Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune is on its way. And while the Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV has not been cast, he plays a big role in the outworking of the story of this film. In this video I explore the Padishah Emperor of the known universe, Shaddam the 4th of House Corrino and discuss the impact he has on the plot of Frank Herbert's first novel.

I agree with you whole heartedly about Mads being the perfect choice for the emperor. He's one of those actors that can pull of the powerful, regal look while at the same time maintaining the age/vigor combination that the emperor is supposed to maintain.

Mads Mikkelsen would be a great choice in terms of acting… in terms of appearance is questionable. Thanks to the Dune: Imperium board game, we have a glimpse at what the Emperor is to look like. And it’s insanely accurate to the book; looking as if he were 35, but is as frail as an elder, complete with a long red beard. If Mikkelsen were to grow that long of a beard and possibly have the makeup department dye it, he would be perfect.
You're just describing Domnhall Gleeson as a perfect casting choice (he's a natural redhead and they would not have to dye his beard...). But honestly, I don't see it happening that they will cast a younger actor, because he would be difficult to sell as somebody who has grown-up children, which would be difficult with a 30ish actor. Not everybody who will see the movie has read the book and can make the connection - that Shaddam is in his 70s but looks like a man in his 30s. So a youngish Shaddam might be a bit onconvincing.
They'd probably go for someone somwhere in between 50 and 70 with an auithoritative and villainous air. Coming to think of it, Michael Wincott might be a great choice also. Villeneuve's movies all have an offbeat air about them and his personality projects a sufficient amount of edginess as well.
This is one of the many reasons I don't care about fidelity to the novels when it comes to mostly irrelevant appearance details. One of the main antagonists being a super-frail 35-year-old with a long red beard? No thanks. Apart from important details like Fremen/etc. having the Eyes of Ibad or Vlad being a big ol' boy, I hope Denis uses a pretty free hand for casting/appearances going forward with the second film. E.g. Pieter De Vries looking like a cenobite in the first film.

I noticed that Gurney was not the hideously scarred goblin that he's described as in the novels and instead was portrayed merely as a grizzled middle aged soldier. While this is important to his back story as a victim of Harkonnen cruelty, I can understand dropping his backstory given the need to keep the plot moving at a brisk pace.
People made a huge fuss about Liet Keynes being cast as a woman but . . . Honestly . . . It didn't make a damn drop of difference and Sharon Duncan-Brewster gave a solid performance.

I love the not so subtle eastern elements of Dune. It makes the universe so much more unique than many other science fiction worlds on a surface level format.
From the little hints of Persian Culture like the symbol of house Corrino being a lion and the title of "Padishah" meaning Lord King to the rise of Paul's empire being similar to the rise of the Umayyad Empire.

@@arnorrian1 The book also had some different genders for how Dennis cast/portrays them in the film. He isn't following the book to the letter, so he can also cast Mads as the Emperor instead of Gyllenhaal. Having said that. I do agree with your casting choice.
I think both Gyllenhaal and Mikkelsen are too young - Shaddam is suggested to be elderly, at least 60 or better 70.
Now I want to know what Villeneuve's Spacing Guild is going to look like. We haven't seen Heighliners yet, and we haven't seen Guild Navigators yet (I hope they've been sufficiently Cronenberged by all that spice they consume...)

@@mikaelferrer1015 Ifg you mean those fellows with the space suits or masks that make them look as if they do not have any face at all - then I've seen them, too, briefly. I had no idea they were meant to be from the Guild, though - I assumed them to be Face Dancers.
I think it would be a great idea to not show the Guild Navigators in full, but only to show bits and pieces of them to give the audience a vague idea of what they would look like - Villeneuve did something of that sort with the aliens in Arrival.
We did see the Heighliners in Dune 2021. The massive cylindrical ships that look like sandworms. One scene shows Caladan on the other side to a different point in space.

You know what? Scratch that. After hearing the description of the Emperor, it has to be Jonathan Rhys Meyers!
As great an actor and screen presence as Charles Dance is, it's a mistake for any movie to use actors from either GOT or Breaking Bad. It just adulterates the production due to the powerful impression they made on us in the former two. When people see John Carlo Esposito in any movie (Star Wars, The boys etc), especially when playing a dangerous, overly calm and prim type, people cant' help but be taken out of the current movie they are watching and think 'Here we go, Gus Fring is badass'.

Then I went on to give a second example of an actor who was in a hyper well known role in a show being cast in other productions.

It's the curse of the definitive role. Many TV actors can never settle or do any other truly unique and great work once they have given such a powerful performance in a landmark production.

