- New EV Jeep Avenger 1st look: the urban electric car SUV haters will love. 2023 Avengers assemble! Jonny Smith takes a first look at the winner of European Car of the Year, the Jeep Avenger. With a 52kWh battery and urban range of 340 miles (550km) this is not only the first BEV Jeep, but also the smallest Jeep since the WWII Willys military vehicle. That means it might just be the perfect urban AND long distance compact SUV.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
In a world where too many EVs are too heavy and fat, this bucks the trend by giving good boot size and family friendly cabin in a 4-metre footprint.

Hey Johnny, I just wanted to say that out of all the motoring journalists out there I find your take the most easiest to watch and listen to. Everything you put together is purposeful and easy to digest. Thanks for taking the time to put these reviews together in detail.
I met this host when he met with Honda years ago to review their new city EV and he was SO incredibly respectful of the opportunity to see it a year before release it left an impression with me. This channel is incredibly professional and happy to see the continued success.
I do like the little bits of design whimsy. It reminds you that the Nonvenger was designed by humans, not just some big, monolithic entity. Design for designs sake, lovely.
EVs have totally banjaxed my sense of scale. This looks massive but is actually tiny, the IONIQ 5 is massive but looks tiny. It shows the flexibility of a skateboard architecture, but it melts my little brain.
A lot of these cars are deceiving.
I followed an Ioniq 5 last week and was shocked at just how big the thing was!
New Renault 5 is will also be 4 meters long, had to compare it to other cars to compare size as it looks tiny. Anyhow I like this effect, I do wonder what the future of the bonnet is though, won’t we eventually see many Renault Espace/IDBuzz variants?
Only on pictures though. On the road they just look as big as they are.
Am impressed. Wouldn't normally consider a Jeep but the styling and interior looks great and enjoyable to be in. Will need to see how it rides in a later review but good job to Jeep especially for that price.
I know this is a very personal comment which won't affect many people but can I just say, well done Jeep for mounting the gear selector buttons in the centre console rather than following the trend of mounting it on or around the steering column. As a disabled person, I'm finding my electric car options reducing with this trend.
Rant mode off 😁
03:10 - Nice panel alignment. 🤣
A normal no frills vehicle with a lot of design and thought. Should appeal to many.
As usual JS shows it for what it is and it looks on paper to be a good one. Whispering in a reverent way only helps to draw the viewer in like some art critic looking at a small painting and delighting in finding a ladybird entombed into the plastic moulding.
The loudest thing on the film was the colour.
We all know this 'jeep' based on the stalantis platform / running gear and battery , will cover 180 miles at best in real world driving , not the WLPT 250 odd !
Sorry ( not sorry) to be negative !
Great overview of the design Jonny 👏
Yes! Physical buttons and simple functional design! Will consider one of these in 10ys time when they are within my price range!👍🏼
I've run the 4x4 2019 compass since it came out and it's never let me down. It has 'Easter Eggs' dotted about and buttons and knobs as well as touch screen - the thinking is you can operate the car with gloves in winter. Such a strange concept other makers are unaware of (including some of Stelantis).
Can't believe I'm saying this but I rather like this car, even the colour. Probably the 1st "lower cost" ev where I have no criticism of styling. Much prefer it to the other Stellantis evs and the Korean/Chinese ones (apart from the Ioniq 5 but physically this would be better for me). Good to see prices of subsequent versions could be cheaper. Range if it does indeed subsequently get the figures you mention will be good. All weather tyres and fwd definitely would be my preference and also proper buttons. Currently driving a VW and lack of physical buttons is frustrating. No problems with the name and my 1st car was a Hillman Avenger that I learned to drive in! Look forwards to you eventually doing a proper road test later this year.
I'm with you on the Avenger. I had seen the first ones brought to Cyprus for a photo shoot prior to launch...I'd 'scooped' it with a letter to CAR magazine at the time, writing that the design was reminiscent of the then Opel Olympia......
love this Jeep too 🙂
7:01 The DC charge rate of 100kw is paltry, and you won't get that for the entire charge cycle, so it's actually worse than you think. And that range turns into 185 miles on the EPA cycle. So it's really quite minuscule. No wonder they aren't selling it in the USA.
Looks great both outside and in. As an e208 owner I’m intrigued by it - do wonder though what the real world range will be given it only has a slightly bigger battery and very boxy shape. I’d take the claimed 248 mile range as likely 180 in real life (based on my e208 experience!).
As it stands this will go on the shortlist when we change the e208.
5:24 The reason you often see taillights stick out like that these days is aerodynamics. They use them to detach the airflow from the car. Like "winglets".
OK, interesting. But in dusty climates they can get dirty first.
