As a fellow FMA practitioner and instructor, I will have to say that Doug Marcaida is the perfect mix of skill, humor and intelligence that is a credit to the Filipino Martial Arts community. So many detractors and haters don't seem to realize the skill level and advanced training that it takes to present and teach others with the proficiency that this man has. I have never even been in the same room as this man, but I do not hesitate (just from watching his videos) to say that his techniques are solid! Giving credit where credit is due, kapatid. If you ever visit Las Vegas, please feel free to drop by our studio. Salamat sa iyong contribusyon sa sariling atin! Mabuhay ang mga mandirigma!
Great overall philosophy of “opportunity “. I remember goofing off sparing with a pal that was a high deg black belt (which I am not) and he grabbed a stool as a tool to push me back, but the second I saw that he had the thing gripped “backwards”, holding the bottom of the legs instead of the seat, I instantly realized the legs were now pivot points (or “hinges” of sorts) with his wrists, so I used my knee to quickly knock the seat upward towards him, this breaking his grip/control of the stool, and it smacked him in the chin, and down he went (didn’t really want to hurt my friend, but that’s the way it goes when roughhousing). We had a good laugh afterwards and he congratulated me on my quick thinking with regards to “situational objects”. Point has stuck with me ever since. Love your videos 👍
In the US Navy the rolled neckerchief was an important part of the "Crackerjack" uniform. You could tuck in a roll of nickels or dimes in the back of the neckerchief, which laid under the back flap of the uniform. Totally hidden, but if you needed it you could take the neckerchief off and it made a dandy swinging weapon when you cracked somebody alongside the jaw with the coin roll. Plus, if necessary and you had no other funds, you could always pay for a taxi back to the base or ship.
That is the best point Ive ever heard from an instructor, If the opportunity is there take it, adapt to the situation. One thing I learned in the service is to improvise to the situation and go home at all costs.
Being so skilled person i never saw him anger or arrogant in any video most importantly he is so calm and enjoy the training with their partners which is impressive. that's why we love doug. thank you for the footage GN.
The concept is really cool. Using anything on an opponent to get leverage, and the upper hand to win a fight. It reminds me of hockey players and how they have pulled the jersey over an opponents head and arms disabling the opponents use of vision and arms. Awesome.
Great stuff Mr. Marcaida. Your wisdom, knowledge, skill and experience are very evident in this video. The philosophy and concepts mentioned in the video are time tested and proven by those of us who have actually seen real combat; whether it be in actual war or a street brawl. Keep doing what you're doing Sir. All the nay sayers and negative commenters obviously have no experience in the area of combat. Damn MMA junkies...
I love this show so much, mainly this episode because a lot of people at my school wear hats (myself included) and I'm currently training in Muay Thai so if a fight ever comes up... things will get really interesting
Awesome. Best thing Ive heard. Its not about memorizing a technique its looking for opportunity to exploite. 90% of practiced techniques dont come into play in real fights
. 'training yourself to respond when the situation presents itself' - is what I go by from training in 'baguazhang' for many years. It's philosophy is based on 'the book of changes' (basically it's focusis on change) so trains this idea of using the 'methods' to change according to the situation
MrLeonidas0001 "Tactical Adventure Lifestyle" Better play it safe and have a quick detach brim. When they are standing there confused holding your brim, you release the hounds from within and catch them off guard.
MrLeonidas0001 "Tactical Adventure Lifestyle" Why not make it a projectile boomerang brim, so it returns to you after roundhouse-boomerang-smacking every bad guy in its trajectory, leaving a trail of tear/sarin gas vapor? I think with our technology is capable.
use the bill of the cap to jab the throat or eyes i have seen people put lead shot in the lining of their hats and use it like a sap or puting razor blades in the bill and using it for a slashing weapon a hat is something overlooked by security and regular people all the time i am glad someone brought it up
One of the best of showcasing what he's talking about "everything around you is a weapon" Jackie Chan. Yes I know, it's movies but it's not completely fake. What I mean is, in Jackie Chan's movies, he often showcases real options available to him, to protect himself.
In San Soo we redirect whatever incoming; thus, I see using the ball cap as a redirect of the mind. I like to say the body is robot to the mind. When any part of the body gets struck even if minor, the mind directs hands and limbs to cover or comfort the part that is struck. Thus, if you strike the eyes the opponents hands will be trying to cover/protect the eyes from further injury even if only a second. That gives you enough time to implement a follow up strike. Same with a shot to the groin, ribs, back, and so on. The hands will go to where the pain is even for a second. So we redirect the mind mentally just as we redirect an incoming punch physically. And yes, we can use ANYthing as a weapon. Great lesson, thank you...
