CEO looks like he was playing a character but really he was genuinely trying not to make a mistake. This sort of personality proves that this project can be a massive thing.
Just getting something like this off the ground and reaching the "product in the hands of end users" phase was a pretty major feat - companies nowadays _really don't like_ "power to the people" in any form, so a fully customizable lappy with no fixed ties to any specific component mfr. means no exclusivity for partners which in turn means a much harder process to even _get_ partners. This round of new product announcements may have taken _10-20 years_ to reach. I can cut a CEO slack about having to be tight-lipped given the most likely circumstances.
I thought this was a roast and a letter to someone that cared to replace the mistake they made, from the title and thumbnail, well i was baited, but in the bad way this time, could not bring myself to watch it even if it was constantly recommended to me for about a day now, i initially said too much negativity lately, but decided to take my heart and see if the youtube knows something i don't, and it did, i am glad i watched this video, but i am still not in need of such product yet, what i want is a dual os steam deck of Android and Steam OS, so i can play mobile games and low demanding steam games, also wishing it had a strong 4G only antena that has digital and physical SIM compatibility. (Also mandatory magnetic joysticks and dock included)
I'm still begging for a keyboard in front and clear of obstruction, trackpad above, _and_ I don't want to lose numpad either. But this screams of potential for at least some improvement to the asinine standard layout. Trackpad on user's choice of side maybe?
3rd reply lol 😂😂 Hi @DIY Perks! I watch your channel, thought this sounded like something you’d like 😊 Edit: Wow this is more likes than I ever imaged I'd get!!
That guy from Framework is one of the most calming presences I have ever seen on Linus videos. He's so full of smiles and passion for this product they're showing off. I love it.
This is probably the first time I've ever actually been baited by an LTT title. I legit thought this was a video about the downfall of Framework, turns out it was the opposite and I'm getting more and more excited for Framework possibly making its way into Europe in the future.
You can buy them in Germany already. If you know someone there and there's a keyboard option already out that you can live with you can get them to buy it there for you
I think the price needs to come way down, some extension cards are unrealistic. Also, when I can decide between a high speed usb or a 3.5mm jack, I wish it wasn't only one port per slot...
That's it. It's done. My next laptop is a framework. Dedicated GPU and a number pad were all that was missing... But they went above and beyond that. This is amazing.
yeah, I can't afford one yet, but I will be switching as soon as I get out of college. Graphics and processing power are a necessity in engineering. I can't even imagine what I could do with a modular laptop for engineering.
I'm glad they're doing well because this is such a win for consumers. Not only do they seem like a good product, they're forcing the bigger companies hand.
This all sounds to good to be true! We still need to hear the prices, because if laptops made with these special modules are more expensive than an already assembled branded laptop, it will hardly have a market (except for a small number of enthusiasts), and everything here sounds expensive and inflated.
Looking at ebay and availability of all the parts I need to rebuild my current thinkpad, I think Lenovo is a ahead of them in this regard. :D I mean, they supply full fucking system data sheet and repair manuals with thinkpads and at least my gaming laptop which is an ideapad. The system isn't opensource, but uhm. I'm not sure what all the fuzz is about here when literally how Lenovo is doing this with ThinkPads is the most economically viable way to sell to both technologically proficient users and customers operating large fleets that have no interest in fixing the system themselves but want a new one as fast as possible and the old one going back for a refurb for a discount in the on-site delivery guarantee of the failed system... I do understand the point of open sourcing these things. But, then again you can literally flash a core boot firmware into an ever growing number of both intel an amd Lenovo ThinkPads. Lenovo supporting the open source UEFI firmware thing as well. And gives good Linux support with ThinkPads already. I think Framework maybe over engineering this and are going to sink not swim. System76 on the otherhand seems to have its shit together with not going into making everything replaceable in some fantasy world, where this is somehow desirable to anyone but a tech enthusiast infected by the "green-shift" psychosis...
Individual consumers imo aren't enough, enterprises needs to be completely sided on this new standard. . The most obstacle would be came from the lobbyist
@@Bayofthe91st Sadly I Agreed. But I feel this could be good for enterprise too. And at the risk of sounding kind of dumb, I'm going to ask, what exactly is a lobbyist? Are they really just people payed by corps to address congress, or wall street to fight against things that may be bad for their corporation? Even if it could be a net positive?
