- Graeme O'Neil takes a look at Auli'i Cravalho's reaction to Dwayne Johnson announcing that a live-action version of "Moana" is in the works, with him returning as Maui.
I love Dwayne and his enthusiasm for this story and this role. I had to stop reading the comments here. Look, if you all don’t like Dwayne, why are you watching this video? It looks like Cravalho may not be confirmed in the role although she is excited to be somewhere in the project. I am super thrilled to see Dwayne portray Maui in live action. Moana is a wonderful story. Watching his announcement brought me happy tears. Yay for artists/performers like Dwayne who have so much enthusiasm for sharing their culture this way and have genuine fun while doing it! More please!
i agree with you
Says a lot about a person when they make an entire movie announcement all about themselves.
Hes so narcissistic
I don't think so
You're JUST NOW noticing this ? He's famous for being a narcissist from WWF wrestling : "The Rock says this/that" "The Rock is gonna lay the Smackdown on your candy ass", "Can you smell what The Rock is cooking ?" That ain't new, he's been doing this for years. 😂
But he's actually a nice person.
And I’m sure if anyone else would be doing this promo they would do the same
All he said is that he would be reprising his role
Moana was the only movie I saw where Dwayne doesn’t play himself, so it makes sense why he makes it his whole personality lmfao
On June 12, 2024, it was announced that newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia from Sydney, Australia was cast as the titular character. Additional casting includes John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
Also feel weird that the Rock made it about himself.
Over the years I see the Rock is so prideful and has a thing to squeeze the islands and his culture into his most recent movies. I was so hyped about it at first. I’m from Guam which is in Micronesia we are neighbors with the Polynesian islands similar culture and pride. It’s so amazing to see our cultures in the big screen because it wasn’t really before. I see where it’s ridiculous how he made a 2 min video about himself but come on it’s the rock 😂 iykyk from wwe he’s so full of himself let the brown man talk 😂
Dwayne Johnson "me, me, me..."
I'm a little worried about the Auli'i portion of the news, the tweet was kinda vague but the description on youtube says "The new feature film is produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Productions, and Beau Flynn via Flynn Picture Co. Executive producers include Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 film, and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co." lower when talking about Dwayne it says "Johnson, who plans to return to the fictional world to set sail with Moana...", but for Auli'i it says "Native Hawaiian actor Cravalho, who helped shape Moana in the original film, said the beloved protagonist’s reach is sweeping. “She has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses,” she said. “Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring-to audiences around the world, to me and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I’m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way.”" I really hope she reprises the role but I'm not positive whether she is or not based on that blurb.
Dwayne hasn't aged out of his character but she might have. Maybe she is coming back as the mother or they make Moana older? It's a difficult call but if she is an executive producer they are letting her have a voice in the decision
@@AA-mz3ig IMHO, she could definitely still play the character, she was just in a movie playing a high school cheerleader that came out on Hulu a few months ago
She's not reprising the role, she's a producer on the remake but not acting in it
@@AA-mz3iglol she's 22 no way is she old enough to play Moana's mother! She's still being cast as teenagers (she's in the new Mean Girls remake). She isn't acting in the Moana remake though.

Auli'i isn't playing Moana in the remake, she's a producer on it
Before I hold on to this, I’m looking forward to see what Disney is going to be doing with Lilo and Stitch. Sadly just saw the announcement that Auli’i (who I was holding out to play Nani) won’t be able to due to scheduling conflicts with Mean Girls: The Musical. Stitch is my absolute favorite Disney movie so we’ll see how they go with it. They just announced new coming little girl was cast as Lilo so… 🤔
Maaaaybe he wasn't allowed to mention anyone else until they were confirmed? Idk trying to look outside the box.🤔
I am happy to hear that Auli'i Cravalho will be back! Over the past week, I have been seeing posts about Zendaya taking that role so it had me wondering what happen to Cravaho? I have nothing against Zendaya and I think she could do it if Cravalho could not!
A truly clueless video. Many people pointed out the obviously public fact that Disney has not decided who will play Moana. As Dwayne said, there is lots of work yet to be done which obviously includes casting. Dwayne was only allowed to state things that are already decided and set in stone. In other words, he was only allowed to talk about himself since the other decisions have yet to be made. Its great that he was able to share his genuine enthusiasm. Thanks Dwayne! Clearly he is perfect for the role, so that is a no brainer (which implies that even the brainless haters should get it ) ! Moana is far more difficult to cast (one intriguing possibility would be Zendaya with Cravalho's voice). The success or failure will hinge on the casting of Moana. I'm hoping Cravalho will at least dub someone's singing. Patience everyone !
