S1 - Ep 220 - Philippolis - A Little Town Situated in the Middle of South Africa!

  • The gravel road I had planned to take from Vanderkloof Dam to Philippolis was closed to the public so we had to take a detour of almost 200km to reach our destination, which meant we would only arrive in the dark. This actually gave us the opportunity to see this little town in a different light to how we normally see the places we visit. Since we arrived too late to explore, we booked into our accommodation at the Philippolis Hotel for the night, enjoyed pizza for supper and woke up ready for a day to explore. Situated in the middle of South Africa, this amazing town has a rich history and so many places of interest. We made it our mission to try and find as many as possible! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #philippolis #freestate #orangeriver #northerncape

    This place is really awesome. I think with being able to work remotely these days .... it makes these gorgeous little towns a possibility. Lets hope people get out the big towns and go settle in these lovely old towns

      I agree. Driving down the streets of the town, we could easily imagine ourselves sitting on the porch with our laptops and watching Philippolis go by. We thought that that would be so cool! It was fun to be in town on a Sunday morning and the local residents we spoke to, were all very friendly. We didn't drive past any medical facility, but could easily have missed that. I would imagine that would be an important factor for most thinking of relocating to a smaller town. Thank you for jumping on board and exploring Philippolis with us! 🤩🚗

      Arriving in town on that Saturday evening was really special and to see the main road in the soft light of the street lamps, was a special experience. As usual, we were ready for bed early that evening and our room at the hotel was a lovely place to just chill and relax. I imagine you can also see yourself sitting on one of those wraparound porches, that was certainly on our minds as we drove through. We appreciate you joining us as we explore these smaller places. 😊🚗

      We thought it was a great town too, it has a typical small-town vibe which we love! Your sister must have a ball whenever she gets to spend time there. We were there on a Saturday evening / Sunday morning, so it was obviously quieter than during the week, but we got the feeling that the town is a calm and tranquil one. We're delighted that you visited Philippolis virtually with us and no doubt you'll visit in person again next year! ✈️🇿🇦

      Yup, we don't often drive that late in the evening, but there has been a time or two that we just ran out of daylight hours and had to. The drive down the main road of Philippolis after dark was something special though, so I'm glad that we arrived late here of all places. It means so much that you felt the atmosphere (or the 'vibe' as Sonia would say) of Philippolis by driving through the town with us. It's a tranquil place and we found the exploring calming and relaxing, probably also because of the two cuppas that morning, which I'm sure you must've smiled at. ☕ I hope you're buckled up for the next trip, it's a completely change in scenery. We look so forward to taking you with us! 😁🚗

    Ah! At last Philippolis! This sudden privatisation of some areas and thoroughfares makes me so mad, its rich overseas moguls who are buying up tracts of land, a lot of them are Chinese.....a lot of South Africa actually no longer belongs to South Africa! Isnt this just a new form of colonisation? But let me stop there. At least you saw a beautiful sable! And the Free State evening is so amazing, and Philippolis by night! So special! Yep! That slide is the way I remember them. So glad you visited the Emily Hobhouse memorial. Such a lovely peaceful little garden, can almost sense her spirit there. You will certainly feel safe staying at the Old Jail, actually doesnt look too different to the average house in Cape Town these days. High walls, razor wire, electric fence...hummmmm

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Рік тому +5

      We often get to roads which Google Maps included in our proposed route and they end up closed, so this is not a new occurrence for us. I also totally understand that farmers have to protect their properties, crops and especially their livestock from theft and have to ensure that no-one passes through and I have no problem with that. What was different this time around, was that there was no detour of similar or slightly longer length than the original route and we had to travel much, much further than we originally intended. But that's all part of travelling the backroads and we get that. 🚗😁 That sable was gorgeous, it has always been one of our favourite antelope and they're elusive in the Kruger National Park, let alone anywhere else! The Old Jail was actually quite amazing and I believe the accommodation is quite luxurious. I think it would be an experience staying there! Thank you for joining us for our last day in the Free State! 😊

    Oldest town and NG Church in the Free State, first dominee was Colin Fraser (1837-1911) from 1863-1907. Then Ds SJ Perold from 1907-1916, thirdly Tobie Muller 1916-1918....the first dominee who held a church service in Afrikaans in Stellenbosch before moved to Philippolis. Lourens van der Post was inaugurated in the NG Church as a young man in 1915 by Dr. Tobie Muller. Colin Fraser was the father of Rachel (Tibbie) the wife of President Steyn. Tibby and Emily Hobhouse started a "sewing school" for women after ABW2. Interesting graves in the cemetery......my favorite town in the Free State

    Must have been in around 2007 that I did a ride to the Desolation Rally in Graaff-Rienet and we went via Trompsburg and Philippolis. Whist Trompsburg’s hotel was buzzing, Philippolis was very rundown. Poor maintenance, abandoned buildings and the like. Great to see how it’s improved since then.

