Enjoyable as always. Hard to believe that the Up! has been in production for almost 10 years, it's chunky and balanced and doesn't seem to have dated. What puzzles me though is why it's not sold with infinite customizable options like the Mini. Since 2011, I've been trying to raise finance to produce a range of add on bits to personalize it but so far, Up! Yours is but a dream. Stay safe.
Selling points - real gauges (Yeah !! ), no touch screen (Yeah !! ), small and prolly handles well. Needed options, more battery, heat pump, and more motor. Need a GTI version :D Size - perfect for a commuter. Now we would like to hear more after your week of whizzing around ...
Unlock the car with the keyfob to remove the charge covers. “Filler flap” is not locked, seems the covers themselves are. e-Golf locked the flap. I broke our lock off, since in winter it freezes over.
I suspected that the eUP was using the cars Charge Cable locking mechanism to retain the charge covers since they sounded to be made of hard plastic not the usual rubbery stuff. Well done VW good solution but pitty you didn't mention that to Jonny
Nice review. Getting our new eup in a couple of days! White, with almost all extras and a 3 years service plan - cost around 14-15k GBP with current currency rates and government "discounts" here in Norway One of the biggest downsides to this car is the rapid charging. It says 40kw on paper, but in real life situations its really quite a bit slower... And that is kinda a dealbreaker if you are planning to use it on longer trips. It's like vw didn't want to make it too good(e.g charge fast enough) to sell more of the next gen cars...
It vary depending on an outside temperature. They say it runs good above 10°C. It is caused by lacking heat pump. In lower temperatures the battery pack is too cold for rapid charging.
I find that with VW's, what is hard plastic is actually really well finished and processed, no gaping holes anywhere, no squeaks or rattles. Then again, this is from a country where perfection isn't quite good enough.
vw/audi have always best interior quality, i will say this again. i owned or drive many brands (bimmer and merc included) so i'm not just talking nonsense
50% of the current orders for the UP are eUPs...means a loooong wait time...and huge success. Read that the entire 2020 Production is sold out and production is on hold at the moment anyway...even more wait Time. I think if you plan to buy a Golf you usually plan it as first Car...means ICE...if you plan a for a second Car you plan for an UP, which perfectly fits for this purpose and explains to me the order success of the eUP.
Might of been a good idea to read the user manual before trying the physical stuff. You can't just pull off the caps ..it's a security feature so kids/yobs don't stick mud and twigs in the female connectors when the car is parked.
I love how you go folding key (that hurt) and stick first and THEN ask yourself 'am I doing something wrong here?' I love the eUp. Finally an EV that makes sense.
@@piusmartin5178 Indo not understand the "what do you expect" part of your comment. I was not expecting anything. Did my comment offended you in any way?
The Up! has a really stripped-back interior, but actually it's not that cheap. I have a regular Up! and a car that costs 10x the amount the Up! cost, and there is nothing in the £80K car that I miss in the £8K Up! If you connect your phone to the Up! you get a lot more diagnostic info, and really as much 'entertainment' as you would ever want in a car, and you just use Android Auto or CarPlay for maps, reading messages etc via the car audio, and of course google maps and google voice assistant work way better than any in-car system ever does.
@@slhslh9038 You won't use Android Auto or CarPlay since there's no screen to show that. Instead, you'll be simply using your actual phone's OS, which while driving can be much more distracting than Android Auto or CarPlay. I'd LOVE for them to actually provide a ca. 5.5-6" screen for actual CarPlay in those cars. Sure, it'll cost a bit, but they could just offer that as a higher trim level.
I've been hoping for a UA-cam comparison review of the eGolf and the eUP. That you should do it Jonny, rather than some of the UA-cam clowns, is a bonus. After watching both reviews, I think I'm more inclined to buy a second hand eGolf which has adaptive cruise and an automatic parking brake, plus of course, LED headlights and a heat pump option.
Yes I loved my eGolf it's much better but make sure you have the CCS charger and the SEL model. Amazing car for sure, not sure what VW was thinking with this rubbish
The 2013 E-Up does have DC rapid charge! You also press unlock on the keyfob to release the charging caps. I was shouting at the screen when you got that stick out!
for me this is the most appealing of all the EV-s now. I like everything about it really. (don't like the company tesla, don't like tft dashboards, don't like large cars, see the infotainment more of a burden than a feature, etc)
Inaccurate info Jonny - the original e-Up! did have CCS charging socket. I owned one for 4 years and it was faultless. What was that nonsense with the stick! The car must have been locked, and the charge socket covers were locked on.
Great work, loving the content. Would greatly appreciate a Jonny Smith review of your Jimny - need your, um, unique, car-centric voice and reasoning. Please!
