED INTO THE LAKE TO DIE?! THERE ARE NOT USED TO FRESH WATER, TO SPAWN AND DIE.

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  5 місяців тому +6

      They are stocked in lakes all over California. Folsom actually has a spawning population of kings…

      For sure. Consider the massive King population from the fresh waters of our Great Lakes in the Midwest.
