- Matthias Schoenaerts exploded onto the American cinema scene with Bullhead in 2011. Since then, Rust & Bone, The Drop, Far From The Maddening Crowd, The Danish Girl, A Bigger Splash, Red Sparrow, and this year, Terrance Malick's A Hidden Life, Steven Spielberg's The Laundromat, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre's The Mustang. He stopped by to chat about it all with David Poland.

The man is the most amazing and accomplished human...5 languages, artist and poet, OUTSTANDING actor and the humility, empathy and intellect just oozes from him...I know of no actor who can say more without words than any other. He chooses very odd characters on purpose just to create the art and challenge himself...his curiosity for life and depth of intellect is astoundingly simple yet amazingly enviable...❤❤ one of our best to be sure. He is a joy to watch, always ...

Matthias at 42 yrs old is so comfortable in his being. I love his evolution. He can hold one's attention just listening to how he thinks. He's a wonderful man.

He is the type of actor I love to listen to in interviews. He always analyzes the question in a deep way and shows so much emotion!

He's very impressive, not just the talents shown in films, speaking several languages but he has the ability to to converse intelligently during interviews 💕 which is a quality many actors are lacking.

He actually explains his craft and how he goes about it. Have been watching more of his work. Often he is the romantic lead. He does that very well. Nuanced performances, subtle variances in style. He is a treasure.
I have watched most all of his movies since he amazed me in Far From Madding Crowd and Rust and Bone ... please catch Disorder, Gang of Oss, A Little Chaos, and Bullhead. I am catching Mustang tonight. He is AMAZING to watch...

Matthias has allowed himself to be a bit vulnerable during this movie. Difficult to know what he's thinking, but he is beautiful to watch in a masculine way. Right??

As I contemplate Matthias' movies, they are role that have to be told. To continue with his audiences's attention, a love story should be intertwined. It's a very strong pull for all the women that love to see him in a romantic love story.
It’s unfortunate when the interviewer cannot connect with the actor he or she is interviewing. Matthias is answering the questions with genuine responses and the interviewer is so superficial with his comments and questions.
The interviewer obviously did no research on Matthias...very sad and insulting. As a fan for 10 years I knew much more and would have asked much more in depth questions... how insulting.to Matthias, his craft and his body of work
right. i guess some interviewers r not used to actors who r able to answer differently and with more depth.
I've admired his work in several films, especially The Mustang, but I hadn't seen him in an interview until today. After watching Far From The Maddening Crowd last night I thought I'd look for one and I'm so glad UA-cam suggested this one. Wonderful interview! I'm much older than him but he gave me a lot to think about in my own life as a creative person. Thank you for asking him excellent questions and allowing him to respond at his own pace. I needed to hear it.

Matthias chooses movie roles that find him in unchartered waters, unless he;s working in Hollywood. As times goes on he will receive more and more recognition. The movie world is taking so many twists and turns. It will be so wonderful to see the Terry Mallick movie he has just completed.
He has great insight and understanding of acting. Well spoken, articulate. The Mustang is not avail to rent as yet. Will watch when it is.

Matthias had a 4 yr classical education in Belgian. He must have absorbed the insights by osmosis. He always instinctively knows how to respond. He's sensational.. No on really knows what he is thinking when he is being interviewed.
He hates interviews but is so gracious, whatever the Country...his father and grandmother impacted his techniques subtly and his curiosity and approach to each character is like his college thesis...

I saw the film The Mustang and Matthias is great bit I prefer him in the Suite Francaise.He is so handsome,so sweet so tender!!!
Wilma Versace he was great in Suite Francaise and Far from the Madding Crowd he was the consummate romantic character. I adore him and he hasn’t had one dud movie yet and I’ve seen nearly all of them except his first one Daens. Rust and Bone has to be my favourite he played that role so effortlessly but then he does with all his roles. He has a gift of losing himself in the character. Bullhead was another one where it’s hard to believe he’s actually acting, that’s the mark of a great actor. He can be something really special and achieve stardom but I get the distinct feeling that he’s not that fussed about fame. He’s a very humble actor, self-effacing and very passionate about his work. I hope he makes many more wonderful movies, the kind you think about long after you leave the theatre.
Far from the Madding Crowd and A Little Chaos are.much better IMO...some of his modeling photos are downright breathtaking 💕💕

Matthias is such a Pro. He must have a serious sinus infection, but he's a little more subdued but still all explanations are so succinct.
It's so elementary David, Matthias would naturally enjoy the acting part and one does not ask anyone about money. No sophisticated person would ask about one's desire about money.

I haven't seen this movie yet and I hope the director, tried to inspire Matthias to embrace and respond on screen to how Roman was feeling and the interviewer is so irritating ralking about all other people and their perceptions. We're here to hear what Matthias thinks and acts.

Julian Perks oh, so he’s now done two Terrence Malick films. I thought he was only talking about his small part in “A Hidden Life.” Didn’t realize the travel he mentioned was for this other Malick project. Cool. Now I know to keep an eye out for it. Thank you! Malick films can test one’s patience. I make the effort to stick with and finish them though because they’re so different, and visually beautiful.

This interview almost screams he plays the character or played the character, Kobe Bryant.
This obviously raises a million questions but before moving there, the similarities are uncanny.
He talks alot sports and playing characters. Yes he is an actor, but the character of Kobe seems like an idealized version of the person he portrays to be.

LOL. There are a few interviews he’s given in the last year or two where he was wearing a ring on THAT finger. They’re here on UA-cam. Viewers spied the ring and mentioned it in the comments, wondering when/if he got married. Haven’t seen the ring on the few more recent interviews I’ve seen him give though, like this one. He doesn’t seem like the jewelry loving type of guy that he’d wear a ring just because. So...maybe he did marry, privately, at some point?