@@matthewtrebs9738 tbf, he can't look too excited about it given his position as an investor, so he just stated facts. Leave the hypebuilding for people with no conflict of interests.
I’m a big fan of the older Thinkpads, and the push for paper-thin machines with less ports, less upgradabilty, etc. has left me searching…this looks promising. I’m definitely going to give one of these a try.
The market demands paper thin machines which is why the previous older concept fails what this does is bridge the gap and offers those 13 inch paper thin machines but with the upgrade ability which is why I think framework will be successful where every other company has been failing for the last decade
Would be awesome if they throw us a bone and give us something a little thinkpad inspired. I really just want a few core features that keep me using them. Ignoring the ability to load of foss bios like coreboot on some of my old thinkpads. I really want my trackpoint and the correct trapezoidal buttons, I want something like the 9cell battery sticking out the back solid as a handle (sounds dumb but if you use it you know it's the best for standing with a laptop) and the durability. I also like that they are very basic black squares or rectangles they fit into my bags well and they're very easy to keep clean usually.
It's always about cooling for laptops that can majorly hinder performance... Slim is just not there IMHO, but a nice alternative to a tablet for a keyboard!
If you are asking if the top and the bottom parts are interchangeable, they are not. Framework confirmed that they've tried that. But the keyboard was too far from the bottom border to be comfortable, impacting the user experience. With that said, it doesn't stop someone to create a keyboard with smaller height to fit in the bottom part.
It was, but I hope it's just A gag for the video and not for real - no clue how CEO's and Investors work behind the scenes but if that's how it really is its a bit odd

@@CaptainHoratioPugwash framework isn't available in my country but it will eventually will be available here so i want to know buying the lowest spec doesn't allow one to upgrade the laptop? or we can upgrade it to the highest spec on our own...?
when that is the selling point of the company it's not really incredible at all is it? well I guess maybe it is looking at what happened with makerbot.
Wow...this is genuinely the first time I've been blown away by the framework concept and genuinely now have hope for its future, I 100% will be happy to start offering them in my IT shop once they have a proper Australian distribution channel.
@@kenpurchase819 as of now none of the major distribution channels carry them, it makes warranty very hard for a smaller business like us and means long wait times for customers, the second they partner with a big distro or have an Australian based repair centre I'm definitely getting the owner to do it, he's stoked on them too but also waiting for that
This will definitely be my next laptop choice. As a robotics engineer, having that kind of modularity is vital since you never know what kind of port you might need to connect to some niche part. Plus it gives me the freedom to develop my own modules to improve productivity or enhance the user experience when it comes to assembling a prototype. In fact, the removable motherboard seems like a great option as a robot's on board computer. Great work Framework!
I hadn't even thought about needing a board for a robot as an excuse to upgrade your framework lmao Or buy secondhand old framework boards. Wonder if they will end up being a quasi competitor to raspberry pi years down the line when the older boards are more obsolete and therefore come down in price.
I'm so happy to see entities like Framework having the success they deserve in the face of all the other greedy companies. For now I stick to my old Thinkpad, but at the right time I must get one of those
Love the CEO, he seems to watch your videos and knows that just telling you you cant do something isn't enough so he has to be there personally to make sure you don't take it apart.
The modularity of being able to move around the keyboard and trackpad is a game changer. And the fact that it all just clips in and out in seconds is amazing.
@@samroberts7404 It makes sense, you can hot swap monitors and keyboards and things on normal computers, but its still cool that it works so seamlessly
I was going to make a joke about it ACTUALLY being a game changer. Playing a FPS? throw out the numpad and just use the keyboard, playing a flight sim or something similar that has a lot of controls? pop in the numpad. You might actually be changing the keyboard around when you change games. Then I wondered something. Could they make a fighting controller thing? Playing Street fighter or similar game? Take off the whole keyboard and plop on a fighting controller with the buttons and a joystick (screwable, so you could detach it, leave the rest of the module and close down the laptop and take them with you. It might be something that's too niche for Framework as a company to do, but I could easily see the community coming up with it. Hell speaking of the flight sim I mentioned before, can you imagine people making a whole cockpit module with this thing? With slides and buttons and knobs. Obviously there is not a lot of space to do these things while still being able to close the lid, but again I could see the community coming out with a special case that gives you more depth where the "keys" are. Yeah, the laptop would get bulky, but it's modular so who the hell cares, when you decide you want to chill out and no longer play flight sim every day just put it back in a normal case and use it as a regular laptop. The options for this are just crazy.