Good review. I had a second hand e-up! until it was stolen in 2017. Last year I bought a brand new e-Golf. I have to say, that while the e-Golf is a pretty nice car, I always have preferred the e-up! That may sound strange but that's just me. Even when I first did test drives back in 2015, I found the e-Golf a bit heavy and cumbersome while the e-up! has always felt zippy and fun. I'm seriously considering switching back to the latest version of the e-up! One factual point: the e-up! has always had a CCS port and DC Rapid Charge capability.
I would buy one, but one small issue.... Lock Down week 4 about to start here in France, so no visits to the dealer just yet! Thank you for your sensible no nonsense review Jonny
Yes I do own one and I am taking it to Corsica from Germany for a 1.300km trip. Took out the back seats to fit two peoples luggage as well as diving equipment.
so, how it went? would love to hear 1st hand experience ion longer trips, specially on seat comfort, charging etc. also, is it snappy enough for some b road overtaking? thnx

Not just the expensive, flashy, shouty ones. This is just highlighted by these videos. The vlogging format needs a bit of practice but other than that, top content! 👌
If i would go for a spartan VAG EV i would go for the cheapest of the 3, probably the Skoda. They also offer funkier colors like canari-yellow and Skoda-green-metallic. Good value for money. I seem to remember that in the Seat cruise control is an optional extra.
It's not an anti-Tesla EV it's complimentary, not trying to compete against Tesla ( that hasn't worked out great yet) but goes for a different part of the market. The more EV's the better.
When you say the rear windows are pop out for cost saving, isn’t it actually the shape of the rear door means you can’t wind the window down without it having a massive fixed quarter light.
I would go for this eUp rather than eGolf... Maybe I would wait to buy it with few miles and even cheaper. Thanks for the honest review Jonny!! Good luck to Great Britain in this hard days. Stay home, stay strong. Greetings from Spain.
Johnny, as with the "missing" USB, I'll advise you can find a sunglasses holder of sorts inside the glovebox :) (not quite as stylish or accessible as a little roof cubby but still)
Great website Jonny. A man of many talents. Thanks for the e-up! review. Love the odd expletives. Yeah, you have to wait after you have opened the door with the clicker or hands-free on my e-golf to hear the servo motor zzzz-clunk to release the cable from the socket. I'm surprised they did the same for the caps. I had to re-jig mine on the e-golf to keep the retainer strap in place as it pulled out early on. No biggy. I'm waiting for either the ID-3 or the Buzz. My heart is pretty much set on the Buzz, as I plan to spend a fair bit of time in it touring when I start to retire out of full-time work. I aim to do some EV touring and see how many charges I can get for free as I travel throughout Europe.
We had a Lupo, it was by far and away the best small car we've ever had. Used to run up to Chamonix from Geneva in the middle of winter, no sweat, went everywhere.
"little" EVs tend to be four seat simply to help them pass the heavy load gradient tests! Part of the OE tests is to ensure the car can cope with being fully loaded (occupants and luggage) and still pass gradability and kerb climb requirements. With only 4 seats, that test is 20% easier!
@M Bacon And where do you think that "stated load" comes from? yes thats right, it's set by the OE, by carrying out lots of tests (tests which incidentally as a vehicle devleopment engineer i have done for the last 20 or more years....) and in order to apss those tests, typcially "Low power" EVs get down graded to being 4 seaters, simply to limit GVW, which means the test requirements are less stringent. For example, the "kerb climb" test, carried out by all OE,s requires the vehicle to be sit at 90degrees to a standard height kerb, with both front wheels touching the kerb, and to be able to climb up and over that kerb, without a "runup". For an EV can only ever make the torque the motor makes at zero speed this is a difficult test when fully loaded! Conventional ICE cars can slip clutches, use torque converters to increase wheel torque, and even be abused by simpyl reving the engine up and dumping the clutch (ie using the engines inertia to generate extra wheel torque to get up the kerb. Evs can do none of those things, the motor makes max torque, and they either climb up or they don't !!!
Great Video, love the e-Up! BTW...that rubber seal on the driver's door for the window was not in the correct position, I couldn't get over it, I kept watching it for all the lenght of the video, OCD way...
I bought a Lupo Sport as a stop gap car after selling my Golf 4motion as I like to change cars every year or two....7 years later I'm still driving the Lupo, It's that good. Way underrated car.
So Jonny, what was the deal with the plugs in the back, you needed to press a button or what? Really looked like you were getting worked up over it, funny!
Pip Stein Also like many (most) ICE cars... the “filler” door locks/unlocks with the main locks. I guess Jonny doesn’t often do his own fill ups? 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Well, the filler door opened so the car was obviously unlocked, so the disconnect here was just that the caps lock back on after about 45 seconds after the car is unlocked. Not the same as a petrol car at all, the flap is open when the car is open and you can open the filler cap when you please.
