3 Exercises To Fix Your Chord-Switching Problems Fast!

  • Today's question is from Pedro he says, "I know many chord shapes but when I try to play along to a song, I can't switch through them fast enough."
    ---
In the lesson, I mention a few things:
First, if you'd like to ask a question, let me know in the comments below or email me directly: community@goodguitarist.com
If you need more help with the fundamentals, I have a few resources you can check out:
    FREE MINI-COURSE: goodguitarist....
PREMIUM BEGINNER'S COURSE (master the basics!): goodguitarist....
    ---
To help him (and everyone else struggling to get past this "roadblock") I have three exercises that I use with my students. These exercises will build up two important skills:
The first is memorizing your chord shapes. Everyone THINKS they have them memorized but I'm going to show you a little test that might have you thinking again! You might be able to make the shape but have you really memorized it?! That's what we'll find out! (and I have an exercise that will FIX this instantly!)
The next skill is being able to switch between any two particular chords. Usually people think you just have to be able to switch from any chord to any other chord right away, but it's actually a bit more of a methodical, slower process. You need to LEARN to switch from E to A from G to A from D to A...
So if you have an issue with chord switching, hopefully this'll fix you right up!
    'Til next time!

Hey James, I just wanted to give you a big THANK YOU
for the "lap slap" technique. I'm 65 years old and have been learning guitar from your You Tube channel for about 18 months and just now found this video. I'm at the point where I know many chord shapes and can finger them without looking at a diagram but my switches were painfully slow and I just wasn't getting any faster at them. I've been doing these exercises for about 2 weeks and the results are dramatic. Don't get me wrong , I'm still slow but I definitely see much faster switches. Thanks again!!

if you use your pinky for A in Asus2, then the transition would be a lot quicker and smoother. in addition, playing E and A for Asus2 using pinky and ring fingers allows you to bar it as well. not sure if this alternate fingering is considered advanced or not, but i think it'd be a lot more productive to transition using pinky because you're knocking two birds with one stone