The numpad being moveable and addable made all the difference for me as a Blender user. Holy crap I want one so bad right now. Framework is so god damn cool, damn the expense and lack of funds I have.
They could also make an AI buddy screen for interacting with your fav ai seperate from your screen so as to have like a little buddy to help with coding and stuff
I've been trying to get us to replace our company HP laptops with Framework because I love this concept and it would make repairs and configurations so much easier for our users. Manager not convinced yet though so will have to be patient and show more videos like this I reckon. Great job!
I remember when Framework first showed up on this channel, I thought to myself there were 3 things stopping myself from getting one for my next laptop: 15-17" Chassis dGPU option AMD option And in one fell swoop they've gone from a iterative 11th > 12th gen upgrade last year to doing all of the above and more!
I was looking at one but it had no dGPU option. As soon as this comes out, I am probably going to trade in my current laptop. I love the idea of modular laptops.
Dude framework got a glow up! I thought upgradeability and changeable io was alright; something you might make use of every once in a blue moon. But the sheer degree of change and customization you can do with the 16” makes it feel like just the perfect way laptops should have been developed
@@KJ4EZJ Plus one can imagine what diy modules could potentially do, if they have it done correctly you might make this an oscilloscope, diagnostic tool, music interface. There is much potential there. I imagine once someone thinks up small enough sensor you could even do some sort of chemical analysis.
This is why I haven't bought a laptop in years, I couldn't justify replacing it when I needed a new GPU. Game has now changed! Really looking forward to being able to slot in a external GPU though.
This entire thing gave me goosebumps for some reason, i really like how framework is doing all of this and im happy that there is a TON of people (including me) who is onboard with this.
The ease to remove the default keyboard and replace it with a numpad on the left and right side gave me goosebumps. No screws or flimsy ribbon connection required.
I haven't bought a brand new laptop in 12 years. One of these my be my first. I'm a huge fan of the upgradeability. Its so sad how many computers get tossed out cuz you can't keep them up to par
It's a win/win for Linus. LTT gets a video with multiple ADs and sponsors to pay the bills. Linus' investment also will get a boost no doubt. Any influencer that has incentments when reviewing an item should be taken with a pinch of salt; wait for an independent review or at least get a few user reviews from trusted independent websites.
I think they got the right way of development. As other companies had tried to cope with their ideas, they made a step ahead. GPU module is a great thing, but I am impressed by hot swappable input interfaces: changing configuration is a (great) thing, but potentially swap different devices (like a pen tablet surface, as an example) on the fly without restarting has more potential too. Honestly, I do not really need a laptop now, but I think that when this will available in Italy I will yield to the temptation and I'll buy it.
Man, this is life changing. I bought my gaming laptop a couple of years ago and I feel that in a few years it will be obsolete. But with this type of upgradable parts, its just amazing
I had the same feeling watching this. If I can buy a laptop and have foward looking expandability of upgrading to save money, I might be replacing 2 y/o laptop sooner than I thought.
@@sanithtait40 yeah, when your laptop becomes obsolete, just buy a the current generation of the part that has become obselete, it will save quite a bit of money then having to buy a new laptop

Yeah, probably not the title that should be used for a company that you're investing in and stated that you would drop if they don't commit to their promise.
The ability to add a numpad is so good. I'm really frustrated that my last two laptops haven't had a numpad, as I like doing programming and data entry tasks on my laptop, both of which are a lot better done with a numpad.
Replace "numpad" with "proper arrow keys" and you have what's been annoying me since 2015. Half-height arrow keys are just useless and only hurt productivity, I hate that they have become the standard.
I recently ordered a new laptop for my dad and the only hard requirements he had was at least the same screen size as the old one (15,6") and have a numpad as he writes lots of invoices for his business
Honestly, if a laptop has a numpad - I ain't buying it. It takes way too much space and makes the individual keys smaller - not ideal for a software dev.
Well this is it, my next laptop will be a Framework. Was enthousiastic about it when found out about them, but the lack of a bigger screen than 13" was a dealbreakers for me. Now thats no longer an issue, it is decided!
