A few years back, Ted Koppel of Nightline did a show on how vulnerable the power grid in America is to cyberattack. Under a region wide attack, the grid would be so damaged that it would take a minimum of three months to get the power back on. He recommended that a family or anyone should keep three months worth of survival food and enough cash to cover the basics for that period of time on hand. This would be difficult for most but may save your life.

I see comments below that basically state: "Anyone who criticizes the unprepped community is heartless!" I am by no means a hardcore prepper here in SE Louisiana. However, it doesn't take a fortune to do some lightweight prepping, such as: 1. some cheap rice, beans, and flour storage for a few days of meals, 2. fill up your gas tank as a storm approaches, 3. filling up the bathtub and every container you own with city, well, or rain water as the storm approaches. I do feel especially for those who, whether they prep or not, find everything they own washed away in a flood or tornado when they didn't even typically live in a flood plain!!! However, for every single down and out individual who loses everything they own, there are 10 who would rather have season tickets to the local sports franchise or own a high-end luxury vehicle rather than put a few bucks away for a truly rainy day!!!

I was ridiculed AFTER hurricane Laura (no power here for 3 weeks) when I finally got my stimulus for starting to get all the parts needed to have solar for everything from lights to cooking to a window AC. I`m poor and had been awarded disability by a judge in July but had to wait and wait to get my account going. I had one chance to get a camper trailer to live in and emergency power. The ones who ridiculed me go to hotels or wherever the generator is.
After a severe storm came through nobody even came to see if I was ok. They went to a hotel but "forgot" to ask me if I was ok. My power stayed on because of the solar but if I had died nobody would care. When Laura was coming they called me stupid for suggesting the power would be out for a long time so nobody prepared or loaned me any money until I got mine to prepare.
FUN FACT: After the ice storm here in 2021 these same people let all their food spoil IN THEIR HOUSES instead of putting it outside in coolers or totes where it was very cold! HA! It never crossed their mind! Imagine THAT!

Yes and no. They had 5 days to prepare or evacuate. Yes, no one could have predicted the extent of the damage. No...because people were in complete denial that it couldn't happen to them and where they live. No place is really safe, and everyone has known dangers geographically. Everyone needs to have a plan and ask themselves "what if". For example, what if this kind of catastrophe happened in the colder months? Could you keep your family warm? I'm assuming people have different ideas of prepping, but prepping is just insurance for calamity. A go bag and copies of your important papers on file should be basic - and the only way to handle this type of disaster is to evacuate. It's very sad. "There but for the grace of God, go I." Praying for everyone affected by this horror.

A good tip for everyone is to try to have cash on hand anytime a potential disaster is coming. There are millions people on fixed incomes who get a check once a month, as well as food stamps. The end of the month is tough for these people already. Bank accounts are low at this time of the month. The generation of power is a science. Gas and solar generators, unless you have tons of fuel and a large amount of panels and batteries should not be waisted on heating and cooling for comfort.
Heating should always be done with a fuel. Wood, kerosene, oil.
Air should be done the old fashioned way. Open the house at night close it up and cover the windows during the day and use fans. Good learning experience forsure 👌.

You can use Pepsi bottles and fill them almost to the top, leave a little bit of room for expansion, with water and they'll help your freezers stay cold. Quick little note if it does get cold you can also feel the same Pepsi bottles with warm not boiling water but hot water and again I say not boiling. And they will act as a hot water bottle.

    • @marilyncausey9348

Should be done before you lose power- if your freezer isn't completely full, add bottles of cold water (with room inside each bottle for the water to expand as it freezes). If you can get them in 24 hours before a power outage, that's good. They'll keep your freezer colder longer without electricity than the open air-filled space in your freezer would have.

It is terrible to live through this, and I am not putting down anyone who has suffered catastrophic loss. However, there are lessons we ALL need to learn. As Americans, we are not encouraged to prepare. Other nations (like Finland or Sweden) warn their citizens to be prepared for at least several weeks in case of an emergency. I think our government doesn't want to scare us, so we are lulled into thinking help will just quickly arrive.
There are resources on the FEMA website for how to get drinking water, but how many of us have ever read them? I didn't even know these existed until after I lived through a flood in Houston! Look at some resources on the net and think about next time...
If you have little money or live in the city, you may need to think outside the box. If you live in an apartment complex, you can talk with your neighbors about a plan in case you lose electricity for a month. Maybe several families go together to buy one Coleman camp stove (buy at garage sales or pawn shops) and each family buys 2 small propane bottles. As a group then, you each buy supplies that can make a big pot of beans and rice, seasoned with canned meat and seasoned salt. Maybe each family keeps some extra soup, boxed macaroni and cheese, and tea or hot chocolate on hand (buy cheap at dollar stores.) Maybe you all store some water in the basement that is rotated out every six months. You can prepare and eat meals together. You can buy puzzles, games, or books for the kids at garage sales or thrift shops. Maybe one family buys a battery operated radio with everyone expected to provide batteries.
These are things you can do even on a strict budget.
If you have a little more money, you can buy a solar generator and extra battery backups so that people can charge cell phones and radios.
If you all have to leave, most of these items can go with you--even a portable generator can go in a car.
You can also freeze gallons of milk. Just pour out a little before freezing for expansion at the top. Allow the milk to totally thaw out and shake it up before use.
If you have to leave, these can go in your cooler as ice and the cooler then goes wherever you go.
Shifting from a consumer mindset to a preparedness mindset is useful--just in case you face an unexpected emergency.