Nice review! I’m actually considering switching from a 2019 e-Golf to an e-Up! The Golf is very good, but we don’t need more than the e-Up has to offer.
I did not expect the channel name to be so appropriate. But back on topic. I still believe the Golf GTE is the best value car. Sportive, 40 kms of full electric range and long range petrol capability. If you need to do short or long trips then that one wins by miles. In the short-medium to medium-long range this may be great. But it is skinny and as you said has very similar cheaper options. However, a new e-golf (why do they even bother) is coming around this summer and the ID3 will be finally here at the end of 2020.
Completely agree with you about the Lupo and Fox - the Seat version of the Lupo (forgotten the name!) was great value, the 3 cylinder diesel was so frugal - my Brother ran one for a few years. I like the Up, the 5-door is the best option anyway. I do think £19k is too much for an E-Up though, especially when you can get the funky BMW i3 120Ah new for under £30k if you shop around. Better range, lovely interior, LED lights, keyless start, and it will never rust or look boring - but then I'm biased, I love my i3.
> the Seat version of the Lupo (forgotten the name!) was great value, That would be the Seat Arosa. I know one that is still running strong after 2 decades. :)
I had a test drive in the Seat mii electric some weeks ago. It had a snazzy graphic in the dash board and some how looked a lot nicer in side than the VW eUP. I loved how it drove but with 75% battery, an indicated range of 90 miles having done 30 miles, suggested a real world range of 120 miles. I came away loving the car but felt, for all the cost cutting, that it is over priced at around £20k. Now at £17k to £18k I think it would be a winner.
Using a twig to try and remove the charging covers 😂 no screwdriver in the boot? Anyway, nice review Jonny. I drove the first gen e-up! In Wolfsburg a few years ago and really liked it. Lovely little car. If I was forking out my own money to buy an EV, the new e-up! would probably be my choice

Jonny mate. Your child's recaro in the back, remove the rear head rest the seat is fitted against. It will fundamentally effect the seats absorption abilities especially in front / seat impact situation and cause it to buckle in a rear impact. You will find you can flip the head rest 180 degrees and it will allow the seat to sit flush better.
The recharging caps in the back are locked, which is why you could not open them. All you need to do is use the fob and press unlock button which unlocks the caps, for recharging. Much easier than trying to use a stick to pry them open.

So glad you had access to Matt Watson’s“Stick of Truth” to jimmy the CCS open.
I hope Mat doesn't file a lawsuit on the twig front.

Need a GTI version :D
Size - perfect for a commuter. Now we would like to hear more after your week of whizzing around ...
Back here after the smith and sniff podcast 😁
Unlock the car with the keyfob to remove the charge covers. “Filler flap” is not locked, seems the covers themselves are.
e-Golf locked the flap. I broke our lock off, since in winter it freezes over.
I suspected that the eUP was using the cars Charge Cable locking mechanism to retain the charge covers since they sounded to be made of hard plastic not the usual rubbery stuff. Well done VW good solution but pitty you didn't mention that to Jonny
Random thoughts:
1. Good to see that VW is still using the same key design as my 2004 Jetta.
2. You look exactly like my friend, Dave.
Nice review.
Getting our new eup in a couple of days! White, with almost all extras and a 3 years service plan - cost around 14-15k GBP with current currency rates and government "discounts" here in Norway
One of the biggest downsides to this car is the rapid charging.
By heck that's more useful than the previous model! I just about managed to get 60 miles out of the previous e-Up!!?!!
Jonny, for the sake of you child's comfort: remove the rear headrest, before you install the child seat.
It's also must be done due to safety - RTFM! :)
Looking forward to your chat with Ian Seabrook (HubNut)... You sir ..are a star
Might of been a good idea to read the user manual before trying the physical stuff.
You can't just pull off the caps ..it's a security feature so kids/yobs don't stick mud and twigs in the female connectors when the car is parked.
Re watching because of recent s&s episode, the fed up sounding intro with the golf at the beginning is amazing.
I have a e-up 2014 with ccs and it’s good for 48 kw. I also have a Tesla model3 and I love them both.
I love how you go folding key (that hurt) and stick first and THEN ask yourself 'am I doing something wrong here?'
I love the eUp. Finally an EV that makes sense.
Just notice, the 2013 e-up! does have CCS capabilities. also, to open the charge flaps just press the unlock button on the key :D
It was soooo funny seeing him getting angry at the car though, wasn't it?
