"So jung und doch so alt" is so powerful for Germany, as the current country is 30 years old, or 70, depending on the event that changed Germany massively enough to reset the count. But it also looks back at millennia of history, starting with the germanic tribes that were first temporarily united 2000 years ago against the Romans. I don't think, there is another country looking back at so many iterations.

During all of the middle ages, the churches took a lot out of the country and the people. 10% of your income had to go to the church, called tithing, and abbeys were often the first places to own land, making the common folk work for them (and they were just as hard on the peasants as the aristocracy).
And yes, the schism and the 30 year war were brutal on the commoners, because when the local aristocrat changed his religion, all his people had to change with him, which lead to infighting from the family level through the ranks up to state level.

@Capitalist Pig saying no to a thesis on some rammstein lyrics is like screaming "Ja" during "Du hast´s" Refrain. they make sure to never quite tell the original inspiration to a scene or phrase, making it vague and clear at the same time, so while your thesis is valid, it is naive to tell others with good guesses on it, that theyre wrong. Cause if you were to go and ask Till or any other member if you were right, you wouldnt get a clear answer.

I really enjoy how deep you dive in with your review! And I think this is difficult for any foreigner, while you seem to be very informed and have an understanding for many historical aspects that get covered. I like to give input from my view of a special scene (about 24:00 and before):
    - she gives birth - and when checking who's helping her, it''s not a doctor. That red dress with that special cap! That very much reminds of the robe/suit of the members of the german consitutional court. So ... is she giving birth to the new german constitution - after all that war and chaos?
    - AFTER that time, there's that scene with super armored knights and glowing swords, she's smiling in her golden armor and germania and her knights go and clean out - they're destroying everything, even the people does that in that time - riots, throwing over and melting together the split country, ruthlessly killing the past and fighting everything linked to it - even the roman head will be on the floor (while she just ate from it). So germany is cleaning up with it's past and goes golden, later rises up like an angel or even up into space.
    - IF those dogs are linked to the laws and the constitution germania was and is giving birth to - isn't that showing up how much the judical system has evolved, how much became regulated - with the pride of a mother thats going further from a knight-queen-angel?
I think those mixed up references with nights and golden armor and those fighting mess scenes are all linked together to show the proces of stepping over those cruel and messed up parts of the history, showing how your past can help stepping up and over it and leaving it behind - with efforts.

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space.
Missing in this video, because somebody cut it away (the whole end credits, what is a shame) from the original Video:
The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation.
One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄
    Recommendation for a reaction:
The band "Die Krupps" and their song "Im falschen Land".
Link to my favourite fan video of that song: ua-cam.com/video/Ts-JpeKDRpQ/v-deo.html

As far as I understand, in the very ending, this Germania flies into space not in a spaceship, but encased in a crystal coffin, like Snow White from the fairytale. To the lyrical variation of music of Rammstein's "Sonne" - the music video to that song also features a particularly sadistic Snow White.

  • @alphaomega7191
    @alphaomega7191 2 роки тому +16

Loved your in depth analysis - some notes below
With the symbolism of the Dogs/Wolves it probably means "common people". If you look at where they are presented it appears that "dogs" are likeable and loyal but also stupidly following their masters, the East German Leader metaphorically screws the people, and in the future although it's peaceful Germania still gives birth to dogs opening the possibility of her chaotic destructive influence to take hold again. When we first see a puppy given birth too it's when he says "All of You".
In Germania at the beginning she is cutting the head off a Roman - there are also corpses hanging in the trees. The old Norse religion had things called a "Blot" I believe where they would hang their enemies from trees as a sacrificial offering to the gods. There was also a sacred tree to the Norse religion in the Germania region whose name escapes me right now which the tree probably represents.
6 minutes into your vid - it's the East German Regime post WW2
With the Monks - it's sort of cannibalism because that did occur during the famine of the time period but symbolically it's likely to be more about the various religious figures devouring the land during the Reformation/30 Years War period whilst the common people struggle below them. Between 1600 and 1650 it's estimated the population of the Holy Roman Empire went from 18 to 20 million down to 11 to 13 million. It was essentially Protestants versus Catholics tearing the land apart.
16:28 as someone mentioned It's the Red Army Faction terrorists who committed a lot of criminal acts in the old West Germania - symbolically they take Germania hostage. Till's a woman because a lot of them were women.
The Nazis burn books and the Monks burn witches and the two time periods are shown as one.
The doctor is dressed like a Cardinal meshing the church and secular science. Thematically all the way through they pretty much equal opportunity skewer leaders, governments and ideologies whether they be left, right, secular or religious and this might represent the feeling they are all essentially the same.
25.30 Of your vid - quick flashes showing the endless cycle of chaos, violence and destruction. You'll note whenever Deutschland is screamed really bad stuff happens on screen.
25.40 The Band are presented as dogs which probably confirms the hypothesis that dogs + regular people and that the band doesn't neccessarily believe they are any better than anyone else.
26:00 the dog that almost went extinct could represent that whilst people thought things would improve after those losses the same underlying issues remained. The future looks peaceful but we still are giving birth to "dogs" which the band hold like parents hold their newborn babies.
Outro- it's a stripped down piano version of "Sonne" and the clip for that may in fact be thematically a companion piece to this. In that a cruel corrupt Snow White is in a self destructive abusive relationship with the "little people" her corruption sees her die and be placed in a glass coffin only for her to be reborn at the very end and the last shot is of the little people back at work in the mines slaving for her. Interestingly they cast a "Russian" actress in the role and the band who were raid in East Germany are the dwarves. So it could have the subtext that post WW2 the Russians replaced the Nazi's and looked beautiful with the whole equality for all idea but the East German regime proved to be corrupt and abusive. At the time that didn't appear too obvious but post Deutschland's clip the subtext starts to become possible if not likely.