Even the poorest can learn to store food and water like their ancestors did. Economic condition isn't an excuse. There's canning, salt and smoking. People preserved food before electricity. Denial keeps people from preparing. We're all overdependent on electricity. Thinking ahead of disasters, and preparing, is showing love toward your family and dependents. I know people are panicking, but thank God this didn't happen when it's colder...or hotter. Have any of you considered that? Do you have a plan for how to keep warm or cool? At a minimum a go bag with essentials and items for survival. IMHO people wait too long to seek a safer place. If you know you're well above flood zones, preps in the house are the best bet, but you really need to understand the dangers of where you choose to live. How is giving this advice not loving? How is it other people's responsibility to take care of you in misfortune when you don't plan ahead? If you're receiving charity and an outpouring of help - be grateful. No one "owes" you anything.

Even Noah prepared for the biggest flood ever to happen on earth. Why? Because God told him to. Noah had his share of criticism, but he kept prepping, and he was prepared when the flood finally came. Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he shall direct your steps. Seek Gods wisdom in how to be prepared in an emergency situation. Then follow Gods directionn. I live in Florida, and I prepare for hurricane season year round so I don't have to live in fear or panic mode. More than 80% of households are not prepared to survive on their own after a natural disaster for 3 days, let alone weeks or months. Jesus is coming soon. Are you prepared? That's the biggest prep you'll ever make in your life.

There are all kinds of possibilities in the near future that could cause this to happen to anyone. My parents grew up with parents who survived the Great Depression and were the original peppers. Learn what it means and pass it down to younger folks who are willing to learn. We made it through Hurricane Isabel over twenty years ago then Irene a few years later. Listening to the weather forecasters helped us to prepare. My husband was skeptical when I first started filling containers with fresh water because he'd always lived with city water and had not experienced long-term outages. I had grown up in a rural community that wasn't as reliable and we really needed the water that I had reserved. We both learned some valuable lessons and are still learning more about prepping all the time.

I lost my home in a tornado last year, I absolutely understand how hard it is to face the situation head on, all while being expected to work and act as if everything is ok. The last year has been like a dream, just unreal. Don’t let your insurance try and shortchange you, they will with a vengeance try and avoid paying as much as possible. Get ready for shady contractors to approach your property and try and get themselves hired. Wait if need be for a good contractor, at all costs 😭
I never knew how much I had in me until I had to go through something like this. The roof above me ripped off the house, and old massive wooden desk kept me safe. It had been sunny 15 minutes earlier, there was no time to prepare. You will get through this, but be your own hero. Don’t let yourself be taken advantage of. Don’t make the insurance man make you feel greedy, or they are taking pity on you. Their job is to deny as much as possible, period. Nationwide is NOT on your side. Be super smart about the money you do get, and don’t buy things for the house early. Keep your loved ones updated on you, they worry and feel helpless and want to be useful in your time of need. I hope your recovery to be smoother as mine, don’t sign anything until you’re happy and informed, and best of luck

@Morgan Hill Farms Thank you, you explained why the storm was so bad (I didn’t know why) This was my first time watching one of your videos. I really wish I knew what state or general area you are in and talking about. I searched but couldn’t find anything.
Yes, freezers don’t stay cold like the old days. I guess they barely insulate them anymore. I started filling any old plastic bottles with water, leaving room for ice to expand. It really helped food stay frozen! I was trying to “line the both sides with the bottles as a barrier”. I first used empty square Kefir bottles from Walmart. Now I’m thinking (have not tried yet) using square Crystal Spring water bottles (pour some out first!). That way as you cook your food, or need clean drinking water, you have ice water on hand when electric is out and you’re sweltering!
You have a really good message in this video. I wish I could homestead but can’t, too old, no money for property, no family, no car…. I’m safer in my Sr Citizens apt now, I call it “Rot in a box” though. But I’m safe, and focus on my blessings, reduced rent and electricity, I can afford food, have my health. I say my prayers multiple times a day…

Thank goodness I also live on a main highway because those were at least cleared of trees. But once off the highway… it looked like a war zone. Trees down everywhere. It took an hour to go the last 2 miles to the hospital. Crews were everywhere working their hardest. But I made the deadline. Afterwards I was able to get gasoline, ice, and even a sit down meal in a restaurant. Were there long lines?YES. Were some folks behaving badly? YES. Did I want to be out in it? NO. About the AC, you can use solar generator to power a window AC unit. It really traumatized me after Beryl in Houston. For three weeks 90+degree without AC living is brutal. Window AC unit is very affordable compared to the $15K whole house generator ( maybe the only one can really power the central house AC unit). I use it to charge other things now to lower the electricity bill too. And also let it act like a backup power generator to allow us live off the grid if necessary. We are also gonna save up for a tri- power generator. So we can be prepared for the more and more often power outages in our area (TX), for a while this year, it felt like our power went out every other day.

