Although North Halsted is very posh and boujie, they do get some armed robberies and carjackings during the day. You should always be self aware. I do love this city. Some of the best things about it are the food, sports, and architecture. Appreciate Nostalgia Tours Radio and the drive Chris!👍
I spent a lot of time in tanker hauling career on Halsted (IL-1). 1:31:21 I used to drop off intermodal tank trailers at Canadian National's Harvey Yard in via 176th Street. Dixie Rd is worse if you want to see blight in Harvey lol. 1:32:40 I also used to deliver product to Ink Manufacturer in Homewood on the other side of I-294. I used to take lunch at the shopping plaza nearby. Thanks for bringing back memories of my time on the road tanker hauling.
Born and raised in Chicago, from the east side, to the south side, the hundreds, Cal city, to southwest. Now in Plainfield. This brought back memories. Chicago has gone down but I like “my kinda town”.
When I lived in Chicago I enjoyed taking random buses (as a student I could ride them for free) and just looking through windows at neighborhoods where people live their lives. Now I am in New York and I do that too sometimes, but with the density and pace of living it doesn't feel as satisfying. Your video definitely brought me back some sweet memories!
OMG Chris I grew up in Chicagoland in the 50s to mid 60s and you so captured the feel and experience of the area...what an artist you are!!! Showing both forwards and sideways window views with music on reminds me of my childhood peering out of a moving car in the area. Thanks for rekindling the meomories. Craig
Just finished watching this over the course of a few days (kids keep me busy!) and just wanted to say I loved it! Happy new subscriber. Keep up the good work!
Lmao you crack me up bro, I absolutely love your videos, you are the best in your genre of content and nobody is even close, your production is great, commentary is hilarious, this is the first non Detroit video I have seen, and now I will be up all night watching the rest of your videos 😂🤣 keep up the great work! I haven’t seen but you should do flint and Saginaw too!
I was visiting family back in the early 2000s and once made the mistake of cruising the area and went to Halsted and 95th at night alone. Time to get going when you hear gunshots.
This was a most enjoyable two hour run. In fact, it was so enjoyable, I ran it again a second time. Your musical selections were excellent. I picked up a few hints here of a few ones I'd like to give a further listen to again. I can't pass up the irony of where you put some of these musical selections. For example, approaching the currently bad Englewood area, you play a piece from "Mean Streetz". As you get deeper into Englewood, you switch to another musical selection from "Evil Streetz." Englewood was my home area in the 1950s when the 63rd and Halsted St. area was extremely prosperous and safe. Now, I would only "drive through" using Google Earth, or, here with your excellent video. My old boss summed up the area beautifully. "If you are on Halsted and north of 59th street, you're probably in trouble, but if you are south of 59th, you're definitely in trouble!" ... Keep these videos coming. They are great!
Man, such a lifetime history with halstead st. My dad grew up at 63rd and halstead and 101st and halstead. I have much experience working there and even farther south, even graduated from the college near the end of halstead, which is not shown on the video unfortunately. It’s Prarie State College.
Gotta say, I'm amazed you made it through the North and West Sides with so little traffic. This city is my home and I love it, but driving through it can be hell on most days. On a more serious note, I rarely venture past Bridgeport for anything, so seeing how Halsted goes from NortHalsted/Boystown into the South Side is pretty fascinating.
Also another landmark earlier in the video is the famous IHOP. It's like Halstead and Grace streets. Like 3700 whatever North Halsted it's a famous IHOP everybody complains about it but all the drunks go there and eat in there. And it's been shut down once or twice in the past number of years for health code violations.
South of Canaryville starts to change, lots of development in Canaryville now, perhaps because Bridgeport has become pricier than past. Chinatown is clearly going and heading further West than past. Hard to believe 63rd and Halsted used to be 2nd busiest shopping area in entire city. Hope some of the redevelopment efforts start to pay off eventually.
saw the building i grew up in for the first 18 years of my life. i was living on second floor and it had a window to jump out of to enjoy late nights and early mornings. I cant believe they actually fixed the ramova
@@tomcat630 I'm confused by people saying Western is the longest "continuous" street in Chicago. Continuous as in Halsted and other longer streets have imaginary lines on a map but no physical street. Or is Western just the longest street in city limits?
