    The Witcher One wasn't a particularly well made game either but supporting the small studio (at the time) CD Projekt Red eventually allowed them to create one of the greatest rpg's ever made. Personally I'm choosing to support these dev's in the hope that giving them access to a larger budget and more resources will afford them the opportunity to build on what they've created here in future games.

    • @ChocolateEffigy

      It was vastly better than this and most games. It was definitely great. Obviously overshadowed by it's sequels

    • @matthewgoff9757
      @matthewgoff9757 5 років тому +60

      @@ChocolateEffigy I would politely disagree, the story was quite good but also had the benefit of a series of novels to help flesh out the game world, in terms of gameplay the original Witcher game has some of the worst controls and combat I've ever seen in an RPG, it's ui and levelling system was also a needlessly complicated mess. I still thoroughly enjoyed the game in spite of these shortcomings and I agree it was definitely overshadowed by its sequels but that was kind of my point, without people supporting the clearly inferior first game we would never have gotten those superior sequels.

    • @EntertheFray1
      @EntertheFray1 5 років тому +29

      I enjoyed witcher 3 but the combat was MUNDANELY boring. It was completely basic. I actually bought Witcher when it first came out. After playing the intro area, I uninstalled the game just purely based on how basic the combat was. Looking at this game, the combat, even with his complaints, seems 10x better than DA or W3. Witcher 3 storyline isn't the best I've ever seen either, and Geralts flat voice can get a bit grating at times, even though he had character. It sounds like I'm complaining about Witcher but I'm not, it's still a good game. But I can't understand why it gets passes for absolutely atrocious combat and hailed as one of the best games ever made, yet reviewers jump on this.
      I've yet to play it, but the only thing I can take away from this review is that the character development and world settings sucked in this game. Fair enough. But so long as people sing high heavens about Witcher despite its flaws, I'll take a chance on this game as my next single player experience.

      @@mr.froglegs It’s not God tier.
      Despite it being a god awful performance disaster, the writing is really no better than the top-tier of game’s writing today (The Last of Us, Spider-Man, The Outer Worlds, Ghost of Tsushima, etc.). Meanwhile, the gameplay is certainly worse than the top of its genre. First person shooters are better executed in COD, Battlefield, and even some Indie games. And the stealth mechanics are even worse than Assassin’s Creed’s.
      The whole may be greater than the sum of its parts, especially absent glitches and bugs. BUT the game is not god-tier. It’s a good to pretty good game. At best. It certainly isn’t Witcher 3.

      I think it's that the devs had the right idea, setting the game world in the 17 Century and mixing in realism with fantasy elements. However, it appears the problems are with the core gameplay, as well as characterisation. Fix those issues and what you have is a fantastic RPG game set in an exciting period. I reckon if the devs focused on making this a more linear game/story, it would've been more contained and overall better experience. I think that's why he hopes for a sequel.