Bold move giving out 2023's 'car of the year' award in January of 2023
I noticed how you refrained from going full SPOWAATAAH [12:40]! 🤣
I bought this car a month ago, still waiting for build & delivery. Couldn't give a crap about advantages and options and sh*it, but this guy manages to make me actually enthusiastic about a mode of transport.
i'm glad i'm not alone in thinking Hillman Avenger.... it's always more than just a name....
A very nice looking car. I think the range is somewhat optimistic. Overall combined real-world range according to EV database is 180 miles which seems about right for a 51 kWh car
every battery powered devise is optimistic. lets not be naive. almost not even worth mentioning tbf
@@AlbertManiscalco asis every diesel and petrol car. You never get the given mpg figures
Exactly. Less in winter. No idea why Johnny still is impressed by overstated manufacturer claims.
@@West4ea actually my TDIs have regularly bested their manufacturer claims.
Always enjoy your vlogs! Looks good. Price is not horrendous.
Really like the design of this, and I was pleasantly surprised at the price - lower than I expected for a launch edition. If I was spending my own money though I’d still prefer the Niro EV with the 7 year warranty and more proven powertrain. Nice review Jonny
Thank you for watching!
The direct competitor to this one is the Megane for sure
Did anyone else get the very slight, subtle impression that Jonny might like the Hillman Avenger?😉
Really? How so? 😶
@@TheLateBrakeShow no idea fella, it's just a subtle impression. I'm telling you, Jeep missed a trick here when they could of replaced the Jeep badges with Hillman and call it the "Hillman Avenger: Jonny Smith Edition"! I'm like that with the Reliant Regal, you know how every family member has "their" seat in the car, we used to pack them in and so as a kid mine was the passenger foot well. It's the only family car I can really remember.
3:58 Sottozero's are actually sport winter tires. Better than all-season, but not quite true winter tires. I've had them on my Teslas and they're fantastic in rain, snow, and hot dry pavement!
This is possibly the first Jeep I would consider buying. Very tastefully styled, for once, and quite well packaged. I'm sure it'll soon become a best seller.

Rocking the brown velour!
I like the look of the Jeep it’s ✅ing a lot of boxes, and I’d have one just to say I had an Avenger just like my father, great review Jonny 👍
Oh yes, my first car in 1984 was a 1.6(?) Hillman Avenger VVR 659L - so good a had 2 more, each one a bit newer than the previous one. Always fancied a Tiger but moved on to a Mk V Cortina
Technically Stellantis own the Hillman brand - so I'll take one with a set of rostyle wheels and a white vinyl roof please!
Looks great inside and out hopefully it will come to Australia 🇦🇺 awesome review 👍
You can tell its related to the e-C4, Mokka-e and e-2008. That's not a bad thing, I'm an e-C4 owner myself, but there's definitely a family resemblance.
E-C4 is a great car. As you say they have a decent chassis, so it's just the suspension that has been adapted.
Love the simplicity of this design. Much more to my taste than the IONIQ 6.
The Koreans rightly get a lot of attention and praise, but I actually think the Stellantis group has the best looking line-up of EVs in the world.
I think it will be a welcome edition to the EV world. If you squint a bit it looks a bit like that new concept Renault 5. Really enjoyed your MG4 review. I placed an order and got a MG4 SE SR in Camden grey. Should get in march. Thanks for all the great content🙏👊
It reminds me of my 2015 dacia sandero stepway - in a good way! I love the looks, usability and range.
It was so strange every time you called it an Avenger. I agree, there will only be one true Avenger. The Hillman Avenger.
That is the first Jeep I think I've ever seen myself considering. It looks really well thought through and will be priced well for an EV
have to agree about the name, my first car was a 1500cc Hillman Avenger so for me too there is only one, still it's a nice SUV with a decent range but I bet it can't tow and if it did what would be the point as with half the range you could never get anywhere. Good 2nd car for the people who can afford it but for us who can only have one I still need a good practical petrol car that's able to tow a caravan and has a range of 500 miles (250 when towing). Car of the year !!! I don't think so.
I really like it, especially that colour. Never lose it in a car park or a muddy field. Can’t wait to try one out 😬
Sometimes Jonny's hushed tones are practically ASMR... Could be a thing JS?! I really like the way you take time to appreciate car design in your reviews. There's a lot of clever thinking going into cars these days. A new 'golden era' or designers breaking free with EV s...? I like this Jeep. Even the Avenger model name suits it, especially if they do a matt black bonnet with stripes version...
Well you cannot just put 1.9 tdi engine anymore and thus justify ugly looks, with EVs design is of utmost importance.

I test drove one at the end of July and I loved it so much we ordered straight after. It's the first car in 30 years of driving that I'm extremely excited about getting.