I believe Western Ave. starts up on the boundary street between Evanston and Chicago. In Evanston, the street is called Asbury, if my memory serves me correctly. Anyway, Western Ave. starts there (at Howard St. ?) and runs straight through from there, to 119 th St., I believe. The street continues south of 119 th St, but it is in Blue Island, IL, not Chicago. So, Western Ave. runs continuously through Chicago, from Evanston on the north, to Blue Island on the south, making the claim that it is the longest running street through Chicago, without any name changes in that street.
At 21.41 those that remember Montgomery Ward stores are looking at the old warehouse and corporate office. 25.29 Lake Street El, had a station there at one time, used it to go to HS, 26.42 start of "Skid Row" east side in the 50s, 28.14 start of the old "Greek Town" neighborhood, started to be demolished in the late 50s for the UIC Campus, 29.21 approx. location of world-famous Jane Adam's" "Hull House" Settlement house. 27.50 Bridgeport for over 100 years a stronghold for Lithuanian Immigrants. 50.15 Englewood, number 1 or 2 most violent neighborhood, 1:34.2 Homewood-Flossmoor Washington Park Racetrack located off Halstead, site of the 1950s famous, nationally televised match race, between Nashua and Swaps, now subdivisions.
I’ve always wanted to see these long streets way down. This is a great way to see this stuff. I have been to Harvey and Homewood, but I took 294 around.
I wouldn’t turn my back in no one’s neighborhood. It doesn’t matter how clean and shiny it is. It’s not paradise. People will still hate. And please sir don’t compare neighborhoods. People that live in slums would love to do better, if given the chance.
Ran across your channel, really like your tone/personality on these. this one was interesting as I live just north of Indpls but work in chicago. I KNOW halsted goes north-south, but of course I take the expressway. was interesting to see what was along that route w/o having to actually wade through the stoplights. Im enjoying your work!
When you just started out I recognized on the right 810 West Gray Street that's a 32 story section 8 HUD building. Farther down I saw at Clark and Halsted on the left Chicago or is it's called Clark Street dog. They got good polishes and hot dogs at Clark Street dog.
Many of the Chicago streets like Halstead originate in Chicago and run south to the southern Cook/Will county line, which runs along 34th street in Steger. Some of the ones I remember are State, Torrence, Cottage Grove, and Western Ave. When we lived in Steger in the early 50s, I had the choice of attending Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights ( and Cook County ) or Crete-Monee H.S. which was in Will County. (Graduated from Bloom in 1953) My draft-board is in Joliet, which is the Will County seat. (I don't worry about the draft much anymore - served in the Marine Corps - 56-59, and besides I'm 89. I'd like to see a tour of Dayton, Ohio. Grew up there but left nearly 50 years ago. Also lived in Detroit, and always thought of Dayton as a miniature Detroit. The joke used to be that the hillbillies moving up to Detroit that had car trouble ended up in Dayton.
I used to live not far from Dayton. I know those streets pretty well I'd say. The town has seen better days... Dayton blends in well with the rest of Ohio.
I grew up in Roseland during ‘40s and ‘50s and attended Fenger High School which is a block or so East of Halsted. Elliot Ness and Sammy Esposito also attended Fenger. Dick Butkus, our high school football nemesis, attended CVS.
Interesting how the neighborhoods change as far as businesses. I'm originally from The Chi bit moved out to the south burbs. I think when you took Chicago Rd south you could have also continued south on Halsted. They intertwine in Steger right before you get to Crete. Enjoyed this and will check out some of your other vlogs...New subbie here!
Starts out near my old neighborhood! The stores are upscale but there are whats called SRO Hotels that a lot of near-homeless people live in so the income levels there are all over the place. Also lots of young adults with roommates. I loved my time living over there. But driving around there makes you want to throat punch people, lol.