Dobermans when she is representing west Germany and is kidnapped by the Red Faction terrorists (where Lindermann is dressed as a woman to represent many of them were female). For the birth they are Leonbergers which is a breed that almost went extinct after the two World Wars which is probably a deliberate metaphor. The band themselves are shown walking on all fours ala the dobermans. Not sure which breed it was in the most disturbing flash in the clip - it happens so quick - all I can see is the East German leadership metaphorically screws the German people. Whilst the band is not exactly anti provocative imagery for the sake of provocative imagery that brief flash during the chaotic closing sequences coupled with them being depicted as dogs pretty much confirms the idea that dogs=people.

      @alphaomega7191 2 роки тому

@@darkkratos2000 - I suspect the choice was deliberate because of them almost becoming extinct post World Wars but surviving. Given that the different breeds of dog are likely representative of the German people and the clip portrays Germania as a force of chaos and destruction I'd guess their placement of being given birth in the clip in the seemingly peaceful but foreboding future means that the "Common People may still have the obedient complaint nature that allowed for the chaos and destruction to occur in the past". Given the dense imagery and use of metaphor in the clip I doubt very much the choice of such an obscure breed in those images was accidental and a breed that was pretty much thought extinct but which survived is likely to be the reason they were chosen as the German people post WW2 proved to be able to survive and even thrive and the generations born post the War seem to be more aware of the issues that led to the mistakes of the past but there is still always the concern that something in them as a people might allow for similar issues to rise to the surface again.

It is difficult to convey how torn German society is because of its history. Many other states are of the opinion that Germans can be proud of their country, its achievements and its strength. It is difficult for Germans to be proud of their country, because here one always remembers the Third Reich and patriotism or love of the country are viewed negatively. The song says that means that we the Germans love our country but hate our history and thus a piece of ourselve.

I wanna tell you in few words, what this is all about.About the love and hate the country, She feed us and starving us from centuries and we have died for Her,we follow Her anywhere without question. Many times ,she give us doom but also, sometimes give us salvation. Also ,it is about the greatness and decay of our people in Her name.We did not agree all the time but we have done what she asked and many times she abandonn us.That's why,Rammstein give us this genius song like a reminder. Also, the piano version part it is from the next song ,,Mein Herz brendt''- my heart burns.
By the way, that moment, when the singer point into ,,you'' direction, the right translation it is:,,me,him,us,they,we all are you''

That woman is the living metaphor of Germany.
Black(skin), red(blood/lights), gold(armor/jewelry), those give the colours of the current German flag.
So in the "cannibalism" scene, it's meant to represents the clergy (is what they are I assume) eating (off) Germany.

The scene with Till dressed up as a woman refers to the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). They were a left wing terror organisation between the 60's and the 80's in Germany, who killed many important politicians and economic people and did several bomb attacks and hijackings. Till is representing Ulrike Meinhoff, one of the leaders of the first generation of the RAF. I would interpret the scene as, Germania (Germany as a whole) is held hostage by the RAF. I remember as a kid, the wanted posters with the current RAF members were everywhere here in Germany.

The video shows scenes from over 2000 years of German History...From the Germanicus Campaigns to Germania Magna in 16 AD, to Knights, the Witch Hunt, the November Revolution at the end of the First World War, the Hyperinflation in the early years of the Weimar Republic, the Roaring Twenties, the Book Burnings in 1933, the “Hindenburg" Desaster, the Second World War, the Holocaust, the History of the German Democratic Republic, the Red Army Faction (Terrorists in the 1970's), right up to the May Riots. Ultimately all periods of time end with violence, which runs like a red thread through the Centuries.

The dogs Lady Germania gives birth too are Leonberger dogs., not Shepperds. Shepperds were bred for ... shepperds.
The Leonberger was a dog especially bred for German kings/ royalty. The breed went extinct over time, through modern genetics the breed has been re-introduced.
It is a new dog from an old bloodline, born from the lap of Lady Germania. It's a beautiful metafor.

