- A trailer for Super Mario Bros. CD, a MSU-1 based SMW rom hack! The trailer features gamplay running on Super NES hardware using the SD2SNES (FXPak Pro) hardware! Please note that there is a low chance things will be exactly the same in subsequent trailers/demos or the final release.

(Putting this at the top, please stop making Nintendo DMCA comments. Nintendo doesn’t go after rom hacks. Now, back to the post):
I've seen a few of the comments of confusion regarding our game direction as well as a few miscellaneous questions:
How can you support SMBCD? Well, we don't want money for a few reasons including this just being a passion project, and Nintendo getting mad at us. Even if its a rom hack, making money puts a target on our back. Instead, you can support us by spreading the word of Super Mario Bros. CD!
SMBCD isn't a response to Sonic CD or related in concept in any way aside from sharing a common medium, CDs. I'm not upset that any of you associate this and Sonic CD with one another, but I would at least like to get that one out of the way.
Coins are lives are the only things being kept track of this time around, so no score or timer. On top of that, the HUD is only shown when paused or when collecting the respective item. If you collect a coin, it will show the counter for a short while before going away until you inevitably collect another.
The music in SMBCD is going to be heavily inspired by 80s City Pop, so expect to hear some varied tunes throughout the game!
If you have an inquiries or suggestions regarding Super Mario Bros. CD, please shoot us an email at famicomcd@gmail.com or join our Discord (discord.gg/wpSGt5aTuw ).
I think the timer (when not used as a punishment but as an incentive to beat the level faster) and score can both be used in very fun ways if done correctly, sometimes half the fun is playing for points.
Personally, I was imagining an AU where Nintendo used CDs for their console media. =u=
Even if you're not making money off of this, Nintendo is going to shoot it down. They're notorious for tearing apart ROM Hacks and Fan Games regardless of what the intention is with them. I don't see this project going far or even releasing for that matter, but I hope it does because this is so good. The music being inspired by 80s City Pop makes it even better.
Nintendo is less likely to take down rom hacks, otherwise sites like SMWCentral would be gone by now. They definitely know about the site, but they haven’t done anything since it’s start in the early 2000s. I’m not worried about Nintendo.
Also, with the size of our team, I see this game getting to completion. I trust myself as well as the members of SMBCD team to push out but not rush out a finished product that’s polished.
The discord doesn’t work
Welcome to the alternate reality where Super Mario Bros 4 came out instead of Super Mario World.
OMG exactly.
I would have been happy!
It may sound crazy the revelation im about to say to you
@@dmclsl03 Yes I know Super Mario World is considered Super Mario Bros 4 in Japan -___-. But I think the statement still kinda speaks for itself. This more distinctly feels in line with the NES era. This doesn’t feel like SMW. That was more of my point.
I'm glad they didn't just rehash the NES games. SMW was a master piece
If mario didn't exist, popeye the sailor would still be around more often.
It all started with donkey kong
this is the perfect game for Mario's 40th anniversary.
This looks amazing. Watching this makes me think,” What if Nintendo had created the Famicom CD System instead of the Famicom Disk System and remade Super Mario Bros with all the scrapped ideas that didn’t make it due to limited cartridge space.”
Probably the best Mario hack I’ve ever seen! Looks nuts. I had a playthrough of the speedrun on my MiSTer. Will you be including reimagined classic mario tunes in this hack or is it completely new original soundtrack? Either way it sounds fantastic! 2025 is too far away 😂
We appreciate all of the compliments and we’re glad you enjoyed our demo! We’re going to be making a completely new and original soundtrack to fit with the completely new world.
Это потрясающая работа!!! Графика, музыка, дизайн уровней, паверапы - на высоте!!! Жду не дождусь выхода этой игры.
exciting! ill wait patiently for release, seems fun!
This looks like something that Sunsoft would make. The graphics in this game reminds me of “Mr. Gimmick!” for the NES.
This looks amazing. I adore Mario's design here.
This is such a cool project and music is stellar.
If this game doesn't gonna have a cutscene from hotel Mario, I'm joy gonna play it
MARIO IN THE MULTIVERSE
this looks so good!! do you think Mario would be different today if this was an official game that was released between SMB2 and SMB3?