Yessss I love that idea! They need to keep all the same cast they’re able to! That’s one of my biggest issues with the Lion King remake, it’s not like they actually need to look like the characters. It wasn’t necessarily the speaking voices as much as the singing and music in general. I very much disliked the Lion King remake and I’m a bit anxious I’ll be disappointed with the Little Mermaid as well. My two favorites! I’m honestly getting a little sick of these remakes but it would be a breath of fresh air as far as remakes go to use the original cast! 🤞❤
Sure, "The Lion King" was a bunch of animals, but it was quite ridiculous that a story set in Africa featured mostly white actors voicing the roles. It's quite ironic that you say it'll be a breath of fresh air (which is an analogy or metaphor for "new") if it actually has no fresh air. LOL.
@@GraemeONeil well they are animals, i dont think race should matter for well animals
This will work ONLY if they give it a time lapse where Moana is grown up
I disagree. The person playing her is VERY young still. Also the character Moana doesn't look like a PRETEEN 😂 I think they make them kind of hard to pinpoint their age on purpose. Honestly all the modern Disney princesses are on average 16 and up. Ariel definitely looked older than 16. Rapunzel is 18. Never did I really think about Moana's age. All she needs to be is semi young and the chief's daughter. Just like in Aladin, princess jasmines age doesn't really matter except she needs to marry someone by her 18th birthday but they could have easily just changed the rules. Honeslty I don't even remember them bringing up princess jasmines age in the love action 🤔 and the person who played her looks amazing but I'm sure they're older than the person playing Moana. Emma Watson wasn't a teenager when she played Belle either. Honestly I'm more worried about how buff they gotta make the Rock 😂 Maui's proportions are off the charts haha
This one better be good
Have a bit of grace and think that maybe, just maybe he was asked not to mention her because either she didn't want to mention it, contract details were being hashed out at the filming of his announcement or a myriad of other reasons that we might never know about. Let's spread a little positivity ❤❤
Graeme - You may be jumping the gun. If you look at the announcement from Disney, it doesn't say that Auli'i Cravalho will be back as that character; only that she will be a producer on the film. Perhaps the casting decision has yet to be made.
yup I did notice how it was worded, but the wording is the same for Dwayne, and he will be playing the role. And since I posted this segment, I'm noticing the sentiment on social media seems to be the same as mine. If they were possibly thinking otherwise, Disney is being told that Auli'i is essential to Moana. If the age is an issue, as Idina Menzel said, if they can deage Robert DeNiro by 40-50 years in "The Irishman" (and did the same for Harrison Ford in the upcoming Indiana Jones), they can knock a few years off Auli'i with CGI.
@@GraemeONeil She literally doesn’t even look that old. She’s only 22 🤦🏻♂️ She looked so nice as Ariel
@@jacobsed6665 EXACTLY. The character Moana doesn't look like a PRETEEN 😂 I think the animators make it kinda of hard to pinpoint their exact age on purpose to a larger appeal of kids and young adults. Honestly all the modern Disney princesses are 16 and up. Ariel definitely looked older than 16. Rapunzel is 18. Never did I really think about moanas age. All she needs to be is semi young and the chief's daughter. Just like in Aladin, princess Jasmine's age doesn't really matter except she needs to marry someone by her 18th birthday but they could have easily just changed the rules. Honeslty I don't even remember them bringing up princess jasmines age in the love action 🤔 and the person who played her looks amazing but I'm sure they're older than the person playing Moana. Emma Watson wasn't a teenager when she played Belle either.
Yeah completely jumping the gun! Auli'i announced that she wanted to give another actress a chance to play the role.
“He is more focussed about himself”
Yeah that is his middle name.
Live action version agad when the movie is not even 10 yrs old? 🤷♂
Hollywood is having a super hero movie fatigue and no new fresh ideas? Its time VGM goes bigtime!
I’m 💯 % gonna watch the live action Moana remake. Moana is my favorite Princess and would love her both live action and beautiful original animation.
Why did she have to go and take on the feminist mantle? 🤦♂️ she was such a beautiful young lady. Smh
Who wants to bet that Auli'I Cravalho will probably be casted as Te Fiti as some executive will probably think that Auli'l will be too "long in the tooth" by the time principal photography begins.
People complain about everything 🙄
Um, we absolutely have rights to be one 😂
Love it ❤❤
This just proves how wrong Disney remakes are. They used to say oh we're remaking the films to address problems with the original films and to a new generation of children.....