Bro, I was so worried when I saw the title Because I am really rooting for this company, and my heart sank for a second, but I am relieved that they are doing well, I want to invest but not in a position to currently do so, I am confident to say I will most likely get one of their laptops in the future. Please keep us updated, this laptop could honestly trigger a paradigm shift, not just in the laptop industry, but in all of the tech industry, this laptop will force companies to provide access to DIY repair and more open source in order to compete, Apple is not going to be happy being forced to step away from gatekeeping their repair options. I also just realized other companies are not just going to have to make their laptops more repairable, but also more modular in order to compete with framework.
I came in expecting grim news until he said "I even bought one" When a company can get to the stage where they can sell you a working product of something this unique, that means they they have skilled engineers who are able to create a product and that's the hard part. Once you have a working prototype it's just a matter of scaling up and advertising. So the fact that he swapped tone to say it was better than expected was no surprise at that point.
I'm afraid that this will have less of an impact then you might think. What you would need for it to have a true impact is companies starting to adopt it at large scale.
I've become kinda cynical towards modern tech, stuff feeling largely samey aside from small, kind of trivial features - Framework is the first consumer tech company in a while to have me this excited, really hope they see massive success in their future
Yeah, when I hit the market for a new laptop in like, hopefully 2 or more years, I'm going to be strongly looking at framework. Such a good design philosophy.
@@kenanderson3954 I've got a 12th gen 13 (with the 14-core i7) that I use for engineering school. 13 minutes into the video and I'm like why can't all laptops and computers be like this? I'm sixty2 not a techie but watching Linus have an on-air compugasm over this is fun
I have to be honest as a consumer: that laptop is one of the most frickin’ cool thing I’ve ever seen so far. I hope Framework make it payable and available because I want one.
Well it won't be much cheaper at the basis, but the whole point is that you should only have to buy that part once, and when you (need to) upgrade the rest is up to you. I think when it's out I'll buy the 16" with maybe some lower specs, depending on the price. And when I think I want to, wether this year or the next, I upgrade it to be able to play some heavier games on. Plus being able to have something like that little screen on the side of your keyboard available (I know it isn't confirmed to be available but just imagine) would look pretty nifty.
The fact that they were able to lock down supply from AMD is actually really promising. Somehow one-upped by the prospect of an external GPU housing for their replaceable GPU's... I really think they hit a tipping point with all of the stuff in this video. The level of customizability without feeling overengineered is actually insane.
I have to admit, the modularity of the keyboard area and the ability to add the num pad has convinced me. My next laptop is very likely to be a Framework now.
Framework needs to go global! Not just online, but authorised distributors and service centres. They're amazing. I'm blown away by not just swappable modules, but even movable keyboards and trackpads? Unbelievable.
Linus didn't mention it in the video, but they are expanding to more countries (Belgium, Italy, Spain and Taiwan were added). The current list is US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Ireland, Austria, Netherlands, Australia.
this kind of business model isn't very profitable either... you have to take that into consideration when just assuming they'll be able to continue expanding.
This is really cool. Absolute game changer if people give it a chance. Ive personally always loved the idea of modular tech and the graphics card option that is coming makes this viable.
Boy you got me big time with that bait and switch. So glad Framework isn't turning out to be a disappointment though, the laptop industry needs a disruptor like them.
I had a suspicion when I saw the title. I'm like, "I haven't heard any bad news about Framework?" Linus almost got me with the intro until I was like, "he's going to say he should have invested more, isn't he?" Yup. Nice bait and switch, Linus. Very well done. (Also I loved the sponsor segue!)
The hot swap is going to be entirely up to the OS. Much of the connections in a framework module tend to be through USB C, so if the OS can handle a USB keyboard it can handle the specifically shaped keyboard module that also plugs in via USB C
Love the modular design! Finally, a company took it on. But my question is, how rigid is the whole unit? I mean, with all those movable parts, it's a question that comes to mind
It already got me at "removable batteries are back". This laptops are gonna be revolutionary if they succeed. Hope that Framework does since it will be reduce the E-waste and everyone who wants to have a laptop won't have to worry about becoming obsolete every 3 or 4 years
They already have succeeded in getting me to adopt them. Love repairing my own stuff and this new version will definitely be mine and my old one will be my wife's.
for long travel and when you can't recharge easily, a swappable battery module is awesome, cause you can have as many as you like and not run out of battery for a few days. or use one with a solar, wind or watermill charger while you use the other inside a cabin.
@@satibel yeah it is but aside from that, the fact that you can add separate battery inside your laptop and increase the duration of you laptop already its amazing enough itself. Especially when you also combine it with Linux you basically get a laptop that never ends out of charge.
