  • Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot keep telling the press how horrible the old Snow White was. According to them, the new Snow White is a girl boss that doesn't need a man to save her. Great.

i dont get why they are so against the idea of Snow White being saved? As a kid, I used to think that the moral of the story was that help can come from anywhere and anyone (the hunter who let her flee, the 7 caring dwarfs, and the prince) and that there’s hope for her to be loved sincerely despite her background. I also admire her tenderness! To stay kind, despite living in an abusive environment growing up IS strength in itself.

It's been a minute since I've seen the animated version but I really don't recall the original being a "girl power" film.
If Disney wanted a movie like that - again - why didn't they just write an original script instead of literally obliterating a film that is so iconic and classic?
And then the Writer's Guild goes on strike...derp!

I think that the saddest thing about this remake is that I already thought Snow White was one of the strongest princesses - she was forced to flee her home and she was able to find a place to live and work and be fulfilled all by herself, and she was still joyful. It's a strength that I think is overlooked

As a kid, snow white was one of my favourite princesses. I literally saw beauty in her SNOW WHITE skin and accentuated red lips and dark raven hair. That is what made her iconic. That blue and yellow dress is what made her iconic. The fact that she was treated like a queen by 7 men and was able to live comfortably is what made her iconic as the very first Disney princess. To clarify, I'm brown. As a kid I never saw skin colour and I just thought that snow white was so beautiful with the way that she was. Congrats for being THE Snow White!
I’m reminded of my favourite read of last year, “Piranesi” by Susanna Clarke. One of the reasons why it was so memorable is because the protagonist has the qualities the original Snow White does: he’s pure, kind, generous… naïve, yes, but always seeing the good in the world and giving it his best in return. It was so refreshing to follow a hero that’s not the smug, snarky, don’t-need-nobody types with chips on their shoulders we see all the time nowadays.

Very few movies had the female as the lead role during that time period, much less had them actually want to be independent and decide to run away like Snow White did, and want to be better for herself. The seven dwarves all looked up to her and saw her courage and admired her and most were men. She loved the prince yes, but she was still a strong independent woman that just wanted to be free and wanted to be with someone who she loved, who just so happened to be a prince.

    Okay but
I’m really close to someone who has a friend who was in the new hunger games movie and has met Rachel irl. According to both of them, Rachel is one of the sweetest and nicest people in Hollywood you can meet. Normally interviewers tend to mix up what you’ve said when being interviewed (for example they change an answer for one question to another to make it sound different) and the person I’m close to knows this because she records her interviews on her phone so if they scramble her words she can show them the real thing. According to her friend, it was her first movie and Rachel was being really nice to her for no reason at all and it’s something she will never forget. Of course I could have misheard but what the media tend to do is scramble things up to create drama. And it’s not Rachel’s fault that Disney cast her or changed the plot, but people are coming after Rachel because she’s repeating what the company have done or the decisions the company have made. And I’m aware the drama has died down now but just keep that in mind. Thank you

The thing that nobody talks about is that a remake of the Snow White story where the main character is pretty independent, learns to be a fighter from the seven dwarfs while falling in love in a healthy manner with the prince is already done. It stars Lilly Collins and I think it is the best combo of non-toxic feminism and love. Disney should take lessons from that film!
It is time we teach young girls that you can be an accomplished lady while perusing a romantic relationship. We need beautiful couples as models for our kids too!
I would love to see Brett react to it, is my favourite!

Rachel Zegler is the same actress who portrayed Maria in “West Side Story”. A character who is infamous for being an idiot, and a bad role model for girls. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was updated countless times, even by Disney themselves. This just sounds like a knockoff of things like “Once Upon a Time”. Audiences are sick and tired reimagined fairytales. Also, instead of removing the dwarfs, the remake could have easily made one of the dwarfs the love interest. That would have been much more progressive than faux-girlbossing.

