Circling the ankles is something I do as a warm up before going to the riding school. I do 15/20min of warm up from the neck down to the ankles and I noticed not a lot of riders - at least at my riding school -, do that. Riders, just because you're on a horse doesn't mean you can just go at it without warming up and readying your muscles and articulations to the efforts you'll make!
Your video on this is great, I know heels r supposed to be down, but because it is hard for me your exercise tip is very helpful and reminds me to work on it. In addition to the ten other things in position to work on ! Thanks for the precise tips!
Coming from a hunter/equitation background as a kid, all we ever heard was, "heels down" which translates to a jammed down heel and stiff ankle. Just being thoughtful about keeping your ankles mobile and your toes relaxed is really helpful! Another position challenge I carry as an adult rider comes from doing "Shoulders back and down" when I want to achieve that nice upright posture, instead it causes an exagerated curve in my lower back that is totally counter productive to being able to follow the horse's motion. Do you have any videos with tips to correct that problem?
this has been the biggest issues when I went back into horse riding last autumn but I feel like this may help me a bit... I just have not been able to press my heel down naturally and I been using so much force that my legs just hurt but I feel like with maybe doing this regularly it may help... I hope at least....cause I find horse riding fun... I just want to do it more correctly...
@@AllisonVidroEventing I’m pretty sure that no matter what type of riding you do your anklebone should be level with your stirrup. Otherwise your stirrup will be too short or too long and you can easily lose the stirrup.

Really helpful video. I am working on my canter now and think from watching the video that I squeeze alittle...the hinge in the toe area and keeping ankle supple relaxed and down will help thank you xx

I have a short video of myself having a lesson and I thought my ankles were moving a bit much but I did have to keep reminding the horse to keep moving and had to kick every now and then which maybe made my ankles look like they were moving a bit much but didn't look too bad after all! Thank you.

Its not really about breaking your ankle in an indecent angle, don t grip with your knees at all, relax your legs and your body, put all your weight in the heels. Adjusting the position of your stirrups helps a lot too.

This is my no. 1 problem. I do the ankle moving exercises but that's not helping so far. Can you talk more about the joint in the foot? How does it need to be bent? How do you use it?

Yeah kind of. Its not about forcing them to stay all the way down, that sounds stupid. Its pretty much about putting all of your weight in the heels, driving them down with the horses rythm and movement. Has to be a flexible and full of control motion ✨adjusting your foot position in the stirrup so the heel could flex down might help
One of my bad habits in rising trot I find I'm posting off my toes so my heel come up in the rise. I try to hinge at the knee and not use the ball of my foot...ugh.

I'm so bad with keeping my heels down. When I start trotting, my feet gets flat. How can I keep my heel down during trotting. Trainer says muscle memory. I make a habit of keeping my heels down when on the couch or heel down on our stairs. Any other advice? I'm also not kicking or squeezing hard enough to keep him going.

Nice video! My biggest problem is keeping the stirrup on the ball of my feet. Even when I do keep my heels down, my stirrups go back to my heel. I've been practicing this for years and it still happens. Any advice??🙃
The frustration im having is the difference in what's an "acceptable heel position" between the dressage and Jumper world. If my heels looked like Amelia's here my instructor would nag me to no end. I wish there was one standard across all disciplines. The dressage leg is more practical to achieve...but I'll be honest. I dont think ill ever have the dorsiflexion and flexibility in my ankle to look "good" in Hunter /Jumpers. When I kick my horse or go for a leg yield I try to use the entire leg, my calf as well as my heel. It is hard for me to keep my heel deep when I'm giving an aide. I bring my foot back to heels down position but whenever he sees me giving an aide I'm told I'm up on my toe. .....Im on the struggle bus.
I can't speak too much about the hunter world since that isn't my area of expertise, but I can say that I like to focus on the biomechanics that work for my horse's and their training. Wishing you the best :)
One of my first instructors told me to spread out my toes and the ankle will automatically drop. I thought it was a great tip.

Super helpful. I have been stretching my ankle and my right ankle is a lot tighter than my left. And it is my right stirrup that I lose!

Do you have a video on how to know what length your stirrups should be for dressage?
When you take your foot out of the stirrup, your ankle bone should be level with the stirrup.

Maybe go to the chiropractor and see if they can help had a similar issue that I got a little bit of more motion with chiropractor and message

Keep focusing on relaxing your leg and letting your weight come down through your heel! It will come!
