No doubt this was one of the classics.Brisbane Lions one of the greatest sides of the modern era,I say this as a Carlton fan well played to the Pies no disgrace here losing to such a great team and maybe a bit unlucky as well:)
Nathan Buckley was drafted by Brisbane in 1993 and did not want to play for the Bears, the man requested not to play for Brisbane, because he had ambitions to play finals football. The Bears and Buckley came to an agreement that he would play one year for us then he was free to explore his options. Which he did. He went to Collingwood. In 2001, Brisbane won their first flag. In 2002, they beat a Buckley led Collingwood, and again the following year. That ladies and gentlemen, is the definition of the word Irony.
I’m 50/50 about if it should be a night one or a day one but night would give off,ore atmosphere while daylight keeps the tradition and support going but if they do a 4 or 5 pm game I wouldn’t mind
I was in this crowd! Drove down from Brisbane with no ticket and a dream,18 yrs old. Found a ticket at the gate from a scalper and sat in the open air bleacher wooden seats up high right behind the big sticks! It was all kinds of weather that day and the best moment ever when AKA snapped the winner!
This truly was a great Grand Final and both sides should be commended for their great footy skills and hard work . Congrats to Brisbane and Bad luck Collingwood but great to see my favourite side win the 2010 Flag.
What was suspicious against Collingwood? Howe not being pinged in our goalsquare for diving on the ball? All our players being taken high? Darling being held at the end of the third with no free kick?
As I watch this (on the night before the 2023 Grand Final), I can't help but notice how much more physically violent the game was at this point in time. Those were some big hits that went unpunished back in the day. And you force through a Behind to save your skin. Also how retro does the MCG look 😮
How good is Rocca’s opening goal 😍 shivers when the umpire signals the goal, the Pies crowd starting to believe the miracle could happen. Obviously didn’t in the end, but what a moment!
Wish I was alive to see this one but I was born in 2007 at least I can still watch the replays. I’m a lions supporter and hope the make it into another grand final soon
This was the grand final that altered the Norm Smith Medal voting from at 3/4 time to full-time - Voss' last quarter and that Buckley won the medal was the catalyst.
@Bubba Sawyer Absolutely agree, but nothing changes the fact that the voters said they would have voted differently, and the system was changed for the following year onward.
After watching the lions win another flag this weekend this takes me back when i was living in England watching this game at the walkabout in Brighton with a great mob of fellow Queensland lion supporters, man we got hammered 😅
I was a 4 year old back then, even though I'm not a Magpies fan nor a Lions supporter, I remember watching this game, an awesome match that went right down the wire.
me too. But reality strikes when you compare the brisbane list of 2002 to 2023. This years team has got nothing on that epic team back then, and even then the 2002 lions team only just wont the GF. Unfortauntely, Collingwood will win the 2023 flag. I hate to say it but its going to happen
Brisbane of that era were the greatest team of all time. Collingwood were brave but class in the end shone through. Robert Walls commentary had a one sided bias towards Collingwood which was strange since he coached a large number of the Brisbane players.
ryan stewart But they haven’t have they. If I remember right Bris did have a higher salary cap but at the time couldn’t afford to spend it all. Collingwood on the other hand was paying the maximum allowable. Other words the money on the field was bugger all difference. Take into consideration that Bris lost McDonald in the first, Pike in the second, Acka on one leg, the weather conditions and the fact that Bris almost kicked them selves out of the game. And Collingwood STILL couldn’t win. Go the Lions
@ryan stewart and how many other teams in the NRL are over the cap now but the NRL is doing fuck all? Jesus Christ, the Roosters have won back to back and are known in plenty of NRL circles to be waaaaaaay over the salary cap, but the N(sw)RL are too biased towards NSW teams to be able to do anything about it. Plenty of flags may have little made up asterisks next to them in the AFL (2006 is the one most people put an asterisk next to), but an extra $250,000 which wasn't even used shouldn't sour a flag (or a three-peat at that)
I'd place Hawthorn and Geelong ahead of the 1999-2001 Bombers. Essendon dominated a very weak season (2000), and choked when they actually had decent competition (1999, 2001)
@Soussy 2000 was a transitional year for a lot of teams, so some teams were not as good as they once were (North, Eagles, Dogs), others weren't as good as they were to become (Lions, Port, St Kilda), and the rest of the league was still shit as usual. These gaps allowed some ordinary teams to massively overachieve (particularly Melbourne). Essendon were just about the only team not transitioning that year, which meant the competition that they faced was absolutely minimal
@Soussy Carlton were going blow for blow with Essendon in their round 20 match until Koutafides, Allan and Bradley went down injured. Kouta was Essendon's biggest threat, but it was clear that Essendon didn't have to worry about any competition at all once it was announced that he would miss the rest of the season. As for the competition that year supposedly crushing teams of this era, not a chance in hell. If Essendon of 2000 were overwhelmed by a basic tactic such as the superflood, then they wouldn't stand much of chance against the tactically rich and fitter teams of this era, and the other shit teams that made up the 8 that year would get absolutely annihilated against teams of this era.
Make no mistake, this is one of the great Grand Finals, unfortunately soured by the completely biased pro-Collingwood commentary throughout. I long for the days of Sandy Roberts, Peter Landy, Louie Richards, just to name a few. The current crop of Anthony Hudson, Dwayne Russel etc wouldn't hold a candle to these legends mentioned. A huge part of our great game has been compromised by sub-standard commentary.
I agree with everyone else being biased, but I don't mind Hudo. Moments like the miracle on grass, 2005 and 6 grand finals, Nick Davis' monster 4th 2005 are calls he did fantastically, they're iconic
VFL/AFL commentators from the 1960s till the 1990s are better than those from the 2000s including those like Hamish mclachlan, brian Taylor, james brayshaw, Eddie McGuire + others on FOX footy.
Who would’ve been bias toward Collingwood in this commentary box? Robert Walls (Carlton), Huddo (Geelong), Quarters (Hawthorn), Malcolm Blight (maybe Adelaide)? If anything, they were barracking for a great Grand Final! Considering the Pies were huge outsiders coming in.
Pies were huge underdogs in the one, if anything the Lions shakily got across the line. Compare the teams on paper, Collingwood had one champion compared to Brisbane’s full team of champs. Wouldn’t say it was a wobble
WTF 😂 Brisbane had more salary cap space in their flag years… Pies were paying $4+ to win so naturally they barrack for a tight contest. Rocca’s “point” in the last is controversial in itself in favour of the Lions too
The last 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter decided the game. Tarrant misses 2 shots at goal, the ball goes down the other end, and Brown kicks straight. Here's the thing - I was sitting on the top level of the great southern stand while Tarrant was lining up for goal, and I thought 'he's too close to the man on the mark'. I knew it would be touched before he even kicked it. If I knew, why the hell didn't he? I could hold him responsible for the 2011 debacle as well. It was he who pulled down Ponsiadly. I love the guy, but he f**ked up at critical times in the clubs history.
Spot on David,I was between half forward n pocket the same end n side of ground he was kicking from,I just noticed Lions players heads drop when he marked it.Let them off the hook, was never a big fan of his. Why get so close when only about 35-40 out?
The commentary in this game is unbelievably biased, especially from a former Lions coach, calling Collingwood players by their first names. let's hope we take away the cakewalk this week as well
That was the only bad call that went against Collingwood all day. Collingwood actually won the free kick count 22 to 14, with plenty of those 22 frees being howlers that led to Collingwood goals
Just for context.....it was the first close Grand Final probably since 1989. We were all waiting for it and it finally came in 2002. No thanks to Geelong in the 90s, but there wasn't a single good Grand Final game in the 1990s.
Read this article and you'll see that this game was actually wonderfully umpired www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/rocca-shot-not-a-goal-gieschen-20021001-gdun9d.html They video reviewed that kick and saw it was a point.
Facts even though I was only 1 year old back then I watched the AFL Flashbacks when I was 10 years old every morning before I got ready for School and once I saw the highlight of that goal I was going WTF how is that a behind.

