    Assuming your transmission isn't actually over temperature, this is common issue with the starter. Specifically, the positive lead to the starter solenoid. Drop your skid plate and locate the starter underneath. Locate the yellow wire attached to the starter solenoid. Pinch, and pull to remove. Clean the connections or tighten the spade clip with pliers. Add dielectric grease to prevent corrosion. If that works, reassemble and be happy you saved a few hundred dollars.

    I had mine to the dealership (warranty) a3x and they finally said it was the airbag. Don't know how but never happened again.

    If you know for sure that your transmission is not really overheating. Its most likely the PCM giving a false reading, which I believe to be defined as temperature spike(which mine was doing) which can be caused by a PCM that is on its way out the door. If that same spike is elevated above set parameters, the code transmission overtemp will set. Also if it is the PCM then overtime the transmission overtemp will become more numerous.
    Nonetheless, after three years and numerous replacements of parts (gear shift module, engine to transmission wiring harness, trans filters and fluid, Starter, battery to alternator wiring harness and even the transmission) this gremlin is tackled!!!
    What really got me is when I replaced my transmission, my transmission over temp stayed. It was finally figured that the TCM be at fault, which is integral to the PCM. I changed out my PCM(125$) with one from a junkyard and then had it reflashed to match my VIN(75$). Voila!! No more trans over temp, no more delayed shifting, no more fans coming on real loud, and no more limp mode along wit having to restart the jeep to get the gear shift module to reflect [D] on the dash.
    Good Luck!

      took my commander to the transmission shop and they gave it a clean bill of health. I drove it 25 miles to a friends house with no problem. It set for 2 hours, then after driving it for 5 minutes..Transmission Over Temp again. D you think it best to just go straight for the PCM and replace it?

    • @2006JeepLimited57L
      @2006JeepLimited57L 8 років тому +3

      +Dantrag28 I can't tell you what you should do, but definitely look into it. I replaced everything from transmission sensors to the wiring harness to the electronic shift module.
      It wasn't until my Jeep just shut off on me while driving and would not crank back up that I realized via my handheld tuner that the tcm went out( I think I got a code that said unable to communicate with tcm).
      When it finally gave way on me the gauge cluster looked like this [P][R][N][D]. Thats the same look you get on the gauge cluster when you start the Jeep with the wiring harness unattached to the trans.
      One more thing I noticed that is that when it shut off on me while driving, I had to wait for the PCM to cool down a significant time before starting up again. I could drive a couple hundred feet before it would turn off again and then I would just repeat the process all over until I got home.
      In the end I replaced the PCM and BOOM no more trans overtemp light. Its been about 6 months and not a hint of coming back.
      FYI: The PCM if you order off line, is the easiest part to replace ever. Just give them your vin, and they will program it and update it to the latest calibrations and ship it to you. Once you get it, just disconnect the battery and plug and play, and reconnect the battery. GL!

      +2006JeepLimited57L haven't replaced it yet, but now that we are in 110+ out here in Az the problem is persisting more often. Was the dealership able to diagnose the problem even when the light was coming on frequently?

      If its not starting have the battery, alternator and starter tested (AutoZone will do it for free), if it is still not starting than try the Crank Position sensor(20$ part, 5 min to install). If its still not starting it then it is most like your PCM.