If they really do make swappable batteries available (preferably at least 2, and hot-swappable), then they should follow that up with a ruggedized case. Fieldwork-friendly laptops (thinking about it, "Fieldwork" is probably the right product name for that) with customer-customizable ports would definitely sell.
I barely have a use for a laptop as is, but what Framework is doing makes me want to buy one of theirs, just to support the cause & ideas! This is what true innovation looks like.
I feel the same way, but it sort of defeats the purpose of building for sustainability if you buy a laptop you don't even need. I wonder if you can donate to their cause on their site or something?
@@happybobyou Same here. I've used laps like this for years. IMO, best way to maintain an active laptop when not on the road. Keep them on slide outs in a surplus rack from a closed AT&T switching center. Added dust filtered fans to keep 'em clean, and cool..
Biggest thing for me is a sort of open source marketplace that promotes modders selling and trading, so if framework hasn't thought of something, some genius tinkerer out there might have and they can provide that to the community almost in the same way software modders do. And make some money doing it. That's huge and can give the framework community longevity for years to come. It creates an enthusiast market. Brilliant move.
Until someone buys them out or replaces the founder and CEO with a classic silicon valley bro who only cares about growth and profits! Ugh, in pessimistic, but been around long enough.
I'm having goosebumps as to how this is possible and no other company has done it before because they are just hungry for money. Definitely buying this
This modular design definitely doesn't come free. I won't pretend to know the full extent of the challenges that come with designing a laptop, but I imagine that such a modular design adds significant constraints and overheads to an already difficult and expensive engineering problem.
its just like the time microsoft tried to have a modular phone. Its something really difficult and expensive to do. Its a high risk low reward (company wise) task. It may be even bad for usual companies like microsoft, dell or hp. If you are only selling 1 computer per costumer, and then just upgrades, you are losing a lot of value. Because framework is new in the market, having something like this makes them stand forward from other companies, and because they did not have any laptops before, they arent losing anything. Its just risky
@@MartinLedesma-lt8ce True and fair. But its not like if Microsoft would produce one that everyone is gonna buy it. Most of the people are probably tech people, and the other half may want other devices that just works without to much customizability.
This is the second time I'm this excited about any modular device. First was Google's 'Project Ara' which died unfortunate death through the hands of google and the second is 'Framework' so i really prey to the gods that this project not just survives but improves and inspires others to undertake something similar. I am so here for something like this man. I kinda hope that they consider doing a 17" model and that the GPU options get beefy as it goes upward in size. This is exactly what notebooks have needed for more than 20 years.
This is exactly what I wished for when I saw the first framework... I wanted a gaming laptop. They literally made a better version of what I imagined when I first saw a framework laptop. Let's just hope the price will be good now...
This kind of tech not being some one-off prototype shown at CES never to be seen again and INSTEAD being a prototype of a product being rolled out later this year is INSANE. I honestly can't believe Framework has been making this happen, feels like a fever dream.
I was concerned by the title, I've been trying to get our team moved over to Framework. This was a great video that I think proves the next gen will be our next purchase of 20 laptops. Will need to see some more specs obviously, live content manipulation is key, but I am certainly excited.
I myself am an engineering student and was considering over buying a framework laptop for myself. Right now I’m using a lenovo yoga 6 with AMD redion 5500u processor which isn’t powerful enough for my project applications. I’m also hoping to get some good value and price for new gen of these machines
I'm 80 and have owned several laptops. I saw the Rossman review of 13 and it was at that moment I decided that as soon as my current laptop dies, my final laptop would be a Framework. You made a very good investment!
Yeah, if only all companies were like that... Imagine talking to Dell how your keyboard broke, and instead of them telling you do send it in to them and wait 6-12 weeks for them to get it sorted, they just go "Alright, we'll send you a new one in the mail, you should have it in 2 days, let us know if you need more help to understand the instructions we'll send with the package of how to change out the keyboard yourself", and it's just as simple as it is in this video, where you can expect that the average person can figure it out and do it all on their own. Amazing.
@@NaGeLxZ Yeah, fully agreed. To be clear though, I think you missunderstood Gavins original comment, I think he meant what you mean. Like "imagine how great it would be if all CEOs were like this", or "imagine if this was how all companies worked, what if things were as easy to fix, that we can just get the parts and change them ourselves, rather than having to send it in for repair" is the basic gist I get from his comment.
