I don't check for balance every time.
should have been more clear. I have ran a
commercial lawn business for 14 years.
Blades get sharpened 1-2 times a month.
If you grind them even they will not be off
balance. It's very rare I see them off.
You will know when they are off balance if
you feel more vibration than normal.
Thanks for the comment. Just to be clear.
It is always good practice to balance your
blades.
Got a lotta experts in here. Do your own video then. This does fine for my HRN216.
Great video thank you for taking the time to help others.
When I worked at a golf course the owner insisted we spray off the grass debris every time we used a mower (every day). He said the grass will eat away at the metal. Ever since then I spray down my mower after each cutting. Only takes a moment.
Thanks you for the video bro before my yard 1 hours, now 20 minutes 😂😂
Good advice interesting video I clamp my blade to my workbench also i pop my welding gloves on, I fitted new filter Thank you!
I have never thought of turning it on it's side. I have always just raised it off the ground onto blocks and reached under, just like for draining oil for those older models with convenient drain plug on bottom of deck.
Top work!
vice and a hand-held file is the way to go imo, maintains an angle much better and removes less material.
Thanks for the info 🙂
There is a torque spec on those blade bolts and there are usually bellville washers on the bolts that have to be oriented properly to work.
Thank you! That was very helpful!!
Glad it was helpful!
I think maybe you over simplified this operation. That looked kinda dangerous with the angle grinder. Cleaning the blades of built up grass also a good idea. Helps when balancing the blades - which you seemed to skip. Also you didn't check the gap on the new spark plug. Dummy me had my blades on upside down. Didn't realize that until I brought it in to be serviced for a different issue. Blades move in a counter clockwise motion. I didn't know that either. On another note....Great job on the filming of the video. Good camera angle. Sorry for all the negativity. I should have read the other follow up comments first.
I have not sharpened my Honda lawnmower blades for 4 years and it cut well...until it didn't. I changed the blades. Oh man those blades were really wore out LOL.
And you make sure you don’t forget your spatula under your mover……..hahahahahaha
I like the video. What kind of sharpener you are using? Thanks in advance.
I have the same mower, how often should I change the oil filter? Thank you!
Thank you! I got the flap disc. Was just a little hard for me as a women to get the blades out. But the rest was great. Thank you for the tip!
How often do you sharpen?
Once a year should be good for regular home owner type of use.
Hi I noticed your comment mam, if working the wrench is the problem. Simple find a piece of pipe the you entend the wrench with, then working the wrench should he alot easier. Same method I use when changing tires on my car.
Remove the spark plug fully, the mower can still start. The ignition lead doesn’t have to be plugged in, only has to be touching the plug.
I think there's a better chance I get struck by lightning twice while winning the lottery than my mower starting spontaneously.
All the safety precautions in place. But you should torque your blades.
What about using a torque wrench on the blade bolts??
Any wrench will work, torque wrench makes the process faster.
is this a stainless deck ?
Had any trouble with the Honda rear wheels?
Not really other than they wear out too fast.
I know some have had an issue with the rear wheels not wanting to turn backwards while pulling mower back.
5:10...better to secure it (with a bolt through the center) to a stable surface (table).
Would it be better with the fuel tank be empty?
That would be the best, but not always possible. I don’t like draining out the gas because I don’t want to contaminate the fuel or waste fuel.
@@TheCrazyCaptain
I meant to use up all the gas.
I would have a working plan first.
But you're absolutely right. I don't want to drain the tank.
Thanks.
@@earlmorton6265 I use a wal-mart plastic bag and put it between the gas cap and tank, then tighten snug.
It won’t leak if the tank is a little bit on the full side. Always worked good for me.
any issues with the carburetor ? I have this mower and the carb got gunked up so bad it wont run after only a year . never had a carg issue with briggs & stratton. Honda has a good name but I fear some of their engines are pretty bad.
I have never had an issue with the carburetor or engines in the Honda Mowers. The only issue I have had with Hondas is the tires wearing out too fast
It is likely an issue with the gas it is getting. It could be stale and/or have too much ethanol in it. That will gum up a carb on a small engine no matter what type it is.
If you have winters and store mower. Empty gas and run mower until it stalls. Never leave the gas in and never use gas with ethanal in it. I have this same honda mower for over 5 years. It is a 1 pull start lawnmower. I guess even Honda makes lemons😜.
@@bobcaygeon4533 I agree that if you can get ethanol free gas that is the best option. The problem is that many areas don't have it available. I looked into it, and the Honda HRR216's manual says this:
"You may use regular unleaded gasoline containing no more than 10% ethanol (E10) or 5% methanol by volume. In addition, methanol must contain cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors.
Use of fuels with content of ethanol or methanol greater than shown above may cause starting and/or performance problems. It may also damage metal, rubber, and plastic parts of the fuel system."
Even that can be tough because many gas stations are running 15% ethanol, and use methanol on top of that these days. In that case about all you can do is try your luck with using a fuel stabilizer that has an ethanol treatment.
It ain't the honda giving you prob.... it's the ethanol gas. Honda is the top of the small engine game,, very high quality everything for decades. Look it up, ethanol gas that sits for 6 months or more turns to gunk and clogs all orifices in the carb. Stop saving $1 and buy real gas for anything that sits for months
Does it really pay to invest $10+ to have a shop sharpen your blades? My 42" craftsman uses 2 blades. I can buy a 10-pack of oem for $75. It may make sense to do it myself with an angle grinder, but I can't see farming it out when it is less costly to purchase new.
I agree
Very Good!... 12🐄🦉🏴☠✝
U don't check for balance? It's a $5
Part, very easy.
If it's out of balance
You will know it very fast. Grinding 3 times per side is not balancing.

How do you balance blades?
I was on board till the impact wrench on the bolts.
You need to balance your blades after sharpening the blade
I always use a good stiff putty knife to remove excess grass and dirt buildup before I sharpen the blades and then balance them before I put them back on.
Not that important, they do not have to be perfect mower blades should be balanced if you have to take a lot off them because you hit something or every fifth normal sharpen. Ride on mowers with long blades require better balance due to the effect of the distance from center makes a small weight react to the revs the blade is rotating at.

at 7:56 MOMO leaves his Putty Spatula Knife under the lawn Mower.............. which is dangerous to leave any tools under a LAWN MOWER !!!!
You don't maintain your lawn mower very well do you. The undercarriage is full of dried stuck on grass. The owners manual says to wash the mower regularly and keep it CLEAN.
This mower was used commercially in a mowing business. It was mowing over 10 yards a day for over 5 years. This was not used as a home owner.
An average home owner mows 32-40 mows a year. That was done every week on this mower.
You really keep underneath clean lol never lend anything to you
IF YOU NEED THIS TYPE OF INSTRUCTION HIRE SOMEONE TO DO YOUR LAWN
So you’re saying if you own equipment that needs basic maintenance periodically you should not learn how to do it yourself? What a dumb comment.