      @kaingates 3 роки тому +2

      @@johnjones8026 my experience is the combat is atrocious. It’s not fun. But that’s the same with Skyrim, it’s passable schlock so you can get the story. The story is fun, and seems interesting. Haven’t completed the game yet so we’ll see. Before I expand in combat I’d like to preface by saying I’m not gamer expert. I can barely complete Divinity 2 on normal difficulty, XCOM I can’t even complete on easy, I’ve completed soulsborne (except Demons and Dark souls Remastered). My problem with the combat is that (I play on hard, can be different for other difficulties) that I’m incentivized to play like a little bitch. I get knocked over all the time so using anything other than magic attacks, traps and guns is just impossible. I know I can upgrade my armor to not topple as easily but why would I waste a ton of resources and skill points when I can jump around with magic attacks and be even more efficient? I’m incentivized to not be first in. And the parry system is horrible. There is no block, only a parry. I’m not against this at all. Bloodborne did parry system really well. But here it’s really bad. You either chain parry like 4 mobs in a row or you’re knocked down and there’s no way to guarantee you do parry when you’re attacked by mobs. I feel like the combat overall is a poor execution of Dragon Age: Inquisition.
      The multi choice narrative is kinda cool but it misses. On one hand you get skills to unlock different paths but the problem is that this is kinda inconsistent. You have two ways of changing dialogue (percentage check or observation level check) but these are seldom applied at the same time so one feels like kind of a waste until you really want it. The sneak aspect is a massive failure considering you can just pick up armor and then skip the entire sneaking. The crafting aspect is cut off by every merchant sells the thing you need. It’s kinda cool that you can blow up weak walls but why would you when you can just wear the right type of armor and you can skip the entire thing.
      This leads to the skill tree. Jesus I hate that skill tree. For combat it doesn’t do much except “deal more damage” and “use less mana” or “stun some enemies”. The dialogue that are super important but you get so few points you kinda resign to accepting you have to bribe every NPC at some point.
      The voice acting is horrible. Like at some point it’s laughably bad. Your first sidekick has a mission and the VA just phones the entire thing in. Don’t go into this game expecting Uncharted 4 levels, or even Nier: Automata.
      The travel system is pretty good. I like that you have a camp between worlds where you can modify your team. You can also talk with your allies in that camp and yeah. Well done all around.
      Visuals are pretty passable up until now. Nothing that made me go “oh shit. This is as pretty as FF7RE”. They get the job done and some of the more difficult monsters look awesome tho.
      I’ve experienced a lot of bugs on PS4. A couple gamebreaking, my first crash today and loads of texture issues. I’d recommend saving often, never put the game on rest mode and always save before fights and important conversations.
      All in all this is at the bottom of games you should play. Like if you have anything good you want to play then I’d play that game instead. But if you if you want to scratch the Kingdom Come: Deliverance itch it’s a nice game. If you feel the need for some Victorian era fantasy Bloodborne is way better. RPG I’d play divinity 2 instead.

      Sometimes, things that gripes on a reviewer doesn't grind another person's gears. Like the length of a game for example. Sometimes even, a negative for a reviewer is a positive for a viewer and vice versa.
      Confirmation bias, I'd say is a valid way for us viewers to analyse a review. But it is best when you watch several different reviews to get all the perspectives and see which one personally aligns with your own interests.
      Hence why I don't bother with the numbers in all reviews.
      So don't get all hissy when people comment their own opinions to agree with or counter the reviewer's.

I need my Bioware fix and, as Bioware has forgotten why people used to buy their games, Spider is stepping up and trying to fill the void they left. While Spider continues to evolve, I will support that journey. Bound by Flame, I barely remember, but I liked Technomancer- played it to the end and enjoyed it. What I'm finding after sifting through reviews and impressions, is... if you primarily enjoy ARPGs, you will probably enjoy GREEDFALL. If you play and enjoy AA (and "Euro jank") games like VAMPYR and GOTHIC, you'll probably enjoy GREEDFALL. If you are a solid AAA gamer who only dips into the RPG world with Elder Scrolls, you'll probably be disappointed with GREEDFALL. I don't mean any disrespect but it just seems like SkillUp wasn't reviewing the game for what it is... but criticizing it for what it isn't. Too high expectations? And then to hope for a sequel? No, IMHO SkillUp bought into hype and then couldn't enjoy anything except a new AA darling ascending to the "Bioware" AAA crown. Hell the fact that you're even comparing it to some of the Best RPG's ever created and saying... "Yeah, it's kinda okay, but it's not THOSE..." Is one not a reasonably fair comparison, and two, if you understand its a 2A game, not a AAA game, going it, that's damn near glowing praise. Because you're basically saying look at the 2A game with as I said les money, manpower, and resources then all these other games, and yet all I can do is compare it to these other games.

    • @roelani
      @roelani 5 років тому +3

      The only reason it's getting that comparison in the first place is because the genre feels like it's dying and we're all desperate for great new single player wRPG experiences. It's not because of size of studio or expectations. It's because the devs chose to dive into this pool which previously had only been truly explored by the big AAA studios. Smaller teams generally don't attempt this level of cinematics + third person Action RPG combat + deep RPG systems + branching narrative + complex stat checks and choice-based quests ETC. They bit off a huge freaking chunk out of an immense cake and we're all starving.
      So yes. The comparison is unfair. But that's what you get when you play this game. Hopefully the studio makes enough cash on this new IP that their next game improves on the concepts that work, and fix the ones that don't.
      It's a good first experience, just not a great one.

