the funny thing about Richthofen is that he was a ruthless ace and would shoot down anyone he came across, but he was also merciful and honorable too. he DESPISED anyone who took advantaged of a downed, but surviving pilot, as he viewed it as basically killing a defenseless child. he would take POW's and invite them to dinner to get to know them rather than treat them like trash, and he would show respect to those who posed a significant challenge to shoot down and very well could have shot him down themselves. just because he was ruthlesss, doesn't mean he was a heartless murderer who had no care for his enemy; he was simply just a pilot who was fighting for his country just like they were. sadly, with the bombing of Berlin in WW2, the Museum in which his very plane, along as the last of the (legitimate and original) Fokker Dr.1's, was being kept was destroyed.
Most of his kills where in the Bi-wing Abatross not the Fokker Tri-plane his legend made famous. The Flying Circus reference is for the idea that his squadron planes where all painted bright loud colors.
Manfred Von Richthofen was a WW1 ace pilot with 80 air victories before his death a few months before the end of WW1. Herman Goering was supposed to have taken over for him after his death but the war ended.

Interestingly it has never been confirmed who exactly shot him down because a number of Allied pilots claimed it.
