If I had an antique cake stand that contained lead, I would still want to use it as well. I would trim a piece of parchment to size, and then for looks, use a lacy paper doily on the parchment to disguise it. Great video as always, and your sweet kitty is lovely.
Yes, great advice! Glad you enjoy kitty as much as we do! Thank you for sharing 💛 ~ Anja
Been using some items since the early 1900s my nan used kept family’s kitchen items. And I’ve used them as they were passed down and just around. I never thought of it. Hasn’t killed me or anyone else yet.
I came for the info. Stayed for the kitty. 💛
Love it 🐱 - thank you so much 😊 ~ Anja
As I know vintage is anything more then 20 years ago. I guess my whole house is vintage.
Antique is something I think more then 100 years old but also is collectible.
I love German knifes. Solingen is the company which makes them and they stay sharp all the time.
Yes! Since recording this video I did learn the difference between antique and vintage. Gotta love your German knives! Thank you so much for sharing 💛 ~ Anja
Anna Solingen is the town where it is made.
@@soniabarker-finch283 That's right!
What kind of stove is that? It’s beautiful.
Hi Monique, it's an Ilve stove: ua-cam.com/video/8yWmjaCvGcI/v-deo.html 😊 ~ Anja
Video is great and usefull but I'm sorry to say having your cat on the table is actually not healthy at all. Thinking of her rubbing her bum where you're preparing the veggies... 😖
Love love love 🐈, but never on the table.
Even new LeCreuset pots contain lead and cadmium in the glaze. It is good to be informed! Thank you!
Thank you so much! Yes, it's great to make informed decisions 💛 ~ Anja
I read an article where they were thinking of enclosing in heavily leaded glass the waste nuclear fuel. It would keep them solid and from leaching out into the environment. If leaded glass can keep something so toxic, I think it can keep contained inside the glaze on my pans, while I use them a few times of a year. Yes I know it is not the same thing, but it is similar. If you soak your acidic tomatoes in your enamel pan for a week, ok, a little bad chemicals and metals may leach out, but for an hour or two that you are cooking with them, I hardly think it matters. How much pollution do we breathe in, during the day? Isn't our indoor air in our homes, like 10 times a polluted than the outside air?
The crock has no glaze on rim or bottom to prevent sticking in the kiln. If the glaze is ‘bumpy’ rather than glassy, grey or brown, it is salt glazed, and safe for food.
Good to know! Thank you so much for sharing 💛 ~ Anja
Hallo Anja,
so schöne Dinge hast du uns da gezeigt :) DANKE!
MANY PEOPLE HAVE BED CHAMBER POTS & do not know they were porta potties when there was no inside toilet even in 1900s and easily back to 1600s. Poor may have just used a wood bucket. AH the good old days. They were often fired in kiln and seem to fragile to sit on >???? Look like a giant squatty tea cup.
Thank you. Very helpful information. I love and have used my mom’s glass cake plate with the tin cover for over 50 years now!
At 65 I've forever been an old soul and would have preferred living in pioneer times LOL I grew up with antiques (anything 100 years or older) in our home being used daily and because I was born in the 50's I inherited my modern relatives vintage item (anything 50 years to 99) and I use them all on a daily basis except the crocks. I love your herb chopper because of the double blades and when I spot one I'll add it to my kitchen items. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for sharing, fellow vintage-lover 💛 ~ Anja
Test it for lead. Box stores carry lead stick tests, and they are cheap. Also, test your antique cast iron for lead because people used to use them to make bullets.
Thank you so much for sharing 😊 ~ Anja
If you think it has lead, why don't you just get one of those lead testing kits from the hardware store and test your item.
Yes, that is what I will do and what I recommend (it's in the description box). Thank you for bringing that up ~ Anja
As far as I understand, 'antique' is at least 100 years old whereas 'vintage' is less than 100 years old. Anyone disagree?
Someone likely already answered, but antique is over 100 years old (so prior to 1922), and vintage is over 50 years old (so prior to 1972).
Yes, that's right! Could have done my homework before recording 😜 ~ Anja
The crock may have been used for pickling veggies. We had a cast iron clothes iron and it made a great door stop.
The cat may knock over some of your antiques. I don't think it's a good idea to store salt in a metal container because of corrosion. I would use all the items except the wooden ones that could accumulate smells while in storage.
Your nose can also help with wooden items; sometimes they have held items that are not food safe. Oily substsnces (especially motor-type oils) often are not safe, so if there are dark oil stains that have an unusual smell, best to use them for non-food purposes. Our cat has a dough bowl she sleeps in!
Luckily, all our wood items smell fine. I love that your cat sleeps in a dough bowl 💛 ~ Anja
You can get lead test sticks at every hardware store.
The look and are the size of cigarettes or pastel chalk sticks abd come in a cardboard plastic on top pack.
Yes, thank you for sharing 👍 ~ Anja
Vintage is 60's 70's 80's and 90's antiques on the other side of sixties
Professionally speaking;
Vintage: less than 50 years old
Antique: 100 years old or older
Additionally
Using lead glassware
Always use a paper Doily or wax paper
Lastly I have a wonderful coppersmith who re-tins…. information to follow
🥰Your Crock-pot
Used for sauerkraut or sourdough should have a cover
I use mine all the time. So sometimes on the 'get hot' type appliance, the whole appliance gets hot, the inside, outside, tops, sides.......you just have to learn how to not touch the hot metal body and parts. If you do, you get a burn. I have a very nice 'American Beauty' clothes iron, it has a huge sole plate. It took quite a bit of use, for me to train my brain not to brush my knuckles across the top from holding the handle, and I've burned myself more than a few times on the very tip of the iron. But now, I can use it mostly burn free. ha ha ha. I do not use antique hair dryers as I did read they were full of asbestos and can blow asbestos particles into your face. But all the rest of my appliances, if they have good electrical cords, I use them.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience!!
