#classicguitarsolos. #angusyoung #rockguitar
I don't think AC/DC gets enough credit for how spot on their timing is, especially Angus' phrases.
Totally agree the whole band is in the pocket all recorded before ProTools
Because many metal nerds consider him "non-technical". Such poor people they are.
I don't like ACDC songs because i have different taste in music, but their talent is undeniable
and most peaople forget how important Malcolm was as a sonwriter and musical director on stage. He kept them all together and was the soul of AC/DC.
Dont get enough praise for being tight ?? WTF did I just read.
I completely disagree, I think they have had heaps of praise lauded upon them to the point where Angus is a terrible ego maniac, right from the start of their career, and it still goes on to this day, yes they are a great tight blues rock band. I love a lot of their tunes, too bad the band is a bunch of dorks, but oh well, I dont hang out with em so i guess it really makes no matter to me, but i really think they have had a lot of praise for their tightness, or do I mean tightassness, ya made up word, in run on sentence.
I always thought that’s what people gave them cred for
Back in black always makes you feel like a complete badass.
Back in Black is the Australian National Guitar Riff. More people know it than know the national anthem.
Angus Young is a living legend. He'll be remembered for many years as one of the greatest guitar players of all time.
HOW does this man doesn’t have millions of subscribers?? 🤔 This man breaks down every key points in songs and it’s great 👍🏼
Word is definitely getting out about Ricks channel. Soon he will have the millions of subscribers ... he deserves
Because people who really care about music will always give time to listen to Rick's ptograms. In other words he assumes you are familiar or interested with the pieced he covers. He is quite brilliant, but, and this is no reflection on Rick or his exploration of music genres, he does tend to focus on guitar based music where there are many other great guys such as Marty Music/Guitar Jamz who do a fine line in specific tutorials whereas Rick will take an intelligent overview from a conceptual perspective.
He doesn't really stray into synth-land either which has a multitude of great instructors, producers etc.
30 years ago he'd have ruled MTV but YT is far too fragmented and focused on specifics which will have a bigger draw on people's valuable time.
Having said that I watch his output daily, being the same age and appreciating his subject matter as a contemporary.
Spread the word. Its important for musicians to be aware of Rick's channel and knowlege. Also buy the Beato Book! Make it your bible
He'll get there. He's only been doing this for a few years. Every single solitary musician needs to subscribe if they care about improving as a musician. Then buy the book.
Everybody loves music but not everybody wants to learn music!
“It’s very hard to play!”
...plays it perfectly.
Carlos Rios was friends with Larry Carlton and copped a lot of his vocabulary and bending style from him. (Larry was also instrumental in getting Carlos the audition for that Gino record.) Also, in interviews in Guitar Player magazine after Brother To Brother came out in '79, Carlos said that he used to have a small 2 track recorder and would play Pat Martino solos at half speed (which btw lowers the pitch an octave ... making it sound like mud) over and over to study his licks.
The whole album is great and has Carlos all over it. Bought it when it came out and had many copies since.
Great job and playing, as always, Rick!
This guy is incredible how he gets so close to each song’s tone. He must have gear out the ass
Gear? Yes. But also knowledge and passion, that’s what makes Rick stand out.
He's a producer so yeah
Sometimes you forget how insane Rick’s soloing chops are
Brother to Brother. One of my favorite records. I’ve had it for 25 yrs. Carlos Rios amazing guitarist. wish I’d heard more of him
Nelson Riveros so underrated
Angus Young was a huuuuuuuuge influence on me as a young guitar player. To this day, I have friends who are just as capable as I am say, "I really don't understand how he does that vibrato bend so well. It's inhuman."
But I can do it because I modeled my playing after him as a kid. They didn't. I like to brag about that. Need to learn those triplet fills though. I love the little bursts speed.
Woww!! Amazing... 👏👏👏
Angus' phrasing is something that I think is lost on many guitarists today. His ability to know when to play and when to pause is really a beautiful thing. Very few rock and metal players do that these days. Thanks for the excellent videos! And your playing is great!
I agree. It's just as important to know when not to play.
This was something that really impressed me about BB King's playing as well.
