"Kali is a deadly art...without the art it is all dark" - I think that remark is profoundly insightful, Doug M. I know these arts can warp your mind if you approach them from the "wrong" angle but it was absolutely refreshing to hear that come out of your mouth - that's some perspective worth listening to and it says everything about where this man is really coming from. Well done! BTW, nice vid on other points as well. Funker rocks!

I'm born in Africa, end of talking. When buying bread, going to school, shopping for food tolerate me on daily basis with predators then I'm in the position to confess that all what you say is right. I don't know you or what's your background, I only knew myself and my thrive to survive in my country using okapi blades is the key of life. Great video.
Another great video, Funker. It's hard for most people to see the intricacies, such as exactly where they are cutting, when they are going at pace so it was nice to see you ask them to break it down for the masses. Keep up the awesome work.
Yep; slowed to 1/4 speed, I can pretty-much catch enough of what's going on to recreate the flow drill for myself and a couple of classmates (bagua, but everyone needs knife skilz).
I am more into firearms - But Dougs Kali/Blade videos are by far my favourite. I want to learn but havent found any instructors in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Maybe i will stop by the Philippine cultural association
At 6:45 he calls this a flow drill. At my attempt to sum the teaching of this video is learning to flow. How you can practice learning to "flow" is by working this drill, like friendly sparring and movement or sensitivity drills. This drill is not to mimic exactly the scenario of real knife fighting, but through this drill, you can learn aspects that translate towards that. Some of the aspects I'm talking about is sensitivity, angles, hand movement, checking the weapon hand and removing obstacles (their checking hand or alike barriers), practicing entries and exits. If there is footwork, this drill is like honing your hand work. The more you practice a drill like this, you can become more fluid than stiff and rigid. Note that you do not need much power to cut someone, unlike blunt force with a stick or baseball bat. With that said, there will be lots of movement, especially with using the body to produce power into a strike with a blunt object than a knife, which would take a easy swipe of the blade. So if my summary wasn't short enough, learn to flow by doing sensitivity drills ie attacking while your partner receives and counters and vice versa, and understand that by increasing your ability to flow and your sensitivity in picking up your attacker's movements, it can make a difference in how you handle a real threat. Be safe and God bless.
Thank you for the crystal clear lesson I have done many martial arts but i grew to have a true interest for Kali and silat and if you pay close attention to his videos you should have no problem training
i gotta say i am extremely impressed and inspired by you. Im in the process of buying a karambit. Im an eight year student of brazilian jiu jitsu, and i realize and respect the threat an edged weapon presents to myself and others. I plan to begin training immediately.
That is much threat I learned in Stockton in the early 1970s. The schools were all backyard and it was very family centric. It was not really taught with the idea of making a fortune from it. More or less to pass it on. The big difference these days is liability. If you trained the way we did years ago you would be sued I suspect at some point. We trained really hard with out gloves and later live blades.
Very good video on the explanations on everything shown. I'm a student of a different style of Kali/Arnis/Eskrima and the explanations on the drills really help me better understand the reasons behind the drills. Very interesting.

Wyrd. Guro Marcaida speaks of the 'sixth sense". This can be cultivated but it takes a lot of discipline. Some people have it naturally. Your biggest enemy is over-confidence. Believe it or not, you can develop this sense by spending time in minimalist settings of nature. When you think you are alone, you aren't. It does not matter where, desert, mountain, deep south forest, amazon jungle, and most importantly city streets. Enter a building and assess that area. Marcaida speaks of habitually doing this. It is not a state of paranoia, that is not what you want to cultivate. You just want to use more of your body to 'see'. Your elbows have super sensitivity, many , many people are unaware of the sensitivity of their hair. Your ears, the back of your neck. Your body knows more than you, if you learn to listen. If you choose to always think like a warrior and alwasy have conflict in mind..it will come to you. If you choose peace in your heart and choose love, you will gravitate towards this. I am not saying you will be without danger, but as you project outward, this is what you attract. Those of you who want to call me a hippy are good example of those who are closed up. Those of you who can be open minded about what I am saying already have the 'sense'. Great video from Marcaida, I always learn when I pay attention, even from the birds in the backyard. One must never lose sight of the fight . What constitutes a fight is what most will never even begin to comprehend . I have dealt with serious fighters , and I have contributed to most . I have encountered men that can use their feet with no space for movement , Chest to chest - No air in between , And still they can kick the other unconscious using their foot from the ground to the others head , Faster than a a professional featherweight boxer can throw a punch to the head ! I have been around fighters all my life , And i have always known who are complete , meaning extremely dangerous , And who are incomplete , meaning lacking in conviction . I encountered those who trained in secret , But I identified them disguising their movement as street fighting , The actions of versatility are unmistakable !