    I cannot explain how much I fucking love this game's aesthetic. Conquistadors, Spanish nobility, and pirates in a fantasy world with long, collared jackets and single-shot flintlock pistols abound, right alongside magic and monsters that threaten colonization efforts. It's impossible for me to convey how much I want a sequel that fleshes out this world and has a much more focused narrative. Spiders is -- as always -- trying to push beyond their AA budgets (and 20 person team) and deserves a look. Opinions are subjective. But you all seem to miss one of the main points of a review. For a full priced 60 for an AA game, is it worth it? Is this 30 hour game worth as much as Witcher 3 when it first came out? Brainpower is lacking nowadays.

    Really? Im having an amazing time with it, honestly majority of your issues seem very small or just plain wrong to me, especially if you know the history and what the game actually is, its odd it doesnt deserve a recommendation when its quite obviously a very, very good role playing game. I personally didnt have any bugs so far, except for a character with closed eyes, no issues with combat aside for occasional jankiness as I got used to it and while you might not like backtracking or asset copying its hardly a big deal, content is there, quests are well written and interesting, areas are samey of course as it is one island but beautiful and well worth exploring and what issues do you have with the pc port? It has been running nearly perfectly for me with ultra settings.
    This feels like one of those wrong expectations reviews to me, on top of which you would seemingly be one of the people to say Witcher 3 launched with many bugs even tho in my experience it was an incredibly smooth launch, so is Greedfall.
    I love your reviews and usually find myself agreeing with you and even finding out what is it that bothered me in a game when I was unsure myself, but this time I heartily disagree with you.
    Greedfall is worthy of a purchase and more than worthy of your time, not quite yet worthy of picking up Bioware's slack, but getting there, closer and closer with each title. Id recommend this on potential alone.

      As a reviewer (SkillUp), I think it would be counter productive to just rate something base on potential alone. His main criticism about a story driven title not having a compelling narrative (w/ interesting characters) seems like a pretty huge flaw. That's not something you can blame on lack of resources. I also hate when games don't have enough enemy variety to complement the pacing. Combat and skill progression should be diverse, especially in an RPG. Not tailored to one particular meta or build.
      1) Story - World & Characters (including enemies)
      2) Combat - Mechanics & Skill Progression
      These are just the standards of a good RPG. From my point of view, if Spiders can't nail this stuff down on their smaller scaled titles (like M.A.R.S. and Technomancer), I wouldn't expect them to get it right on their bigger projects.

      @@doitlive9214 True, but he can add caviats to a recommendation, as he has done in the past.
      And yea, those are truly the most important aspects of a game, I totally agree, however from my experience so far, he is wrong. The story reminds me of Gothic of old, its not an epic tale, a race to save the world from begining to end, but that doesnt make it not intriguing or good, in fact, the story and many of the side quests are played do intrigue me, make sense and promote the enviroments and the specific organizations.
      The characters are not on par with Biowares when it comes to depth, that much is true, but to say they arnt interesting or compelling would also be wrong in my eyes, you just do not get a dropdown menu with dozen options as soon as you meet them to get to know them, they do have character and you will get to know them however.
      I just find it genuinely harsh to not recommend a game like this to an rpg fan, wouldnt recommend it to any fan of course, but if people were fine with writing and characters in AC Odyssey and hailed it as a somewhat Bioware like game, this should get its chance as well.