I must admit I'm liking all these possible actors you feature on the thumbnails. I think Anya-Taylor Joy looks great as Irulan. Mads Mikkelsen seems very appealing as the Emperor...
What I really love about this casting choice is that we could actually see a little out of left field acting in Walken that inspired Jodorowsky to consider Salvador Dali as Shaddam in his aborted Dune film concept.
Always enjoy your take on this project. I can tell that you (unlike some others) have actually read the books (maybe even more than once). I think your insights are spot on, and while I don't always agree with them, they are based on the original material (the books), not on 1984 movie or the 2000 mini series. I've view some of the other material being offered about the upcoming adaptation, and wonder if those offering this content have ever read the books. Do you have any idea where this first part will end according to the original story? The emperor makes several appearances in the book before Leto's death and Paul and Jessica are "sent" into the desert. Just wondering. God bless, stay well. Also I think Helen Mirren would be a great choice as the reverend mother GHM!
From the material that we have seen in the trailers so far, it's reasonable to assume that tghe first movie will arrive at least at the point where Paul and Jessica are with the Fremen. It will also have to be at a point which provides sufficient closure for the first part, so it may either be at the point where he acquires his name Muad'Dib or up to the point where he passes the test of riding the worm abnd becomes an adult according to the understanding of the Fremen. Then the secondf part could start with the Fremen, under Atreides guidance, fighting back the Harkonnens, and then up to the end of the first book.

I think there are a lot of tragedies within Dune where people make personal choices that they think are for the best but really lead them to destruction.
The Emperor should have married Duke Leto to Irulan and left it at that. Leto did have a certain amount of ambition but I got the impression that he was also very honorable and had a great deal of integrity. I don’t think he ever would have deposed the Emperor if he’d been his father-in-law. I think the Emperor’s fatal flaw was that he couldn’t see people as they really were. He could only view them through the lens of what he would do in a given situation. That’s why it was impossible for him to see that Leto never would have moved against him.
An Empire of 10.000yrs doesn't trust the integrity of an individual leader. Leto was eventually going to die, and his successor would rule and die, and his successor after him, without guarantee of that same integrity, but still inheriting the power consolidated by Leto.
It could even be argued that, in the context of this society that relies on a balance of power, Leto consolidating that power was an act of aggression against the future.
I think you mean marry off Irulan to Paul not Leto. Leto had lady Jessica and loved her fiercely. That would have made Shaddam and Leto brothers in law.
@Kimberly Robinson, you seem to be talking about Dune as if it was factual, real history. It's a work of fiction. As such, the author needs to create "tragedies" and flawed characters to flesh out a compelling story. Otherwise it would be a much shorter and boring read. So it is kind of silly to try to suggest what the characters should have done, lol.
@@AgentExeider No, I believe Kimberly did mean Leto, not Paul, as suggested in the video. Lady Jessica was Leto's concubine, not wife, so therefore, he would have still been available to be married to Irulan. History is full of marriages with concubines/mistresses/lovers on the side. Even at the end of David Lynch's Dune, Paul declares that he will take Irulan as his wife but that he will not love her, his heart belonging to Chani instead.
What I don't get is why the Emperor didn't have his eye on Paul for Irulan. Because all interstellar travel in the Known Universe is controlled by the Spacing Guild, it would not be that hard to keep Paul out of touch with Leto if Paul were required to remain on Kaitain, or else given duties that required him to travel the Imperium and left him little time to see his parents. That would have given him a chance to get on Paul's good side and cultivate his loyalty. Although Shaddam IV did not know about the Kwisatz Haderach, Paul would have never fully-realized his powers had he not been sent to live on Spice-saturated Arrakis.

Arg you got me with the thumbnail, I thought it was an actual casting! Though yes I would also agree that Mads Mikkelsen would make a perfect Emperor. It would be nice to get a glimpse of him at the end of the first movie, as well as the Irulan. My vote for her would have to be Elizabeth Debicki. Seeing how she has progressed as an actor in her roles is just amazing, and I can imagine she would look and play the role of galactic royalty quite well. Also there are few women who I think could stand up to Paul when he is at his most powerful the way an actor like Dekicki would. Though I can also really see her playing one of the more prominent Bene Geseret like Odrade or Lucilla, if the series does well and goes that far, so I'm a bit torn there!