Yep, but didn't have to live in that shithole
This is clearly one of the best grandfinals of the modern afl era let alone a lot of people agree that the 2006 grandfinal was even the 2010 draw
The Voss goal from 24:31 onwards never fails to send shivers up my spine
Iconic goal. And to see Scott Burns' dejected face in the background was the cherry on top
Every time for me too..
That is why Voss is better than Buckley. He was a game breaker.
@@AlonsoRules Both kicked great goals in the third term. Voss just had more help
@@AlonsoRules Are you disabled
this is the 10th time I've watched this game, one of my favourite games of all time.
There's just something about the lore of Grand Finals which will be lost if and when it moves to a night game
The AFL doesn't care, as long as they get more money out of it
A night granny would be better
I’m 50/50 about if it should be a night one or a day one but night would give off,ore atmosphere while daylight keeps the tradition and support going but if they do a 4 or 5 pm game I wouldn’t mind

Shut up
man would of been so great to be there, for Voss's goal and AKA's. I was a 12 year old on the Sunny Coast watching this. what a Grand Final Win!!!
This truly was a great Grand Final and both sides should be commended for their great footy skills and hard work . Congrats to Brisbane and Bad luck Collingwood but great to see my favourite side win the 2010 Flag.
On this day in 2002, Melbourne sold out of UDLs before 11am.
Brilliant!!
18 years on and this still hurts same as the Grand Final from ‘18
The grand final from 18 was quite suspicious. Bad umpiring against Collingwood across the board. This is coming from a hawthorn fan.
What was suspicious against Collingwood? Howe not being pinged in our goalsquare for diving on the ball? All our players being taken high? Darling being held at the end of the third with no free kick?
Gonna be interesting seeing the rematch of this rivalry next weekend..
I love that goal ump with the rockin mo. He had a great sense of theatre, always held back the arms for a goal by a second or so, just awsm.

The hit on Voss by Burns is legendary !!!

And in this year's Grand Final, Collingwood exacted revenge on Brisbane for the loss in '02.
Lol. Bit late to be calling it revenge.
Time for a repeat of this 🦁

Not a Brisbane fan but a great game! worth watching just for the priceless look on Eddie's face after the Akermanis snap at the end.
Never gets old that look on Eddie's face. Last year was good too.
Watching this after Buckley's last game as coach today. 32 disposals in a grand final in the wet, absolute monster of a game.
