Hi Lauren, I'm 72 years old and have downloaded your free beginner's course. I have been using it for about a month. I also watch your other videos on UA-cam for on-going encouragement. I am a slow learner. Your advice about not worrying about being perfect is great for me. I really enjoy playing. Thanks so much.
I’m 74 years old, bought my first guitar just after Christmas, so 4 months ago, I have lessons with a very patient teacher who understands my awkwardness. I practice as much as I can at home, even copied or downloaded a few 3 chord (G D & C) songs. Your video has helped so much, I thank you for that, now I just need to practice your ‘thumb thing’, thanks for sharing your experience, Ron.
I'm an old beginner (61 years old) and I have been learning for 6 months. You have definitely the best guitar course on internet. Exactly what I need. Thanks ! Greetings from France.
Thank you so very much for your hard work and making so much content available for us poor seniors living on a$1200 a month fixed income. God bless you!
I have watched so videos on this topic Lauren, and your teaching methods have resonated the best with me. I never thought about relaxing my arm and the purpose of our thumbs. So thank you.
This was an excellent lesson, Lauren... I've been playing guitar for two decades and have taught many students. I was having trouble with one of my students, and looked for a lesson to give me some tips on helping him out. This was just perfect... you really nailed all the details. Awesome! 🙂
Not a beginner here, and I don't want to confuse the issue (and muscle memory for chord shapes is absolutely essential), but I did the C-G hop for years (and years!) until ...... I learned Gadd9! Ring finger on G of low E, pinky on G of high E. Helpful for getting used to using the pinky finger, too. If I'm playing a chord progression with C-G changes, I automatically opt for the Gadd9 there. Works great for quick, short G changes, too. My two cents worth, if it helps. Keep up your great teaching videos! They've been helpful! 🎶😊
Wow! You covered so much. Being a beginner so much to learn.. My 3rd attempt to learn guitar. Now 70. This is where I got discouraged each time. Cord changing. Great info, detailed instructions for practice. Now I’m motivated because you gave me steps to get further into developing skills Thank you
Hi Lauren, this 2 finger easy C cord is fantastic, I am 62years old and believe me it's helping me so much. Thanks for all the lessons I am really enjoying them. Regards Conway. Durban South Africa.
Thank you Lauren, you're the most amazing teacher here on UA-cam. I'm a ukulele player and I just got my first acoustic guitar for Christmas. Honestly I have to say that I'm struggling to find a method to follow, but I've recently bumped into your channel and it's so helpful ❤
OMG this video came at the perfect time. I'm starting to hate practicing. This C-G and D is driving me nuts. But just like your finger exercises, I think this is what I need. BTW, Someone also told me to gently brace the guitar with my strumming elbow. Not hard, just enough to take the strain from my fretting hand thumb. So now my thumb is used to steady my hand, but not to clamp the strings. My thumb never puts pressure on the neck unless I'm trying to make a barre chord. That's when everything falls apart lol.
i have had a guitar for many years but never knew how to play chords,i recently got it out and found your site...and i can now play the em and d chord..and im 63yr old..
Been following your videos for a while now learning a bit quiet well. Struggled with my cousin's guitar which was huge, called a dreadnought i believe and heavy lol. I finally got an electric guitar im comfortable with. And have just signed for 14 day course. Though im excited to do beggings workshop and more. You teach so well and have learnt so much already from your UA-cam videos 🙂.
Hi Lauren, I understand why you have suggested placing the ring finger first when switching from G to C. However, I am in the habit of placing the index finger first and third finger last. I am usually left-handed but play guitar right-handed. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it, but regardless, do you recommend I try to change my habit to placing third finger first on C chord? I still consider myself mostly a beginner. Thanks!
thanks, helped a lot I didn't even realize that relaxation was the key. I have been playing for a couple years and had to go back and retool my technique as i never really learned any techniques in the first place i just started playing off of UA-cam videos
Lauren, this is a GREAT video! I’m a pianist and do this sort of practicing all the time, the thing is I didn’t know how to apply it to guitar( I’m a beginner). Do you have a video on how to jump to Barr chords?
Greetings and thank you for this video, I used to be able to fly all over these chords, including F, and minor, but have all the "itisisis ,rhumboid going on, generally a capo is recommended, but I have trouble grasping and operating capo. I have more difficulty with the change between c and f, d minor, but what's funny is the key of f docent bother me, again thanks for this video, I was upset at myself over it. A blessed day to everyone!