Hopefully your hat fits the attackers head and your head isnt more narrow and smaller to where the hat won't fit over his head, or your head is not wider to where the hat will simply slip off his head. but this is a great idea and something I never thought of.
That's why I try to carry an umbrella wherever I go :) a glass cannon, sure, but I'd rather be out of a sticky situation and down one umbrella than be stuck in a sticky situation without any improvised weapon on my person. also I know they make a specialty umbrella for that use but I don't have the funds lol
I think that is a pretty cool weapon idea. Can you make a video showing how hard an impact from the hat's metal beads are? Maybe hit an object and see how much damage they do?
after seeing so many videos teaching "advance techinics " of CQC and they all include something about your opponent being extreme dumb and somehow they alwys forget how to use both hands, is really good to see some sobriety and real talk with someone who really knows his job, Thank you, and forgive my eventual misuse of the english, it's not my mother language.
I practiced martial arts for several years, and I actually enjoyed being the "testing dummy" because u learn better that way. I don't like pain or causing pain, but like Doug, I just enjoy the art. My school didn't spar that often, but I always was smiling when we did.
This hat stuff is hilarious! Yes a sap hat is probably gonna leave a mark but glad to see you guys are having fun with it and trying to make a hat a weapon. I've seen a few videos on you tube where people talk about how a baseball cap can be a deadly weapon in self defense but they always follow up with that will be in another video 😂 anyway, nice video and thanks for showing the fun side of training.
He is a great instructor, someone you would want to train with every day of the week. Is that a shoulder harness for a knife? I've tried to find one on the internet and just cannot find anywhere that sells them. If it is what I think it is, could you point me in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate it!!
Honest I would have gone for the knee at 1:30 Try carry on fighting with your knee snapped backward, plus you have more reach with your leg if they have a knife, keeping your torso out of harms way. If you go in the stabbing position look what your forward facing knee does to get reach it is the perfect time to kick their knee and dislocate it.
I've always said a person who can think combatively and think how to use anything as an advantage is a better survivor. I am repeatedly astounding how Funker Tactical keeps stating my same ideals and mind sets.
Great teaching, I studied for years in one particular style and my sensei, would bring something in that he found in the park or in the woods, and I'd have to train for months fighting with whatever.
I like the way Doug thinks about the weapons of oppritunity I had to use this once not the hat thing but the weapons of oppritunity idea. I got jumped by 4 or 5 guys pertty good this was almost 10 years ago but I got away from them and ran for my life they chased me and mind you my ass was kicked pretty bad so when I felt I could'nt run anymore I noticed they were not that far away so I found a dried branch on the ground broke a piece off and when they came back I stabbed 2 of them with it and it was enough to have them back off until an old dude yelled that he's on the phone with police and they ran off. I was really lucky that old guy had the balls to yell that cause who knows what would've happened.
Shotgun Zombie did u miss the par were he say's tho id rather not have it on its about if he already has it on so If I wore a hat this video would make me stop that seems like a pre bunk reason to get ur ass kicked cuz u were wearing a hat
no not a reason to get ones ass kicked but I have myself used a hat as leverage for takedowns, and clinch control as he points out its actually used really well when its on the other person as he points out in the video its not about me having a hat its about him already having one on
OH! Yea, Now I get ya, my bad, lol. That is a good point. The way see it and train though, as soon as someone puts their hands on me, they just gave me control of them. XD
He is absolutely correct and you dont hear that from most instructors...its your decision in that split second and going with no hesitation right into your attack ..because if you dont go now.. you have to mentally figure out and act on what is presenting itself now. ...and you gave your opponent an opportunity now twice to make that sane decision. .I learned that being the smallest kid in class but was the first to go after someone if it appeared as if we were going to fight. Boom try to hit ya like a tornado....Thats the real question you gotta ask yourself do you want to be the tornado¿ or the debris ?.......its that simple
In a fight to the death (as opposed to a school yard fight) you become more focused and less aware of your surroundings. Your ability to think shuts down, the things you practised have primordial memory and will come to you. Anyone can come up with a cleaver opening but as the battle ensues it starts to narrow.
This is why I always carry a fish. Nobody expects to slapped upside the head with a fish.
+Ed Harley lol......
+Ed Harley I thought that was your gf
+Ed Harley I was gonna search on the TF2 Wiki to find the name of that fish weapon that scout uses but the damn sight's got an error on it.
+Ed Harley And if you get hungry...
nice...
But most importantly..."It will Keel!"
Dammit, I came here to say that.
😂😂😂
Iconic
"Nice keel"

