Thank you for presenting on this topic! I did a dolphin tour in Bimini lady last year with Neal Watson. When we found a group, we waited to see their reaction and how they felt about us being there. Sometimes they were not interested. Other times they eagerly swam around the boat waiting for us to jump in. When we did, they absolutely enjoyed swimming alongside us. On their terms, no chasing. Keeping guests in check can be difficult with those one or two people!

I believe our underwater mammal friends our much more resilient than we think. Yes there's a line, your experience sounded well done but we can't let 1 or 2 bad eggs ruin it for everyone. Thank you for sharing your Awesome experience! I hope to one day have such an experience! Overall!? Yes we must be better stewards of our majestical natural planet. GAIA! 🙏❤️🙏

first off, I dont know why you thought grabbing on to a dolphin's fin was a good idea to begin with. I am pretty sure you wouldnt want something to attach itself to you for its form of "entertainment". Secondly, you go to another country to swim with whales (since it's illegal here) and then find out it is not good for them? You make some odd choices for someone who allegedly cares about these animals.

So if you are a “researcher” you can go swim with them to “study” how swimming with them changes their behavior… How do they know what they do when no one is watching? Then recommend no one should swim with them. Eventually no one will care about them because no one has ever seen one. Seem to me the best thing is to let people swim with them so they will care more about them and the oceans. Swim with does not mean ride them.

I've been swimming with manatees every winter since becoming PADI certified in '98. They have been arresting people all this time around the springs in Ocala, Fla. where they congregate in great numbers during the winter. The law is you can't pursue them. If they choose to come to you it's okay. But you can not chase them. Also your not allowed to feed them. In the major areas game wardens will wait in scuba gear to make arrests and often do.

A few years ago we had NOAA enforcement at Kahe several times per week. I haven’t seen them since the pandemic though. When they did show up regularly, I spoke with Officer Newmann about the impact. He cited an example of a bay on the big island that used to get your boats to with the spinners. That pod got sick of it and left permanently.

Why swim with whales and dolphins when you can swim with great white sharks there more fun to swim with then dolphins and whales, cause if you piss off the shark your no longer a rider but his next meal

Good info, man. I swam with dolphins in Australia, and we would wait on a line at the surface for them to approach us, instead of chasing them down. We can love wildlife and want to see cool animals up close, but we have to respect those animals' personal space. I think this is true for shark dives, too, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Why are they protected in Hawaii? Because when humpback are in Hawaii, they are there to breed and give birth. People don't need to be harrassing them during this time. Stop bithinn about it and follow the law. I don't care where you are, to chased an animal that doesn't want you there is disgusting! Next you will want to harassment sea turtle (honu) or Hawaiian Monk seals. If you want to ride a dolphin, get a job at Seaworld!! Disgusting!!!

Great video with nuance. No one who's willing to change their behavior will care about facts, and science, though. There are studies on ideology and appeal to nuance and contradictory info.
At the end of the day, everyone who's alive now who want's to be a part of the path forward needs to be open to pulling back on experiences and minimizing impact on other animals. They also need to be open minded to seeing that things that seem fine, might not be helpful. And, animals theese days need all the help they can get.
Some figures say bugs an non-human mammals are down like 70-80% by mass from a century ago. and diversity is dramatically down. My comment isn't ment to be doom and gloom. Humans have changed the face of the planet. We are amazing.... lets be a new type of amazing. Pay attention, and give space for animals. Help let them be wild and natural. Observe dont interact. Sure play with frogs and snakes and bugs in your back yard, but let that just help you respect and leave the wild as wild.

Big thing he did which he was not to do. Great pictures. He had a friend with him. Though seeing an a bis was so forboning. 😮

I find it extremely hard to believe that any scientific evidence can be drawn and say we are hurting them in some way by interrupting their naps.
I mean I get it but at the same time I call BS that we are hurting them in some way by being in the water with them as they swim around. I say it's ridiculous and there is no issue at all..... unless someone hurts them physically. But that's of course my opinion. I just base that on common sense.

When I lived in Hawaii many years ago, it was okay to swim around dolphins (and turtles) as long as one kept a distance. Can’t remember how far, but it was a reasonable distance. Thanks to abuses of these rules by people like you and other mainlanders, who don’t bother learning the rules and regulations before such activities, the government had to make much stricter rules. Thanks a lot!
Just respect da Aina and the ocean, and also respect the culture by learning their rules as soon as moving there. Ask the locals, they’ll tell you…