Best music channel. PERIOD. SUCH INTERESTING CONCEPTS
Rick, this is killer!!! I'm so glad you included Carlos Rios' work with Gino Vannelli!! Gino's music from that era is amazing!! And thanks for all the extra work you did to avoid blockage!!
Covering "Stairway to Heaven" today is very appropriate. Happy 47th "Led Zeppelin IV"!!
Someone noticed!
When you talk about Jimmy Page solos don't forget to mention "Since I've Been Lovin You."
And "Tea For One", Achilles not bad either.
So many kick ass Paige riffs in Zepps 10 yr run.....30 song minimum
And Black Dog and Fool in the Rain.
The winner of them all it's No Quarter from TSRTS live album
Definitely. "Since I've Been Loving You" and "You Shook Me". I listened to the latter on trips to and from work this week and had forgotten how much that solo kicks ass. Plant's harp solo right before it is pretty fucking good too.
"Appaloosa" from the "Brother To Brother" album also has an amazing solo, would recommend checking out!!!
Brother to Brother 😎 The Eb melodic minor run over the D7#9 is a great example of how to incorporate jazz in a pop/rock format. Right on, Carlos!
This is an absolutely amazing video. You bring back so many great memories for me. The first songs Ive learned when I picked up the guitar at age 14 were all Led Zeppelin songs. I had a cool mom and we would listen to "Stairway to Heaven" over and over again especially the solo. LOL Such great memories. :-)
In the late 70's I was in a band that played Brother to Brother. I remember how painful it was learning that solo. LOL The solo was a beast. It was the first solo I learned that helped me understand how to do better solos over chord changes. Also, the drummer of our band had a difficult time learning the drums to Brother to Brother. Crazy stuff.
Back in the day I was a snobby fusion player and yet loved everything about AC/DC's Back in Black. To this day I still love that song...
Thank you for bringing back so many great memories. Your wonderful videos seems like you are telling my story as a musician growing up. Thank you so much for all you do.
Man, what a great guitar player you are and what great guitar tone!!!
Thanks Tom! This is a fun new series :)
Rick - I’ve watched so many of your videos and I just want you to know I appreciate how much work goes into making them. And this is based only on what I can see - lord knows there’s a lot more behind the final product.
I don’t play any instrument now, but have always liked lots of different kinds of music as long as it wasn’t repetitive and dull. You have opened my ears to a metric ton of amazing little things I hadn’t noticed about my favorite songs in 40+ years of listening to them. You’ve also given me and my teenage daughter something we can enjoy and marvel over, together. Thank you for all you do.
It's crazy how people (I say people cause we don't always know who pushes it) want videos explaining why their songs are so great blocked. Not only are their tracks being celebrated, they may remind people to go listen to the original tracks because of these videos, which is not only free advertising, but also helps to immortalize their talent. I would be ecstatic, and beyond happy if someone made a video about how talented I am.
Well said
Yeah, it definitely sucks. I wonder how much of it is the actual artists versus the publishers just being dicks.
Money Money Money!
The Lonely Traveller That could be part of it, but someone is still pushing for it, because certain things are taken down, while others aren’t. If it was a blanket algorithm, not affected by certain people’s efforts to “protect” their tracks, wouldn’t everything playing/analyzing a song get removed for copyright?
the words of the profits are written on the studio walls and concert halls...
With apologies to Paul Simon
@@jonathansturm4163 Rush
You're so right about Angus, in a way he's very underrated. Almost no one talks about how perfect his technique is. The intro solo of "rock'n'roll singer" is my favorite Angus moment. Just perfect bending, vibrato and feel. And he's only 17 - 18 there. He sounds like a seasoned black dude. By the time he got to back in black he was unbeatable. Also check out the guitar work in the razor's edge album. Amazing!!! People say that ACDC plays the same things in every record. Well, not quite......
"Gonna beee a rock n roll Sing-ahh!"
Love that solo as well.
👍
@@ColdSmokes Gonna be a rock'n'roll star, yes I are!
@MasterBluesRockGuitar Angus was 20 when T.N.T was recorded. He just looked 17 because he's not a big guy.
Gino Vanelli, what a talented group of musicians. One of my favorite bands from the 70's. That drum solo on Brother To Brother is one of the best of all pop music, including Steve Gadd's incredible work on Steely Dan's Aja.