P.S. I’m working on Bm right now. I didn’t think any chord could give me worse fits than F, but here’s Bm. Thanks for the refresher on muscle memory. I’m gonna do it.❤️😁
The thumb, when I place it in the right spot I hit the high E string. I mute the low E with my C chord shape ring finger. Is that bad? I'm surely getting it eventually.... I also use the full 4 finger c chord. It's just how I learned on my own. Like you said Lauren, it's just repetitive practice and technique!! TY for your video especially THIS TOPIC C TO G!! I gotta go practice now LOL! My technique is bad! lol
This is just a question that I've always had. From playing golf and other sports. From the golf swing and carrying the ball. Im used to keeping my left arm close or tucked into my left side. I just really don't know how far my arm needs to extend out. You talk about in this session about arm fatigue. I was just wondering. If you had a good tip on this. Thanks
Need this badly, as a grandpa beginner and seems to work, although I have to put in a lot more effort into it. Thank you! BTW Love that Gretsch on the wall.
I love when you say, “It takes years.” Because I have literally been working on “Dust In The Wind” by Kansas for YEARS & I still make mistakes. & it makes me feel like something’s wrong with me.🤦🏽♀️❤️
This a very helpful lesson Lauren! I have been practicing this lately and the one thing that hinders me is pain on my forearm, and I have to stop and flex frequently. I start with my 3rd finger also and it helps me to place the G and C better (I have to kind of lean towards the neck of my guitar to form the C though). Another great and helpful lesson: you are TRULY THE BEST GUITAR TEACHER around today Lauren TWO THUMBS UP !! (Love the 'practice imperfectly' tip also!)
What do you think of the trick Rikki Lindhome uses in her "Garfunkel and Oates" ditties: Lifting the index finger, moving the middle two fingers up together and dropping the pinkie. Making a three finger G Chord with an alternate choice of which three fingers to use.
Thank you! I bought a Yamaha CGS 102A guitar (3/4 size). Much easier but still a stretch for some basic chords. So I play simplified chords when I need to. Terrific videos. Best regards
I learned C to G very early in my playing (49 years ago). Even though I didn’t play guitar for nearly 46 years, my muscles remembered. Now, transitioning from just about any open chord to Bm is a real challenge.
Lately I’ve been running a metronome at half time. I hit G and mute, transition to C shape as quickly as I can, then play C according to the metronome count. I do that back and forth for about 10 minutes. I do the same with other chord changes.
Hi Lauren thank you for sharing your knowledge ...and I would like to donate through Patreon like I did before...but Paypal is not available anymore ...so.... can you tell me any other safe way to do it !! cheers
I never thought about using a metronome to practice switching chords! Also, since you said 100 BMP is kinda slow for you, what BPM would actually give you a little bit of a challenge?
Here is what helped me learn the 3-finger G open chord shape. You can do it even without a guitar. With an open hand and straight fingers, bend your ring finger, then also bend your index and ring fingers. Make them a little bit parallel to your palm. There is your G chord shape. With practice, you can speed up the shape and use it with chord changes. With C chord shape, it's like your answering a telephone. I tried forming that C chape like answering a telephone without a guitar. I noticed also that changing between C and G chord is easier if you positioned your guitar a classical like angle
So i keep coming back to this video and studying your fret hand and doing this exercise. I can literally go from C to G to Am without looking at the guitar, but the transition isnt smooth. I spent hours yesterday going from C to G to Am (tryimg to learn Simple man) and i woke up this morning with my finger tips shredded 😂😂. I think i took an 1/8 of an inch of meat off my finger tips 😂. Missing part of my finger tips this morning i found my hand naturally landing on C and Am. G i can also land without looking for the most part, but dang C to G is really difficult for me. I need to find a teacher in the upstate NY area that i can spend an hour a week with.

50 years ago when I was learning I stopped playing G that way. Hold C then lift fingers 2 & 3 up to G and your little finger is already hovering over the 3rd fret 1st string. (it gets stronger quickly) I never understood why people always play G the way you are showing. Same with Em I bet you all use fingers 1 & 2 for Em you should use fingers 2 & 3 as if you were playing E but don't use the 1st finger
I'm learning to play guitar and still struggle with going from one chord to another. My worst chord is probably the Bm7, I think once I couldn't get one string to come out literally all of them were muted lol.
I've played for years using just a three-fingered G. Never had a problem with that C to G switch. And then I started trying to always play that 4-fingered G. My fingers get all tied up in knots like a beginner... 😏😏😏
Whenever I practice and my wife is in the same room it screws up my courage to practice and nvm I just get pissed and put my guitar away. What a brilliant idea with forming the G chord. That works. Thank you.
if you make the G chord with your 2nd, 3rd, & 4th fingers it`s easier from G to C . It also works good from G to G7
