@@samich2220 words have meaning. By referring to someone changing their opinion over a timespan of 20 years about something that was probably never linked to any fundamental belief as "flip-flopping", you completely destroy any meaning that word ever had.
Also as a side effect you seemingly reveal a lot about yourself since you make it sound like despite ever-changing societal and evidential contexts, adapting ones own beliefs and opinions about the world is a moral failure. The classic conservative mindset I suppose, but to me that just seems obviously wrong 🤷‍♂

@@mattpowell6291 People mistake sex and gender. You'd never talk about gender in a biology sense. And even in a biology sense cross gene recombination makes the subject more nuanced than what your typical person would give it credit for. The sex binary is really only useful to the degree that we know that if you pair a person up with a penis up with a person with a vagina, then they'll probably be able to produce another person; and that we know the chromosome sequence that'll most likely lead to a person having one or the other. That doesn't really say a lot about who that person is, but society uses it as a way to say who you are, and who you should be. When people are talking about gender they're really talking about a much larger conversation. I personally think trans people would enjoy more success if they attacked the idea of sex identity, instead of doubling down on it by trying to expand the definition.

As with so many things, gender has suffered the drop in resolution that comes with language. We keep forgetting that language itself is short-hand for describing the world around us. If it wasn't in short-hand form it'd take forever to describe anything at all. Language would become too sluggish to use. But when we forget that, we start thinking that our definitions accurately describe the world, and so we try to fit the world within those definitions. But it doesn't fit. It never has, and never will. Whether it be gender, or any other word we've ever come up with, reality is just... bigger than a word.

She said: "Any kind of love is better than any kind of hate." I know it's just a movie, but to me it spoke volumes. I'm not gay, but I do have gay friends. I also have friends of different cultures, and of different skin tones. That one line has taught me our likenesses far outweigh our differences. As far as sexual preference, or identity, well to each their own, it doesn't make you less of a human being. Those that don't agree, well that's their right not to, but they're wrong.

Woman does not refer to sex, but to gender, but the person posing the question is seeking to conflate the two. As such, the only answer they will accept is "A female" which is not *technically* correct, given the fact that it leaves out trans people.

Sex refers to one's biology. There are two sexes; male and female.
Gender refers to the characteristics typically associated with one's sex. There are two genders; masculine and feminine.
Given every human being exhibits both masculine and feminine characteristics, it is safe to assume there are as many ways to express one's gender, as there are people on the planet - making every individual beautifully and perfectly unique!
(This view is science-based classic liberalism, which celebrates the individual.)
On the other hand, the painfully confusing trend to ignore biology entirely and insist there are a bazillion genders (each one baring its own label), is based on a political calculation that relies on gaslighting, group dynamics, and public shaming, to press home its 'collectivist' agenda.
As a classic liberal, I find this 'progressive' approach to sex/gender politics exceedingly uncomfortable and counter-productive.
... and I look forward to the day when it's just o.k. to be who we are, and not what politicians, activists, celebrities, and ideologues, want us to be!

Much of this is mostly true, buy key parts of your assertions are misleading or blatantly false. There are never really binaries in nature. There are always exceptions that make these traits bimodal, not binary.
      1. There are at least three sexes, including male, female, and intersex people. The exception doesn't make the rule, but by definition sex isn't a binary.
      2. Gender are the expression of sex, there it is strongly correlated, however it isn't 1 to 1. A great example of these are that masculinity and feminity is not universal across cultures, not even across time where we have baby photos of Presidents in dresses. We also have documented evidence of cultures with third genders with some being recognized in our society. As a social construct, gender is still real, but arbitrary and malleable. You shouldn't be arguing from the POV of why are these people trying to create more genders, but instead for the moral or ethical necessity for no doing so.

It is, as Dave Chappell said, to what extent is everyone obligated to participate in everyone else’s self image? How reasonable is the actual request being made? How respectful is the request. To what level is legislation appropriate to force compliance? I know for me and a lot of fairly leftist people from conservative backgrounds this is the bigger problem. I believe in freedom, if you can’t get your way without force then you don’t get your way in a free society. I believe in respect for one another, but if you want to introduce a big shift into another culture, you should probably not do so by insult and coercion. I fucking hate the religious right who try to do the same thing from their side, so if anyone bothers to read this don’t bother with that criticism. The presence of one crazy doesn’t legitimize an opposing crazy. This is the problem with the discussion of gender: Each side is talking about two different things and both are calling them gender!
One side defines it as biological sex and the other is talking about societal norms that are placed upon a person because of their biological sex. (Aka gender norms, but for some reason they call it gender)
Until both sides can figure that out and modify the language they use in these discussions, there will never be a productive discussion on this subject.