Did you even watch this stupid video?

Doug is my favorite. he's the shit.
That is the best point Ive ever heard from an instructor, If the opportunity is there take it, adapt to the situation. One thing I learned in the service is to improvise to the situation and go home at all costs.
Doug Marcaida is such a unique and amazing human being. So multitalented and so humble

im sure he will be glad his combat expertise is being applied to school yard fights
101andrewj
no u
😂
Now this is helpful in everyday situations. Thanks Doug. No crazy choreographed antics, but reality in practice. Great stuff
His mindset is AWESOME! And it's far more realistic to think than what a lot of people teach now.
Mike Reis its always been a mindset, he just reintroduced it to us
I absolutely love the mentality here. This is the way to operate at all times, every day. Respect for Doug and his philosophy.
dude i wanna take lessons from this guy.
Same

This is oddly more entertaining than what I expected.

I love watching masters of the arts showing their moves. So inspirational.
Absolutely brilliant work, I love your attitude Doug and sense of realizim.

DirtPoorFarmer you forgot to write "in movies" after you wrote "i've seen people" and before "put lead shot....".
Love these. Keep them up great instructor with great videos. Awesome.
Doug is the Man. He's incredibly humble. I hope I can learn from him one day

Yeah, the bench is a classic for Jackie Chan.
These lessons with Mr. Marceda is Awesome ! A true humble amazing artist!
I like the creativity in this. Thinking is important not just strength
finally a guy that understands what's actually happening in a fight I'm now a subscriber
...i've lost count how many times i've come back to watch this.
Real deal...the more I see this guy the more I respect him. Thanks for sharing
my father in law 9th Dan 89 years young has studied belt fighting. awesome book coming out he wrote. love hat fighting.

Enjoyed that thank you!!! Thing thing I have enjoyed most about learning kali/escrima/arnis, is that it is fun to learn and to do!!
Doug, I look for You on Forged in Fire! You sir impact many lives with you style and mannerisms!
Mr. Marcaida is definitely an awesome teacher and martial artist. Love to see more vids
Doug,by soul you and your school are true artists of combat. This is true substance.🙏
Hopefully your hat fits the attackers head and your head isnt more narrow and smaller to where the hat won't fit over his head, or your head is not wider to where the hat will simply slip off his head. but this is a great idea and something I never thought of.
As usual very informative never thought of a baseball cap as being a must in my arsenal
As my Aikido sensei said, “if you want it, you cannot have it”. Amazing stuff!!
I have put a rock inside a baseball cap before, but found a beanie to be an even better option....
I just saw a video on Polenar on alternative uses for an AK magazine. I'm sure Doug would come up with pretty interesting uses! Please do that!
That's why I try to carry an umbrella wherever I go :) a glass cannon, sure, but I'd rather be out of a sticky situation and down one umbrella than be stuck in a sticky situation without any improvised weapon on my person.

Thanks for explaining these wonderful principles.