Wooohooo...I LOVE this episode...those are three mighty guitar solos indeed...WOW, that was some super-fine skill you exhibited...fingers crossed, this stays up...thanks so much, Rick...you're the best!!! 💗💗💗
At some point in time, guitarists started to act like the Young Brothers weren’t very talented because they used power chords in their songs and AC/DC songs were easy to play. I’m glad people like Rick can really shed some light on how talented these guys truly were. Especially when it comes to precision timing, excellent phrasing and incredible songwriting which often get lost in the mix behind shredding etc. People often assume that if something is played at a faster tempo, that it is superior to something maybe slower but more thought out and well arranged. Great video Rick!
LOL, he said AC/DC songs are easy to play ...
Yes, Matt. And I've heard people criticize AC/DC drumming for the same reason, and I argued "yes, it might seem easy but it's exactly what the songs need - incredibly powerful beats. OK, I love Neil Peart and Rush as well, but Phil Rudd's drumming sound is instantly recognizable and part of what made AC/DC great.
Want to thank you so much for the time you put into these videos, especially the "What Makes This Song Great" videos. It's made me re-listen to some of these songs that I wasn't a big fan of, but have a much better appreciation for them. Really helps a casual player, like myself, stay inspired. Keep the vids coming, huge fan of the channel. Thank you
I have to admit, the tone of your guitar in Stairway to Heaven solo is soooo good, 100% spot on. Plus the use of Tele, the guitar Page recorded the song with. :)
Agreed, but then it sounds just as great when he plays other stuff on it! My pos tele isn't anywhere near as versatile.
It might just be the pickups or wiring on your tele. if you neck is true and frets are leveled, even the cheapest instrument can sound gorgeous :) I have a cheap ass 3/4 scale Yamaha acoustic APXT2EW model for $200 that I swapped machineheads and polished the frets on and it sounds brilliant.
@@DerpMuse Yeah, I need to do something to it. I sold all my guits and gear 10 years ago and just grabbed a beat tele in trade. It's crap, but I can make it do stuff, sometimes.
+@@guitboxgeek He does have a great sound on the Tele. One thing to remember:
He's also got some quality overdrive and studio effects to pick from. It's not
just plugged in to an amp with an o.d. pedal of some sort. Rick is an excellent
player who knows how to get the required sound for anything he's doing. And,
it's still in the hands, no matter what. He can really, really play.
Didn't Page play that solo on a Tele?
I like how the solo in Back in Black sounds easy, but its a lot trickier than you think. Brilliant Rick!
Aquila Edwards His solos were never crazy, but holy crap are they good.
I used to really enjoy playing Angus' solos because they were more intricate than they sounded. Some of those licks like the one Rick showcased were pretty tough to pull off in the right style and timing.
I’ve played the Shook Me and Highway to Hell solos. Back in Black and Hell’s Bells are very difficult, for me anyway. Angus is impeccable!
when I 1st started really getting into playing, AC/DC and Metallica were the bands that really made me want to play. I used to play along to let there be rock for hours, over and over. Angus was a HUGE influence on me, and for sure without him I probably wouldn't be playing guitar today.
Angus isn't playing for the critics, he's just trying to give you a fucking heart attack.
Love the 'well, I guess I'll get around this by doing it sloppier'. That's pretty amusing.
I just had several shivers-down-the-spine moments watching this. Thanks so much Rich. Your vids are REALLY great!
Cheers for this Rick! You are like a musical 'pathologist' dissecting some classic rock riffage. Great material for me to wind down and recover some equilibrium from a nightshift as an NHS Health Care Assistant on a Dementia ward...
I've been watching a few of your videos here and there. I must say, even after playing for more than 20 years, I'm still learning new things all the time. You blew me away with that second solo, I rarely hear niche guitar playing like that anymore. With music, a musician never stops learning. Keep up the great content!
Brilliant Rick! Thanks so much for playing Gino's music, the most criminally underrated performer still producing incredible music.
Pure class Rick all 3 of’em the Carlos Rios one is simply insane execution-keep up the great work
You are an AMAZING musician and Carlos Rios's solo on "Brother To Brother" is the best... You nailed it!
