As someone who was in attendance, TV didn’t do Sammy or the live crowd justice. To say that stadium was electric was a huge understatement. That place was almost asleep from all the country acts of the day. And then the lighting bolt known as Sammy struck
@@ColtraneTaylor wait, you expected government to care about the people? We just need DC to leave us all alone and we'll do fine, like we did for the first 200 years
Farm Aid is held every year. America still cares to an extent. It just doesn't get on the TV like it did when there were only 4 channels for most people.
It seems 1990's and up singers get more press nowadays but older singers and deceased singers like MJ and EVH get mentioned every now and then. 80's was the better decade for music. 90's and 2000's sucks.
I didn't know Sammy Hagar rocked like this. Im 29, i wasnt alive then. I was always under the impression that he was just average, I'm happy that I now understand. Sammy is a rockin machine. Legend.
He was known in my generation as a top-level and by some, the best solo concert performer in hard rock. People used to always say they knew nothing about him until a friend took them to a concert & they came out amazed, including myself at one point. Three Lock Box tour & VOA tour were Sammy at his peak. You can find the Three Lock Box MTV concert, just search. Sammy worked his way up the ladder, rung by rung. He played in cities who didn't play many of his songs. He earned his stripes.
For all of those confused, MTV was not the only network airing Farm Aid. Since it was primarily country, The Nashville Network was really the lead on the feed. This is where the footage and the commentators are from. That lady is country Music Hall of Famer Brenda Lee. For someone of her background to compliment Hagar so profusely without knowing a thing about him beforehand, says a lot about Hagar as a live performer. I'm certain neither Patty Smyth nor Daryl Hall would have garnered such a reaction.
Hagar is a rock and roller, so if that's not your thing, you probably wont like him. But he's a hell of a rocker and a great show man. I've been a fan thru Montrose, his solo years, Van Hagar and beyond. He's always stepped up, rocked hard and showed EVERYONE that he's an amazing talent. He is the Red Rocker and still rocks hard!
MTV didn't air the first two Farm Aids. Those were shown only on The Nashville Network. I think MTV aired edited highlights of the rock performers after the fact, but I'm certain they didn't show them live. The second one, in 1986 I remember really well because our cable system carried the Nashville Network feed just for the one day, and my brother, a country music fan, was upset that it cut off just as George Jones came on.
I watched this live. When they cut back to Brenda Lee after Sammy said Tractor pullin; MF'rs,,, the look of utter shock was about the funniest thing i've ever seen. I hate they cut to a commercial right when Eddie cut loose on his solo but Sammy's performance was by far the highlight of the event!!
Before Sammy, the only people you saw using those headset mics was keyboardists and drummers, which I think is what they were designed for, originally (acutally, they were designed for television technicians, cameramen, directors etc to communicate). Sammy was the first guy in any genre who I saw wearing out at the front of the stage so he could do stuff with his hands besides holding a mic or worry about getting back to the mic stand in time for the next verse.
hell, i'd give $20 in the 80s if i saw this on tv. I don't see Justing Bleeber or the Swift Tayler doing anything like this. Crosby, still,l nash & young, the traveling willburries, the honnydrippers, the Eagles and halen! you had a damn good era of music.
Nothing quite like Bill "The Electric" Church looking like a giant with that tiny Steinberger bass. He was always badass with it in concert, especially on "One Way to Rock" and "Bad Motor Scooter."
They cut the feed early because Sammy Hagar was cursing on live television back then they weren't allowed to do that. I watch this live on TV when I was a kid. And I was so pissed that they ended Eddie's performance like that.
Why doesn't the FCC allow words like the f-word on broadcast TV? Even radio stations have to play butchered songs that have language in them. But, it's allowed in movies that are played in theaters and on pay movie channels like HBO, Cinemax, etc.?
a motherfucking legend. name one contemporary frontman that even comes close to Sammy's energy and talent? ....Well, and Eddie is a pretty good guitar player too, so I've heard ;)
Gary's been playing with Boston for over 30 years now (which means, he's actually spent about 5 years actually playing with them lol). When Sammy joined Van Halen, Gary went to work with Boston.
I remember during live aid the American version had to have a TV announcer just like this. The Wembly stadium version left it alone and let the music do the talking. Can't understand it.
Sammy's always played a lot of different guitars. I remember seeing him play a Roland G-303 guitar on the 3 Lock Box tour, without the synth module that went with it.