If it was released between SMB2 and SMB3, definitely. No doubt about it. The idea is that SMBCD came out in ‘95, but even then, it would definitely have changed Mario despite World and Land 2 being out by then.
@@FamicomCD i'll definitely be following this project's development! it looks top-notch!
@@FamicomCDnow that I think about it, that would've been technically a better timeline where new super mario bros was never made

This is great. 😄
Now can you do same with "you can do anything"

Finally an 80/90s based fan game that isn’t secretly a creepy pasta
But what if... it SECRETLY is?
It isn’t, don’t worry!

This is so much better than the view count implies. This needs more attention dude, keep it up.
SHHHH, don't. Nintendo will not be happy and will ruin the fun.
This project seems like a “What if?” scenario where Super Mario Bros. 4 was outsourced to a third party and they sought to preserve the original NES artstyle but enhanced for modern hardware.
This is the alternate reality where the CD-I developers actually made SMBW2 like they originally wanted to instead of Hotel Mario
@@raihidara I believe this is the alternate reality where Nintendo and Sony actually went through their original deal of making the Nintendo Playstation and was develop in house by Sony as a showcase of what it's hardware was capable of doing

famicomcd.github.io/about You can find our vision here!
80s and early 90s kids would've lost their shit if they saw this
A man can dream, y'know haha?
im already losing mine
Id assume especially in the west since only Japan got the PC Engine CD add on around the time
I actually let out a sex wee after witnessing this 🫢😍!!
I feel like this game would've made pixel-art games more common in the 3d era
Seeing the Sonic CD more dreamlike type aesthetic in a Mario game must be hella awesome, hoping to see the full version!
The mario design here is very unique, captures the old artwork well
It's closer to the style from the mario 1 era, before the style that started with smb2's art got standardized. Incredibly nostalgic
this is genuinely the most beautiful rom hack I have ever seen, I'm psyched to play this. the parallax backgrounds make it look so classy.
This looks fantastic! And the music is a home run too!!
Thank you! The compliments are greatly appreciated! Also, didn't think it would reach far enough to get onto your radar haha, but the internet is always so fascinating.
I can't wait to play this! I'm now subbed and eagerly waiting to see the next video you release 😁
yoo dude I used to watch your super Mario maker vids
I love these MSU projects. Gives us a glimpse into an alternate reality where the Nintendo Playstation actually came to market.
Merchant Toad: "Fireflower, super mushrooms, 1 up mushrooms? You want it? It's your's my friend, as long as you have enough coins!"
"Sorry, Mario, I can't GIVE credit! Come back when you're a little, mmmmmmmm, RICHER!
PFFFFFFFFT!!!
Seriously though, quit making me want features that'll never exist in this game.
Oh my gosh, it's beautiful. It simultaneously feels entirely faithful to the Nintendo look while also being so clearly CD. Amazing.
I feel like Nintendo made mode 0 the way it is just for you guys. Excellent work, cannot wait for the demo!!!
Feels like that for us sometimes too, haha! I appreciate the compliments, and I look forward to releasing the demo too!
Like they know that the potential is there but they might not get much use out of it before the next console generation, so they made it as such for others who can make use of it later
Yeah, I think it possibly was there to help with NES backwards compatibility basically at some point, which sadly never happened officially.
Although, I know this mode can go beyond anything you could even imaging on NES, even if using just a single Mode 0 layer alone, never mind when using the full four layers to their max.
I certaionly think it's a mode that deservers a lot more attention for sure.
Bro this looks so fricking cool, the Music and Graphics feel so nostalgic, It almost makes me wanna cry(in a good way). I can't wait to play this next year.
AU where Nintendo didnt back down on Sony
This is seriously a dream come true…I have always wonder how a 32bit SNES CD Mario game would have looked like…I love this! And I adore the art direction! I can’t wait to play it!
The Famicom CD was 16bit. Nintendo never planned a home console for 32bits.
@@bluedistortions famicom cd?
@@peenutsbronce upon a time back in the early or mid 90's, Sony and Nintendo had plans on releasing a console together.
@@bluedistortionsthe virtual boy
@bluedistortions the super Famicom cd was 32bit there was no Famicom cd
i LOVE the sonic-esque settings present here! amazing!