There are many preps that you can keep in your car. Many people can move their car to higher ground or leave the area beforehand. In Houston, some people were trapped in floods and moved everything to their attic. Sometimes you will see flood waters got into the first floor, but the entire house is still standing. If a dam breaks and the entire house is swept away, there is no coming back from that.
What this lady is talking about are people who are
clearly calling or speaking from their homes. These people say they have no food or water. It would not have taken much to fill up the bathtub or buy canned food or other items at dollar stores.
You can even buy a Coleman camp stove at garage sales or pawn shops, along with a few small propane bottles, and they can at least have hot food.
I have seen this panicked attitude many times--having lived in Houston for several decades. We know these events are coming. It does take time to prepare beforehand if you are on a tight budget. You have to buy a few extra cans of soup or boxed macaroni at the dollar store each month. In this way, you can be at least a little bit ready.
We have had people without electricity for weeks in Houston. The authorities are overwhelmed and utilities just get restored slowly.
This lady's message will help some people think about "next time."

Man, 5 day notice for the storm but your paycheck is 7 days away. People who live on a fixed income.. how do you expect these ppl to prepare? I may never be able to afford having a generator, having a solar charger, being able to stock my apartment with food for an emergency because I struggle to keep food in the home during the month. So when you address the public about being prepared it should be to those who have the financial means TO prepare. There’s many people who really can’t afford it.

There are lots of ways to free up $$ to buy canned goods on sale and fill a closet. But most people find it a lot easier to complain about how poor they are and keep on wasting $$. Can't take you seriously when you can afford an apartment and internet 🤷

Absolutely 2nd having a wad of cash for emergencies. No power means no comms means no card transactions. Cash is king in those situations.
Filling the car up as well as a couple of Jerry cans for a generator is so much less time consuming & stressful if done when storm/fire warnings first issued. But add fuel preservative to the generator fuel so it’s still good if not used immediately. Fill propane cylinders as well for cooking. Check the generator & gas stove works.
After the catastrophe, any open food stores will be stripped bare by the unprepared hungry hoards. So do a food shop on the way home from filling the car. Suggest a range of canned food & RTE meals as well as the usual fresh stuff.
Do a scout around the house. Clean out the gutters, trim branches & any weakened or dead trees close to the house. Tie down outdoor furniture. Check the garage emergency door release. Sandbag doors & board up windows if necessary. Fill water tanks & Preposition hoses if defending the house from fire. Check firefighting pumps work. Layout suitable clothing & footwear so quickly available.
In addition to mini solar panels to charge phones, make sure you’ve got plenty of batteries for torches & and a portable radio. (Hearing news bulletins can give situational awareness for when to expect things to start to return to normal.) Check them to make sure they work.
Consider getting an aux power input installed in your switchboard. If you’ve got a generator it can power your home without having to run extension cables & multioutlet power boards. Though depending on the size of the generator, you may not be able to have hot water, run the AC or use the oven.
As an alternative to rushing out to fuel the car & buy a generator, consider having an EV with Vehicle 2 Load capability as your car. When early warnings are issued in the days leading up to the potential catastrophe, there will be plenty of time to charge it up just using a ‘granny charger’ at home. An EV with V2L will power a home 24/7 for around 4 days. This can be stretched to 6-7 days if careful. Power is usually one of the first services to be returned. Apart from making life more comfortable for people at home, it’s necessary for the operation of water & sewage infrastructure. So a key means for people to stay in their home & not overwhelm evacuation centres. Thus it will be given priority for restoration efforts. This means if you’ve got an EV, you’ll be one of the earliest to have your car ‘refuelled’. Especially as damage to roads & bridges take longer to reopen/repair so there can be a delay before tankers can deliver ample supplies of petrol & diesel to the area.
Finally, if you’ve got a caravan, RV, camper trailer or even a tent. Consider re-locating it with a relative/friend who lives relatively close by but out of the warning area. If everything goes pear shaped & you have to evacuate for an extended time, then having somewhere to go will be mentally & physically reassuring. And certainly better than being at the end of a queue of people looking for emergency housing because their home is severely damaged. And of course, if it’s going to be months before getting the house habitable again, you can always come back to your block & stay in the caravan, RV, etc to keep local community connections.
Learnt all this having been through two catastrophic events & working out what I could have done better.

The guy in front of me who just paid said no, it’s the port strike and said we should all prepare. I looked at the cashier and his face looked so gloomy and sad. I realize that some people CAN’T prepare even if they wanted to. They don’t have the resources or funds, there’s no savings, they’re college kids, the elderly, or whatever the case. God is the sole provider and we must pray for everyone to come out of this ok. We must find a way to support those in need during these times, financially, food wise, whatever the case we are in this together and we must love each other and follow God.
