3 Exercises To Fix Your Chord-Switching Problems Fast!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Today's question is from Pedro he says, "I know many chord shapes but when I try to play along to a song, I can't switch through them fast enough."
---
In the lesson, I mention a few things:
First, if you'd like to ask a question, let me know in the comments below or email me directly: community@goodguitarist.com
If you need more help with the fundamentals, I have a few resources you can check out:

To help him (and everyone else struggling to get past this "roadblock") I have three exercises that I use with my students. These exercises will build up two important skills:
The first is memorizing your chord shapes. Everyone THINKS they have them memorized but I'm going to show you a little test that might have you thinking again! You might be able to make the shape but have you really memorized it?! That's what we'll find out! (and I have an exercise that will FIX this instantly!)
The next skill is being able to switch between any two particular chords. Usually people think you just have to be able to switch from any chord to any other chord right away, but it's actually a bit more of a methodical, slower process. You need to LEARN to switch from E to A from G to A from D to A...
So if you have an issue with chord switching, hopefully this'll fix you right up!
'Til next time!

I'm trying to switch between an altered version of d major 7 straight to F# minor 9 to play a chon song called sleepy tea and it's a pain so far lol
I can switch chords fast to go along with a song but there's like, gaps of silence between them
Same here
u can add fillers between them, like a simple U-D, OR an U-chuck
Same
Guys i have watched all videos for learning it doesn't help me at all and now i ma thinking of learning it from a guitarist or can someone suggest me something plz
@Santosh mahapatra thanks 😊
I want to switch between four chords in less than 1.5 seconds
0 to 60 in 1.5!
Try it with a crazily paced metronome or increase the speed until it is crazily paced.

no problem make a chord and move it up the fret board you will make abcdefg

There is no secret. Just practice practice practice . Change between the chords for 100 time .
There's a lot of mental block involved, especially for strongly right-handed people.
yeah i always keep practicing everyday and i noticed that i can already switch a chord easily you're right. there is no secret to be good.😊 btw i started 10 months ago so im really proud of it hehe
i spent months and months trying to switch between F barred chords and still not able to switch smoothly
@@hoangduong4981 Practice from C to F or any chords to F very slowy. You need to position each finger before you press the string do it slowly and do it right because you need to establish that core memory.
@@hoangduong4981 my friend took 1 years to master the barre chords lol
Playing for almost a year and still my chord switching wasn't that fluid so the last strum before the chord change ends up getting sound muted and it's fucking irritating that it's almost a year and I can't execute that properly😡. Its frustrating.
8:35 damn.. Thats me
Har3drewX Kait me too
And here i am.. 🙋🏻♂️
Thats also me lmao
Mee too fr😂
Same here. And I have my first beginners recital Sunday 🤦🏾♀️!
The chord + slap + chord method was truly amazing. Thank you! Such a simple little exercise but it works wonders! Great stuff as always!
Yup! And without the strum, I can practice in silence at night.
My 5 year old son came in the guitar room and started slapping my lap also. “daddy, what are you doing?" He said and joined in the slapping. lol. Thanks for giving me a great moment with my son in addition to leaning guitar.
That’s sweet 🙂
"daddy, what are you doing?"( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) looks suspicious lmao

