If Warner Bros got to stretch the Deathly Hallows into two pieces of content then so do we! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is the beginning of the final adventure for Harry and the gang as they set off to destroy a bunch of a Horcruxes and do a WHOLE lot of camping.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 does raise some questions. Like why did all the good guys think that having a massive party at a house that was already destroyed by Death Eaters was a good idea? And where did Harry get that mirror shard? And how thick is this dude’s plot armor? How many wildly different functions do these magical do-hickeys have?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Imagine how many lives could have been spared if no one was trying to protect that turd and instead they simply attacked he who has no nose and his followers?
And surely the plot would be more interesting too if it was an effort led by hermione the prodigy witch who proved hard work beats having a bloodline.
And maybe it's her studies that save herself and others time after another from demise showing ingenuity, new spells she made and the importance of basics.

Watching this I'm realizing that they had a lot more security measures in the books. Like when they left the Dursley's they did split into different directions and they all had fake Hedwigs (they discovered the real Harry because he used the disarming spell he'd become known for). Also none of them went directly to the Burrow (which wasn't attacked in the 6th book), they went to separate locations that had protection charms around them and took portkeys from there (can't remember if it was explained why they couldn't just take a portkey from the Dursley's house). And the Burrow also had protective magic around it too from what I remember (plus Harry had a poly juice potion disguise at the wedding). The movies really did make it seem like they took next to no precautions.

Pius Thicknesse had gone to the Dark Side by that point and declared it illegal to use any sort of magical transportation in or out of the Dursley's house, which also meant extra surveillance by the Ministry on that area for anyone breaking the law. Besides, Harry was still not of age yet, so any magic used by or on him in the Muggle world would have tripped the Trace that was still on him, alerting the Ministry.

The pacing in Deathly Hallows is all over the place and it shouldn't have been. Goblet of Fire, the first of the 'long' books, is beautifully structured around half a dozen key events (Quidditch World Cup, Triwizard champions getting picked, task 1, Yule Ball, task 2, task 3) that are spaced evenly through the book. All the preceding chapters build up to the key event and build a sense of anticipation in the reader. Rowling used a similar structure for Half Blood Prince with Voldemort's memories. After that book it was all set up for Deathly Hallows to follow that pattern too, with Harry having to find and destroy 4 Horcruxes. It started off OK, with Harry et al tracking down the locket, but Rowling had Dumbledore ridiculously neglect to mention to Harry how to actually destroy a Horcrux and we wound up with a third of the book dedicated to the main trio wandering aimlessly around the countryside. Harry failed to work out where any of the other Horcruxes were from the information Dumbledore had given him in Half Blood Prince too, so all that set up was basically wasted. And to top it off, in a book that already involved 4 magical objects, Rowling decided to throw 3 more into the mix! Oh, and wand law makes no sense whatsoever! 🙂

An example of a multi-layered plot point in a book turning into a dumb one by having to simplify it for a movie.
The point was that the plan was supposed to be leaked to the death eaters by Snape. It helped prove to the death eaters that Snape was loyal to them, even though knowledge of the plan wasn't enough to actually know which one was Harry. So, in this case the plan made sense in that it met the needs of all the subplots, even the ones the reader doesn't know about yet.
Pretty well done in the book (unlike, say, introducing a time traveling device that only ever got used once). But movies aren't allowed to make that kind of sense.

The funniest part about the trend of splitting a final book into 2 movies is that it kinda made sense for Harry Potter, since the book was extremely long, but those others were like tiny by comparison so they had absolutely nothing to fill time with. I’m cool with it happening in a book like “Dune” because, again, that book is super long, but this cash grab trend in YA books was so obvious that it immediately turned me off from any of those movies

@@mmack66 oh yeah, that was a trainwreck and a half. I at least initially accepted the idea that they were incorporating bits of the silmarillion to fill space, since there is a ridiculous amount of content in the LOTR universe that could theoretically work in the movies, but even so 3 movies would’ve been too much even if they did it right, which they 100% did not. The battle of five armies did have a ton of room to expand on, but they jumped the shark and it ended up being an incomprehensible mess. There were good moments, but overall it felt like it somewhat sullied the LOTR films’ good names since the series was now weighed down by a few pretty mid cash grabs