I learnt to drive in a mark 1 willys jeep. Crank handle start. No synchromesh. Total nightmare for a learner. Loads of fun.
Hey Smithy. There’s only one Avenger worthy of the name and that’s the 60s/70s TV series with Jon Steed and Dianna Rigg.
I ordered a BYD Atto 3 and the voice control works really really well in that
If those dimensions are accurate then it's smaller than a Kia Soul. That surprised me and makes it a credible alternative that fits in a standard single garage
It is v small.
Once again a fabulous review, I look forward to a driving review once they release it for sale. I live in Canada and sadly, at least for now, this won't be available here. While I prefer a smaller vehicle, most here and in the US feel 'bigger is better'. Thanks for your review 🙂
I love the 'box on wheels' vibe of this car. It's as close to an electric Jimny as you can get right now I think. Though the one I'm really interested in is the 4x4 one.
Cobalt Mining for EV cars. ua-cam.com/video/CIWvk3gJ_7E/v-deo.html
Good looking bit of kit 👏👍
Those easter eggs are a fun addition
Kendal Peugeot did a BOGOF in the mid ‘90s. If you bought a 5xx, you got a 2xx free.
I've watched your video about 10 times now because I've ordered one and am waiting for it to get built and delivered. Should be here by mid to late October!!!
To me it looks like a more stylish Dacia duster, and I mean that in a good way. I really like the design.
Depending on price this could potentially replace our E-niro as the family second car when the lease ends for that next year.
If it’s a jeep it needs a 4x4 option, so hopefully that’s in the pipeline.
I spent the whole video thinking, why is he talking like he’s in a library? Car looks pretty nice though.
Loving the Avenger Tiger hat/cap
Thank you. Available from the ASOC (Avenger Sunbeam Owners Club)
Thank you for 'the first off-roader'. Music to my ears.
Thank you Jonny long live the Hillman Avenger.
I agree about the design being nearly the prettiest jeep of all time, however its just shy of perfection. i have to subtract points for the front wheel drive overhangs. other than that and the fact that the 2WD was released first i really like it. my last Jeep was a Comanche which was a brilliant little pick up truck. especially in manual 4.0L I6 guise. faster off the line than a 5.0 mustang in its day due to shorter gearing.
When the build quality is ok this Stellantis car will be cranked out in huge numbers in several factories across Europe!
Beautifully shot in the studio. Lovely production. 👌🏻
good looking car, I like that the design feels fairly understated, simple yet elegant, hits the spot for me
honestly never been interested in a jeep before this one
the market is starting to fill with nice evs to choose from
now, if only the price (of evs in general) could drop some more...
I suspect it’s been chosen as Car of the year because several manufacturers can then benefit from the Kudos that it brings when they release their own versions on that platform. I will cling to my classic petrol driven cars for as long as I possibly can but I must admit this has got me a tiny bit tempted.
@@Moody_Blues_ Ah ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. Guess I’m getting over cynical in old age.
I was totally convinced the VW ID Buzz would be the Car of the Year and was very surprised when this took the title instead. I watched this in order to maybe understand the choice a bit better, but I still don't get it. Yes, it is most likely a very good car - but what makes it the Car of the Year??? I still think the ID Buzz is a more compelling car...
That's a decent looking car, would definitely consider it if I were in the market for a crossover. Good to see that pricing is more in line with the rest of the market, the thing I've always disliked about Jeep in the UK is that they're hugely overpriced in comparison to their US price.
and they're already hugely overpriced here in the states so I can't imagine what it's like there
that's a nice looking Fiat Panda
Great video and review. Nice looking normal size EV. On the shortlist when lease expires.
Wonder if you can get it in the classic Jeep Green
Beautiful car! But car of the year without anyone driving it? I thought it was a serious award.
Looking seriously at this for the replacement to our Fiat Panda 4x4 which we’ve had, and loved, for six years. It’s been a tremendous workhorse for us. We want to go electric, and there are few vehicles which tick all our boxes … we live in Greece and are olive farmers. The only thing we can’t ascertain definitely is, will it tow a trailer. We need a trailer to take our olives to the press each year. Apart from that, the ground clearance, size, price and everything else make it a perfect vehicle for us. Thank you for your informative review. You’ll just have to let the ‘Avenger’ name go, and move on 🤣
Like the look of this Jonny will take a look when released thanks
I agree with you, I think it’s the best design they’ve ever come up with; front end is perfect to my eye.