Lol great comment
Some teachers don't teach exercises and that makes it difficult to learn . They expect u to play just by watching them play... these exercises u have shown are great and i believe it will help every beginner change chords faster....
I kept on slapping my lap and forgot to strum
Lol😂😂
🤣
I was like... E.... A sports its in the game
James,
Not the first time I have said this but it bears repeating. You have a terrific style of teaching: patient, clear and encouraging. Thank you so much.
2 days into this exercise and my Lap just ran away from me. My fingers are the next.
Am I the only one who find C to be the hardest key to do properly
THANK YOU
Bruvvvv im having a hardtime switching my fingers to G and C
I made my switch faster by playing G with the 2rd 3rd and 4th Finger rather than 123
I cant believe this dude got me to slap my thighs 20 times 😳
Haha
Have really been wanting to become a great guitarist but I find it difficult to change the strumming pattern, what can I do?
Your teaching is very useful. I have one doubt while practising chord shifting shall I look the fret board or from the beginning itself should I train myself without looking the fret board which is the correct method pls guide me Thank you brother
Dude, I wish I could express how helpful this was. So clear and concise and you have a nice, calming voice.
I just started learning guitar yesterday, and im really struglling with changing from G to C. Hopefully this'll help:)
Just started leaning to play about a month ago and this so far was hands down the the most helpful video ive seen so far, thank you good sir 😁🎸 🎶
My finger always cramp when i play it. Hence, always give up(but always pick it up back after a few month😂)
your voice is so soothing and i love these tips! thank you
Dude, I love the lap slap technique hahaha
Thanks for the tips!
I've watched a lot of videos on this topic but yours is outstanding! Thank you very much!
Memorize
Knowing the cord shape
Are really great tips🎉
Hi my d chord sounds so low when I play it, and there is this device connected to my guitar it tells me if the tuning is correct. And according to the device, it is. What’s wrong with my d chord?
Thank you. Of all the chord exercise videos on UA-cam, this one has helped the most. It’s really made a difference
A very creative idea with the lap distraction as a memory trainer. I will give it a go. C to F or G is always messy though.
I agree. Been working on F to G today. That’s a pain.
Hey James, I just wanted to give you a big THANK YOU
for the "lap slap" technique. I'm 65 years old and have been learning guitar from your You Tube channel for about 18 months and just now found this video. I'm at the point where I know many chord shapes and can finger them without looking at a diagram but my switches were painfully slow and I just wasn't getting any faster at them. I've been doing these exercises for about 2 weeks and the results are dramatic. Don't get me wrong , I'm still slow but I definitely see much faster switches. Thanks again!!
Practiced for two days and I finally switch fast enough
Thanks for the switching technique.
It's a good lesson to learn with.
I need to switch between G chord and C chord ... Can you tell me a thumb rule for that ... !!!?
Kamalkant Moharana any progress after 4 months ??
Now I’ve got raw fingers and a red leg but it did help lol
Should I slap my face to learn quicker?
bro 💀💀
One of the best explanation for chord switch thanks.
One of the best guitar teachers of all time. Will be doing these exercises to my guitar warm-up everyday 🎸🎶
Rock on!
God damn the Headstock on those Crafter are beautiful, i have one too 👀
great video man... do you have any tips or exercises for changing between melodic licks and chords? I'm playing some Hendrix stuff and he does that all the time.
MY mood in practicing Switching from Chord to Chord start from 8:36............

And then put the metronome on 40 bpm and I learn rhythm and timing as well.
Wanted to thank you for taking the time to do this 🙏

This was great! Thank you providing this video! Learning the guitar has been a challenge, but this video has helped to make things a bit easier.
I wish to see it a year ago, when I had some difficulties with chord-switching... it's cool anyway, thanks for your job!
Yeah, totally, this is stuff I wish I knew when I was starting, too. haha. Enjoy! - James
@@Good_Guitarist lol I'm lucky I'm learning it at right time. Thanks for for your tutorial. Love from India
playing a song in real-time, if one chord is four beats do I take the fourth beat to switch with a "dead strum"? I can do it but I hate the sound of strumming open strings between chords
That was very helpful. Can I slap my sons lap instead?
hey man i can switch but my fingers dont switch simultaneously, they fall one after another, how do i overcome this?
Make your fingers learn the shape. Basically you must practice your muscle memory. Play the chord, then lift your fingers from the fretboard holding the same chord shape, then put all fingers together back on the fretboard at the same time while holding the same shape. Repeat.
@@billboardbraggins1443 thanks
@@Ryan-jz5kr You're welcome.
I’m being dead ass rn I have been playing guitar for 2 months about and I keep missing the chord changes by like 1 string or I would be to high on the fret and I never knew why I did that chord exercise where you slap your lap and I swear to god it fixed it so fast take this exercise serious if your struggling with changes
Update I’m 4 months in chord changes are getting better I stopped doing the drill but it helped me for like a month I can change chords pretty easily now but only specific ones don’t give up guys!
@@xwolfspackx nice to hear your journey ☺️
All these chord changing videos I see are based on beginners.. OK what if you are going for that last little tiny bit to get to top pro smoothness, but you still hear a tiny bit where it needs to improve.. Sure it is passable, but not top pro..What do you got for that situation?
8:35 this song is a tik tok waiting to happen
I don’t know if you will see my comment, i even tried to find you on instagram only to say a really thank you! It was very helpful and good way to switch chords while playing!!! It was my problem and now it solved because of you!!
You're welcome!
im not a beginner but ive been struggling with changing from barre chord to barre chord and this has helped so muchh, thank you!!
Good Guitarist. This was an amazing video. I’ve been struggling between G to D or C. I’m gonna try this tech out and see how it works and let you know. Thanks
if you use your pinky for A in Asus2, then the transition would be a lot quicker and smoother. in addition, playing E and A for Asus2 using pinky and ring fingers allows you to bar it as well. not sure if this alternate fingering is considered advanced or not, but i think it'd be a lot more productive to transition using pinky because you're knocking two birds with one stone
thank you!! your videos are simply great. instructive, and clear and awesome. a great help on my guitat journey
Bro this is one of the best exercise mann😆🥰
Yes!! 🤘
Thank you...it's not like I don't practise...but I need that organized clarity while practicing...without it...it feels a little overwhelming and tiring....
This suggestion video helped me put my practice sessions in a more productive time....😊👍👍