And they somehow put rachel as one of their pr team and made it worse with her attitudes this in the past few weeks. She's been talking about inclusivities but keeping out the fact that they actually rolled out the real dwarf actors from the movie.
Also the way she talked about how she should get paid more for playing and dressing up as one of the iconic disney princess, idk... it somehow she didn't even thinked about people who worked at the Disneyland dresses as Disney's characters for hours, months and years. I think they deserves to get paid more for the roles instead of her. And her being completely aggresive and demanding such a thing without even thinking, is actually hilarious to me. Like she definitely knows that the movie won't get enough audience so she (likes it or not) has to rely on the producers and the studios to get paid.
I rarely seen actors doing a reboot project, talked to every single interviews bragging about how bad the original was. Halle didn't even mentioned how bad and how not diverse the old little mermaid was. If any, i believed it's not that aggresive anyway.

I’m hardly halfway through this video and this is already giving me so much inspiration for my writing. I’ve noticed over my years of writing female characters (which tbh it’s hard for me to write female characters) most of them end up being nosy, and a little too overly strong, independent, girlboss-like women. (Not all of them, mind you. How I miss the days when I was a kid and whether or not a person was strong/manipulative had to do with whether or not I liked them as a person lololololllll.)
But anyway, recently I’ve been writing a character who isn’t really the stereotypical strong girlboss of modern days. She’s wanted romance and to have kids, but she’s had to deal with a terrible thing she did and the fear, guilt, and pain that come with that. She’s been put in positions where she’s had to take the lead and she does it just fine (honestly I bet she surprised herself a few times), but at the end of the day, that’s not the life she really wants.
Sorry to write out a long paragraph-this vid is just reminding me of how much fun I’ve had writing that character and letting her pursue a path that isn’t necessarily the ideal in our modern society’s eyes, yet is what *she* wants.
Any fellow writers out there, be the change you want to see in the world! Learn from the mistakes of others and learn how to pick up and properly use the writing tools that others are putting down!

Yes, i fully agree with your points, Brett!
This new version of Snow White reminds me of my own fairy tale I've wrote to my husband a few years ago. It's my modern "the little mermaid", but it's a whole different story with new names, I just took the idea of how a mermaid princess can fall in love with a human prince. What's so modern about my tale is the rediscovering the meaning and beauty of finding a true love (because, yes, it's about me and my husband). My mermaid princess is not little anymore, she tries very hard to be strong and independent woman, a powerful sorceress (and she doesn't believe in romantic love because she's already been heartbroken...). Her stepmother witch exploits these wishes for her own evil purposes but, due to fateful coincidences, the human prince gets involved in these plans. My prince is strong, smart, respectful, and kind person, he talks with the princess sincerely and nicely (and she treats him the same, too) and, consequently, she grows fond of him, even though the witch ordered her to betray him. The princess finds support in the prince and starts to realize that she can have that inner power she seeks, she just needs to believe in herself more, so she refuses to become a traitor and obey the evil witch. This leads to a culmination when my mermaid had to be saved by the prince and he does that because he loves her and cares about her. And, of course, they lived happily ever after. And I live happily with my husband so far. 🥰
My fairy tale is a bit silly, not everything makes sense there, especially the plot events, that's why I won't post it anywhere. But from psychological perspective it feels quite realistic. Even if I'd have courage to post it, there is a lot of stuff that might trigger modern society and I'd be mostly accused of being a 1) racist and 2) sexist.
    1) Racist, because none of my protagonists or antagonists are black. Although, my prince is quite tanned and my princess has a pale blue skin because she's a mermaid. Is this such a big problem that I just didn't feel like creating a character that's has a black skin or any other color?
    2) Sexist, because my tale is basically a caricature of toxic feminism. My female protagonist strives to be "a girl boss who needs no man" but faces her own vunerability, finds support in romantic love, and, oh no, has to be saved by a strong man. Is that such a tragedy that my princess cannot save herself and has to rely on the prince? Everyone has insecurities, can be weak sometimes, and need help from the others, regardless of their sex, right? I just wanted to express that there's nothing wrong with being like that even if you actually are a gentle feminine lady who feels safe in the arms of a strong masculine man.
    Well, thanks for reading!

Also side note, Snow White is a princess. Which means she will one day be Queen. In the original Disney movie the Evil Queen had no King, so in theory Snow White could actually become a Queen but she will rule with love and genuine kindness instead of vanity and low cunning. Probably another reason Snow White was sent to be not-alived by the Huntsman, because the Queen could very well want the throne for herself.