I feel bad for the guy always getting taken down xD

Whatever object this man touches will definitely KEEEEL.
He is a great instructor, someone you would want to train with every day of the week.
Is that a shoulder harness for a knife? I've tried to find one on the internet and just cannot find anywhere that sells them. If it is what I think it is, could you point me in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate it!!
If you want i could link you a karambit with a shoulder holster :)
That would be even better!!
I actually don't have a karambit in my collection yet.
Martin Eidissen I second that notion. Can you link it to me? I would greatly appreciate it.
Martin Eidissen
Could I get that also? appreciate it
its on bladeops.com Just search for kerambit. Its the black one
THIS REDEFINES BADASS!! it seems more practical the learning specific techniques
Master marcaida you are a true master , thank you for teaching me the combat and how to be a good master
Riddick and his tea cup.
Lol. Thats the first thing i thought of when i saw this vid
You forgot after the tea cup he was going to kill the rest of them with a Spam can opening key lol
Excellent presentation and explaining the idea to improvise at the moment. Gracias.
Awesome video......keep ur mind flexible n look for an opportunity
this is the best UA-cam video i've seen.
Great strategy. Every belt I buy has a metal tip, makes a heckuva whip.
This guy is the real deal. Respect
I much respect for these gentlemen.

Great presentation! Lots of ideas and common sense.
Learned the "ol' hat trick" back in '92 from a New Yorker. Never once has it failed when I used it. No one expects to be attacked with a hat.
I've always said a person who can think combatively and think how to use anything as an advantage is a better survivor.
I am repeatedly astounding how Funker Tactical keeps stating my same ideals and mind sets.

This brings back memories when i was a bouncer years ago. And funny enough, a filipino showed me the use of the hat!!! MAJOR EDITION to the arsenal!!!
new to me- time to make the advanced version in my garage!
I'll never look at baseball caps the same again. Thank you.
The legend say's that he blinked once
*So much insight. So much wisdom. Many thanks!*
Glad I wear a hat all the time! XD This is awesome. I especially love how easily this fits into what I already know and train in. :)
Thanks for the concern, but I shave my head anyway.
Shotgun Zombie did u miss the par were he say's tho id rather not have it on its about if he already has it on so If I wore a hat this video would make me stop that seems like a pre bunk reason to get ur ass kicked cuz u were wearing a hat
Wearing a hat is a reason to get one's ass kicked? I don't get what you mean. Please be a little more clear.
no not a reason to get ones ass kicked but I have myself used a hat as leverage for takedowns, and clinch control as he points out its actually used really well when its on the other person as he points out in the video
its not about me having a hat its about him already having one on
OH! Yea, Now I get ya, my bad, lol. That is a good point. The way see it and train though, as soon as someone puts their hands on me, they just gave me control of them. XD
Love to learn new things that's why I always keep up with these guys
I love Doug marcaida ❤️👏👏👏👏
Reminds me of how my grandpa Regino Ilustrisimo used shoes in Dan Inosanto's book 30 years ago. Improvised weapons rock!
Doug is awesome.
good stuff lets see more of this guy!
Can you make a video talking about the knife holster Doug wears?
Can someone post a link to one of the hats with the metal beads?
“Your opponents are weapons.” - Doug Marcaida
...There are many answers to this question, and none of them aren’t hysterical.
so some hats are illegal in different states
shylildude just the adding of a weight as a weapon
+Smiley Dave so hats with a little with a little bit of weight is illegal but rings with spikes or lock in a socks aren't dafuq
adding a razor hidden in a hat is illegal as fuck but if you wanna slash up someones face with stealth it works
3:18 a like ya cut G.
Are there any techniques for cowboy hats or yarmulkes?
Glad i subscribed, thanks guys
love these videos!
Awesome video. Great philosophy that Doug has.
This is great learning video.Thank you :D
Sap hats are effective as well and can hit with quite a punch.
instead of the curvature of the hat to capture things, the lip part of the hat also can be a thrusting weapon
i would like to take yalls class. do yall come to texas??
Good information, I like the idea of an everyday item for a weapon.
What is the leather rig for that Doug is wearing?
Knives, I bet.
roll the cap for impact is nice for attacking hard targets

Some advanced counter-fuckboy tactis right here
If i was to live in the US i would train by him. amazing skills
Thank you for this. In Army basic training, they dont teach much combatives anymore, sad.
thanks ,Sir.....its very powerful .....
