The best part of the video is watching the drummer in the back. He sees Jon B start to improvise and crush and he starts shaking his head in pure amazement like what am I am watching here is a masterclass in piano and knowing how to take classic opera and add a little funk to it
I started laughing when he asked baptiste if he knew opera and he said.. Yeah i went to Juilliard..thats like asking michael phelps if he can swim. Lol

You don't need to be a professional pianist to judge some else's playing lol. He struggled to keep up improv-wise and beat-wise. Ofc no shame in that- I would certainly expect that a guy who got his master's from Juilliard would do better than Simon Helberh haha!
Could there be an album of collabs between Jon Batiste and guests such as this? I get this version of Queen of the Night stuck in my head and it's hard to shake out!
That moment when you realize that they improvised something in 30 seconds far more musically creative then what most of the popular music "artists" of today takes months to conjure...
This must be before Jon Batiste became well-known, and got his Grammys. I'm thinking "Who's Simon Helberg?", and he's thinking, "Jon Batiste?" ! I wonder if he knew Jon would someday get all those Grammys this year!!!

An also what most people don't understand is that chat shows are entertainment, so the idea is to entertain the audience, so unless you have the best improv comedian's on the stage (it ain't going to work).
P.S. There is one who could carry the whole show by himself, and that was Mohammad Ali, very quick witted, very intelligent guy, not too many people are as entertaining as him.
Thanks for your reply. I remember being at the taping of your show on the 2nd anniversary of 9/11 where the topic was PMS. I asked you, or your guest, a question that pertained to my then girlfriend, and then, never heard the end of it. Shoulda known better.
+steveknows62,
Well that's show business, if I can't answer the question, I tend to reject it (sometimes I have my security escort people out of the building if I'm really under pressure).
But online I'm a bit more honest, a bit more real.
What a freakin AWESOME musical collaboration. I'm embarrassed to say I just recently discovered Jon Batiste's real music outside the Late Show. A lot of good stuff on UA-cam.
Confidence, Positivity, Infectious Energy = Jon Batiste.
Just 4 fun.. wud like 2 see Jon and Cruise discussing an agreed upon topic somewhere...tom and jon reek of cofident positivity. ( in a good way- of course!!) 😁😁😃😄😍🤩
I love Jon so much, you can tell he is genuinely happy in this video, big fan of them both 💘
Everything about this clip is one one of raddest things ever on Colbert’s Late Show
The best part of the video is watching the drummer in the back.
Lol
Whose Michael Phelps does he play piano

Lmfao.!,,, yup
Jon Baptiste cannot be fucked with!
Neither can Jon Batiste.
TheNightShadow Fuck yeah!
he is amazing. is he from haiti?
New Orleans
Naw'lins.
When Simon said, "who's that?" I was like, "oohhhhhhh helllllll no!" I know of course it was all part of the act, but it was just funny to hear.
5:20 for the music, you aren't missing anything before
Might as well just skip to the end, not a very good improvisation by the actor.
+Erich von Manstein uh, cos ur a concert pianist with 10 consecutive wins in the international piano competition and has been accompanied by many famous orchestras from all over he world?
You don't need to be a professional pianist to judge some else's playing lol. He struggled to keep up improv-wise and beat-wise. Ofc no shame in that- I would certainly expect that a guy who got his master's from Juilliard would do better than Simon Helberh haha!
calebwilford thank you
Why am I seeing this now? UA-cam, it's your fault.
I want a full album from Jon Batiste and Simon Helberg.
Wouldn't that be nice !
Is anyone listening?
Possibly my favourite musical performance on this show...my only "complaint" is that it's not long enough. BRAVO!
Jon Baptiste is too hip for the room! Love him.
*Batiste
@@calisongbird colbert pronounces it wrong often. Ba-tiste not bap-tiste.
That's an American talk show for you - just when it gets interesting "WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate it when it becomes something that we fill up between two Ad breaks.
And people clapping on every beat of a jazz performance
Grammy Award winner Jon Baptiste! Well deserved! Handsome and talented!
5:30 "Juilliard", that's awesome man
He's such a varied and talented actor, doesn't get enough credit
Could there be an album of collabs between Jon Batiste and guests such as this? I get this version of Queen of the Night stuck in my head and it's hard to shake out!
That moment when you realize that they improvised something in 30 seconds far more musically creative then what most of the popular music "artists" of today takes months to conjure...
Classically trained musicians vs pop "musicians" in a nutshell.
@@noobestofdamall pull yourself together. It's like comparing kids football with liverpool
These things are usually pre-rehearsed. But your point is still valid
I don’t care if it was rehearsed, that is genius
You think pop music takes months to write?
They killed that! Jon Baptiste: you're amazing, bro!

^ Simons reaction always gets me😅👏🏼
One of my favorite videos of all time
That piano battle was seriously sexy.
Sexiness was off the damn charts 🥰🥰🥰🥰
this is such a crazy rendition, i wish i can hear a full version
I just love Jon Batiste! He is such a FAB person and a FAB talent. Watch American Symphony...
This must be before Jon Batiste became well-known, and got his Grammys. I'm thinking "Who's Simon Helberg?", and he's thinking, "Jon Batiste?" ! I wonder if he knew Jon would someday get all those Grammys this year!!!
- "How many times have you watched the final piano duetto?"
- "Yes."
I could listen to that though the whole hour. Made my day!
Ohhhh. I love Jon Batiste's piano playing ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍
I love at 6:10 you can see the drummer who plays with Jon all the time be in awe of his talent
1) We need the FULL song please!!!!
2) What an ALL-STAR BAND to see horns gingerly decide when to enter/ & that drummer pick up Baptiste's a capella cue (high hat only) perfectly! @6:27 & 6:38
I cannot belive I've stumbled across this AMAZING collaboration, 7 years after its performance, and after reading through all the command outright screams for a full version..... crickets. No colab or even a mention of it. This last minute, spur of the moment..... JAM needs to be recognized to its fullest!!!!! BZ to both artist.
*replay music part* Best thing I've ever heard! Awesome. More of this please!! Love how they took classical and made it so modern and jazzy.
How does someone put that much soul and swing, and dare I say funk into Mozart?
Now THAT was good. The piano convo went like:
Simon- Mr. Juilliard, do you know Queen of the Night?
Jon- Oh snap. Why, yes, I recognize that one
Simon- Ok then. Have you heard this part of it?
Jon- Hmm, don't you mean, THIS part? (Drummer reacts with stank face...audience joins in the clowning)
Omg that improv at the end!!!! I wanted more!
Man you can see them having fun and just having a good time playing. Like fuck yes