    First of all: Thank you for the review and all the work that went into it. I've waited, till I finished the game myself, to view this video, in case of unintentional spoilers. @SkillUp To be perfectly clear: I like most of the stuff you put out there and think you have a really good understanding of the video game industry and its products. That being said, I do not agree with your conclusion on this game, which is why I post this "small" comment as to hopefully give whoever wants to read it another point of view to consider before condemning this game, as it CAN be (not is) a fantastic experience.
    Yes, many of the problems you pointed out are certainly there, like facial animations, hiccups in combat and enemy variety. But on the other hand, stuff like story, companions and even the length of the game have felt very satisfactory, even great to me (yes, I know that all this sounds just like my subjective opinion, but hear me out). I loved the old Bioware Games and even the never ones like Inquisition and Andromeda (not Anthem though, f**k Anthem). I really hope there will be more games like those in the future and I think Greedfall is one of them, IF you are
    A) someone like me, interested in extensive and deep role playing games and willing/able to overlook "smaller" faults ("small", depending on whats important to you) and
    B) play it the right way (not necessarily the way intended by the developers). The way I had so much fun while playing Greedfall, was on the one hand certainly because it has been a while since we had such an RPG at our hands, but the main reason has been HOW I played it. If you are looking for something like a delicious diversified 5 star menu, where you just have to sit down and enjoy your meal, then yeah, what Skill Up says in this video is absolutely correct.
    If you treat Greefall rather as something like a book though, where things like story, world and characters are delivered to you, but your imagination has to create something out of that in your head, then Greedfall can be amazing. Things like holes in the game, where it gets repetitive, or the rather unattractive facial animations can be compensate by ones own imagination. I know this is something many people wouldn't want to do when they buy a video game and that's ok. Because why make a game then, when you could write a book? Why do pay for this and then having to do part of the developers work for them by imagining an even richer world and deeper characters than those in the game? That being said, I don't use this argument lightly. One could argue that we could do this for every bad game. "JuST iMAginE AlL THe misSiNg StuFF." But I don't think that's the right way. Rather there are some titles from time to time, that because of an amazing worldbuilding or awesome characters or fantastic story, are worth leaning into by putting in a little work of our own.
    Keeping this in mind, Greedfall to me is exactly that. It feels like the interpretation a fascinating book, where the developers tried to portrait its contents as an interactive 3D experience, where we, the player, can affect the outcome of the story. And keeping in mind that we are talking about a team of 30 people here, I think they did an amazing job.
    So, if you are someone like me and are wondering if Greedfall might be somehting for you: Rest assured. There is plenty of fun to be had here. Nonetheless Skill Up is not wrong about many faults of this game and there are certainly things that have to be overlooked in order to have fun, which I gladly did for this small team, as I got one of the best games of the last years for me in return. As a conclusion I'd like to go along with Skill Up in that I really really REALLY hope, that there will be a sequel to this game. I hope this short review helps some of you and thanks again for the video :)

      I have no idea how someone can "imagine the missing parts" in a game. People often say this for bad movies and at least then you can read some mediocre fan fiction or extended content that's semi official. But with a game how can you simply "imagine" what's not there? How can fighting the same boss 4 times be exaggerated to something better in your head?

    • @rileytrevelyan6613
      @rileytrevelyan6613 4 роки тому +1

      @@evanhenderson9461 I think you could compare it to fan fiction. The difference being I didn't write any of it down while playing or after. It's just stuff I interpreted in the world, the characters and the relationships that weren't explicitly shown or told but "could" be there. A bit like scify, where authors use the grey areas in our understanding of physics to imagine something like travelling faster than the speed of light or wormholes. I found the world they were painting fascinating, yet sadly a bit empty from time to time. Like stuff and people were missing and barely any NPC was turely interacting with the world, most of them just standing around. It was more fun imagining a wild buzzing island: hunters in the forest, caravans travelling from town to town, native abushes and so on. All that was talked about but we never really got to see any. Every are was always in a standstill. Also more interaction with your party. Sure, you can talk to them from time to time, but they always use the same voice lines and romances felt especially hollow. For this I like Dragon Age Inquisition far better, where you could still flirt with your paramour, even after having finished their romance side plot. Of course most of this is due to the budget and team being rather small, but the underlying worldbuilding was amazing. I truely wish for a second part with more content and depth. Sadly for this one players have to depend on their own ficition if they want more depth than there is.

    This game is incredible. The problem is the scope of peoples expectations. This is easily Spiders greatest title, yes there is tons of copy and paste work and clunky camera and combat. But when you realize the size of the dev team and the fact that this is a story driven game, all the unimportant flaws go out the window. This game makes you feel like a diplomat in a way you never thought you wanted. They delivered a $50 game that is incredibly intriguing and making me excited for a 2nd playthrough. There are no catches, micros, or Triple A studio excuses. They put out a full game with new rpg mechanics and to not play this game or support this company is a mistake.

