Engines of Amtrak - GE P32-8BWH [REMAKE]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 сер 2022
- Amtrak's P32-8BWH, or simply Dash 8, is a utilitarian sort of locomotive. Not exactly streamlined or built to look stylish, its instead versatile and does whatever job needs doing. While they don't have the most interesting story compared to Amtrak's other locomotives, they did serve a decently important role in the early 1990s as a stop-gap measure. Learn all about Amtrak's "Pepsi Cans" in this Engines of Amtrak remake!

Speaking of how long they have left, Amtrak, unfortunately, confirmed that the dash-8s' days are numbered. During Trainworld'TV's Amtrak 50 live stream, it came out when Amtrak’s brand ambassador, Matt Donnelly, explained why a P42 was chosen for the Dash-8 Phase 3 said (other than 2020 budget restrictions), "most of them are in yard and work train service today, and according to our fleet plan, their time is limited on our roster. They're due for replacement over the next several years." I didn't find the news surprising since the dash-8 fleet turns 31 this year, but its a shame regardless.
Hopefully at least one gets preserved.
@Eragor the Kindhearted Never mind that Metra’s gearing up to eventually replace a bunch of their current fleet of locomotives and passenger cars due to ever increasing maintenance costs and availability issues that are a result of that old age.
@Eragor the Kindhearted m A lot of their old locos are -3 versions
(F40PH-3)
That’s a shame, but nothing can last forever.
Wonder if Amtrak will order some new switchers sometime in the future, as that’s what most Dash 8s have been relegated to. I know P42s aren’t unfamiliar with work trains and switching, but they don’t have much visibility when reversing, so maybe Amtrak will order dedicated switcher units.
@@justahillbilly7777 Now for the opposite: “if it broke, fix it”
Imo, Amtrak’s Dash-8 has to be one of their more unique locomotives due to the build of a freighter being used for passenger service. It’s charming!
I guess the same could be said of the F40PH, being a cowl adaptation of the GP40-2? Still, you gotta love the Pepsican paint scheme!
It looks like a es44ac
Dash-8s can go 103mph? Dang I would have never guessed with a non streamlined design like that!
I’ve always liked these locomotives, and their utilitarian design!
if doing so, half of their horsepower is needed to overcome aerodynamic drag, so only with short trains :D lol
@@denzzlinga gotcha. I always assumed they were meant for heavier trains instead of high speed trains
Years and years ago I saw a pair of these running light, and me being the small child I was at the time, I thought that Amtrak also did freight in addition to passenger trains. I had completely forgotten about that memory until I saw this video. Thanks for bringing it back.
They sort of did when they took mail and transported it on some trains
@@grandtrunk5416 Not what I meant, but that's interesting.
I also thoutgh amtrak did freight lmao XD
There was the Lake Country Limited, which attempted to do double duty as scheduled freight alongside passenger functions, similar to Southern Railways back in the 60s with their Crescent IIRC getting slapped onto freight trains because... well, it was the 60s and the railroads were not doing too hot, especially in passenger service. Plus they're often used outside the NEC for ballast and MOW ferries on their owned lines like the Michigan Line, so I guess technically you could classify that as freight too, although not revenue generating.
Up until covid You can ship a package with Amtrak even if you didn't buy a ticket so besides mail they did ship frieght.
My dad and I actually knew Blair who did the Pepsi can paint scheme. Story goes they were all thinking about various paint scheme designs when Blair went and got a model of the dash 8, painted it himself and showed it at the next meeting. Impressive everyone since it was something they could actually see in person (and not a drawing)
Excellent remake. I've always thought the Dash-8 was a cool addition to the fleet since it basically looked like its freight hauling counterparts.
The the P in P32-8BWH passenger gearing means go faster
@@coquitlam_railfan5686 Right. What I am calling attention to is the fact that they didn't make any drastic appearance modifications like trying to slap a full cowl car body on it.
@@Trains-With-Shane like the Amtrak man said they were a stood gap measure, and Amtrak needed them fast so they most likely didn’t have time to design that
Whenever I see a new engines of Amtrak, I always click
It's like Pavlov
Same
Ditto
Same.
New engines of Amtrak!!!!!!!!!!!
Always a good day when a new Engines of Amtrak drops :D
That was fast. I didn’t expect two engines of videos to be so close to each other
Really enjoy this series. Amtraks dash 8s are some of the most nostalgic locomotives for me, I'm not sure why I just remember them fondly
My 2nd favorite Amtrak units. Really wish that they would repaint them to the "Pepsi Cola" paint scheme.
