One of the most reliable tells is when you start cutting out a bet out of position and your opponent reaches for his stack to pretend he's going to call. I follow through with a bet pretty much all the time. It's an amateur move in low stakes games. I call them "chip grabbers". (My first comment as a new subscriber. Thanks for the videos!).
The staredown and cutting chips to check are both exemplary of the maxim that recreational players act strong when they're weak and weak when they're strong. The converse is true; beware someone quietly saying "raise" while they're gently putting a big bet in, as they're subconsciously trying to induce aggression (because they just hit the nuts and want a raise that they can shove in on). Meanwhile, a flashy, noisy "RAISE!" while slamming chips into the center is usually a bluff.
The players in my home game did the completely opposite things tho.. they always tryna stare u down when they had a strong hand and not willing to look at u when they bluffing 🤣
@@hochenfei597 It's a general rule of thumb in games with unknown players. Especially if players are all in a game as regulars, it's likely that people's personae have evolved from a base -- but if you know that they act weak when bluffing, you've got a money tell. Reraise, even with air!
#4 definitely needs a small asterisk (or at least perhaps just a different example hand) since there are many many recs that just don't pay enough attention to things like back-door flushes or board-texture in general, and could easily pull this move with something like Q9 or T9. I'd argue that in practice, it's a little too player-dependent to take as a general "population" strategy. Lot of other info you need on the players to determine who to snap call and who to muck to.
Thanks. Yeah, obviously there are always exceptions. This video is a guide referring to population tendencies, but individual opponents can be act very differently.
Isn't a big turn or river raise better in the first example to fold out 9x and JJ/TT? The small sizings indicate a fear of better hands, so it should work often when we tell that story I think.
Also on the AJ hand where villain is staring you down: Why do you check the turn, do you suspect he is stronger than you thought when he calls the flop raise? Isn't this a great barrel card because you pick up the FD? Or, if your worried about getting jammed on, why not check-jam instead of check-calling? I suspect a lot of his bluffs are AQ/AK, so I don't see much merrit to check-calling, as you mostly have to hit your flush to win the pot.
Yeah that's definitely an option. I just think that you're getting such a great price that it's worth calling. But you are totally right, if you raise big there, you will probably get him to fold a lot of hands. If I had anything weaker than 88, I would favour that option.
You are right with this one. I should have check-jammed the turn, but in the moment, I thought that I was ahead of most of his holdings (which was correct) and with only one card to come I wouldn't need that much protection. But in hindsight, yes, I should have just check-jammed.
I watched this thinking about how I can use your list of live poker tells while playing online small stakes and I'm happy to see some of these are directly applicable online.
Be VERY careful folks. First of all assuming recreational players know ANYTHING about pot sizing or when to bet/fold is often giving them WAY too much credit. Conversely assuming no players are not good enough to change their game during play is dangerous. This video will NOT make you money instantly. It relies on far too many assumptions.
Thanks! Obviously, you should always be very careful. This video is a generalization and does not say that everybody plays like this. You should always observe your opponents and deviate from this if you have other reads.
Bet size = hand strength Hard staring = not a big hand Snap calls = missing top of his range Snap shoves on board changing card = missing great hands Feigning intention of making a bet but checking = weakness
@@LivePokerGuide you trust in rule "It's only hubris, if we lose", huh?) Come on. Ever seen Star trek TNG? There was a character, android Data, who had the same thinking about low bets and it's revelance to bad hands.
Stare down #2nd hand example. You said “He stared me down which meant he didn’t have much” then you checked the turn after picking up the backdoor nfd?! You should have bet a large size on the turn all things considered
@@SimpleJackPC This exploit hand example wasn’t the epiphany. It was the whole reason why he raised the villain’s flop bet in the first place. Another exploit in this hand example came from the Hero. When someone raises the flop (gets called) and checks the turn, he is also weak
Thanks. Yes, I don't disagree with this. In the moment, I considered betting the turn, but because now I had a big draw, I did not want to get blown off it in case he shoved. Also, because I had an Ace, I thought that there was a good chance that my hand was ahead at that point. These two things combined tipped me towards checking. Had I not hit anything, I would probably have bet again.
I used the chip stacking as the guy to my right was considering a raise to convey strength but i just wanted a free card. I was wondering if that was a tell and he checked to me so i got my free card and made a pair haha
Not sure I agree with #4 since I've been burned so many times on the river in those spots where guys shove because they "forgot to bet" or "didn't get it in earlier" with slow plays. #5 is absolutely GOLD though!
Thanks. Yes that has happened to me as well. It is definitely a valid point. These tips are about population tendencies, but obviously individual players can act differently. On the whole, I still think they are right though.
I have had many people stare at me, they had the cards. They did not want me to call to suck out on them, they showed their cards after i folded. Depends on the player who is staring u down,,,,
Thanks. Yeah, that is true. It has happened to me as well, but overall the acting strong tell is still fairly reliable. Obviously, you can never trust anything 100%.
Thanks man! Working on it. Just trying to see how I can do it (probably better mic). Problem is that I have very high ceilings, but I am working on it. Hopefully, I will be able to provide better audio soon.
Oh really? Which ones do you mean? I would argue the opposite. These are all subconscious tells, so people don't have to think on any level to give off these tells.
@@LivePokerGuide these are mostly (but not wholy) subcincious. You are riht. and most of the time they would work - probably. @@MrMorlaf Yes of course. If you can fake these, then yes. But I'm talking about your average recreational player, who doesn't even know about these tells.
2nd hand doesn't seem real. Why wouldnt the staring player not bet the river when finally making top pair. There's no way they would check it down. Lies.
You don't have to believe me, but also it is not nice to say that I'm a liar. This hand did happen as it did, and it makes total sense. The guy finally had some showdown value on the river, so he didn't need to bluff anymore.

The worst is when someone jams, you can tell they’re hoping you fold but you know your shitty cards probably can’t beat theirs 😂

this is true of all his suggestions tbh. Good players won't need this advice and poor players will try to apply it like a "rule" and get badly burned

Sometimes when the villain bets large on the turn, then the river pairs the board, and they snap bet large again, they often filled up on the river.
Yes, that’s exactly the danger of it. Sometimes you will run into it, but overall I think that this is still a good strategy.