Seems everyone has forgotten about the 95-00 Dodge Avenger Coupe then it was replaced by the Stratus then the Avenger came back as the 08-14 as a 4 door. My wife and I were quite intrigued by the new Jeep Avenger and were really interested in buying one for a little city car for my wife to commute back and forth to her work but as you mentioned it isn't available in the US Market as I could see this selling quite well and would have been a perfect companion next to our Jeep Renegade. Funny you mentioned Hillman Avenger and even then it was built by the PSA and Chrysler back then but it that car did make it to the US Market as the Plymouth Cricket. Funny how the Avenger nameplate has come full circle once again
Jonny - we have an e208 so basically the same platform and on the voice control front I expect the same software.
Only use voice control for phone calls - it’s okay but doesn’t always work. Pretty much any other command is a waste of time! Great little car though.
I really like it. Looks good, seems well designed for family living and that range. Great review Jonny.
That is a good looking version of its sister cars. They are all pretty good, with the same limitations. The only things that differentiates them is badge and finish.
Good review 👍 I'd like to see a three way review of the Citroen C5X, Peugeot 408 and D.S 4. They're all Stelantis products, similarly priced and each claiming to be a new genre of body style.
I had a play in a few of these at the Paris Motor Show back in October. Quite likely this exact car. I was very impressed. A European Jeep - what's not to like!
Jeep did a good job of picking the launch colour for the Avenger, it works well with the clean lines of the car. The front end styling says Jeep without leaning into Jeep styling traits too hard.
3 colours in the UK 1st edition.
SottoZero 3 are winter tires mate!
Speaking of Avenger - I didn't expect it to be released. It looks really nice and it's not gargantuan
Looking very nice (except for the insect magnet color), very nice size, I think it is a winner.
It's always great to watch jonny. I'm not going to EV until I have to, but I always enjoy watching your channel
Cheers v much for your honesty Matthew.
I will definitely go for this. Appropriate size for a city car and it has the looks.
Thats a well designed car! And that paint reminds me of the 'liquid yellow' from the Renault Clio sport
Beautifully produced film JE 👍😀
Many thanks - tight turnaround for the embargo, these.
First we had a Hillman Avenger, and a Chrysler Avenger, afterwards a Dodge Avenger, and now its a Jeep Avenger from Poland based on the e-2008 and Mokka-e. But it looks pretty nice !
And who could forget the Talbot Avenger!!
Incredible design. I love it. The color is 10/10
Nice looking car, and I like the size. I can believe 400 km (250 miles) range with that size battery for low speed driving in the summer, but not at highway speeds or winter. Our ID.3 has a little bit bigger battery and can do 450 km in the summer when going below 80 km/h.
What I have read for the Astra and 308, this should be Version 2 of the Stellantis ePlatform with an improved efficiency...therefore hopefully the range is true
@@josefv8708 Ah, I didn't know they had a second version of the platform already. That would make the new Stellantis offers much more interesting.
It’s a bit ironic that the iconic jeep plaque has round headlights while this one has boxy headlights…
Yes, true. It's good though.
@@TheLateBrakeShow I love the looks and the size! of this jeep.
Great walkthrough as always 👍
Funny: the magnetic cover from the central console was there in the Fully Charged "review". Jack kept waving it around. Did Stellantis take it away? 😆
Jack stole it. He is a well known criminal.
Another great review. Thank you for your details. It's very appreciated. It is a nice Jeep but I have my heart set on the Polestar 3.
That was a subtle SPOWTSSS there Jonny...
You mentioned the Avenger name was also used on a Mitsubishi based coup in the late 90's to early 2000's sold as a Dodge. By the way your only one Avenger/Hilman here in the states was sold as a Plymouth Chricket!
Best looking JEEP sold in Europe since the late 90's... and another great review by Joony Smith.
Many thanks Chris. Really intriguing car, this.
Hi Jonny, this is the second you tube clip that I've watched of the European car of the year, both on the same filming set. It's January so another 11 months of the year to go and it is COTY. Who has driven this thing? It's only available for pre order in the UK and not even available in the US. Sorry for being cynical but I think I'll reserve judement until there is some real world data in.
I've never been interested in Jeep before, but this looks really good.
Great little car. If 4,1 m long and all of the 10 cm extra gone for 2nf row - perfect. As it is - will do with kids. Don't mind hard plastics. Mr Smith - as always - brilliant content.
I own a yellow & black Renegade, it's far from perfect but love it, plus its' got its own bunch of Easter eggs (check in the filler cap!). I'm not in the market for an EV right now but I like this :)
Another good video on the channels 👍👍
Despite Stellantis saying "they can't make EV's at a profit" they have allowed their designers free range to come up with some great , simple, family EV's. Fiat, Citroën, Peugeot, Vauxhall, Jeep... Have ALL got some lovely practical EV's.... That actually work. Unlike VW who can't make software that works and insist on customers waiting a year + for their cars!
Cross climate/ all weather for the win. For most cars
Has a lot going for it. looks, size, practicallity, etc, although it would be nice if it came with V2G.