All killer tracks, of course - but that Carlos Rios solo has inspired me since I first heard it (around 1981). So outside sounding, so utterly cool. In my all-time top 5 solos, for sure. Thanks, Rick!
Holy crap, I gotta go find that Gino Vanelli record now...those lines were fire! Thanks for opening another new door, Rick!
Yup added that album to my "Albums to Get" list.
Did you catch the name of the song?
@@AndalusianIrish Pretty sure it's the title track on Brother to Brother. Funny thing is, most people have probably heard the hit "I Just Wanna Stop" and have no idea about the fusion stuff. I was one of those people until today!
Check out Carlos Rios's solo on 'Cool Weasle Boogie' from Chick Corea's first Elektric Band LP. So super badass. I think he plays on GV's 'Appoloosa' also.
Carlos Rios was a badman on that album: The Evil Eye also has him unleashing the fury!
Love how Rick can "re-build" the song when a video gets blocked, so we can still get the gist of his video. Excellent work!
Thanks for the extra effort to highlight the AC/DC solo! Worth it.
Man ....you are so talented, the way you put things together make a lot sense and easy to understand the concept.
Thanks again for your channel 👍
I had no idea about the Carlos Rios solo... amazing, never heard the song, artist or solo player. Just outstanding Rick. Love the way to said, "It's very hard to play. I'm going to try and do it"... then you nail it. Wicked good.
Haha :)
thank u Rick for your amazing channel. hope you can make more of this series.
Rick you shred! Thanks for all you do!
Awesome guitar playing Rick. Great solo selections. You rock!
Thank you for reviewing the solo on the Gino Vanelli tune! The solo has lots of altered dominant licks, brings joy to a sax player's heart like mine!
Gino Vanelli,Brother To Brother, the guitar solo is great but the drumming is mindblowing especially the live version,Mark Craney R.I.P.
Really enjoying these solo series! Thank you!
Rick, you are the best & greatest Player / guitar analyst I've ever seen, or heard. Thanks a million.
This is great, I'm loving this series, I know so little about soloing, it's never been my thing, but this has just made me want to get my les paul out this evening. There's no one like you Rick! Keep it up!
Valiant and impressive effort on the Rios solo Rick, you hammered that out very well.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Love it! That jazz rock solo was really cool!
Man that Carlos Rios solo is something else!
You are so solid Rick! I love the fact that you can play almost any style really well
The solo to My Sharona (full version) is the most underated solo IMO
This is just facts
M-m-mmyyy sharona
fifthof , I used to do the same, ‘sobbing’, until I realized that some of my friends (and millions of unknown), have hearing losses, some totally deaf, and then I became grateful at being blessed with the ability to HEAR the music that so many of us enjoy and take for granted! I don’t mean it in a ‘preachy’ sort of way, but literally, I can not imagine not ever being able to listen to music, much less, the varieties I’ve been introduced to through the years, from both radio/media, and live events at venues I normally would never have ended up at, we’re it not for randomly finding out about it on the web (mostly UA-cam).
No.
Thin Lizzy
Romeo and The Lonely Girl.
Jailbreak album.
You will thank me.
You performed those solos so well 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Brother to brother! YES! That's amazing. That, and Jimmy Haslip's bass solo! What a song!
Joe Calandrella
Your comment about conceptualizing the solo, then learning it, then executing it, is brilliant.
Love your video Rick. I appreciate the music so much more.
Great Video, Rick. Since I've subscribed, my playing, songwriting and producing has improved immensely. Thanks for the time you put in on our behalf.
How did you get all the bends in Stairway solo so perfectly? Cmon, that some master playing
Excellent chops on that second solo.
Brother To Brother is my favorite album from the 70s. I love the bass and drums on that cut. They are so tight!
Stairway to Heaven, Comfortably Numb, and Hotel California are my three classic solos! And your rendition of Carlos Rios solo was spot on! GV's albums from the late 70s & 80s were awesome! Saw him/them in concert at USM in '78. I listen to those tracks in my younger days over and over, love the solo from Brother to Brother but have never heard anyone critic his work! Thanks for including! Listenin' to it right now!!!
Really loving this. Hope it continues.
Love these keep bringing them!