Loved the Nichijou references. That's my favorite comedy anime.
Also, when I was a kid, I thought the P32-8BWH was a Dash 9. I never noticed it had 4 axles instead of 6.
A good and well used engines of Amtrak.
Thanks for featuring my video of the AMTK 506 in Seattle! Great video!
Most winters, the Hiawatha uses a P32-8BWH. Mainly because the chargers break and the Hiawatha is the first place to get replacement power so that remaining chargers can run on other services. Since you come to Chicago every now and then, I’d highly suggest coming during the winter sometime
Chargers are ugly and stupid looking. Boot them back to Deutschland.
You know it’s gonna be a good day when Amtrakguy365 posts a video
woohoo, a new EofA! Been waiting for the Dash 8 one, awesome video!
Great remake one again! Only saw these engines once.
Imo one of the Top 5 engines that Amtrak has ever rostered
So long have I waited… ITS HERE!!! ANOTHER MASTERPIECE!!!
I've been waiting for this moment :)
The Pepsi Cans were a great nickname for the locomotives
Great video once again! Glad
one of my clips got in.
I saw one of the P32s in its Pepsi can scheme in 1992 on a San Diegan in Fullerton. Impressive at the time, and the P32 even put on a smoke show leaving the station.
Wonder when this would come out. Happy to see it here!
Funny you mention them in service, I just met 515 a while back (August 4th, 2022 to be specific) trailing behind a P42DC on the Silver Star while heading to Tampa before ending in Miami.
I see the Amtrak Dash-8s every so often where I live on the Northeast Corridor, often they are leading or providing most of the power for track renewal trains, or in the event of a power failure they can be seen towing some Northeast Regional sets. Even though they are pushing just beyond 30 years of service. I always enjoyed seeing them since its an oddball of a locomotive, as it represents a freight engine more than a passenger one.
Much better the original. Especially since that your voice sounds
much better and more interested and expertistic in this version.
About a year ago, I saw Amtrak locos 518 and 519 on a ballast train on the Michigan Line. They were tied down in the siding outside of Chelsea, Michigan.
Bro u dotn know how happy i am to see another new engines of amtrak video :D
Great video!
I think the Pepsi Can paint scheme was applied partly because of how boring Phase III would look on a P32-BWH. Just imagine how plain Phase III would be on a unit like that.
I have been a long time thank you dude
Thank you so much Amtrakguy365 thank you for video's of amtrak
Nice video!
Great series! I'm not sure how much other interest there might be, but I'd also be interested in a "Passenger Cars of Amtrak" series if you ever want to get into those. Keep up the good vids!
4:04 That photo is of Amtrak's International just outside of the GTW station in Stratford Ontario which ended in around 2004. Wish I could have seen it.
glad i was able to help again
New suggestion: the GG1s, they were used on Amtrak as well
Great video
Another great video, especially facts about Amtrak.
*F A C T S*
Those Dash-8s yo. Back in the early 1990s there was no shortage of them in California. In an old video I saw they were often on both ends on the Pacific Surfliner. Those horns were constantly heard around the Orange county area a lot
I do love both the Pepsi Can and Phase V paint, but i'm not so sure about Phase IV.
Yes another Engines of Amtrak
Great video and love the usage of Nichijou clips with Yuuko/Yukko as Amtrak and Mio as GE. I think it'd be cool if the AMD-103 saga was told via Nichijou
You gotta love these!
Need to develop P40-8BWH, as Evolution series. Even P44-8Bwh.
Nice!
Nice Video
I love it
oOoOO new remake!!
this was a great vid! and one quick question, how long does it take for you to make one of these vids? it seems like you put your heart and soul into these videos!
I seen them before running on Pittsburgh line it was so cool
Yay new Amtrak video
You know it’s a good day but Amtrakguy365 uploads
I have been waiting for this your editing has become top notch since the original
Babe wake up amtrakguy365 just dropped a new engines of Amtrak remake
Me: *sees this video discussing my favorite Amtrak locomotive
Also me: *realizes the video is 5 minutes and 17 seconds long and swore that there was a dash 8 numbered 517
EDIT: finally! We have a new dash 8 episode! This is by far my favorite Amtrak locomotive and I hope these guys get to stay on the roster longer!