Hello, im from Germany and i think it's a very good reaction to this videoclip. In Germany many people didnt understand the clip and gave a shitstorm to Rammstein for it.
I mean its a very good representation of the love/ hate relstion to our history
Rammstein also will bring also ever a provokation in their songs and videoclips
A good example for the provokation is Germanla as a black woman, but also she represents in many scenes when she wears gold and red whith her blsck skin the german national colors.
You could say 2000 years of history in a 9 minute videoclip

You speak of "needles" around 21 minutes. You got a bad translation, I'm afraid, or misread it, or indeed both. "Überflüssig" has been translated as "needless", which you misread as "needles", one surmises. However, "überflüssig" should probably rather be translated with "superfluous". Regardless, it's amusing :)
Edit: also, around 28 minutes, you mention "imperical" a few times, which I think should probably be "imperial".
Apart from these nitpicks, I like both the historical analysis and perspective, and the musical. There are a few scenes I interpret differently, but the differences are minor. It's a thought provoking piece, both in terms of the music and the video.

The first scene is dated 16 AD, in 9 AD the Germanic tribes defeated the Roman occupying forces and slaughtered them in the Teutoburg Forest. In 16 AD a Roman Legion returns to the battle field to see what was left and to bury the Romans.
They discover that the soldiers were not killed very respectfully and even nailed to the trees as example for others.
9 AD is considered to be the birth date of Germany because it was the first time several Germanic tribes united to defeat a common enemy. Before there was no unity North of the Rhine.

    History
    ; noun
    1.
The study of past events, particularly in human affairs. "Medieval European history"
    Opposite: The future
    2. The whole series of past events connected with a particular person or thing.
    "the history of the Empire".

It's important to know that the Leonberger was brought back from extinction but suffers from a lot of genetic health issues due to inbreeding. These health issues will forever remain in their very being, their genes.
This reflects the message of the song very well.
Basically, it implies that Germany and its people are left behind damaged by our past, but are striving for survival trying to reconcile with each other even if the scars remain. I can really put it into words, but for me, as a German, this scene hits me deeply in a place I can't explain. Could also be because my family breeds dogs so this part might seem more significant to me than it is.
Thanks for the attempt at interpretation! You did a really good job considering that you're a foreigner with only basic knowledge of our history. Some parts of your interpretation are rather wonky, but very very well done!

  • @baskoning9896

It sums up the good and bad things of Germany. I think the battle in Teutoburg is something they are proud of, as well of the scientific progress they made (zeppelins, interballistic missiles, atomic bomb research). But the negative things are too much: in the end the researchers from outerspace in the future, they dump Germania into space, after they extract the Leonberg dog breed from. They keep the dogs. Throw away the rest of Germany. Because dogs are good boys. 'in the end, the dogs are the only thing worthwhile keeping from Germany' they seem to say. But its art, its open to interpretation.

the "canibalism" / church aspect hints at the 30 years war, I think, since Germany was basically devouring itself, the two conflicting confessions of christianity in particular (protestants vs. catholics), represented by the men of god, even though it was a war for power ofc and religion was only the overt aspect people were fighting for.
edit: dang, somebody just mentioned that just two comments prior to mine...
Anyways, I think you're on to sth. regarding the wolf and German shepard, but I don't think it's a coincidence that Germania births puppies before being sent off for good (Germany becoming a relic of the past and the German people having become docile, and becoming part of the EU as a federal state at some point in the nearer future, or so we can assume).

I think the one big thing you missed is that the red in every scene represents a 'red thread' of violence that runs through the tapestry of Germany's history, making is so difficult for Germans to be proud of their country and its heritage. The dog represents Germany giving birth to wolves, animals that are synonymous with being dangerous, bloodythirsty, threatening, violent. In the World Wars, the dog almost dies out, as does the violence Germany spawns, because it would appear we have learned our lesson. And now, under the guise of new technology, Germany is birthing rightwing extremism once again.

The opening there could be seen more different and symbolic too. The soldiers are Romans, taking the head of a Roman and keeping it may be a symbol of wanting to be like them. Take them to understand and copy them. And according to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus and Remulus, who in their infant years suckled milk from a she-wolf. So there's that to consider too.

Prior to World War I, Poland was a memory, and its territory was divided among the empires of Germany, Russia and Austro-Hungary. In 1915 German and Austro-Hungarian armies seized the Russian-ruled part of what became Poland. After the WWI Poland became an independent country, created in part with land that belonged to the USSR and Germany.
On September 3, 1939, in response to Hitler's invasion of Poland to regain their lost territories (inhabited mainly by German-speaking people), Britain and France, both allies of the overrun nation declare war on Germany. Great Britain started bombing Germany three days later.

I think Rammstein is highlighting the fact that there are experiments on the human DNA being done today not only here in Silicon Valley but in Russia and China. All of us are continuing experiments on seeing if we can create the next evolution of the human species. One popular branch of this study is human-animal hybrids which I think Rammstein is done an excellent job of showing with the woman giving birth to that rare German animal.