Antique means that the object is at least 100 years old. All the rest is vintage…
Yes! I have learned that since recording this video 💛 ~ Anja
On the cake plate - I would think that it would be ok if you used a paper doily? Mom always used a doily and so I do the same.
Yes! A doily or parchment paper would be perfect 💛 ~ Anja
I have heard that it’s safe to cook with copper as long as it is not tarnished. The green oxidation is what is hazardous.
Yes, that sounds right. Also, avoiding acidic foods such as tomatoes or lemons. Thank you for commenting 💛 ~ Anja
Thanks for the informative entertaining video Anja....lots of neat information here.
Yay! I am so glad you found this helpful 💛 ~ Anja
I always look forward to your vlogs. Love your kitty.
Aww ... you are so sweet! Kitty always wants to be in the video 💛 ~ Anja
Very nice video with good information. I have my Grandmother's cast iron skillet which I treasure. ( love your cute childhood skillet). Happy to see Ella joining the party! Thank you.
Aww ... thank you! I am so glad you enjoyed the video and the kittie 💛 ~ Anja
I'm 63 and my grandmother, who was born sometime around the turn of the century (1900ish) had her grandmother's cast iron dutch oven. I unfortunately did not inherit it. But it must have been from the 1870's or 1880's, I'm guessing.
The bread bowl is beautiful!!
Thank you so much 😊~ anja
Hi Anja, I just found you and am now a subscriber. What a wonderful video! I am a lover of things from the past and a simpler lifestyle, can't wait to watch other videos and to follow you on social media. Thank you!
Thank you so much for subscribing and happy watching 💛 ~ Anja
Copper pots are not coated with tin, they are "tinned" with zink. This is a fairly easy process that you (or your husband) might want to look into as a diy project. The purpose of the "tinning" is to make it easier to use with acidic foods. Exposed copper is safe to use as long as it is not used with acidic foods. Lead glass, as another has said, use a paper or cloth doily. Tin Boxes? Line them with paper. Solingen is where I bought my non-stainless paring knives from. Love them!
Nice and thank you for sharing, fellow carbon knife lover 😊 ~ Anja
Amazing!
Great educational Tutorial!
Thank you for sharing!
Greetings from Singapore!🇸🇬🌷

Aww ... I am so glad you enjoyed this video! Thank you for your sweet comment 💛 ~ Anja
I think it's ok to use an old/vintage kitchen items. If there not made of some sort of metal or fiber wear. There be ok. They will also last longer if you take good care of them. Don't use to much of high heat, the size of the pan should be what the flame under the pan size.😊
Yes, thank you for sharing 😊 ~ Anja
Enamel ware. Red and white, green and cream colored
Hi,another interesting, entertaining and informative video! Thank you for sharing! Learned a lot! Godbless and keep safe always from the Philippines 🇵🇭
Yay! I am so glad you enjoyed this video 💛 ~ Anja
If it is really glass it should never contain lead.
Only chrystal contains lead
That is correct 😊
I would be more concerned with stuff we buy today than an antique. I have read that if a woman has low iron she is deficient in copper. I love that crock.
Haha, yes, probably ... Thank you for sharing and for commenting 💛 ~ Anja
I have a terrible time picking out long lasting knives. None of them have stayed sharp. I have given up on the task.
Oh no!! It's like sourdough - don't give up! Have you tried the inexpensive German carbon knives?
As for the copperpot: I know there are still tin foundries in Belgium and even more in France. I would bring it if you ever go on a holiday to Normandie for example. Other than boiling eggs you could -although a saucepan is usually not the best choice- try to whip eggwhites since that goes extremely well in combination with copper. But whatever you do, never use a tin pot on high heat since tin will wear off so much quicker.
Great, I will definitely check out those European tin foundries! Thank you so much for sharing 😊 ~ Anja
Hallo Anja, thank you for sharing this. It has never come to my mind that the heirloom items I use could be hazardous to my health but of course they might be ! Those stoneware containers ( Gurkentöpfe to me ) might contain lead of course but I've never thought of that.
Well, they look beautiful with big wild flower bouquets in them so they are not useless after all.
It's funny to see we come from the same cultural background with "good Sunday silverware and china" and the "everyday silverware and china" ( the Sunday stuff having to be cleaned by hand because of the gold ornaments ).
I have to admit though that I got rid of all that when I started to live a single life and reduced my household to one convenient set for all occasions starting 'death cleaning'.
Haha, I love it, Gurkentöpfe! And yes, we enjoy our Sonntagsfrühstück every week. Thank you so much for sharing and for your sweet comment 💛 ~ Anja
On the cake stand, you could put a doily or piece of parchment, etc underneath.
Yes! Great suggestion 💛 ~ Anja
how safe is fiesta dinnerware to use.
Hi Holly, I would say that largely depends on how, when, and where it was made. You can always do a lead test 😊 ~ Anja
💚🌞
💛
Thus is a hilarious video. Common sense she says???? Vintage items are the least of her worries. Those paws walk thru the kitty litter box but hey?!? Why not on the eating table as well!! SERIOUSLY?!?! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! My pet dogs were trained not to go into the kitchen!!!