This is insane. I was always tempted by the framework laptop, but that 16 inch one with all the features sounds like a STRONG contender for my dream/endgame laptop! The fact you could literally just rip the GPU out in place of something like a bigger battery for on the go, while still being able to have the performance when needed is game changing
This really is the laptop so many want. My laptop is not portable because it has awful battery life due to being high performance. The ability to swap put performance for battery life is what I want in a laptop.
Being able to just double your battery as you go on a series of long flights would be awesome. Don't have to stragicly use your laptop when on a 12 hour flight.
this is the push I needed to actually pony up and buy one. I really want to support the development and consumer rights they are pushing for more than anything! Please keep this up you guys.
If they'll ever integrate a detachable tablet as a screen for the whole thing that's capable of taking stylus input, Imma gonna _pony_ up as well. Pun intended.
They've definitely have come far. From the lacklustre Intel-11th gen CPU, weak iGPU, and limiting 13in size. Slowly they're going for the low-hanging fruits, which are: AMD, 16in option, dGPU option. They've added a couple bonuses like Matte screen, Numbpad, Accents, Marketplace, etc etc. Part of my worry, is that if you do too much too quick, you stretch yourself thin and compromise the whole operation. They should try to keep it limited and simple. Future considerations to make: - Extra large trackpad - Touchscreen - Stylus input - 120Hz+ screens - 4K+ screens - 360' hinge - free Mini PC bracket with every platform upgrade - new parts for Webcam, Microphone, Speaker, etc etc
That laptop is frickin awesome! We've been needing a laptop like that for a long time now! For years I've wished a fully upgradable laptop would be made. Well seems like my wish came true and I'm super excited! I'm not going to lie the silver is nice, but I would like to see an entire matte black version of it. But from what I can see dbrand does have skins for it but none of the skins I see cover the area around the touchpad, but I do applaud their effort for making skins for the Framework Laptop. Other than that, I'm sold it looks amazing and has a lot of potential. I can't wait to see all the customization options they come out with in the future.
I think it's safe to say my next choice in laptops is locked in, and I'm going to highly recommend it to my parents if they ever need a new machine. This is exactly what we needed, I'm so excited for the future of Framework, and sustainability as a whole. Honestly blown away at this point
I will absolutely buy that 16-in laptop when it's out. I have been waiting so long for a laptop that has true upgrade ability like this, and the GPU upgrades are just icing on the cake, especially because you could easily get the chassis and rebuild an old system if you decide to upgrade, and give that as a hand me down. Thank God someone like Framework exists now.
Yes,me too. I've been waiting for the AMD version to hit the FAN as well. with ALL that Modular and Shifting capabilities that Transformer Beast has,I was Blown away ! 😎
I'm a thinkpad guy, but those Framework laptops will make the choice for my next laptop upgrade more difficult (or not, if they keep at it like that). This "super key" instead of "window key" is huge!
As a fellow linux user.... I have no clue why anyone cares tbh. Meta3/4/whatever. Don't give a crap. But then again, my keycaps are blanks. Numpad is a nice edition, makes it where I can finally recommend it to my sister, an accountant, who finds them annoying without it (I personally prefer the top row and only ever used numpad for macro keys)
Thinkpads have a Trackpoint, unlike these and that's a deal breaker. When Framework laptops gets a Trackpoint as good on a Thinkpad then it's time to switch.
Hey, I said I'd buy into this as soon as they offered a laptop with a gaming-grade GPU - and I stand by that - but I didn't expect it to be MODULAR! Absolutely awesome!!
I am actually looking forward to buy a framework in the future. The idea of being able to change and replace parts of a laptop like in a desktop just make so much sense!
older models do have an issue with the system clock battery, which they did put out a "how to fix this guide" which is neat and all, but they really need to have someone on hand to warranty fix these systems for anyone who actually doesn't mind sending it off
This would probably be really really expensive in my opinion,And these niche products have always been way overpriced in the past but I will be curious to know
@@alex7633 They really just need to hire one or two people who can fix boards and knock out 3-4 of the fixes in an hour, which is significantly cheaper then trying to replace every product with a newer model. It should absolutely be doable, especially if the fix is simple enough that they expect a "do it yourself" guide to be enough.
I bought a 13 inch when the first video on these came out. I just got on the email list for the 16 inch for later on. Thanks for bringing light to and believing in these guys. So far the money spent on them has been far more than worth it.