This looks like a long lost prototype that got cancelled due to the SNES overshadowing the original NES in the early 90s
Very wholesome, I love the thought of an alternate universe of Nintendo going the CD route like Sega did in the 90’s.
we almost entered that universe but instead we got the "Nintendo Playstation" and Hotel Mario
I love it too! Nintendo should have 2 different super mario sets of games. The regular ones and ones like these.
SNES 32X LETS GO
Loving the Sonic CD style instrumentation here, awesome work.
This looks fresh af.
This looks SO GOOD. I love the graphics and the subtle SMB2 elements
The graphics remind me of a classic sonic game in 8-bit and it looks amazing
Just with a whole lot more overlapping parallax.
Eh not really
Real
The atmosphere and music tell me that this is gonna be something really special in a way that's not easy to precisely verbalize
The sprite work looks INCREDIBLE.
What could have been if Nintendo didn't cut partnership with Sony. but seriously this is amazing, nice work. this need to be expressed by many of us.
Algorithm brought me here tonight and I'm glad it did- this looks beautiful and that it's being done as a hack with its own soundtrack is incredible .
This looks awesome!. The art style, bigger and more expressive Mario sprites, and use of parallax scrolling really make it feel like an early CD game from some other timeline. You captured that fun, adventurous and almost mystical feeling of early CD tech being used in games in the late 80's/early 90's. I've been coming back to this video over and over again, I haven't been this excited over a video game trailer in a while! Great work FamicomCD! Can't wait to play!
What a great looking mod. So many of these are just terrible sprite changes or level mods with no interesting style. This is completely fresh and looks surprisingly tastefully executed. Great job.
I know is not even out yet and now I’m wondering what a Zelda 32bit SNES CD game would have looked like! 😅
this really feels like if mario world was just made on the nes. sure, this is probably doing a lot the nes cant, but the atomosphere, the art style everything feels like if mario world was made with these limits in mind from the start. like the snes wasnt even out yet
This will be my super mario bros 3, because i was born in the 90s so i wasn't born to experience the massive hype that was Mario Bros 3. But this is better.
Damn, seeing this makes me nostalgic for a timeline that never existed 😢😢😢
The artwork and the Sonic CD styled music presented here is so beautiful omg. I can’t wait to play this!
Im in tears, this is amazing. I hope to play it some day in original hardwere in a crt. Nes aesthetics plus SNES unlocked potencial is an amazing combo.
It looks sooo beautiful, keep up the good work 👍
This looks really amazing. Love the music and everything else.
Something about this brought a tear to my eye.
Everybody's feeling out their own alternate history that creates this game in the comments, going off of the immaculate vibes. Lot of people mentioning the Nintendo Playstation already, but even more specifically, to me this is Sony's Super Mario Bros. We get this instead of Hotel Mario.
In any case, it looks great and I am looking forward to it!
I cannot be the only one who immediatly thought of Sonic CD.
You are indeed right
U are not the only!
same, even though I don't even really like that game that much.
@@WarioEnthusiast Well is a 50/50 game well i like it.
gee almost like that was the whole point or sumn....
Finally a game that is a pure normal fangame and not some type of controversial exe thing
Amazing and a 10/10 m8!
Cant wait! I only like a handful of mario games but this looks like one I'd enjoy
the colors are unusually beautiful
I keep wondering what Famicom palette they used
The Famicom had different color tones depending on what TV or Emulator you use
Nintendo RGB PPU which was used in Vs Systems, FCEUX, PAL, Unsaturated, FBX, BVM and Virtual Console Generally looks Ugly
I assume that they might've used Sony EUA, Mesen, Royaltea or Mugicha
I've never been so excited for a romhack
Seems like you took inspiration of Sonic CD. Looks awesome!
its been waiting for 2 years at all.
(2025 V1)
This feels like somebody went back in time to when SMB3 was being developed, then accidentally pushed a chair or knocked over an employee's pot of coffee...
Which is to say that this is a fantastic-looking interpretation of what a brand new NES Mario would look like. Can't wait to see this released!
It's so detailed yet so classic at the same time it feels like out of a different reality.
This has the potential to be one of the greatest Mario fangames ever.