@@Soordhin oh yeah . i would never poke around like this on a car that's not mine. too funny to look at
That has to be the cheapest, most spartan interior I habe seen in many years wow. Reminded menof an old Renault 5 or a Lada.
Well it's around 13.000€ after subsidies (50% is paid by the carbuilder) in Germany.
What do you expect?
@@fryke You can Just Install the Android Auto App and it works on your phone
I've been hoping for a UA-cam comparison review of the eGolf and the eUP. That you should do it Jonny, rather than some of the UA-cam clowns, is a bonus. After watching both reviews, I think I'm more inclined to buy a second hand eGolf which has adaptive cruise and an automatic parking brake, plus of course, LED headlights and a heat pump option.
Yes I loved my eGolf it's much better but make sure you have the CCS charger and the SEL model. Amazing car for sure, not sure what VW was thinking with this rubbish
Just have to hit the unlock button on the key to release the covers 👍
Bollock Porridge - Class!!!! Great video again young man. keep em coming.
The 2013 E-Up does have DC rapid charge! You also press unlock on the keyfob to release the charging caps. I was shouting at the screen when you got that stick out!
I am stupid. Sorry.
Hi Jonny, always appreciate your style of a car review. It’s very personable yet informative. Would be nice to see you review the pre-owned EV market.
for me this is the most appealing of all the EV-s now. I like everything about it really. (don't like the company tesla, don't like tft dashboards, don't like large cars, see the infotainment more of a burden than a feature, etc)
I love that the UP! has big side windows, It seems most modern cars have tiny side windows that swoop upward at the rear
I love my UP! .
I would buy one, but one small issue.... Lock Down week 4 about to start here in France, so no visits to the dealer just yet! Thank you for your sensible no nonsense review Jonny
Great review. Can't wait to see who's next in the ecar line up
Yes I do own one and I am taking it to Corsica from Germany for a 1.300km trip. Took out the back seats to fit two peoples luggage as well as diving equipment.
so, how it went? would love to hear 1st hand experience ion longer trips, specially on seat comfort, charging etc. also, is it snappy enough for some b road overtaking? thnx
I'm really liking the car pervert channel. I always likes Jonny on Fifth Gear, he always came across as the most genuine presenter, with a passion for all cars.
“Bollock porridge” 😂 love it
So do I actually,..but I am also trying to envision that too!
u love it?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
It's not an anti-Tesla EV it's complimentary, not trying to compete against Tesla ( that hasn't worked out great yet) but goes for a different part of the market. The more EV's the better.
When you say the rear windows are pop out for cost saving, isn’t it actually the shape of the rear door means you can’t wind the window down without it having a massive fixed quarter light.
yeah, exactly whai i was thinking
yes, and more weight and a thicker door, thus less space in the rear.
I aim to do some EV touring and see how many charges I can get for free as I travel throughout Europe.
bum cooker on a low simmer... Gotta love Jonny Smith
We had a Lupo, it was by far and away the best small car we've ever had. Used to run up to Chamonix from Geneva in the middle of winter, no sweat, went everywhere.
POV - back here after the Smith & Sniff podcast episode.
11:26 That waS FLIPPING HILARIOUS 😂😂😂😂
"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."
Bollock porridge is now officially my favorite phrase of 2020.
in order to open the chargeport covers you need to unlock the car with your car key...
Own a Lupo 3L with 395k km on the clock.
So Jonny, what was the deal with the plugs in the back, you needed to press a button or what? Really looked like you were getting worked up over it, funny!
You just press the unlock on the remote and an interlock pin releases the covers, been the same on e-up since 2014.
@@pipstein612 yeah, that's what I thought he was going to do when he went and pulled the key from the steering column!
Watching again because of Richard Porter and his new car on the way. Oh and Bollock Porridge
"It's there, Jonny! It's there." 😂
i've had a standard Up for a couple of years, its an awesome little car :)
I had Mii few years ago
Press the unlock button on the keyfob and the charge port releases the cover (or the cable).
It looks like the bungs in the charging port are now designed to be locked in. I assume the charging port button on the lower dash will release them.
That's a rubbish idea.
Better range, lovely interior, LED lights, keyless start, and it will never rust or look boring - but then I'm biased, I love my i3.
> the Seat version of the Lupo (forgotten the name!) was great value,
That would be the Seat Arosa. I know one that is still running strong after 2 decades. :)
Jonny loves the Lupo, my life is complete haha

I have an E-Golf and you didn’t mention my favourite feature - adaptive cruise. It’s brilliant. I can do my whole commute in stop/start traffic without touching the pedals. It won’t even undertake on the motorway.
Perhaps I should have mentioned it, but tbh I don't really like ACC. It often wastes energy by accelerating too quickly to get back up to speed.