I was not aware of the nickname Hockey Stick for these locomotives! :O
Use to see them on the old International service quite a few times.
This is my favorite Amtrak locomotive
I actually got to see 510 hauling the coast starlight awhile back so I get to check a p32 off my list of Amtrak locos
Favorite Amtrak locomotive
3:25 I’ve seen 2051 at the Amtrak Oakland yard last year in June 2023!
i wonder if he'll make an engines of amtrak vid on the GG1s, the E and F units.
plus, i wanna know the diffrent of the F and E units since they look so much alike
0:59 Nothing to see here, just marking my favorite scene in this video. Also, that scene is from Nichijou episode 4.
I think these P32-8BWH were more or less a "test" to see if Amtrak could use a modern GE locomotive for passenger trains. The result of these 20 locomotives was the 321 GE _Genesis_ locomotives that replaced all the F40PH locomotives between 1992 and 2001.
The Pepsi Can makes a return!
aiyyy best series
Nice
I don't know if it's just me, but the dash 8s really don't look that outdated in terms of locomotive designs.
I like the GE amtrack locomotives there actually featured in the Garfield movie when he’s at the dispatch table
As iconic as the pepsi can is, I think the Dash-8 looks rather classy in phase 5
I actually saw one of these in Orlando about a week ago.
I love this vid I like the Santa fe dash 8
you should do a series like engines of amtrak, but about the coaches
Amtrak's Dash 8 are super underrated since Dash 8s are really good engines.
Good Ol' Pepsi Cans!
I can’t wait for the Genesis
I saw one at Lorton on the way to Cape Hatteras
I was actually watching the AEM-7 remake when this was released.
I wonder who will be picking these up when Amtrak retires them? I know that some freight railroads still use 4 axle locomotives(*), but GE and EMD don't seem to be making any, so these would seem to have a niche cut out for them. Indeed, some F40PH locomotives even found their way into freight service.
(*)Around here, the Providence & Worcester even has some Dash 8 locomotives as well as some historically neighboring GE 4 axle models, so many of the parts should even match up.
Of course, some commuter rail agencies may well also take interest (I'm especially thinking of Metra, which seems to have a tradition of acquiring a hodgepodge of second-hand stuff, although to counter that, they seem to be mainly an EMD shop with a bit of MPI equipment sprinkled in).
Hey nice video haven’t seen the original
I really think when Amtrak eventually retires these units, they should donate them to tourist railroads, like The Illinois Railway Museum. Then paint them back into the "Pepsi can" scheme
Think I found found my favorite Amtrak locomotive right now the dash 8
Ah yes the humble dash-8 freight diesel for passenger use.
I Love this engines and got 2 of them in my H0 rooster
Best Amtrak locomotive.
I love the Dash 8s but every Amtrak engineer ive spoken to tells me crews hate them, they apparently ride rough
:(
You forgot to mention. Phase IV being Diet Pepsi, and Phase V Crystal Pepsi.
The Pepsi can names didn't stop after phase III it continued.
I really hope at least one is preserved!
The dash 8 has the same horn as a BNSF Dash 944CW
Will you do a video on the UAC Turbotrains?
Yes! A new EOA!
Pog
I still get surprised when they stick these on Hiawatha Services out of Milwaukee when the Chargers aren't working right. They seem to have cleared that hump and are back in storage, but they might still be needed when an NPCU or Charger goes kaput on the push-pull until we get those snazzy new Siemens Venture cars with cab cars. Still a wonderful loco imo, I could listen to that 7FDL12 all day.
The good episod
It's a shame the two owned by Caltrans don't get much mainline service any more, but if you take the CC between Emeryville and Oakland you can often see one doing yard work.
Great video. I can say that CDTX 2051 is still in service switching in Oakland, but I do not know if 2052 still is, considered I’ve heard rumors that it’s in storage
Ay Alec.
2051 has been working in Oakland still, 2052 has been in storage for like a couple years now I assume.
@@eliyahtherailfanner131 That’s what I expected. I saw 2051 this past weekend, so I knew 2051 was still running, and it seems my suspicions were correct with 2052. Thanks for the confirmation.
Kinda Surprised Amtrak isn't doing a rebuild on these and getting new yard power. a GEVO V12 and moving to inverter driven HEP should be fairly simple and then use them on their new corridor routes. The 18 they still have would be fine paired with the 100 horizions.
As for new switchers maybe get the rest of the GP15D or set a rebuild standard and upgrade most to be that.