"State of Grace by Taylor Swift" SUBBED!!!❤😂 Thank youu!! This is so helpful!
Many thanks, wish I come across this earlier, very helpful video.
I started playing guitar a month ago, i was struggling with chord switch and this was the most helpful video ever. After watching this i was able to switch between g major and c major. Thank u soo much
Clever and cognitive, thanks.
I will definitely do this tonight!
Thanks very much for this superbly simple exercise. I’m a total beginner and can handle this!
Amazing tutorial, thank you so much for this, it really helped me out a lot, keep it up
Opening chords of "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield.
Can someone define "at the beginning" for me? I've been learning from zero for almost 2 years yet my chord switching still sucks for barre chords. Yes, I am still at the beginner level, but is it me that's too dumb or is it a normal phase for someone like me to take too much time?
THANKS A LOT SOOOOOOOOO MUCH
How can I hold a string right? This is one of the dumbest questions that you will get, but I genuinely cannot hold it without it making a buzzing noise 😭
Just a quick question does A sus 2 use 3 fingers or just 2? I think you used both in the video...thanks a lot 🙏
Finally a guy showed what i really wanted and needed!! Thank you 😊 ♥
I cannot switch between open chord and barre chord and also between barre chord and barre chord,my ring and pinky finger is always collapsing and moving randomly,i am practicing the changes between C minor and G minor for about 4 months, still i could not do it.Do anyone have an advice for this?
I was going along with the chords and i followed every step of the way and ended up slapping a girls behind and she got very uhm...wel you know...and i ended up doing something else...🔥
The slap the lap technique is superior 💯
Slap-o-lap method!
it's super hard to change from Em -> F bare chord .
It's true, but with some practice each day it does really get easier. - James
Are you holding your index finger down on A sus 2 like an A minor / or is it supposed to be lifted? I have a real hard time with A and if A sus 2 is a replacement for it I want to make sure I play it right
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
It is very very helpful ❤️❤️❤️
I am from India sir....sir you are the only one..who understand this proparly....love you my sir......
I want to use this privileged to thank you for the lesson but my question is that how do I do to be perfect.l did know not how to play music on the accosting guitar chords
My guitar strings are always flying no matter what i do it stays samw help me
Waitt im confused I thought the Asus2 chord is played on the 2nd fret of the 3rd and 4th string because i see you also added your pointer finger on the 1st fret of the 4th string
the moment i strum then lift my fingers, the sound in the strings almost vanishes and in some cases they go like buzzzz... whayt to do?
Brother,
In a progression, for example g, c, d, a minor when G card to be hold and when the C card to be hold and when am chord to be hold. Is there any formula for it or when pitch comes down a minor to be hold or C chord to be behold or what is the way the chords to be changed from one to another.
The link for the challenge doesn’t work for me. It keeps sending me to the basic course. EDIT: Oops, never mind! Found the link in the free ebook. Thanks!
I want to be a guitarist and bought a new guitar .i am really difficult to move from one chord to another .please tell me what should i do
None of these shits will work, you just have to practice everyday man
I can make all the open chords,it’s other voices like diminishes or the likes that I struggle to the chord straight forward
Do you have guitar courses for beginners? I want to buy one. The way you teach is awesome 😊
Won’t lie “so you can just grab it out of thin air” caught me off guard I was dying 🤣
I can play smoothly now after 3 months of doing this
Man this is depressing haha i used play well now my hand just gets all wonky. now I'm here haha
And now from open D to Barre Chord Bmin 😂😂😂 (it is all about practicing and not giving up...)
You are correct
Good Guitarist thanks man I hope your business do good and you can share some nice fingerstyle songs in the future, maybe with some percussion (not everything needs to be easy eh). Grtz from Belgium
Anyone??....brand and model of this guitar