Rick - you are the new level of youtube. So much work, such accuracy - so little fluff, consistently excellent and always looking to improve. Thank you for all your effort, you may never know how many people you've helped - for years to come - a true teacher.
Thank you!!
😲... picking my jaw up off the floor...💖- your playing is GOLD!
Love your analyses of the solos. More from this series please!
Another great one. Thanks Rick
Gotta say great job playing these classics Rick!
Job well done! And these are epic solos
Love your channel, excellent insight on theory and everything else!! 👍🏾🙏🏿
Love this solo and especially the live one from Song Remains the Same. So good.
Thanks so much for illuminating the Brother to Brother solo
I DID have this album from all those years ago but had never heard of Carlos and didn’t realise quite how amazing that solo was until you dissected it so well
Am now revisiting that album with renewed enthusiasm!
Simon
I've never heard of Carlos Rios, but that is one absolute steaming guitar solo. Thanks Rick!
I luvs Pagey's bends. Rick is the captain. Always amazed by his knowledge and skill.
Rick your musicianship is outstanding. Your guitar playing is a joy to watch & your teaching style is impressive. Keep up the excellent videos. Inspired by your channel. All the best. Eric
ANGUS..ANGUS..ANGUS. One of the all time rock n roll legends. Thanks
Brother To Brother...I hear that solo all the time... amazing song and album...
This is so good! Thanks Rick
Rick you're an beast and inspiration! The best on the tube!👏✌❤
What a virtuoso on guitar and piano is Beato... Thoroughly enjoyable videos.
Please keep doing these. They are great
So glad you put Gino in there. “Brother to Brother” and “Appaloosa “ ( and others) such great recordings.
Angus Young is one of the hardest guys to to cover and make it sound anywhere near him. His feel and vibrato is so distinctive, that it's really hard to nail. You can play the notes but you probably won't sound right. I'm really glad to see you give him credit, because I feel like he's often overlooked as a great blue based rock player. I didn't get it until I had been playing guitar for many years just how good he is.
most of the cats who try to do Angus' stuff use way too distorted a tone, so they're immediately starting out in a deep hole.
all those classic rock guitarists are hard to sound like ... try Ketih Richards or Brian May to name a few ... Hell, even try BB King vibrato ;)
Again no credit and underrated, WTF where do u people live in a hole under a rock. Angus has been one of the most celebrated rock guitarists of all time. buts he's just so underrated. Spare me, guys a freak ego maniac, hes had too much praise far as I can tell. hes a great blues guitar player, it begins and ends there. He has nothing else, but hes lauded as one of the greatest of all time. LOL.
SpammerOvTheGods Yes! You’ve got let that amp breath, don’t squish the angst with a distortion pedal.
Thanks for setting me straight.
I don't know what I was thinking ! @@tommyboyce
Man, that Carlos Rios solo is amazing. Thanks for bringing to people's attention. Surprised Steely Dan didn't snag him up on something
Omigoodness! The Carlos Rios solo❣️ So excited! 🌪😅
This is a great series Rick!
Geez Rick !! What a great video !! You have got these solo's down Bro !! I've been to plenty of concerts where the original player couldn't get it right. Please , more of these for sure !!!
Angus' solos from "Ride On" are my favorite, and some of the best solo work in rock. The passion that comes through is undeniable.
Love how you re did the episode to make it work, mad lad.
Great video Rick. Always been a fan of Gino Vanelli. Santa Rosa blew me away, especially the end, wow. More of this. Thanks
Rick, you are great! Keep it up
Rick shredding on the second solo.......very impressive! :) Another quality video.
my favourite lick of the stairway-solo is the one directly after the slide guitar comes in for the first time
Rick your page and videos are so great. Better than any university level “music appreciation” course. And your passion for and knowledge of jazz guitar is very helpful.
I love these videos buddy. You are a genius
Killed the Angus Young solo!!! Loved it!
Rick I love you and your channel. At 30, my musical interest the past couple years was waning. I went a full year without touching a guitar. Now, I practice even less and listen more, mostly to this channel or the ideas presented. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! Without it many of us would be much worse off. Its amazing how in music, a single idea contained in a lesson can change someone's musical career.
This middle solo, ahhh... So great