    • @harvey66616
      @harvey66616 Рік тому +7

It's worse than that, because even biological sex is not strictly binary, since various genetic mutations can lead to indeterminate or blended biological sex.
But really, it's not that each side is talking about two different things. The fascist side understands perfectly well what the compassionate side means, but insists on basing gender roles strictly on the oversimplistic concept of strictly binary biological sexes, so that they can then reject the people who don't fit into their oversimplistic classification scheme.
All that said, the transgender community is IMHO falling into a trap of their own making, discarding decades of gender equality efforts, by accepting and even reinforcing the idea that there is one way to be a woman and one way to be a man. Far be it from me to refuse to accept someone else's statement that they "identify" as a particular gender, but I do have some unease with the implication the gender they identify with must necessarily look, act, feel, etc. a particular way. And yes, that's the implication, because if you can't associate a particular gender with a strict code of those things, then you also couldn't state your own gender identity in relation to those things.
I guess maybe this is a necessary transitional state needed so that we can come to accept that biological sex does _not_ predetermine your identity as it relates to other human beings, but I look forward to the time (maybe hundreds of years in the future, sadly) when people can just be _people_ and we can stop worrying about whether we classify them as "man" or a "woman".

I accept that there is technically a difference between gender and biology, but I think there shouldn’t be. Why should I care what imaginary box you see yourself fitting in to? If you identify as masculine or feminine or something else should not be any concern of mine unless if I express some interest in that. But using goofy pronouns makes what’s going on in your head my problem.
Also, this tends to be a very fluid thing that changes constantly. If you feel more feminine tommorow, then are you going to insist I call you by new pronouns because you don’t feel the same way as yesterday?

    • @harvey66616
      @harvey66616 Рік тому +8

@@flashlightwashcloth7283 _"this tends to be a very fluid thing that changes constantly"_ -- "tends to be"? No, I'd have to disagree with that. Most transgender people feel vastly relieved once they accept their "true" gender identity, and they do not "change constantly". Occasionally, someone will decide they were mistaken, but that's not common at all. Far from it.
And for better or worse, the pronouns are all of our problem, not just the transgender people. That we have gendered pronouns at all is an understandable, but unfortunate consequence of the evolution of human language. These pronouns unnecessarily pigeonhole people into categories that while appropriate in the large majority of cases, still tend to make those who _don't_ fit into either of those categories feel like outsiders.
I see two separate issues, both lumped into the broader "transgender" question: people who subscribe to binary genders, but who feel misgendered; and people who don't feel comfortable being identified as either gender (i.e. non-binary people). For me, the latter is more understandable. As I mentioned earlier, the former group of people, instead of following the earlier trend of just rejecting gender norms altogether -- something I personally feel would be the healthier approach -- are doubling down, by choosing one of the historically defined gender roles, on the idea that there is just one way for a man to act and one way for a woman to act. That's their prerogative I guess, but I feel like in the broader social scheme, it's a short-sighted attitude, and just makes it harder for all humans in the long run.
The non-binary individuals seem to me to have more of a point, but at the same time I wonder why it should matter so much. Most transgender people, even non-binary, do have a well-defined biological sex. It's not ideal that our language uses different pronouns for people of different sex, but to me it seems like the bigger picture is that one should be able to act in whatever way they like, regardless of biological sex. It should be no big deal to accept the socially-assigned pronoun, because society should not then make assumptions about who you are based on that pronoun.
Unfortunately, large swaths of society aren't prepared to make that shift. Maybe in a hundred years, or maybe in five hundred, we'll finally be at a place where that's true. But for now, what's a transgender person supposed to do, when all around them are humans who refuse to respect their own personal feelings?
And like it or not, you're part of that society, even if you don't agree with the current social norms. So yeah, it _is_ your problem what's going on in someone else's head, because your society hasn't become enlightened enough to avoid hurting that other person on the basis on what's going on in their head.
Using the right pronoun can be confusing, and it certainly takes more conscious effort for most of us (especially us older folks) to keep up. But given how screwed up society is generally about gender and gender roles, it really is the very _least_ we can do to try to accommodate people who find themselves with really awkward or even painful feelings about the way society has viewed their own gender.

@@harvey66616 That's a whole lot of waffle considering the framing of the argument is wrong. There are two sexes, male and female. "Gender" is just being used by trans advocates to muddy the waters and unfortunately people tend to use this terminology instead of rejecting it and framing it correctly in terms of sex.
You yourself tried to muddy the waters by bringing up aberrations like XXY but these aberrations are still either male or female, there is no "third sex" (or non-sex like the ridiculous non-binary appellation).
Given that sex is binary and that a person can't change sex what you've got is various types of people with some variant of mental condition who pretend to be the opposite sex, you've got people with actual dysphoria who should have psychiatric counselling rather than being railroaded onto puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and experimental surgery. Then you've got those who are victims of social contagion (mostly autistic females). Then you've got the transvestites and autogynophiles aka the ones that scare the shit out of women because they seem to want to trample all over womens rights and exhibit an extreme form of misogyny.
Then you've got the case of Tomboys and Femboys, girls and boys who wanted to wear different things or play with different toys or generally do things differently to most boys and girls. Instead of just letting them be, now you have trans rights activists who think that girls who wear boys clothing are actually boys and should be given hormones and surgery to change them which is abominable in my opinion.
And regarding pronouns, no one can demand how others refer to them in the third person, it's just ridiculous and speaks to a form of narcissism and controlling behaviour and should be rejected.