If Christopher Lee were still alive, he would be perfect. I personally want to see Ian MacDiarmid play the role, he played one Galactic Emperor, now he can play as Emperor of the Known Universe
The Emperor has always been a somewhat odd issue for me, in Dune; he seems to be scared of Duke Leto Atreides, whom he otherwise would like, but we never see anything that hints Leto is actually planning to endanger the Padasah Emperor's position. Even if his scheme had totally succeeded, and the Atreides been wiped out to the man, and even if that didn't open the way for Baron Harkonnen to take a shot at him, it doesn't seem to help Shaddam IV. He still has no male heir; he might have been better off pairing his daughter with Leto, or Paul, than other prospects, and it seems weird he'd try so hard to wipe a loyal line that hasn't wronged him when this act doesn't help his other long-term goals. I'm not even sure that there is a system in place where by someone like Leto could take a shot at his throne, within his own lifetime, since prior to gaining control of Arrakis, Atreides would lack the resources to pay the Guild to move their soldiers, and Shaddam could just pay them more not to. The Baron's motivation has always made sense to me, and that even without his sociopathy, but the Emperor always felt like he was moving against a perceived threat that wasn't really a threat, and in a way that didn't really seem to improve his long-term position. If Harkonnen were forcing him, or Atreides actually appeared to want the Golden Lion Throne; even if we just saw other members of the Laansrad bucking against the Emperor's tactics, and looking to raise Leto to the throne for their own benefits, it might have made sense, but here, I see none of that, and the day after the fall of House Atreides, the Emperor's position isn't really any better than the day before.
For Shaddam, the problem is not what Leto has done or what he could do, but his popularity within the Landsraad, and consequently what others could do because of Leto.
It was the Atreides' new military strength that the emperor feared; a fighting force so well trained that it could rival his own. It's mentioned in Dune, in a conversation between the Fenrings.
The Bene Gesserit already had their plan in that Irulan was to marry one of the Harkonens. Jessica screwed the plan up by bearing Leto a son. They threw their lot in with getting rid of Paul and Jessica and reset the genetic breeding board by hoping that Irulan would marry one of the Baron's nephews. The bloodline would still be intact as the Reverend mother was Jessica's mother and the Barron was her father. So two of the three pieces were in place.
The Emperor wanted Atreides knocked down a peg or two, specifically Leto, not necessarily excised from all existence as the Baron wishes, however his posturings vanish into irrelevance once the Guild make it clear that Leto and his offspring must die no matter what and above all else as they begin to glimpse the Witches maneuverings so in a choice between no Guild assistance and thus instant death or continued Guild assistance it is a no brainer is it not.
So whatever wreckage is wrought in the Noble houses is nothing to even the hint of a moment of existence without Guild approval, as they say context is for kings or Padishah Emperors as the case maybe.
It always felt more like Shaddam projected his insecurities onto Leto, and therefore saw him as a threat to his rule because that is what *he* would do if their positions were swapped. After all, Leto has a son, while Shaddam was doomed to have no male heir (through Bene Gesserit design), only daughters. Historically, noble houses tend to champion popular leaders with male issue to lead. Can't forget that Leto is also Shaddam's cousin, and could be a possible challenger to the throne.

Mads Mikkelson is a beautiful man… We need to petition Vinny to cast Mads as the emperor! Mads a perfect example of an ageless grown man in his fifties. Also his regal presence on screen combined with his exotic accent and speech. It’d almost fit too well

My biggest issue with Herbert’s dune was the length of house Corrino’s rule. Leto would have been more of a believable threat to the emperor if the throne had switched houses many times before.
In Jodorowsky´s version, the character was going to be played by Salvador Dalí. =) .

I think Ciaran Hinds would make a great Shaddam, and so would Hugo Weaving (Elrond from LOTR).
After what happened to him in Rome and Game of Thrones, Hinds deserves to be emperor for a day or two.
He played the Russian president excellently in the sum of all fears and plays a menacing gangster in the Irish tv show kin.

I hope contrary to the thumbnail Villeneuve reserves Mads for Count Fenring. Shaddam can be played by any other dude, he is just to look royal and pompous and, when time comes, shocked.
Fenring however needs a REAL persona. I cant even think who could play his wife, such a character!

José Ferrer a Puerto Rican actor was the emperor. I think a great choice for emperor would be Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro for 2022 or 2023 when the second movie comes out. José Ferrer was the first Puerto Rican male actor to win an Oscar. Benicio del Toro was the second Puerto Rican male actor to win an Oscar. Dune seals the deal.

Apparently he’s really wanted to work with Denis for a long time and he LOVES the Dune book. I’ve seen old man Walken turn in some game changers when he’s passionate and I feel like he’s gonna come out golden in this! Denis is great with older actors and the weight they carry

