  • After 3 1/2 years of UA-cam, it's time for me to take a step back.
    My other channels:
    - ‪@DanDoesDev‬ (game development)
    - ‪@doublequill‬ (gaming, not Minecraft)
I will still make Quillbee videos, but they may become a little bit less frequent.
This is my 100th video, excluding shorts and unlisted videos. Thank you all for your support, I couldn't have done it without you!

Thank you all SO MUCH for being a part of this journey! 🙏

Took me 8 years and about 300 videos to find something an audience enjoyed. And even then it took me a long time after that to hit 100k subscribers. The 100 videos thing is a good start but that’s still a “formula” for success.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my work on the platform, it’s that catering to an algorithm is a dead end. So instead of trying to make videos for the computer, I started making videos for the viewers. The moment I replaced the word “algorithm” in my head with “audience,” it started making more sense to me.
The algorithm’s only function is “viewer satisfaction” which means that if a person watches a video for longer than average, the algorithm will take that into account as it watches the data. Over time across a bunch of views, the algorithm will build up a sort of “mental picture” so to say lol of the video and who it would be good for. But, and here’s the key, the algorithm also needs to know that the video (and the channel) will deliver on the satisfaction to the viewer. This means it can take a really long time before the algorithm starts pushing videos to new audiences. You can’t become the boss of a company in a single year, and the same happens with the algorithm. You have to build up that trust over a long period of time before the audience starts returning and the algorithm is comfortable with pushing your videos out to more people. It may be hard for small creators, but it also makes it hard for bad content to get through, and I think UA-cam as a platform would prefer the good content to surface first. After all, if the creators really mean it, they will keep making good things.
Sometimes the videos that I didn’t think were high quality performed really well. And while that was frustrating initially since I spent so much time on other videos that didn’t get nearly the same view count, these successes were important to look at. Clearly, the audience was interested in this one, and UA-cam’s algorithm recognized that and pushed it to more people. Why was that? What did they like about the video and how could I use those things they liked in future content? How could I turn this video format into something I genuinely did like instead of feeling like it was lower effort? (All really good questions to dig into)
So here’s my take on your journey here. I think you’ve done some good work, but I think you need to keep going. Keep checking the boxes of quality, keep checking the boxes of entertainment value, keep people interested, build up that trust. That’ll give you a better likelihood of that recognition. Cater to the audience. Never to the algorithm. I’ve built up my following without chasing trends and without trying to “hack” the algorithm.
And to be genuine with you, it might not work. That’s absolutely a possibility. But it 100% won’t work if you give up!
Plus, 12,000 subscribers is nothing to be sad about. That’s a wild number and new creators would give anything to be in your position. You’ve built it up to this point, and with continued quality work like you’re making, I think it’s absolutely possible to hit the 100k goal someday.
Create videos for your audience and the algorithm will help you 🫡

Hey Knarfy, thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed response!
I definitely think you make some great points and, for what it's worth, I agree that the algorithm does generally do a good job of recommending videos that I want to watch, even if a lot of great videos slip through the cracks.
Just to be clear, I am extremely grateful to have reached 12,000 subscribers! Also, I know that growth is not linear, so I'm sure it wouldn't *really* take me 30 years to hit 100k. That said, I personally needed to define a "stopping point", otherwise I could spend years making videos at the expense of other projects that I want to focus on. 100 videos may be an arbitrary milestone, but it gave me something to aim for that was within my control.

    • @Knarfy
      @Knarfy 2 дні тому

@@Quillbee Totally understandable to have a stopping point, so that's absolutely valid! In all honestly you've put in a lot more work here than a lot of creators do before they just decide it's not worth it, so that's absolutely something to be proud of!
Hopefully your other projects go well too! And hopefully my explanation and experience is useful for future creative endeavors on YT. Keep up the good work 👏

Super proud of you for this video and your honest take on "playing the algorithm". I know we've talked about this a lot off-camera, but the frustrations you've shared today are ones I feel as well. To think that some of my "best" content has some of the lowest views is stomach-churning. UA-cam is not made for the little guys and if you're a big guy you're always wondering when it'll all disappear.