    I personally believe everyone's expectations with Greedfall were way too high. This is not a AAA developer, this is a middle market french developer trying their best with great ideas despite a low budget.
    If you look at Spiders games one by one, and if you've been playing them all like i have, you'll see this is a huge improvement on the ones that came before despite the obvious growing pains of finally making a full blown "open world" RPG. I'm loving it so far because i went into Greedfall expecting a better effort from Spiders and in that way they absolutely succeeded.
    As for the lip syncing Mass Effect Andromeda got crucified for the overall poor animation quality with the faces, lips, overall movement being bad as well as seriously poor dialogue at times. Like that time the two krogans got into a fight and it looked like a couple of action figures slapping each other. Not JUST the lip syncing and that was a full price AAA developed game so of course consumers expect better.
    This is a BUDGET game made by a BUDGET developer and the lower price reflects that.
    That being said Skills points are absolute fair, especially in regard to the repetition and bugs (Spiders games are full of bugs on launch) , but it's just not fair to go into Greedfall expecting the "new Dragon Age" or " new Elder Scrolls". If THAT'S what you expected you were only setting yourself up for disappointment.

      i think he meant the other way around, he wanted the story to be more compact. as in, instead of 3 diferent cities, make it a single, but more diverse one, instead of 20 or so fields looking the same, add more variety, it doesnt need to go from a volcano to a frigid snowy plain, but more variety in the feel of the enviroment( more caves, rivers, lakes, things like that to make it feel more expansive). and finally the enemy variety.
      i mentioned this in a diferent post, all this could be aliviated if it focused less on trying to be realistic. as in, the graphics, had they gone with something more cartoony, or even something like a stylized HQ ps2 game, they would be able to add much more to their game.

    I like it, but the constant back and forth became more and more annoying, the areas of the game are more or less the same.
    The devs did a great game with the money they had but you can feel the constrains. As I played it long after release, I didn't experience any bugs.

      Because big maps are mandatory since Skyrim, it's a cheap way to make a game longer. But most games don't bother actually putting interesting stuff in the world, it's big for the sake of being big. Here they even prevent you from exploring that because they had nothing to put there.

      What makes the Witcher 1 unique is that it tells a better story than most AAA games. Even with its flaws, the story made the first WItcher special to me. Also, it was 2007. Video games have changed a lot since. For 2007, Witcher 1 was very good. Hasn't aged well though. You can't really compare it to Greedfall. This isn't Spiders' first game either.

They were so close to making something good, but they just missed the mark". So I think Skillup is trying to say the same when referring to a sequel. One thing I appreciate is the freshness Spiders bring to the industry with their stories and how they make multiple game worlds instead of sequel after sequel of the same game.

  • @arenkai

    I find it distracting to have a minimap in an openworld RPG like The Witcher or Horizon, so I played both with only a compass (modded for TW3) that told me the general direction of objectives when I felt like it.
    This lets me explore the world without taking my eyes away from the scenery. Too much time is spent looking at arrows, maps and minimaps in those games, it's a shame.
    HOWEVER ! GreedFall isn't an open world RPG, in this game the Minimap makes more sense since you can just say "well if it's not there I just take another route and get to my objective from the side", you actually have to follow a set path to reach areas of the map.
    That's why I used the minimap in TW3 only when I was looking for specific NPCs in towns where the layout mimics a corridor-based RPG.

    • @Fernisvale
      @Fernisvale 5 років тому +1

      You'd know if you used the mini maps, and especially since you use the compass, you only glance down to see if you're on the right path. We aren't staring intensely at the map to find the next objective, just to get a bearing on where we're supposed to go. You can still take in the scenery while galloping down a road.

      I've been using minimaps for as long as I can remember, and it's only since I've stopped using them recently (say a year or two ago) that I truly started savoring the virtual worlds.
      You talk about galloping, when my playstyle is more "slowly trotting or walking" to my destination, only using fast travel to a point when I have visited everything between point A and point B.
      But you are right in the sense that this only caters to my personal playstyle and how I like to interact with a world :)

    To be fair, you do say it's still a good game. I think this is what we should be focusing on, not whether you should recommend or not - if the game is okay, that's a buy.