Eu realmente vou querer jogar este jogo no meu canal! Este msu-1 vai ser incrível! 👏👏
ts is what the lost levels should have been
I'll play this over Mario Wonder any day
If the Nintendo PlayStation had been made, this would be a launch title. That's why it was called CD, right?
Not exactly. SMBCD is based on our fictional FamicomCD, unrelated to the SuperNES CD.
this is exactly what i think when i wonder on a smb mania
Wow, this genuinely looks amazing
showelknight of mario ?
This looks absolutely fantastic. Good luck with the project!
Holyy shit this looks soo good... I'm a sucker for good parallax scrolling! And the music... I love the M1 piano!!! I cant wait!!
This game will be the reason I pickup a decent flash cart for my SFC.....
Looks like a fun mashup. The color choices are... rough... like, clashing all over the place... but still... looks fun to play.
Very good vibes 80s 😁
The artwork and music is lovely, very excited to see more of this game!
This is beautiful!
Why does the music sound so beautiful in the trailer? Ps: this actually blew my mind!
This hack looks interesting.
Man, Nintendo has been killing it big time! SEGA has been losing big time. SEGA Saturn is doomed!!
This looks gorgeous
This is way better than the 'x number of sprite hacks or palette changes. Reminds me of the end of TSMB movie, a celebration of the entire franchise. Will there be any references to the 3D games? Would be cool if we had 2D versions of FLUDD in little bite size segments and zero gravity too for example. Little touches like that here and there would make me smile.
What in the f*cking holy world of god's mother?
This looks awesome! Can't wait for the release!
It really looks and feels like SMB1+SMB2+SMB3+SMW in one game somehow.
Here in Australia, we refer to the Super Famicom as the Snoopy Tendo. You Yanks wouldn't understand. There is deep lore behind it.
with the exception of 0:50 - 0:54, everything looks and sounds amazing. That underwater part though is dreadfully hard on the eyes I had to look away.
Thank you both for the compliments and the criticisms! How could we improve the look of the underwater level in your opinion so its not too hard on the eyes?
@mCD i think it's just a matter of contrast or opacity, but since it's a rom hack perhaps this could be fixed by dithering too? And if it's already the case... mixels? Anyways amazing!!
I hope this becomes a reality
@@FamicomCDI thought it looked fine. But if people are having problems with it, is it possible to make a couple of them fade in and out so there's not too many on screen at once? Kind of like a shining effect like how the Mario coins turn/shine on the NES one.
@@KaiserGX Quite possibly. The team is looking into ways to rectify the discomfort, and we will show the progress in a subsequent trailer.
This honestly looks really cool! I hope there'll be some way I can play it once it comes out. Seems like the kinda thing that feels both old and new at the same time. The pixel art is really smooth, and the style looks amazing! Love it!
This looks so amazing, it looks Nintendo quality!
That was beautiful.
I'm guessing Gimmick may have been a big influence?
Quite possibly. :]
Looking forward to the full game when it is released. Good Luck.
I REALLY like the slightly more coarse early 90s styling. Super Mario World is timeless but this feels like a really cool period piece, like you look at this and instantly think early 90s, a similar feeling I got from Arzette
I was 90% sure there was gonna be a time travel mechanic lol
Question: there's going to be a music selection like a US and JP soundtrack?
No. There are too many tracks in the game in the first place to make an entirely new soundtrack (that would be like. 100 songs for just a few musicians). But if someone else reached out to do it, we’d probably have a second soundtrack for the game.
The soundtrack music during gameplay better be as high quality as is in this trailer! 🎉🎉
Beautiful!!!!! Awesome!!!!!
Love and blessings!
Imagine if this is what Mario's Whacky Worlds would have been like on CDi. It might have actually made the console at least slightly decent
Looks more like an early Mega Drive title or a PC Engine CD game.
The PC Engine was an 8 bit console with 16 bit graphics, the idea here being similar.
@@marafolse8347 Oh right, the PCE technically had an 8 bit cpu, nice catch.
This looks AMAZING! Echoes of such a magical era with Sonic CD and such. Looking forward to this!!!
its gonna come out next year just like gta 6. yippy i wonder which one is gonna sell more....