      Thanks for the info on Sir Laurens van der Post. 👌🏻 I don't know for sure, but I think the staff of the nearby Transgariep Museum may have a hand in the maintenance of the garden at the Emily Hobhouse Memorial since they've dedicated quite a few rooms to her life and work as well. My Mom an Dad were born in Philippolis in 1933. My Dad strew Mom's ashes on the "kanon koppie" next to the canon facing east in 1998 and us children his in 2019. My one Uncles also. Not sure when. They could never stop talking on how they enjoyed playing on that koppie as kids around the 40's. My Grandpa owned a garage which was on the now open space in front of the koppie. I have a pic. There were 4 garages in town at that stage because of it being on the main route. My other Grandpa was a teacher at the original one room school which is now a restaurant as far as i understand.
    The Fiis family currently still living there own a very successful guesthouse called Groenhuis Gastehuis. They play a huge role in keeping the town together. Jens Friis wrote a book "Philippolis. The sign at the gun powder storage building was not taken off, it was stolen off. Also, Emily Hobhouse did not take care of people, in South Africa, she fought against the atrocity of the British Empire with their concentration camps where thousands of women an children died. Call a spade a spade. Great video for the rest.

      @@DustBugsTravel I agree 100 % that it is not a history channel, yet in the Springbok video you went at length to explain the history of where the name of Spektakelpas originated from. Emily Hobhouse is in the class of an Anne Frank or a Florence Nightingale. She was brave British woman that stood up against the atrocities of her own government. She ended up on the right side of history. I will be surprised if she was not part of your history curriculum at school. i.e no real reason to fact check anything. Playing her contribution to humanity down to "good things " is absolutely disrespectful of what she achieved. Picking up others garbage or dishing out water bottles at a local marathon are also "good things to many people". That is the reason why I commented. For the rest you doing a good job with these videos

      While I appreciate your input, I really don't want to enter into a long back-and-forth about this and this will be my last response on this topic. History is amongst a multitude of things we enjoy and read up on while we're travelling and no two of the 390 videos on our channel follows exactly the same format or variety of information. It depends entirely on the town or place we're visiting at the time and what info we happen upon. Since we travel for enjoyment and ours is a travelling vlog for fun, we don't take any info too seriously and don't ever claim the content online to be 100% accurate. In the thousands of comments we've had in the last almost two years, our viewers have corrected information often and we have absolutely no problem with that. Your initial comment was different in that you insinuated that we deliberately sugarcoat info, which is not our goal. We have a specific way of speaking and will always be authentic to ourselves, so will continue on our merry way. Thank you for watching our videos. 🚙🙂

    Could someone explain as to why Phillipolis has not sunk into the cess pit of civilisation in RSA.?

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  Рік тому +3

      Philippolis was actually one of a few towns during this trip that seemed to be in good shape still. We actually chatted to some locals in town about this and, while they have the odd complaint about the local authorities, they feel that their town still functions well for the most part, which was great to hear. 👍🏻 They did express the hope that this will continue and that the ever-present threats of depopulation and lack of funding don't cause deterioration in the short to medium term. We hope for that too.

    First time I have seen Philippolis in the dark. I checked on my Tracks4Africa maps and the gravel road from Luckoff to Philippolis show as a private road...so must have been a private road for some time and your map probably not updated? But what I also see on T4A is that there is a gravel road from Luckhoff to Fauresmith so you did not have to drive via Koffifontein. What I would like to know is the condition of the tar road from where you left Vanderkloof over Luckhoff to Koffiefontain please. The last time I heard it was in very bad shape but that they were going to fix theroad soon. Thanx

    • @DustBugsTravel

      Philippolis was quite a sight after dark, we loved the look of the church and the main road by the light of the street lamps. 👌🏻 I have experienced before that some roads which Google Maps includes in a specific route, are indeed closed or private when we arrive. Detours of a similar distance are normally available though, but not this time around. I saw the gravel road between Luckhoff and Fauresmith on the map, but because it was already late and we slow down quite dramatically on gravel, especially after dark, and I knew that we already had a long stretch of gravel from Fauresmith to Philippolis, I opted against this. The road you asked about, was in fair condition I'd say. The stretch between Vanderkloof and Luckhoff was in better shape than the piece between Luckhoff and Koffiefontein. There were sections of roadworks on this particular stretch and temporary road surfaces have been created in two places to the left of the main road while they're working on the roads. I hope this helps. 🚗🛣️
