      Investigating crime report maps in any given city reveals that certain neighborhoods have disproportionate amounts of crime to an exponential degree. Perhaps having the military patrol high crime neighborhoods will bring peace to those neighborhoods seeing as how the police are ineffective at keeping crime at bay.
      I've long lost patience with the failures of our nation to solve problems and approach all political angles and issues as a fixer of problems. We need clear and direct solutions, not waffling or weak handed approaches.
      Ending the era of limp wristed politics and instead focusing on direct, hard, scientific solutions to problems should be the goal. Fundamentally I blame libertarianism and the libertarian mindset for most problems in the world. Anti-vaxxers are one thing, but abolish the police is another bad idea just as bad as anti-vaxxers. All of these toxic movements are destabilizing society to the point where cracks are starting to appear because people are promulgating bad ideas to an exponential degree, which results in deteriorating conditions... Rising crime, political destabilization, economic disorder, etc.

Over time we have seen this just isn't true, but it's just how the brain works (and thus why people shouldn't have guns; I can attest to the fact that my fears and paranoias get the best of me, and I can end up doing some irrational things, and hell for all we know the op lives in an area where crime is high, so at the very least I can empathize with the impulse to buy what you think is protection). As someone who works in the DV field, thank you so much for highlighting this issue. In my state of Georgia, sadly, it is often a non-starter even with LE officers who are allies and work with DV advocates and organizations. It is so infuriating and heartbreaking at the same time. Courts also have a hard time disarming DV perpetrators who are making a living with a firearm (police officers, military, private security), for fear they will not be able to "make a living."

      Working in the DV field must be taxing mentally. Speaking as a former Marine, DV, is a kiss of death, to a career. All Marines are rifleman, hence, DV disqualifies you for further duty. Off base, the Marine, faces double jeopardy. We do our best to enforce DV. Yes, the military has a higher rate then civilians. We offer counseling for both, it's up to the Marine to control him/her self. If not, consequences will follow. "Semper Fi"

      Here in Colorado even if you are charged with anything DV, your guns are taken away. Seems pretty straight forward to me. Not sure why other states cannot get onboard with that. I support the right to have guns in the hands of the right people, but people who commit violent crimes, even while only charged, should not have access to guns. Honestly after serving in the military and having grown up around guns and hunters, it perplexes me why people who do purchase guns do not have mandatory training and safety awareness. If there is one thing that should have safety over done it is gun ownership. There should be a mandatory two week training done for anyone buying a gun. That is less then the amount i had prior to even going into the military.

Also, he was quicker than me- he would likely get to my gun before me. My daughters school gave me a phone for emergencies only. They told me not to tell him. Had I NOT told him, he would have broke the phone when he found it (not if) and beat me. I had to tell him. At least though he knew it was from the school and that they were suspicious of him, so he likely wouldn’t have done anything to it. Or would have relied on me telling the school it fell in the toilet or our daughter broke it.

THIRTY TWO SECONDS between the first shot being fired and him being killed by the good guys with guns.

Law makers and judges are undermining the criminal justice system and new laws for things that are already illegal won't change anything. Also the chart they showed for a second was extremely misleading. Jon says that studies show that more guns means more deaths but that chart specifically shows gun deaths. Perfect balance of a sound, well reasoned argument about an important social issue, without spinning every systemic cultural problem into a catastrophe, and keeping on topic with relevant humor throughout the segment, rather than detouring into absurdist nonsense. Just great stuff.
    More people need to appreciate just how clear the leading indicators for violent outbursts are. Domestic Violence is a signal that the individual and family culture views violence as a normal form of social interaction, and a means to an end. And as always, theres an underlying socio-economic problem at the heart of domestic violence. "Lock them up" and "take their guns" are important measures for the end of the process flow, but the real change is made upstream, identifying why these young men and women are growing in environments that normalize violence and abuse.

    I’m so glad Jon covered this. The solution to the gun debate is one where both sides of the argument can be happy with the result. I genuinely believe we do not even need to ban guns like AKs or ARs. 24,000 of the 43,000 gun violence deaths last year were because of suicide. If we improved our healthcare system, we drastically reduce the number. Simply closing loopholes and getting guns away from domestic abusers reduces it even more. Address the severe poverty that many people of color are in, that number goes down even farther. Couple that with improving the background check system, and we could stop most of these deaths from happening and still allow people to own what they want. Not to mention the addition of an improved quality of life. It’s such a straightforward solution that it infuriates to no end how much it is ignored.

    Did you know, a lot of judges deciding dv cases (injunctions/restraining orders) think that abusers have a right to their guns despite believing abuse occurred. If you're an attorney before such judges, bring the fed rules with you to help remind the judge. It works (usually).

    • @archerj.maggott1372
      @archerj.maggott1372 3 роки тому

      That might be a possible way around the underlying problem, which is that state and local cops don't have to enforce the Gun Control Act of 1968 -- which is the federal law that says DV offenders may not buy or own guns -- because it is not written into the Constitution itself. It's thus their 10th Amendment right to refuse to enforce it. But yes, if a local judge tells them to, then that might be a different story, since they were ordered by the local court.
      Still, without state and local laws that say the same thing as the federal law, you're going to have lots of instances where local cops and/or judges don't want to take a DV offender's guns, and, since the 10th Amendment says they don't have to anyway, they may not do it, even when asked. Then, it will be voluntary for the offender to give up his guns, which is of course just another way of saying that he won't have to.
      He can likely also get a new gun through a private sale or a straw purchaser, even though if he tries to get one at a store, the NICS check will tell the dealer -- who is licensed through the ATF, and thus has federal (not local) law enforcement looking over his shoulder -- not to sell to him. Thus, the commercial dealer is the only likely barrier to the DV offender who wants to get a gun, and there are multiple ways around him.