Dude, I completely understand how you feel. I been at this for EIGHT YEARS and haven't cracked 5k. Granted, the first 6 years were mid, these last two have been professional and innovative. It's really devastating to produce content that should have views at lease six-figures only cap out at 10k. 😔
Often it feels rigged, and it somewhat is, there's only so much you can do to make a video successful. But, it seems the algorithm is working in your favor with this video! So keep trying and innovating and I hope to see you at 100k! 🙂

it's really nice to see more and more people talking about how the algorithm grind kind of sucks and is bad for creativity. as someone who really takes interest in mcyt stuff as an artform it gets frustrating to see people doing incredible work get buried in other recommendations, and to have so much of this also be a necessary evil to "please the algorithm" and keep channels sustainable in a monetary way... yeah it sucks. but the more people talk about it, hopefully the better things will start to turn out.
looking forward to seeing what you do :>

Hello, I just wanted to drop by to say that I feel your pain.
I'm a mapper who makes mapping content and occasional Minecraft stuff, mapping is when you make countries go to war in fictional animations. I once made a video about a fictional Minecraft nation I made with my friends go to war with literal Illagers, I was, and still am, quite disapointed to see that the video didn't even reach 200 views. Mapping videos are animations and it takes a lot of practice to make advances look smooth. I have had one video receive the attention I believe it deserved, but a few others unfortunately didn't.
    Oh btw, I subscribed ;)

❤The UA-cam algorithm brought me to your channel. You love playing video games. And it shows. So I subscribed. Some of the best UA-cam channels are channels that have less than 20,000 subscribers, I found some that had less than 1,000 subscribers that are just absolutely amazing. ❤
❤I started my UA-cam channel because I wanted to connect with my nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. I wanted to give them some viewing options. Then it went from my family, to me having 66 subscribers. I did not seek that but that came to me. I would rather have a 66 subscribers who values what I value in the games that I play, then 100,000 who's just there because I do a bunch of gimmicks or trends. ❤

It's almost ironic that just now UA-cam recommended this video to me talking about the problem with the algorithm, now i know about this channel on this day that might be an historical day for this channel, first video i watch could be its last one.
I also have a UA-cam channel on another account (won't say name) and there i have 100 subscribers with 80 videos, even one of my videos that i recorded 2 years ago now has almost 8k of views (my most viewed one) so at least you are better than me, although i think it's my fault because i don't have ideas about what to do, my editing just consists of putting cuts in the video and that's it, and sometimes i dont uploading anything for months.
But still i think you have made a big progress with your current subscribers number and you have a community that likes your videos and supports you and that's what really matters at the end.

Quite Ironic considering the content of the video. But Im glad to hear that you aint fully giving up man. The alghorithm is something people need to acknowledge, it is what it is. Its why I personally prefer Streaming. Not like I didnt try UA-cam before but its the kind of content creation that would have worked so much better back then, than it does today. Its why I ended up deleting everything. I reached 100 vids, maybe got 1 comment. And then I realized: "Yea nah this aint it."
But you got a good and strong community. Never give up on them and they wont give up on you. I know you can get that 100k plaque eventually ^^

I know that this is not the end, but I guess this might be the best time to say this.
    Thank you for everything Quill.
When I decided to change my content style over 3 years ago, I was struggeling with finding the type of videos I wanted to make. I'd already messed around a little bit with data packs at that point, but in my mind, this didn't amount to anything. The few videos that I did record, I scrapped, because they weren't good enough in my mind. I was really close to giving up right then and there.
Then I saw you Omnichunk video, which to this day, fascinates me. I thought Minecraft was simply too oversaturated, but the concept of this mod was so unique that you've proven me wrong.
So I started making videos, trying to increase the quality as I went along, and it worked really well for a while. Eventually, this motivation and inspiration resulted in Chunkerror, one of my favorite projects to this day, but even Roguecraft, believe it or not, was inspired by one of your works: Chunklock.
Chunklock, once again, was such a unique concept, executed perfectly, that it inspired me to take on a larger project. While the end result has nothing to do with Chunklock, simply put, without you, Roguecraft and Chunkerror wouldn't exist, my two favorite creations.
While our content styles may be entirely different, you were always a source of inspiration to me, and even if you stop uploading completely one day, I'll never forget that.
But again, this is not the end, and if you're focusing more on what you want to create, then I can't wait to see what's next. Whether it's another episode of the Chillbee SMP, a data pack creation or something completely different, I'll be there until the very end.

Hey, I am commenting just because you said it meant a lot to you (some UA-camrs dont even read comments), but goals are just motivation, if you want to keep pushing through eith sth, you have to have fun doing it and i believe you are. Also, there are channels out there having a million subs but only 500 view-videos. These are dead channels, but i believe that your channel isnt. BTW you can use YT-Shorts to promote ur ideas further, but try to not make all of your subs off of shorts as else, noone will watch your videos anymore. Instead use Shorts as a tool to PROMOTE your video ideas or videos in general.

When I post a actual good video and I am proud of it, it always gets the lowest views on my channel. But all UA-cam is, is a patience game, until you finally get recognized as a good content creator. First time seeing your channel and my friend, you have got the right ida about youtube. I have a friend who loves youtube a lot, but he knows he will probably never become a big channel, but he still makes videos. Why is that? Cause He does it because he just enjoys making videos and not because he wants to be famous. In my opinion most newer channels have the wrong idea of being successful and they expect being successful to be super famous with alot of subs, but i think being successful on youtube is more if you are happy with the videos you make and if you are happy about your fan base. I would rather, and he would rather to have a small channel with a devoted and nice community rather then a large channel with toxic and immature people.
Sorry for the short rant. It is just how i do things :P.