Glenwood is actually pretty decent and quiet. That’s stretch of Halsted makes it look worse than it is. Lots of parts of Chicago are like that. The neighborhoods are nicer looking than the Main Streets. The problem is that a lot of these main streets lack businesses.
Halsted Street is Illinois Route 1. I included Rt. 1 during a few of my bicycle trips in the '70s. During one tour, I was invited to stop by a friend's home in Danville. I lived on the northside at the time. I picked up Rt. 1 on the far southside of the city in order to avoid the bad neighborhoods. It was a great route to Danville. I eventually returned on the same route, but, again, went around the southside as far west as Austin Ave. to avoid the bad section of the city. Then a few years later, when I returned from Florida, I picked up Rt 1 at Cave-In-Rock. Today a drive that route on my way to Wisconsin.
I miss old school j3w town on halsted street back in the 80s and early 90s.... Maxwell polishes plus shopping......ahhh yess those were the good ol days....That area was demolished and nowadays that area is a college campus
I loved this video! I lived in far NW of Chicago, Albany Park, when it was still affordable to do so on a teacher's salary. I took a job in Calumet City, very poor south suburb, and eventually moved to NW Indiana. I am a teacher and have taught in areas of poverty most of my career. The south suburbs can look sad. There is little economy, but the people are wonderful. Very down to earth and friendly. Wouldn't change it!
Just because you you are filming on UA-cam doesn’t give you a license to be condescending and an overall jerk! Maybe that kid who flipped you the bird had a good radar! Did you bother to drive through the neighborhoods and did you do research on the areas other than what you THINK (questionable) you see? You only drove down Halsted! Notice that the city of Chicago and the areas outside are under siege! You know what you are talking about before you decide to film.
Albany Park isn’t the far NW side, directionally is North and West, but those from the far NW side would not count areas like Albany Park as far NW side. Norwood Park, Edison Park, Dunning, Mont Clare, etc, are far NW side, much closer to O’Hare and miles farther West.
Jeffery Dalmer picked up his victims on Halsted Street. Halsted & North Ave had the projects Halstead & Maddison was Greek town Further South was the Ampitheater.
It was called the International Ampithetre, and was located at 42nd and Halsted. Not quite sur why the place was torn down. It had quite of history of performers and events that were held there.
Plus I ride the number 8 Halstead bus. I just remember when I moved here I rode on the number 8 Halstead from Halstead and Waveland where it turns around at Broadway. I'd write it all the way south to 79th Street. Then I got off and took the extension which is the number 8A South Halsted bus. Then I would ride that all the way out to like 127th Street or something. 119th or something. Then I got on the 352 South Halsted bus. That's the Pace bus. And I rode that out to Harvey and then I got on the 370 Pace bus which would take you farther south at least I think those are the bus numbers but I know the eight and the number 8A and the 352. But you could take a bus all the way on Halsted Street several buses. You could still do that today.
I lived in every city of chgo it's all bs? Taxes alone made me leave I now live on the cusp still do murals in our hood it's still a shit hole but chgo ppl take care of their own?! Sometimes you just gotta be smart ! Yeah freaking kids you'd be surprised what they do on a daily it's a mess there! But love my chi town!! Huh? It's insane in rent too? Sorry not sorry ,Chicago don't play!? Gotta know how to live and act there usually a good old 45 will do to be safe!? That's life in da hood!!! Bush love!!! South side!! 😮
Coming from North to South....1 fact is Chicago heights hits before you get near Crete.... And for your factual info, it is no worse out south than it is North....and Crete is really the quiet Country Suburb off of 394. You driving down a street and speaking to a few People does not give you complete knowledge of any area. Parts of Chicago Heights has history and a lot of the People still reside there and have lived there over several of Decades, not to mention you have the College right there in Chicago heights on Halsted.... True some things have deteriorated but that's because of business owners Aging, dying and retirement and their Children not interested in carrying on the business, and of course the Economy....

Had to mute the music.
Hater

Isn't this the street One Man gang kicked ass in eighties
No!! That's what he was taught, from home!!
that 7 year old boy that just flipped you off got to me saying what you going to do about it
