    The two student drivers in this video are my wife, Ginni, and myself. We had a wonderful experience. The video is super and does a great job of showing how loud it is in the cab. Jack Walsh

    Went here in 1996, rode on the footplate of OL 49-7 from Wolsztyn to Poznan, had an amazing time !!

    I did this "experience" nine years ago, December 2008. Ol 49 #59 was the engine we ran the four days we were there, Pm 36-2 "Beautiful Helena" was undergoing an overhaul at that time. This operation developed over the course of a decade or so by a couple of Brits, the Jones brothers, who found that the Poles were very open to allowing foreign railfans the opportunity to ride and operate their steam locomotives. So, as a way of generating tourist revenue to the region, the railroad (PKP) allowed them to formalize bringing in Western railfans for a week of running and firing live, regularly scheduled, revenue commuter trains out of Wolsztyn. It's truly a living museum. I can assure you as a former U. S. locomotive engineer, this would never be allowed to happen on a mainline U. S. railroad, the Feds would have a cow! I didn't feel totally safe doing this - not speaking the language, knowing the rules, the territory, or even the Metric gauges! Fortunately, the crew's English is far better than my (non-existent) Polish.
    When the program is operating, usually two round trips per day are steam powered, one very early in the morning, the second departing mid-day and returning mid-evening. If the trips run to Poznan the engine faces forward both ways (17 stops in about 52 miles each way, about 90 minutes running time). If they go the other way - the name of that town escapes me - they run the engine backwards on the return trip, since there is no turning facility on the far end of the line. Passengers are regular commuters, and I'm sure by now they know that when they see their train is steam-powered that day the crazy Brits and Americans are "playing train" in the engine. My understanding is that like all good things, this program is going to end in a couple of years.

      This regular steam service still runs, but with steam locomotive Pt47-65 and 2 single deck local carriges, which belong to parowozownia Wolsztyn.

    It's a good trip. I've been out there twice working with the crews. Well worth the money.
    Going back out, probably in October with mates from the Severn Valley Railway.

    Well, it's not cheap to keep them running : ) Every year the hobbysts, volunteers and workers from Wolsztyn have a rather hard conversation with the national rail financial executives... so far Wolsztyn is not closing : )

    Poland should realise that preserved locos can be certified for main line running once preserved but cannot once they ve been turned into washing machines, Poland should realise the value of its heretage and start to look after it,Poland is unique, it still has the infrastructure to support it in places !! tourism is big and will be bigger money for Poland, its just that people have got to realise that fact. first preserve infrastructure then the locos and everything else, all the very best mac

    hi luke, i must agree with everything that you have said !!, i have nearly 40 yrs of railway service here in the uk, i used to drive passenger trains with the same locos that i drove freight trains with, now we drive units all diesel of course, but i learned my trade with ex steam loco men, the tails in the mess room were so funny, they were real characters, but to see a country with all the infrastructure still in tact to serve steam locos in full service just does nt exist anywhere else.

  • @mac8323
    @mac8323 11 років тому +2

    our steam specials always seam to drag a diesel behind them cos they cant turn the loco around at its destination, this means extra expense for the hire of the diesel plus the crew that sign that particular type of traction, but if the infrastructure in maintained they can run them as they do now without any extra expense for hire of extra loco and crew, people here pay up to £350 for a seat and meal on these trains that times 4.5 in zlotys on average, big money to the Polish economy !!

  • @mac8323
    @mac8323 11 років тому +3

    Poland should appreciate what has and use it, in the uk today they run main line steam specials but there s always got to be tankers and more waiting around to service them, Poland already has it all there, so maintain it, here a couple of years ago a new steam loco was built (TORNADO) with private donations, another (WARRIOR) will be completed some day, nearly all of our locos that were kept in scrap yards have been restored that s why their building new ones,

  • @mac8323
    @mac8323 11 років тому +2

    thankyou nuff said, i am not a railway enthusiast !! steam engines are ludicrously expensive to run thats why they are on preserved railways where people work for nothing or the love of the job or loco or whatever, yes its a great shame that Poland will have to eventually let these steam engines go to preserved railways being the only place on the planet that has it all, but they will still have a great resource for the future if they maintain the infrastructure that allows them to run

  • @mac8323
    @mac8323 11 років тому +2

    if a steam special runs over here, most of the time theres a diesel on the back of it to pull it the other way as theres very few turntables left and they are all on preserved railways, no water towers so they got to use water trucks even fire trucks and yes the coal has got to be supplied the same way !!! now is that more simple for you?

  • @mac8323
    @mac8323 11 років тому +1

    obviously the way forward for any modern country is electric trains but Poland must realise that its the only country left on the planet i think which has all the infrastructure in place to keep running a main line steam railway, Poland is unique the only one, this should be advertised buy the government and milked for its rightful tourism wealth, you cannot pay to drive any train on a main line anywhere let alone a steam train, Poland realise the potential !! Real Profit for Poland all the best

    Looking at the line, I presume this is the Lezsno run, due to the track works to Poznan?

    Was this train actually in revenue service? Almost empty with no railfans crowded aboard. Strange make up: an actual steam engine with modern double deck commuter cars. (But I do like those big headlights. )

    • @iwogwardecki
      @iwogwardecki 7 років тому +1

      marvin watkins Those cars are not that new. They are from 60's and in that time steam locos were still frequent in regular service. So this is quite accurate historical reconstruction

    as ive already told you im a railwayman with over 39 yrs service so i thought you might realise that I KNOW THAT STEAM ENGINES ARE NOT VIABLE ON A FULL TIME RAILWAY !!!! its not rocket science is it? but ive tried to explain that PROFITABLE STEAM TRAINS RUN OVER HERE!! but the infrastructure is nt around anymore, coaling stages, water towers and turntables have all GONE!! BUT THEY HAVE NT FROM POLAND YET

  • @mac8323
    @mac8323 11 років тому +2

    So if the infrastucture is maintained these stupidly un economical giants can be run on Polish main lines in a more professional way than is done in the uk because every thing was ripped up over here. that way is a professional tourist attraction making a PROFIT , a countries Heratage should be preserved for the young to understand and appreciate the past.

    have children and take them to a show like the great dorset steam fair, mind this is the greatest, and see how the kids eyes light up, that is real profit to me, the notes and coins you may carry are all worthless only metal i e gold and silver have real value, all the very best to you, mac

  • @mac8323
    @mac8323 11 років тому +2

    as far as being an enthusiast, have nt you ever seen a really old veteran car, truck or even a horse and cart running down the road and thought look at that its fantastic ? look up the great dorset steam fair, on google, as for economics everyone learns that through life, no disrespect, profit profit, its all crap, every 10 to 12 yrs theres a recession caused by bankers who still get their bonuses for failier because recession provides opportunities for the rich to make more money,

    hi, i have had to skip through a load of e mails as im very busy, at no time have i used any bad language to you ! i assume you are Polish, ive been trying to learn Polish as i have a great deal of respect for Polish people having known them for 30 plus yrs, but i find the language very difficult or perhaps i have no time to learn a language, bringing up 6 kids and living in work leaves me little time to do anything, as for worshiping steam locos, i do not.