Fun Fact: Throughout the novel, only three characters ever refer to Arrakis as Dune aloud, Piter De Vries, Stilgar, and Tuek the smuggler. Paul only ever thinks the name, and Irulan writes it. No other character ever refers to Arrakis as Dune.
"The planet is Arrakis. Also know by less than a handful of people as Dune."
Speaking of Irulan,, I think she should have been in the first part already - in the novel, many of the chapters are precded by quotations from histoircal books allegedly written by Irulan, so implicitly it is her who tells the story, even though we do not see much of her.
I think a great actress to play her would be either Margot Robbie or that French actress who played Fleur in the Harry Potter movies, Clemence Poesy. Irulan, as far as I can remember, is described in the books as blonde, tall and slender, with an arrogant expression on her face; especially Poésy could pull it off.
@@christianealshut1123 Interesting choices, and yes that's Irulan's look. And pondering my own choices for Irulan made me feel old because I realized that my first several choices are too old. A young Charlize Theron or Michelle Pfeiffer would have been perfect. Margot Robbie is jaw-dropping gorgeous, but she never quite manages to look elegant, certainly not aristocratic or regal. And Clemence Poesy has kind of a cute but weird little face. Maggie Grace is a bit old at 36, but I think she'd still make an excellent Irulan. Hermione Corfield would be my top pick, smokin' hot but elegant when she decides to be. @@jerrysstories711 I've seen Clemence Poesy in one other thing besides Harry Potter, and that's a film about Mary Queen of Scots - that's why I thought of her. And she 's one of a few young talents out of the Harry Potter movies (next to Emma Watson and Domnhall Gleason) who actually made it and really have talent.
And I have a movie on DVD where Robbie and Ronan actually face it off as two queens - Mary Queen of Scots (Ronan) and Elizabeth I (Robbie). They are both formidable in it, but for Irulan I think Robbie would be the better actress.

I would definitely like to see Patrick Stewart as the Padishah Emperor in part two. Not only would it be nice to have that connection with the Lynch movie, but I think he could pull it off quite nicely. He has the Shakespearean background to really capture the tragedy at the end of Shaddam's own story. He never really wanted to move against Leto but politics forced him to.
I like it. He can pull off someone who has a villanous edge. He proved it in Green Room
He may be considered too old and over extended as he's committed to seasons 2 and 3 of "Picard".

I saw a video on Star Trek and Q and how nearly 30 years after Picard's last encounter with Q he returns.. both actors are committed to season 2 and the actor who plays Q is committed to the first part of 3.. so it should be interesting. Please let this character be played by Charles Dance! He played Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. He perfectly encompasses the description you gave of this character. An extremely virulent man for his age, who really does look younger than he is, with natural red hair and predatory bird-like eyes. And he’s a terrific actor! Charming but ruthless. The audience loves to hate him.

Daniel Craig as Shaddam would work imo, he has the fair complexion, aquiline features, and piercing eyes Shaddam is described as having in Dune. A younger Charles Dance is perfect, I loved someone else's suggestion of Christopher Lee too
... although Mr Lee is unfortunately long passed.

Not such a bad idea; I saw him play the role of George VI of England in The Darkest Hour, and he was quite convincing in the part (and he looked more like him than Colin Firth did).
I would really like Charles Dance to play the Emperor. He would fit the role perfectly, imo.

I think an international actor would be great as the Emperor. I'd favor Mads, Daniel Bruhl, Shah Rukh Khan or Antonio Banderas. The cool thing about casting Shaddam is the wide age range you could pull from. For Fenring, Benicio Del Toro, Jeremy Davies or maybe Bill Skarsgård on the younger side. Jeff Goldblum would be too on the nose for me.
Benicio Del Toro as Count Fenring is my choice as well.
You might not know him but Jason Watkins would have been great as Fenring, has the right look I think, but maybe he is too old now, not sure how old Fenring is supposed to look, think he is about the same age as Shaddam
Banderas with beard and hair similar to leto to mark the resemblance to the Duke would be a nice choice

Fassbender as Macbeth was perfect. He can definitely carry the role as the emperor.

Hugo Weaving might be an interesting casting choice. His Elrond in LOTR makes me think maybe he could pull this off. Gary Oldman might also be an interesting choice.

Since his name is kind of arabian it would be logical to cast a more dark skinned actor...Ben Kingsley for example.
@@benceelias1849 It's 30,000 years in the future, I'm quite sure due to marriage and interbreeding Shaddam could very well be portrayed by a Polynesian, or Indian person, however it's not like we don't know how he looks, the author briefly described him.
Still though Ben Kingsley is a great actor and another fine pick.
I know it sounds crazy, but I wouldn't want Anthony Hopkins to play emperor Shaddam. I don't want another version of Odin. Although he's a great actor, I always thought that sometimes he can be a bit monodimensional, like he's playing different versions of himself. Maybe I'm wrong. And Hugh Laurie?...No. Maybe in Jodorowsky's version. Charles Dance and Mads Mikkelsen would be great, but Mikkelsen is a bit younger. May I also add Ian McShane in the list?

Very interesting. I wonder how close to the book the film will be regarding the characters and what liberties will be taken from that aspect. From what people have said, it seems to be somewhat faithful based on the trailer and images.
They've made some changes in this version. Liet Kynes is a woman in Villeneuve's version. In the novel and the 1984 version Liet Kynes is a man and the father of Chani.