The stupidest thing about this is that it took THIS LONG to get these kinds of options. Props to the Framework guys for stepping up and doing this. I wish it had happened years ago but I'm happy its happening now!!!
To be fair I meant from ANY manufacturer ever. I get the Framework guys have to iterate. I'm happy with their progress and this is definitely the next laptop I'm going to buy. I just wish this whole idea had spawned years ago.
Could've also been supply issues considering Linus took 3-4 years to release a screwdriver.. but an amazing one at that. A favorite quote of mine from the movie Norbit "Beauty takes time, it doesn't just happen."
That expansion slot could be a game changer for people that use their computers for both work and play. You could slot in a Quadro for work, then after work, swap it out for a GForce for the evening's activities.
I wasn't 100% sure of the Framework idea at the beginning, but this is starting to look pretty nice. Linus you might be part of something awesome in the laptop arena and it's been a long-time sense something exciting has happened to laptops.
This is starting to look worse to me. Yea the premise of the product is amazing, but thats A LOT of different things to support and maintain as an company. Then theres the other problems of how well will the pogopins or whatever makes the connections with the keyboard modules work? Now maybe good, but how about in a year? Fairphone had a lot of easy to swap modules but they want back to normal ribbon cables, partly becUse of reliability.
@@MrPete81 just like a high end office chair has mainy ergonomic adjustments. You set it perfectly for you. The only time you change is during an upgrade cycle. I really hope other manufacturers get on board with the standards introduced here.
It'd be nice if the battery was hot swappable how I remember at least my old ThinkPads did. I love the idea of being able to just bring more batteries so you can extend the battery life. Bonus points if the battery can charge while outside of the PC.
This is actually extremely cool. I love that modularity. I love that you can try it, and if you decide you don't like the layout, you just buy replacement parts to swap it into a different configuration! And of course, I really love cutting down on e-waste.
@@haze782 apple did this in the 90ies. The PB540c for example. Edit i also remembered now i had an acer laptop with gåu port back in 2010. Cpus were socketed back in the days = easy upgrade. The Apple ypu cpuld switch a battery for a cdrom or diskdrive or extra battery.
Had me in the first half...😂. I hope they get a user marketplace running. The upgradeability is a nice bonus, but being able to sell your mainboard to someone instead of disposing it is important. However, I'm curious if they offer a solution to broken parts you are replacing so if you don't have a local way to recycle the part, they can help?
Modules needs to come down in price, or it's too expensive in the current state and until third party modules come, it doesn't super excite me, but I would still consider it after it becomes more available.

My next laptop would be considered to be this. However, I'm not getting a new laptop anytime soon.
This makes me feel like my 9 year old self again when I got my first computer and I was in so excited to use it and learn more about it.
I don't think they have any more spots open for investors.
thats what we call Clickbait.
and im all for clickbait like that
I came in expecting grim news until he said "I even bought one"
When a company can get to the stage where they can sell you a working product of something this unique, that means they they have skilled engineers who are able to create a product and that's the hard part. Once you have a working prototype it's just a matter of scaling up and advertising. So the fact that he swapped tone to say it was better than expected was no surprise at that point.
You're surprised LinusTechTips is clickbait? Are you new here lol

Right?! exactly my thoughts. Not even because i would need it, but to appreciate the extra extra mile they went. That blew me away.
I know, right? That was such a strong selling point. I'd get one if they were available here
i'm sure if they go global and not small scale self selling, prices will skyrocket due to warehousing and man in the middle needing money as well.

(Also I loved the sponsor segue!)
same ha
That level of modularity in the keyboard area is mind blowing. And if that works as demonstrated, hot swap, without turning off the laptop - WOW.
The hot swap is going to be entirely up to the OS. Much of the connections in a framework module tend to be through USB C, so if the OS can handle a USB keyboard it can handle the specifically shaped keyboard module that also plugs in via USB C
According to the blog post the input modules are hot swappable and are using a fork of qmk
Love the modular design! Finally, a company took it on. But my question is, how rigid is the whole unit? I mean, with all those movable parts, it's a question that comes to mind

This is huge for Framework. I'm no longer thinking they are a flash in the pan and that they will keep growing.

- Extra large trackpad
- Touchscreen
- Stylus input
- 120Hz+ screens
- 4K+ screens
- 360' hinge
- free Mini PC bracket with every platform upgrade
- new parts for Webcam, Microphone, Speaker, etc etc
