Your video is good & really helpful to folks because you mentioned to turn off the water completely to the house.
This is exactly what I was trying to find answers too. Thanks for explaining it so clearly.
Glad we could help
The Sharkbite measuring tool is also a deburring tool. Twist it around a few times to cut a taper in pipe so a sharp edge can't cut the sharkbite gasket when inserted.
Very good info. That’s true it does. We use a standard debuting tool so I forget that tool has that capability. Good I for for the DIY homeowner
That’s what I need to do on my water heater shut off valve you made my day thank you
LORETO JACOBA always glad to help
Thanks for making this video it helped me fix my problem
Nice. Mission accomplished
Best video on YT ,
Thank you
Shark bite perfect I really appreciate it life saver
Jose Gomez glad to help
Video was soooooooo helpful... I appreciate you my guy
Love it when a plan comes together
Hi there thanks for the video but why the cold water suply line has a valve ?
Hello you’re welcome. The reason for the shut off valve on the cold is to service the heater and to isolate the hot water in case of needed service. Here in the USA it’s a requirement and standard practice.
Great thanks for the info very helpful video I really appreciated. God bless
Speaking of things that people skip and that is UA-camrs that skip like shutting the water off to the house showing us how you cut the pipe off things like that
Jon Rowell thank you. I had one on my UA-cam channel don’t know where it went. I will reload it
Does the tank need to be drained completely before doing this repair??
In his scenario the connections are at the top so gravity will keep the water in the tank. No you dont need to drain the tank unless your connections are on the side of the water heater where water would be allowed to drain out when disconnected
@@BlueMonster-co7ib thank you sir!!
Thanks
Mr A you are welcome. Glad to help
Hi, when working on the cold supply line, no need to empty the tank? Thank. I am going to replace my cold supply line.
Yes that is correct you do not need to drain the tank as long as the connection is at the top. You will still lose some water so have a rag and a small container ready. Best of luck
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX Thank you,
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX Yes, both of the lines are on the top. Will it work for the hot line too? Thanks.
@@bobhong2175 yes but you don’t have to install one with a valve. They make them in just supply line no valve
so you dont have to turn the gas off to the water heater ?
Not necessary because you aren’t draining the water in this scenario the connections are at the top so water cannot escape from the heater. If you’d dealing with a different set up you may want to do so. Be aware sometimes when you shut down a gas to the control valve it may not relight. We do recommend if you are intimidated call a professional
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX thanks… All I’m trying to do is Tee off of the supply line and run about 18 feet of pipe to feed my pressure washer…. thanks
What’s the draining process ? So you don’t have water everywhere ?
Turn off water to the home. Drain at hose bib outside or inside. I always use a small bucket to catch any water at the connection.
hi charles, thanks for the video. at the ~ 30 sec mark, you mentioned the apparatus isn't a great option for permanency to replace the supply line for the water. what then is a recommended way you'd suggest? thanks!
I would recommend the method of permanency and that would depend on the material your plumbing is made of. For example if in your case its copper i would suggest either a sauldered or pro press method. Those two options are usually performed by a professional. This video is an example of an alternative option. That being said the plumbing code has accepted these fittings as permanent options, however many plumbers do not have confidence in these as long term solutions.
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX would a compression fitting be better or worse than the sharkbite one?
@@88888gerald same
do you have to drain the heater once you shut the water supply?
L B you shouldn’t have to. But if water keeps coming out of the top you may have some water bleeding over into the hot from the cold. You may have to drain some water down to stop that
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX Thank you
U don't need valve for hot side? I wanted one to turn off hot water to work on pipe
Typically you only need a valve on the cold or feed line. There is nothing wrong with a isolation valve on the outlet or hot side. Its just not as necessary or common.
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX so if i need to cut/replace pipe on hot water line, turn off main line and the cold feed? do i also need to drain water in hot water by using faucets to be sure theres no pressure or water still in them?
@@Eastbaypisces i dont drain the water heater i just open a faucet on the hot side to relieve pressure. I dont know your situation if there is a structure above the water heater then water could keep flowing from above. use good judgement. If you are not sure the water is off or if you feel this is beyond your abilities you may want to involve a professional to prevent water damage or injury.
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX only one story , i can turn water off just wasnt sure if hot water will be relieved of pressure from pipe, so just open hot water faucet? gotcha
the shark connectors are a one time deal arent they? not reusable I mean
I reuse them frequently
They need a special tool to remove them or in a pinch something like a crescent wrench and a bit of ingenuity.
How’s the shark bite holding up six years later 😊
If PROPERLY (and that’s the key)installed probably still ok. It’s poor installation that’s gonna cause problems in most installations. Not following the proper steps. However I stand on sharkbite is not a viable option for permanent solutions.
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX thanks for your response! I’ve used shark bite in some minor applications and it has held up. I do agree with you as I don’t love it as a permanent solution. For a novice like me it has helped.
My valve is leaking on the cold water inlet. Can i just shut off water to the tank and unscrew the valve and replace it?
Sorry for late response. You have to shut off the water for the entire home to replace the valve to the tank.
Fixed by just tightening it down a bit
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX and if its soldered in...and isnt replaceable? I tried to take the valve handle off mine and it refused to come off..I got it back together finally and its holding now but this probably wont last..so Im exploring options...
@@88888gerald in that case you have to open the wall under the box and cut the supply lines (maybe copper) install new valves and reconnect the lines
@@88888gerald if you cant remove it then and its soldered on and you dont possess the skills for that task maybe professional help is your best option. You break something off of the valve and you may be in trouble.
Do you have to drain the water heater?!
Daniel Santos you should not have to. The connections are at the top so you will have to determine if the water will be controlled or not depending on your home.
Thank you, I’m just gonna install a valve
On the cold line
@@CharlesShurbetAlohaPlumbingATX cuz my main line goes to different fixtures before getting to water heater, do I turn off water valve at heater too?
@@Eastbaypisces i am not sure what you are asking however if you are going to work on the water line feeding the water heater probably a good idea to turn off that valve as well
Lol. He’s trying to get business. You never use those metal wrapped ones. They always leak. Only use flexible copper
Hello mark. In the video this is described as a temporary solution. I am sure you have many years of plumbing experience I have only been in this trade for 20 years and I have never seen one fail that was properly installed. We replace more copper flexes from pin holes than any metal or braded hose. Thanks for your input.
