Jari Mäenpää got tuberculosis in military and had 1/4 of his lungs removed , so one half of the other lung is removed .
Other than few basic guitar lessons hes self learned , also one of his inspiration has been Devin Townsend .

@@Wagiii_ You would think so , but lungs are not symmetrical , left has 2 and right has 3 parts ... so if you remove one part you lose 20 % from total .

He didn't lose a whole lung. He got TB while in the military and had part of one lung removed. Sources vary as to whether it was 1/4 or 1/2 of one lung that he lost.
He posted once on FB "As some of you may know, I had a lung operation when I was in my early twenties and I lost 1/4 of my lungs. So touring has been hard for me. Dropping the guitar will make performing easier for me, which means we can do more touring and that's what we want to do."

I thinks it’s 1/4 of his lung capacity or half a lung. That’s where the confusion comes from.
You have to check out "Loneliness/Winter", it's probably Jari's best vocal performance ever. He's belting his little heart out in that one

P.S. Also, he mainly sings the backing vocals too. Even on the Loneliness, he sings the "Angel Choir" parts... Many have hastily though, that it's a woman choir back there! ;D
@@miikasuominen3845 The only one that really sounds like a woman in loneliness is the very last held note before the final chorus, every other voice during those sections is very clearly Jari. I have no idea how he did that female opera sound for that note, or if he just used a really good sample. Either is plausible and perfectly valid and viable.
Just imagine that Jari, the singer and guitarist, composed all of this himself, mixed it, mastered it, even playes the instruments-tracks, besides the drums, on the albums alone. Just impressive
Besides the great playing skills, I'm most impressed by the fact that they all three can sing with clear voices and also growl - and sound good together.

I really like Tomi's clear voice, it's beautiful. I don't really enjoy growling that much, but I appreciate every one who can do it without damaging their voice. 👍

The drummer, Kai Hahto, is now Nightwish's permanent drummer (after filling in for Jukka for the last several years). Also, Jari Maenpaa, the singer, is the genius behind this band like Tuomas is with Nightwish. I think the story is he got TB in the Finnish Army (mandatory service), and had 1/2 of a lung removed, not a whole one. I could be wrong, but that's what I read somewhere. Jari is now only doing vocals, and the other guitarist in this vid, Teemu Mantysaari, is doing most of the lead. They added a second guitarist named Asim when Jari made the switch. And as for the guitar playing, they are all 3 just obscenely good. You should check out the solo to Winter Madness off their first album, to hear what Jari can do. The scary part about this band is that pretty much every song they have is this intense & epic. \m/

Kai still also performs with Wintersun. (Some people seem to think he 'left them for Nightwish')
@@erwinmulder1338 Rolf Pilve has been filling in for him live, and I think there's another guy now. Since it may be another decade before Wintersun puts out anything new (haha), who knows if Kai will even record with them at this point. (I'm saying all of this with a smile, so don't take it too seriously).
Jari (or was it Kai) stated not so long ago that Kai is still working with Wintersun 👍
There's a little bridge here. You guys mentioned Teemu Mäntysaari and Rolf Pilve: they are both in band called Smackbound, and they have a female singer with awesome raspy vocals, Netta Laurenne. Actually it was Netta who established this band. At the moment they are on process making their second album. Hot news is, that Netta is also making an album with Noora Louhimo!

Fascinatlng, what you said about combining false vocal chord / chest voice combination. I always wondered about Wintersun’s Jari’s screaming because it’s so dry and compact and sounds like it hurts to produce 😁 Although always presumed it doesn’t because he’s been doing it for some time and his clean vocals are still great.

A band with 3 legitimate vocalists, and ofcourse they have to pick the guy with one lung to be their main singer. Yup, that's Finland alright.
The main singer Jari Maenpaa had to join the military for a short period and in that time his got tuberculosis. Its not litterally half. But I believe hes operated at like 70% or something like that....

Small correction to what was suggested in chat. Jari Mäenpää had tuberculosis when he was as conscripted in the army, which required about 1/4th (so not half) of his lungs to be removed. It should only affect his lung capacity, not power.

Some suggestions to showcase both his vocal range & prowess and his personality: Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall), Why / Quarantine Show, and Kingdom for EMGtv. There's also Bastard - live at the Royal Albert Hall 2015, which is one of my absolute favorite songs of his. Vibes aplenty. And then there's his Strapping Young Lad days...
Townsend is also big influence for Jari
Don't forget Tatiana from Jinjer, she can switch in an instant from growling to clean voice and vice versa.

I have never understood the hype about Floor and I've been listening Nightwish since the 90's. I suspect that part of the reason is that I am struggling to hear her voice and this happens with other people as well like with my little brother.

I think you should also check out Simone Simons and Oliver Palotai's cover of "this is Halloween". She is the Lead Singer of Epica and he plays the Keyboards in Kamelot, the song is pretty short but I think you have still a lot to talk about to.
Also if you like Sonata Arctica you probably want to look into Kamelot too.
And from Epica there is too much good stuff out there to put it into one list, they are doing Symphonic Metal like Nightwish but different and had a whole 3+hours live Concert with an Orchestra (any live version from the Retrospect show/concert)

Hi Brian, great reaction, thank you. This Band is incredible and I hardly ever listen to Metal Rock. However, when I hear great music, genre goes out the window. By the way, have you heard of Angelina Jordan? She’s a young lady from Norway, now living in LA. She’s 15 yo who sing what I call Jazz/pop music. She won Norway’s Got Talent at age 8. She has about 130 covers and originals on her UA-cam Channel. Please check her out. She released this year two songs, an Original called “7th Heaven” and a cover of Adel called “All I Ask” that would be a good place to start. I hope you have a listen, I guarantee you’ll like her. By the way, last year when she was 14, she got signed to Republic Records. Thank you again. I just subscribed to your channel.

If you want the Swiss Army knife of metal vocals, you HAVE to check out Devin Townsend. He is hands down the most versatile male metal vocalist I’ve ever heard, plus he’s hilarious to boot. Start with “Kingdom” and go from there.
Kai was originally jazz educated as far as i know, somehow came to the grindcoreband rotten sound, recorded 'wintersun' the first album together with jari who played all the other instruments. Nightwish now took him after time 1 because he is basically kratos at this point. After time 1 there was huge struggle with the label and the opportunity was just there. Let's be honest it's good money easy earned for a drummer of his caliber. But i believe he will always there to record the albums together with jari :)

i can do both at the same time : scream and clean mixed.
been a death metal singer for over 14 years now and I can do this, it's not that hard actually, usually when warming up before a show or a rehearsal I do this : make a clean note and while holding it I switch it to a growl. Once I was : "I wonder what happens if I stop in the middle" and turns out that it's actually not that hard when you do just that.
also jaari maenpaa is the singer that inspired me to become one and I used to try and "copy" his voice when I was in the process of learning how to scream/growl

If you want to see a good example of how screaming is done right live video, Suicide Silence - Unanswered by Phil Bozeman. Not a very family friendly song lyrically, don't know if you care about that on your channel. Maybe just look at that on your own and see it for yourself and do a breakdown instead of a reaction. Or just enjoy it on your own!