To this I say bullsh*t especially after this announcement.
Moana was only released in 2016/17 so not that long ago 🙄. So the whole we need to address old school problems hasnt got a leg to stand on here.
It feels like Disney basically wants to faze out their animation studio, unless your Frozen.
That's it I'm done with Disney for a while.
Oh and they're making Lilo and Stitch remake as well 😥😥
The only reason for the house of mouse to make remakes of the older movies is rights renewal.
This is more of johnsons own project work like black adam.
It’s sad Auli’i wasn’t able to branch out and build a career out of Moana. She’s very beautiful and talented…
She’s about to be in the new Mean Girls musical film as Janis
@@lonellfletcher Really? Not sure how fitting that role is for her… she seems more of a Cady or Karen
She's been in loads of stuff she was just in a popular Amazon Prime series The Power and she's been in several teen movies and stage shows
sadly, auli'i is not going to be reprising the role, as she said in one of her instagram posts, that she is the executive producer of the live action film, and will not be playing moana herself😭
Seriously wtf? Moana was a great movie. It has not be long enough to make a remake. I hope it bombs in the basis of this. And as for Dwayne? He is so narcissistic. He’s acting like he’s the main character when he’s not. And they could’ve give this opportunity to new Polynesian actors? This is so strange. I feel children will still prefer the animated version. The reason why live action remakes are successful is because they bank on the nostalgia of 80s and 90s kids who are now adults. Disney is just actively ruining its brand at this point.
waaaa 😢
“Reimagining” 🙄 of course it is.
She's not reprising the role, she's going to be a producer
They’re making a live action princess and the frog and they better pick a white actress to play Tiana and I don’t want to hear a PEEP out of you people calling people racist for not liking live action little mermaid.
Jacob, if you're going to claim that you aren't ignorant, you need to stop ignoring that it has been explained to you multiple times why your argument is invalid.
@@GraemeONeil It is a double standard for people who loved race swapping Ariel to be upset if they make Tiana white. And to be honest, I don’t even want to see a white Tiana, I like the black Tiana AS SHE WAS IN THE CARTOON, just like the original red haired Ariel.
@@jacobsed6665 you know Ariel is Italian or Danish not White so shut your mouth .
@@jacobsed6665 Listen, there have been so many white Disney princesses that make your argument extremely arrogant and ignorant. It was just a way of being more inclusive and progress away from a time when anyone who was not white was immediatly turned away from audtioning for roles in movies and theatre.
Also, don't pretend as if white people have never done the same. Remember that fiasco that went on when they picked a white actress to play a CLEARLY native american looking character in the movie Pan? Yeah, that happened.
Don't worry. Your precious race is not to completely die out just for simply changing the races of characters. And while we are at it, it is racist in itself to recognize an actress/actor simply based on their race rather than their talent. Halle has the perfect voice for Ariel.
Get. Over. It.
3:20 - 3:24
yes.
smh
They should cast a Filipino actress
I didn’t know Moana was Filipino I thought she was from a Polynesian island
Nah she could cast an Chinese actress lol
Na Indian is better
Dwayne needs to stop. I can't take seeing him EVERYWHERE. And he really, really got egotistical lately. I'm waiting until a comedian makes fun of him or his wife in front of him, and he gets up on stage like someone else did in the past. Then, and only then, will there be silence from Dwayne. Or if he suffers 4 commercial flops in a row. Let's see.
Dwayne obviously doesn’t want to share the limelight… unless you’re Henry Cavill - lol
Given their recent trends, how is Disney going to ‘wokify’ this live adaptation?
Not sure this is needed… next thing you know they’re going to do a ‘live-action’ CGI of Zootopia, like they did Lion King.
😮😊
Let’s hope they don’t race swapped Moana and being woke again
how… would they do that.
she might have a disability 🙄🙄
Are they going to get a white girl to play Moana? #inclusivity
These movies are crap.
Who needs this stop please stop it
I for one am *excited* hopefully 🙏 the live action adaptation shall be good 🤞...
@@quinetasticIt won't
Are they going to pick a Chinese person to play Moana?
Here comes the clown The Rock to ruin another franchise.
He is doing it for his grandpa quit being salty and bitter😂😂😂
After Disney completely RUINED The Little Mermaid with its casting choice, I am genuinely no longer excited for them at all. This seems like a very weird cash grab and I don’t think it will do well at the box office. Kids are used the the animated version and it has not been long enough to do a live action.
Ruined, heh?
Ruined? 👀
@@lonellfletcher I said what I said
Then cast some white woman who can't sing lol