As hard as it might be to hear, people watch what they want (Unless they're asleep). I watched your most popular video about chunklock ages ago and I never had any thoughts in my mind to watch another video since it's one interesting minecraft video in a sea of others. But is that a bad thing? I wouldn't say so. A lot of big videos come from small channels just because that one random video hit extra hard. As long as it's not your income, you should just make what you like realistically, that's how you get a fanbase that'll look forward to the next video (That's also how some youtubers get trapped making content they don't like because that's what's expected of them and that's how they pay rent).
A lot of the b-roll in this video for example looked like stuff I'd never watch personally, but if that's what you want to make, some people probably will at some point. You got over 10 000 people to sub to you at some point doing it, so even if you didn't reach your goal it's still an acomplishment to be proud of. With social media it's hard to really internalise the numbers of stats you see because the numbers get too big. So try like going outside, try counting 10 000 people (You will not manage to do this), give it some perspective that's not a number on a screen.

What’s annoying is I’d spend months on a video, get a pretty good amount of views (over or under 100) and then upload a meme that I thought was funny and watch that video skyrocket, I should just make a meme channel at this point

the key is dramatic improvements in quality across videos- there are about a billion other factors like niche but the general quality of content is vital. My advice would be to take out a piece of paper and write down every possible thing you can improve for your next video, visuals, sound effects, storytelling- etc, and eventually you will find some level of success. Keep going man! This was a great video and good luck for the future!
EDIT, some clarification on previous notes- there is a lot of interpretation on "quality" of videos. I think that there should be a balance maintained between quality and enjoyment making videos as i often find the videos like this one that aren't hyper edited for retention the best ones I've ever seen. I'm getting sick of mindless entertainment and I'm starting to prefer this style of video a lot more as of recent.

I think it is more about the people who use youtube. If you get a lot of views on one video, tons of people will subscribe. This is an issue, as they may only like your channel for that one thing. Chunklock got you a lot of subscribers, but many people subscribed for more chunklock, and aren't interested in anything else on your channel. Then, when these people don't watch your other videos, bc they rnt interested in them, they don't get promoted by the algorithm. But, what do I know? I'm just a girl who watches a ton of youtube, and somehow has a problem with her subscribtion box full of stuff she isn't interested in. I hope you enjoy your time on youtube, and find the right audiance for your content!

This is a problem that I've seen many times in UA-cam, other platforms, and every creative tools nowadays. That includes even real life arts or music(you already knows that a painting is more expensive depends mostly on luck, fame and the real meaning. Art's now become just lucky and weird instead of the most beautiful and creative. Content in UA-cam and other platforms are being so saturated and so many people that you are popular only by luck or stupidity. People that suddenly blew up recently, like Mogswamp, spent 10 years in a world, and nobody cared that entire journey except the shorts that made him popular just because he said he'll place a block of dirt every subscriber so people only see him and youtuber actually invite him on youtube videos. Misticat only became popular because of the circle video that was not even impressive or hard. And I think the later videos are better and the recent ones are 100 times worse than CodeNeon's video, or other datapack creators. Your video are one of the most refreshing videos on this platform imo I really liked underrated youtubers like you, leon or other
creators that I love instead of brain rot, children, monster schools videos that only meant to make money. Even though some of them are actually good, I will say that you are the most underrated youtuber that I've seen, and the best too.

  • @DiamondDepthYT
    @DiamondDepthYT 5 днів тому +1

7 years. I've been making content on my channel for 7 years years. And what I've learned over time is that my favorite successful creators just did what they enjoyed.
Do I want success? Of course. But if I get success on something I'm not proud of, or something I didn't enjoy, then is it really success? Almost 2 years ago now, I gave up on chasing the normal algorithm. I have instead decided to just do whay I find fun, what I enjoy.
This video makes me so happy! Do what you enjoy, you deserve it! ❤
P.S. this is sorta off topic and contradicting, but, at least recently, I've actually found that UA-cam has been recommending me more smaller UA-camrs who are just doing what they enjoy. I know it's naive, but I'm hoping that's a sign that a sign that genuine content is once again on a rise, like the good old days.
I'm not very good at wording things, so I apologize if my comment is hard to read. Anyways, I'll be sticking around! :))

    • @Quillbee
      @Quillbee  День тому

I left out a lot of stuff for brevity. There was a lot of pressure to make shorts when they were first introduced but I think that's subsided now. My understanding is that the viewers that you gain from shorts don't typically stick around for long-form content.