    • @sweetsensation28
      @sweetsensation28 3 роки тому

      @@archerj.maggott1372 I can only provide an example for Florida, and the law for dv says if an dv injunction is granted against you, you cannot be in possession of your guns. Some judges like to say it's not a must but a suggestion of the max that can be ordered against the abuser, but it's not. And when you remind them that it is not just a local state law but federal, they are more inclined to follow the law in fear of being appealed.
      You still have some judges who don't care and believe the survivor doesn't have the means to pay for an appeal.
      Doesn't hurt to be prepared at all levels, especially if you want to preserve the record for appeal.
      You are right, injunctions do little to protect the abused when law enforcement will not do their part in enforcing it. A lot of victims don't even know how to use the order to protect them selves. Lots of education is lacking in this area and you need all boots on the ground involved to find the holes and solutions for the holes.

      This is not an insult to you, it seems you're able to hear the other side, but I'll never understand why we can't make states force background checks and licensing for firearms in all 50 states. Not to mention all the other loopholes like liquidating inheritance or gun shows. AND you can find all of these examples on the ATF's website. I don't get why this is such a negative thing to anyone I've ever tried to have this conversation with, perhaps you can provide insight on it for me as a pro gun guy cause I generally have run into walls and just avoid the discussion now.

      @@MasterFlarg89 there’s a lot going on in your comment, but I’ll try my best to hit it all. First the “loopholes”. The honest truth is inside gunshows anybody sells any firearms must follow all the same rules as a standard gun shop. Having also worked in that industry I can promise you it is not easy to just buy a gun. Anyone selling guns there that’s not ‘running names and numbers’ (background checks) is committing a crime. For liquidations, look to cars. If you sell me your car do I have to show you proof I know how to drive or that my license wasn’t taken due to DUIs? I would also like to make this point… guns are not nukes. I have been shot at, and had a few guns put In my face I took most of them away for myself. I have also been hit by a car and would take any gun pointing at my face over somebody trying to run me down with a car. I do think we could expand on some of the information that disqualifies one through background checks. However given the slow convoluted nature of our government it’s hard to say for sure they wouldn’t just end up keeping someone from buying something they have every right to own. And for ownership… it was made very clear through writings after the constitution was signed there was to be no distinction from civilian or government access to firearms. Mostly do to the fact the private business were had to deal with the same threats as the government itself and so did those who worked for them or had there own homesteads. (Same as the government, not ruled by). Modern case law and interpretations differ on that however. I do think some concessions could be made, but in all honesty we should have as much right and access to guns as anything else.

      As a former law enforcement officer I believe we do not need more gun laws but simply need to enforce the ones we have.

    Jon, you are the Connor to my T-infiniti. I remember the day of the Charleston shooting. Your connecting of the dots is mighty impressive. I am glad you are still calling for sanity. Counter terrorism training wouldn't be a bad idea if we could restrict those with more violent and aggressive attitudes out of being able to carry guns. First, mental health care would be a requisite, through expanded coverage applied to citizens. I do remember hearing that over-prescription of certain antidepressants is a contributor, as well. That can be stopped with improved case monitoring and preventing users of certain medications whose side-effects list 'suicidal idealization", suicidal thoughts (chantix and other like acetycholine effectors) and the run of the mill stimulants (anything with "amphetamine" in the chemical name). We all have phones, let's start using them for something positive, like stopping psychopaths.
    The current situation and the history that got U.S. here just feel backwards. Like we are unable to protect the lives of actual people who stand in the line of fire fighting for civility, the neighbors, the police, ems, and health professionals... all just so the N.R.A. and poor whites can retain their long since laughable fear of loosing the "privileged and exceptional" identity, as ignorant gun-toting land-owners they were sold along with sharecropping beside former slaves of the late 19th century. It's the pathetic and cruel shame of our modern era. Do you poor whites, regardless of income, not realize this is how they got you to sit back and shut up as they took your tax dollars for their bail-outs, which you will never be entitled to, and used them to engineer even more difficult lies, until you can't understand why you're the ones committing mass-murder anymore? Too soon? I think not. My family were pitiful, pathetic, witless, spineless, ignorant, selfish, violent, domineering, psychopathic, depressive, pill-popping, gossiping, manipulative, low-class, lying, racist, assholes, fakes and cowards too... I left so I would not become one of them. And now the world is a better place for all of U.S.

      Ooh, really convincing with that argument. I like how you started with the premise that every single gun owner is poor racist and white, ignoring that gun control has always been a tool of wealthy whites, used most often against minorities. Then you ended by applying the anecdotal trauma of your own family to 50% of the country. Incoherent, elitist babble is par for the course.
      The US is where it is because, like it or not, gun ownership is a right enshrined and protected by the constitution. We can't really be compared to any other countries for that one reason. The NRA has no bearing on the fact that firearms are woven into the fabric of this nation.
      In fact, minimum 393 million guns, with 20,000 deaths per year means that slightly less than one out of every 20,000 guns is ever used to kill, including suicides.
      Mental health. You come so close to an epiphany before crashing and burning. 60% of firearm deaths are suicide, which almost zero gun laws address. The majority of mass shootings are gang related, usually with illegal guns. Few gun laws address this. The remaining mass shootings, horrifying, gruesome and statistically rare, are almost by definition committed by individuals with severe mental illness.
      So mental health as a prerequisite for firearm ownership, noble pursuit though it is, would only affect a tiny percentage of deaths, which would likely be twisted in an attempt to significantly curb legal firearm ownership. Because those mental health laws have to be enforced by people, often people like you, who have a ridiculously narrow view of every gun owner as poor, uneducated, pathetic whites (like your family apparently)
