- It's FINALLY happening!! We are starting to build the kitchen we've been dreaming of for 2.5 years.
There have been so many times that Ryan and I have stood in the kitchen space of our house and talked about where the cabinets and appliances will go, and what the countertops will look like.
Well, it's finally time. We start assembling our cabinets and get to watch the kitchen take shape.

And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on UA-cam. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.

Here's a tip: Once a month go around the house and turn off and on all the shut off valves so if you have to turn them off in an emergency they are not frozen in the open position.
That is a great tip. Nothing worse than needing a shutoff and it being frozen.

YES! Very high anxiety when cutting that slab. We went pretty far wide to start with so we had a little margin of error as we sanded and shaped it. Thanks for following our journey all this time.

Are you going to have roll shelves in the corner cupboard? The shelves I'm talking about roll sideways and swing out to give more storage space.

Be honest, how scared were you when you were just about to cut into that counter top?? I’ve been there and I always get a little sweat on the brow. Kitchen looks good guys!!
Oh my gosh! All of us were so nervous! One wrong cut and we had messed up one expensive piece of fancy wood!

But that butcher block countertop made the cabinets look great.

Actually, after a lot of research we found out that a lot of cabinet builders recommend ikea cabinets if you don’t plan to build them yourself. We also had friends that had ikea cabinets and we loved theirs so we knew it would all be good.
We’ll have open shelving instead of top cabinets.
And yes, we will have an island. My dad is building it (Sara’s build). He decided cabinetry would be a fun skill to add to his list of woodworking skills. We probably won’t get it until the summer.

We know, and with Christmas on its way our schedule will be off because we’re parents first. BUT in 2024 we should be back to a pretty steady posting schedule.

I'm a psychology student and used Sara as a 'subject' for a paper. (SORRY!) Trying to understand the need for a middle age mother (father appears run of the mill) to have an a-typical hair cut and tattoos, home schooling kids, and does little self care (i.e. overweight). I won't bore you with my analysis but I'm sure many viewers have the same thoughts.
Are you actually serious? I’m genuinely curious. You did get a few things wrong. I have a major self care routine. I wake up early each morning to meditate, practice daily gratitudes, journal, and workout. Also, I’m about 10 Lbs overweight. Nothing major. A full housebuild has been tough as far as cooking and meal prep goes. I like getting tattoos because I’m an adrenaline junkie. Better than drugs and alcohol. Oh yeah, I’m sober AF. I quit drinking 4.5 years ago (so did Ryan). Haircut is probably the same reason but I don’t like to walk with the path. I run my own race. And I DON’T homeschool our kids. They attend public school and participate in after school activities. If you ACTUALLY want to use me as a subject, than reach out and do a proper study. I'm genuinely curious about your reply to this. I did research studies in college, as well. We weren't allowed to turn in research that wasn't done properly so I'm just so curious on how you "studied" me without knowing me. I hope you reply back. Generally comments like this don't get a response, though.
